The Captain Poll is now open for votes ahead of Gameweek 4 and you can watch our video on the best candidates for the armband below or on our YouTube channel.

The early favourite is Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who faces an appealing home match-up against Newcastle, a side he is very fond of.

The Manchester City striker has scored 11 goals in his last five home meetings with the Magpies and has already netted a hat-trick in front of his own supporters this season.

With the champions set for the most attractive fixture of the week, options such as Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m) will get consideration as well as David Silva (£8.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) if he can hold on to his place.

Also with an appealing match-up is Chelsea, who host the porous Bournemouth defence in Gameweek 4. The Cherries have only allowed two big chances so far in 2018/19, although that does include facing a goal shy Cardiff and they have still conceded three goals in as many matches.

Eden Hazard (£10.6m) is obviously the standout candidate with two assists and goal from just one start and two subsitute appearances in the first three Gameweeks of the season.

However, Pedro (£6.6m) is also an option for those unable to shoehorn the Belgian international into their sides.

As ever, Marcos Alonso (£6.7m) will form part of the conversation now that he has registered a minimum of 11 points in every match so far and has had more shots on goal than any other defender.

Of course Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has to still be in the conversation as he’s joint-top for shots amongst all players and has created more chances than anyone else.

What about Newcastle's insanely negative park the bus 5 at the back tactics? Can see them frustrating City and keeping the scoreline right down.

Missing personnel like Shelvey means City can pile so much pressure on them without worrying very much about counters - we're not talking Hudders levels, but I expect fat goals in the game.

I think we might be talking Hudders levels.
They showed that they can smash down a team that comes there to hold the fort, and nothing else.

I just think Newcastle have the ability to counter better, so Pep will be more careful. Otherwise I agree with you.

Agree with the counter Then again, it's hard to see any other obvious threats from that team.
Flukes can always happen (that Giroud smashing/ lack of foul 🙁 )

lol Dilva is nailed and playing well, Schurrle had 11 shots last game and King is on pens + fixtures.

Pedro got half his normal shots when Haz was back, Mkhi is not consistent and Zaha playing on an uber defensive team mostly as a winger.

One for the podcast and for others to discuss here.

What % would you assign to skill and luck in the FPL.

From my experience, I think I'm definitely more skillful than lucky e.g. transfers, bench or captain choices will be based on skill but the amount of bad luck applied is at least 50/50, but I know other players who have charmed existence with luck whilst others seem to get it all wrong. Yes I know the "You make your own luck" etc but I think there are just times when you crunch the numbers and do the needful, but it still can be just pure luck.

I see the difference in being a good poker player to a great poker player. I think I'm good but don't have that "luck". My view is 90% skill and 10% luck is FPL average. What do you think?

    1. Holmes
      • 12 Years

      80% luck, 20% skills

I'd say a given gameweek is mostly luck, and if you have prepared properly you can get a few extra points on the average, and it's a case of preparing properly to get these bonus points every week. The difference between a top score and an average score is probably 20% over the course of the season, so perhaps the game is 20% skill?

It might not sound much but it's a marathon not a sprint. I would compare the FPL season to a knockout tournament where even the best players can come completely unstuck due to a freak 'gameweek' or two.

Kind of similar to what poker is - mostly skill (ie. if you look at the top 10k players 90% or more are probably skillfull at the game) but also a bunch of luck in being able to do really well.

70% luck 30% skill. It’s the 30% that separate the top managers from the rest.

About 80% skill to get top 50k or so, but after that mostly luck - winning the whole thing you'd deffo need about 80% luck

Similar to poker. You can play a hand perfectly and still lose when your captain limps off injured after 10 mins but over time, the best players will rise to the top.

Interesting responses and it really seems mixed.

I would say I've finished in the top 5% more often than not so I see:

skill = understanding the rules, experience, form, fixtures

luck = gut feeling, coin toss, forgetting to change your team

        1. Podge
          • 15 Years

I doubt much more than 5% of teams play to the end,

    7. Podge
      • 15 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

There’s a certain pool of players you can consider, 3-4 from each team roughly. Knowing which ones should be considered is knowledge so I suppose that can be considered skill. The ones, from them, that you pick doing well or badly is all luck. So I say 10-20% knowledge 80-90% luck.

      1. skooldaze
        • 15 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

        90% luck?!

Really. But on that principle you're applying your good points as luck 90% of the time.

So if you looked at Salah vs Pedro for example. If you chose Salah and he outscores Pedro, is that luck? Surely that's "skill" as you have looked at the odds and background.

Luck would be Salah blanks for once and Pedro puts in a good week for once.

Same goes for the whole team though, I consider anyone who went Firmino over Mitrovic unlucky, it’s not skill, you pay your money you take your choc ice

Hazard looks hungry under Sarri so can see the temptation I’m in the same boat - however hazard scored 0 prem goals 2016/17 season and played a huge amount of mins - Aubameyang will gather some huge hauls over the next 6 games and push for golden boot

      B.
Walcott is nice, but is inconsistent. Haven't watched Arsenal too much, but Auba seems to be missing and not as sharp as he usually should be.

