Update on Zaha and Walcott injuries after Gameweek 4 disappointment

Injuries to Wilfried Zaha (£7.1m) and Theo Walcott (£6.8m) caused plenty of frustration for Fantasy managers on Saturday.

The former missed out on Crystal Palace’s defeat to Southampton while Walcott was taken off after 55 minutes for Everton.

Updates on the two highly-owned players form part of our latest Scout Notes article on Saturday’s Fantasy Premier League action.

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-2 SOUTHAMPTON

  • Goals: Danny Ings (£5.6m), Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (4.4m)
  • Assists: Cédric Soares (£4.5m), Matty Targett (4.4m)

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has not given any timescale on the return of popular FPL asset Wilfried Zaha (£7.1m). It was a groin injury sustained in training that forced him out of Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Southampton. Owned by 32 percent of Fantasy managers, Zaha will remain a doubt for the Gameweek trip to Huddersfield Town, even if that is two weeks away with the first international break of the season about to start.

“It was last minute in the training session yesterday, and he was being assessed in the afternoon when the session was over. He came back in early this morning to see the medical staff to see if it maybe wasn’t that serious, but the injury was sufficient enough to keep him out of the game, so I knew that early this morning he couldn’t play. But I was somewhat prepared for that as I left the training ground yesterday because it was fairly clear that he had done something to his left abductor [groin] through a forced movement, so it didn’t come as a big surprise.” – Roy Hodgson

The defeat at Selhurst Park means that the Eagles are still waiting for a first win without Zaha since beating Sunderland 3-2 in September 2016. That discouraging two-year spell may put off investment in Palace if the Ivory Coast international gets ruled out for a number of weeks with this groin injury.

“Yes, of course, I am aware of (the record without Zaha). But I don’t quite know what I can do about it, until such time as we play a game without Wilf and win. Until such time as we do that, everyone will be quite entitled to bring that record up and remind us of it, and beat the rest of the team, or the rest of the squad over the head with the paper bag carrying that record, because it is a fact. Again he couldn’t play today and again we didn’t win, so it is a fact. It is a fact we have to learn to live with, and we will continue to have to keep working hard to try and make certain that we put that fact and situation behind us, because there will be games when Wilf Zaha doesn’t play, and I would like to think that we are good enough as a team, and a squad, to win games without him.” – Roy Hodgson

Going more under the radar, the absence of James Tomkins (£4.5m) appears to be causing just as many problems at the back for Palace as the Zaha-shaped hole has offensively. The former West Ham centre-back has now missed the last two matches after pulling up in the warm-up at Watford. The Eagles have allowed more goal attempts from open play and big chances in the two matches without Tomkins when compared to the two they played with him in the side. Considering one of those was the Gameweek 2 meeting with the forward-thinking Liverpool shows just how bad things have got in his absence. Such numbers may suggest starting Palace defensive assets, such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m) is an unwise decision until Tomkins returns.

Despite failing to find the net in the match, Christian Benteke (£6.5m) remains in Hodgson’s good books. No player had more attempts on goal than the Palace striker and he was unfortunate not to score any of them.

“He worked very hard again and got into the right areas and won headers, but on the three or four occasions he got into those positions and you hope that the ball will fall kindly and he will get it into the goal, he found a very good Alex McCarthy in front of him, and he made the saves. But I couldn’t fault his effort or desire, and he is certainly not hiding, or being afraid to go for these chances. But we are still waiting for that happy day when one of them goes in and he does score, and it takes that monkey off of his back, just as we are waiting, after this game, when we take the monkey off our back of ‘Crystal Palace only when Wilf Zaha plays’ – that is great for Wilf Zaha, but not for Crystal Palace Football Club.” – Roy Hodgson

Danny Ings (£5.6m) overcame the problems caused by a blister earlier this week to not only start the match but also score an all-important second-half goal. Manager Mark Hughes was full of praise for the striker, as well as his initial partner Shane Long (£4.9m) who was forced off with an injury.

“They were excellent. Long has got an issue with his foot so he had to come off. Ings hasn’t trained all week because of the blister and the issue he’s had with his foot so for him to score a goal and last as long as he did was remarkable really. So it was always at the back of my mind that at some point we’d have to take them off. But the lads have come on and stuck to the task… I’m not sure if (Long) got a kick, but he is hobbling around, and I think he is likely to miss the internationals.” – Mark Hughes

It was a mixed display for Long’s replacement Charlie Austin (£5.8m) who came out of the match joint-top for goal efforts despite playing just 28 minutes. However, his usually impeccable record from the penalty spot took a hit as his effort was saved by Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m). Admittedly, it was the first one he’d missed since August 2014 and it sounds as if Hughes is prepared to let him continue as the designated taker for the Saints when he’s on the pitch.

“Maybe, just maybe (asked if he could forgive Austin’s miss). It was one of those things. He wanted to take it and nobody was going to argue. Charlie usually dispatches them time and time again, but today he was unfortunate.” – Mark Hughes

It may be time to consider Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) as part of a budget goalkeeping rotation. His efforts at Selhurst Park on Saturday contributed to a second clean sheet of the campaign for Southampton and took him second in the save-charts, behind only Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m). The former Reading man, who earned a call-up to the England squad earlier this week, has accrued additional points for saves in every match so far this season and sits just behind current leader Neil Etheridge (£4.6m) for total FPL score among goalkeepers. A home match against a typically travel-sick Brighton side up next certainly looks appealing.

