Here’s hoping for a quieter Friday afternoon/Saturday morning than the one we experienced a fortnight ago.

Then, the momentum behind a widespread Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) captaincy was derailed by an article published in the Guardian suggesting Pep Guardiola was considering dropping his Argentinean striker for the visit of Huddersfield Town.

The considerable number of Fantasy Premier League managers who paid heed to the piece and moved the armband to another asset were “Jacksoned” when Aguero subsequently delivered a 20-point haul in City’s 6-1 win over the Terriers.

The reigning league champions play their second home league match of the season on Saturday evening, with Newcastle United the visitors to the Etihad, and the consensus in the Fantasy community seems to be that Aguero is the runaway favourite captaincy candidate for Gameweek 4.

There are several viable alternatives elsewhere, however, all of whom we’ll explore in the article below.

We begin by running through the Captain Poll on our site before analysing the Opta data and Rate My Team (RMT) numbers ahead of the forthcoming deadline on Saturday morning at 11:30 BST.

The Captain Poll

With 63.8% of the Fantasy Football Scout vote, Aguero is head and shoulders above any other armband option this week.

Aguero has 14 goals in 11 league appearances against the Magpies, eight of which were scored in the last two meetings between the sides at the Etihad.

The Argentinean is the second-most-bought forward of this round and is the most-owned player in his position, sitting in just under 49% of all FPL squads.

City scored 61 home league goals last season at a rate of 3.21 per fixture, while their visitors this weekend kept fewer clean sheets on the road (two) than any other Premier League side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) has been backed for the captaincy by 1.2% of our community, meanwhile.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is never far away from pole position in these armband polls and the Egyptian is the second-most popular option in our vote, with 11.6% of the nominations going his way.

Leicester have shipped 60+ goals for two seasons running and conceded on three occasions to Liverpool in this fixture last season, with Salah among the scorers: the 2017/18 Golden Boot winner had four shots in that fixture and made seven penalty box touches.

Salah also grabbed a brace in the return fixture in December, while he has delivered attacking returns in all three of his matches this season.

Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) are the other two Reds to feature in our top ten, having been nominated by 1.6% and 1.2% of our voters respectively.

Chelsea are about to embark on an inviting double-header against Bournemouth and Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge and Eden Hazard (£10.6m) has been bought by well over 100,000 new FPL managers with those fixtures in mind.

Hazard sits third in our captain poll with 6.4% of the vote and has form against the Cherries: the Belgian midfielder has scored five goals in six league meetings with the south coast side.

Eddie Howe’s troops have conceded at least 60 goals in each of their three seasons in the top flight, while only Liverpool and Manchester City have attempted more shots than the Blues (52) so far this season.

Marcos Alonso (£6.7m) is the fifth-most popular candidate in our poll, meanwhile; the Chelsea left-back is the most-owned defender in FPL at the time of writing (in 33.7% of teams) and no player in his classification has had more attempts on goal this season.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (£10.9m) is sandwiched by Alonso and Hazard in our vote, with Arsenal up against Cardiff City this weekend.

The Gabonese striker has yet to record an attacking return this season and is up against a defence who have kept more clean sheets than 18 other Premier League sides.

Aubameyang’s form at the end of last season, however, hints that he could explode into life at any moment: no forward scored more goals than the former Borussia Dortmund man (ten) after his debut in Gameweek 26.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Theo Walcott (£6.7m) are the only other two players to have attracted more than a 1% share of the vote, meanwhile.

Wondered if anyone could offer a little advice?

    Current team is:

    Ryan (Button)
    Mendy Robertson WB (Tomkins* Peltier)
    Salah Mane Richarlison* Hughes (Stephens)
    Aguero (c) Auba Wilson

    2FT. 0.3 in the bank.

Only made a single transfer so far this season (King > Wilson).

Richarlison to Walcott looks likely this week.

Just wondered whether it'd be worth doing Tomkins > Holebas with the remaining 0.3? I feel like Tomkins has become a bit surplus to requirement in my team what with WB looking more like the Palace player I want to play.

Roll that second transfer over again or do it this week, bearing in mind Holebas has a couple of tough fixtures I'd probably bench him for anyway?

    Thank you.

Roll it. 2 FT's for the international break is always handy.

Just do the Rich trade. Tomkins can wait. WAT for me are a false dawn and will soon revert to type.

Cheers. I'll hold. You're probably right about Watford. Hughes is one I'm keen to ship out sooner rather than later. His goal was a bit of a false dawn itself considering the rest of his stats.

He’s looking decent. Perhaps more likely to get assists than goals, but still one of the best picks at his price.

Think their run might continue for a while longer. I’ve been impressed with their overall play and quality.

But I agree with just doing one transfer this week.

Folk's Team Value higher than normal? Did I miss something this year? I can't remember a year when rises have been so frequent.

    1. MTPockets
      8 years, 17 days ago

Yeah it's a bit silly this season, but b/c retrospectively obvious picks have done well.