Fulham meanwhile play nice football, and Mitro gets a lot of service. Hazard meanwhile consistently brings in points and is Chelsea attack's focal point.

Option A can punish you for not choosing it, but option B seems far safer and more guaranteed to bring in points over the long term.

People not concerned Newcastle will park the bus again and City will struggle to break them down?

Caveat to the above I suppose is I thought the same about Huddersfield and look how that turned out.

Leicester likely to be more offensive playing at home and don't seem prone to clean sheets at the moment.

Looking at Aguero's previous scores against Newcastle is enough to convince me to captain him.
It's a similar situation to week 2 though where it's blind luck in the Salah vs Aguero lottery.

It could happen but Man City are a lot better than Chelsea and they still managed to get two away from home against Rafa's bus. City should be able to break them down at the Etihad.

I'm also playing Sakho but I'm purely looking at points potential of AWB vs Wilson.
I am tempted by AWB starting but Bournemouth won 3-0 away at Chelsea last season.

The fact that you will be playing Sakho makes me tempted to say spread the risk and bench AWB.

If it was Fraser, or King, I'd probably say play AWB. Chelsea have been dodgy at the back recently, despite 80 odd % of possession Newcastle were able to cause I some serious problems and grabbed an easy goal - Wilson could definitely grab a goal as BOU's talisman.

Neither is a bad choice. Either spread the risk or bank on Palace clean sheet, both good 🙂

Id say Wilson personally. Southampton have looked ok offensively this season so fancy them to score. Same applies to Bournemouth re Wilson.

Having some semi-regret over my (drunk) transfers last night. I did:

    Richarlison > Hazard
    Bilva > Walcott
    Firmino > Zaha

I don't regret getting Hazard at all, but maybe I should have just taken a -4 and got Wilson in - def. not happy about spending a -4 on Bilva to Walcott.

Walcott will play the next 2 atleast with Rich suspended and could be undroppable of he continues and has the fixtures to do it.

Far from the worst drunk trade I've seen round these parts

yeah that's why it's only semi-regret.. I didn't really fancy any of the cheap forwards too much (already got Mitro) - I know Walcott will prob do well, but Bilva has good fixtures too still and I think Wilson on retrospect is still as good a pick as Zaha.

    Would you wildcard this?

    Hart / 4.0

    Mendy / Holebas / Boly / Daniels / Wan B

    Salah / Mane / B.Silva / Mkhi / Gunnarson

    Kun / Zaha / Arnie

Obviously concern is Hart and the defence. Also some questions over Arnie and B.Silvs as well as not owning Alonso, Robertson, Hazard etc.

Not in the worst position but doesn't seem much point in holding onto the first WC?

    Thanks

Nope. I'd get rid of Daniels as he's on limited gametime from now on with their new signing. Not sure about Gunnarson myself, probs get rid.

I'd opt to get one of the big hitters in defence (Robbo/Alonso), and new keepers.

Anyone ditching Liverpool players are crazy! Especially against a Leicester team who concede almost every week. I can understand switching to Chelsea players at home to Bournemouth but I wouldn't write BOU off at all . Eddie Howe has them playing some good football. Alonso isn't going to get 11 points plus every week!

I think people should be less Panicky and be patient. Mane and Salah are the two most dangerous players in the league right now!

Robertson is basiclaly Pools playmaker if anyone has watched pool games everything goes to him.

    Patience my friends!

Yeah I just feel i've missed the huge hauls and one more week won't hurt I also have VVD I just had to chnage Richarlison otherwise i'd have Alonso now myself. But Mane and Salah for now look on fire!

Bit harsh to say Leicester concede every week.... they let in 2 vs United, 1 vs Southampton but got a CS against Wolves.

Liverpool will probably win, but it's unlikely to ever be a hammering whereas Chelsea could potentially hammer Bournemouth

Nah Leicester don't do clean sheets and Wolves were terrible that day! Bournemaouth are unbeaten for a reason and are more than capable of doing the same as last year to Chelsea. Chelsea are not as good as they seem I've watched them in the last two games and they're nowhere near the team they were 2 seasons ago but who know Sarri's philosophy might start kicking in. I'm holding my pool players for now till i see a decline in their attacking threat

    A: Ederson (Hamer)

    Mendy Alonso Robertson Trippier(Wan Bis)

    Salah Mane Walcott Pereyra (Guendouzi)

    Wilson Aguero ( joselu)

    B: Hennessy (Hamer)

Mendy Alonso Robertson Wan Bis (Bennet)

    Salah Mane Hazard Fraser (Guendouzi)

Any changes worth a hit? 0FT, 0.0 in the bank....

    DDG
    Alonso, Mendy, Robertson, AWB
    Salah, Mane, B.Silva, Pedro
    Aguero, Zaha

    (Stek, Kamara, Stephens, Peltier)

Looking to ship DDG, maybe B.Silva out over the next few weeks and upgrade Stephens/Kamara...

    Cheers