I wonder. Also seems like there's a tweak to the code. I'm not far of +2m — took me about 10GWs last season. Overall I was about +6m last with a selling value of about £4.5m. This could be a huge factor come Christmas.

        1. MTPockets
          8 years, 17 days ago

Tweaks - maybe. fplstats shows transfer trends, which have mostly been about flocking from everywhere to relatively few.
e.g Defenders - http://fplstatistics.com/Home/Relationship?dts=D (can also check mids, fwds under 'Trends')

"Flocking" — you called it there. Lots of interest early on on a few players doing incredibly well. But, more than previous seasons?

            1. MTPockets
              8 years, 17 days ago

Can't remember tbh. Again on fplstats - he lists new info on the 'News' page. Seems there may be one new rule but otherwise nothing noted: http://fplstatistics.com/Home/ComingSoon

    RP looking for some input

    Playing my WC:

    Hamer, McCarthy
    Alonso, Mendy, Robbo,Bennet, WB
    Mane, Mkhi, Hazard, Walcott, Neves

    1,2 ITB

Possibly it could, but all the stats after three games point to Salah continuing to perform at a very high level. Personally would prefer to fit him in, but of course up to you. Hazard is a great pick on WC, so don't lose him.

Very uncertain about which Chelsea player to get for their next three excellent fixtures... I can get either Alonso or Hazard using my remaining FT, but which one should I go for?

    A) van Aanholt --> Alonso

Hey guys – quick check over this WC let me know it’s okay and thoughts on the final slot in defence?

    Good luck this weekend everyone

    Ryan (Button)
    Alonso Mendy Robertson/Trippier (Wan, Bennett)
    Hazard Salah Walcott Mkhi (Billing)
    Aguero © Jimenez Zaha

Can’t see too many pool clean sheets in next 5 which is why I’m leaning towards the trip punt – with Wan stepping off the bench when he’s rotated

    Thanks

4.5 GK is doing my head in:

    A) Patricio - has the stats
    B) Hennessey - has the fixtures
    C) Ryan - has the saves potential

I’d love to get B but the chat of possible rotation is putting me off

I may be tempted to take a sensible hit ( good chance at CS in defence for 2 point extra or same with mid with ass/goal that way if no assist/goal but CS then only a 1 point risk) if your gonna play with 10 then so long as you get a starter who isn't a YC magnet then its only a 2 point hit

A shocking Man Utd (DDG) to keep a CS vs a tired Burnley?

I don't trust them keeping a cs after awful 3 matches(defensively). Mee or someone could slot in a header or two from set pieces.

      I think so.
Don't see any better odds of a CS this weekend than Utd to be honest. Maybe City, but Newcastle have more going forward than Burnley do.

I've got Ings doubtful, Cairney out, Peliter non-playing sub, spent my FT on Richarlison to Mkhi and Stephens is my replacement to round off my starting 11. Do I...

    A. WC

    B. Ings out for a hit.

    C. Hope Ings plays / settle for Stephens sub

Mendy - Robertson - AWB (Smith - Peltier)
Salah - Mendy - Mkhitarian - Stephens (Richarlison)
    Aguero (c) - Arnie - King

    1.2banked and 1 FT.

    A. Richarlison --> Walcott/ Pedro
    B. Richarlison & Mane --> Walcott & Hazard (-4)
    C. Richarlison & Peltier --> Neves/Kante & Alonso (-4)
    D. Richarlison & Smith --> Fraser/Gundogan & Alonso (-4)

Yeah in that case I cover Hazard as my Chelsea cover and wont need alonso..

Otherwise I think I need Mr Alonso somehow.. Hmmm!

personally I wont take a hit for Mane to Haz this week. Mane could grab points then you would need to reply on Hazard getting same +4

Wondered if anyone could offer a little advice?

    Current team is:

    Foster (Hamer)
    Mendy VVD Mee WB (Tomkins*)
    Salah Mane Bilva Kante (Stephens)
    Aguero Auba (Madine)

    2FT. 0 in the bank.
Would like to get Alonso somehow instead of Mee but figured I would give Auba one more week before deciding. Also monitoring Bilva's points

Any ideas or should I just not be bothered by "loosing" 1 FT?

    1. Robson-Canoe
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 17 days ago

I don't think Mee will score much this week, so you might as well replace him with someone who you think will score more this week instead of losing a FT

      1. Robson-Canoe
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 17 days ago

Unless you plan on keeping Mee long-term

        1. Robson-Canoe
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 17 days ago

Possible solution could be Mee + Bilva > Alonso + Fraser but that's your call

I tend to agree, but then again starting next week they have some good looking games...

Assuming I do take your advice in names you can think of that are below 5.0 mil ?

          • 11 Years
          8 years, 17 days ago

Tough to say, I'd say Sakho but you already have 2 Palace defs, maybe just stick with Mee or think about Mee + Bilva > Alonso + Fraser

Got to keep Auba for a game against Cardiff.
If anything look to swap VVD to Alonso, should be easier to do, and Liverpool have a tough run of games coming.

    Robertson / Mendy / Wan-Bissaka