CRYSTAL PALACE XI (4-4-2): Hennessey; Van Aanholt, Sakho, Kelly, Wan-Bissaka; Schlupp (Meyer 76’), McArthur, Milivojevic, Townsend (Kouyaté 72’); Ayew (Sørloth 76’), Benteke.

SOUTHAMPTON XI (4-2-3-1): McCarthy; Bertrand, Hoedt, Vestergaard, Cedric; Hojbjerg, Lemina; Elyounoussi (Targett 73’), Redmond, Long (Austin 62’); Ings (Romeu 78’).

EVERTON 1-1 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

  • Goals: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) | Philip Billing (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Lucas Digne (£4.8m) | Chris Löwe (£4.5m)

A familiar FPL curse struck the most transferred-in player once again in Gameweek 4 as Theo Walcott (£6.8m) was forced out of Everton’s draw with Huddersfield in the 55th minute. The former Arsenal man was the people’s replacement for Richarlison (£6.7m), earning 772,000+ new owners in the last seven days but he managed just a solitary FPL point at Goodison Park. Thankfully, the FFS chosen man to replace the Brazilian did much better.

There was some encouragement for those with Walcott in their squads as no Everton player bettered his minutes per chance in the match, indicating that if he is able to face West Ham in Gameweek 5 he should have opportunities to score. However, Walcott owners will have to sweat over his fitness during the international break as Marco Silva has provided no timeline for his return yet.

“As well as Richarlison, Theo with a problem in his hips is another problem for us.” – Marco Silva

The club have since confirmed that the issue is with Walcott’s ribs.

The general feeling from Everton fans, and indeed their manager, was that was the Toffees lacked creativity in Richarlison’s absence. It certainly was not the one-sided thrashing that many had predicted before the game.

“Tough day, really we expected something like that when we face Huddersfield. We expected them to come here to be defensive. We have to create enough challenges and we didn’t do that. We have to play faster in our offensive half.” – Marco Silva

That said, a brief comparison of Everton first two matches of the season, in which Richarlison completed 90 minutes both times, and the draw with Huddersfield is not quite as damning as Silva or Toffees fans might expect, although it doesn’t make for great reading. Without Richarlison in the side, Everton actually managed more attempts on goal than they averaged across Gameweeks 1 and 2 and more chances were created too. However, their shots on target count was considerably lower (Huddersfield had more in this game) and total big chances was halved. Those particular numbers suggest that investment in Everton while Richarlison is missing is not necessarily the answer.

Once again, Everton also let down those who had backed defensive assets. They have now conceded six times in four matches and are still without a clean sheet. They could not even record one against a Huddersfield side that had registered just three shots on target prior to the draw at Goodison Park. Most popular option Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) is not really making it up to his 17 percent ownership in saves either, further reducing his overall value. Five £4.5m options have registered more saves than him in the first three Gameweeks, two of which have played only three times and one of them has beaten his total in just two matches.

New signing Lucas Digne (£4.8m) made his first start for the club in this match, which pushed Leighton Baines (£5.5m) down to the bench. The former Barcelona man assisted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s (£5.4m) first-half equaliser and created more chances than any of his team-mates during the match. His inclusion in the side is also good news for Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) whose role in set pieces looks set to rise without Baines on the pitch. Goal-scorer Calvert-Lewin also deserves a mention as he topped the charts for Everton goal attempts, coming into the starting line-up on the flanks for Richarlison.

Huddersfield are still without a goal in open play in 2018/19 and further justified the decision to avoid their attacking assets. The fact they found the net in this particular match shouldn’t really hold too much hope for the Terriers going forward. That’s because, as we pointed out earlier in the week, Everton came into Gameweek 4 second only to Brighton for attempts allowed from set pieces, so it’s not surprising Philip Billing’s (£4.5m) goal came from that route. Of some encouragement to manager David Wagner was that only Manchester City (eight) registered more efforts on target than Huddersfield (six) on Saturday, although they still couldn’t make five of them count.

“With a little bit more calmness on the ball maybe we would be able to create some better opportunities, in the transition as well. We scored a wonderful set-play goal which we worked a lot on this week because we knew Everton, in the past, were not the strongest at defending set plays.” – David Wagner

EVERTON XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne (Baines 76’), Zouma, Holgate, Coleman; Davies, Schneiderlin; Calvert-Lewin, Sigurdsson (Niasse 76’), Walcott (Lookman 57’); Tosun.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN XI (5-4-1): Lossl; Lowe, Schindler, Zanka, Kongolo, Hadergjonaj (Durm 76’); Mooy, Billing, Diakhaby (Kachunga 60’), van la Parra; Mounie (Depoitre 92’).

Anyone looking at Maddison, seems to be getting overlooked in the 6.5 bracket by Walcott's and Pedro's, even Schurlle at 5.9 with his next game against man city? Looked very good again yesterday against Liverpool, Vardy is back upfront for the next game and fixtures against bou, NEW, hud, EVE I can't believe he has hardly been mentioned.

I think he offers exceptional value and a great differential, to the bandwagons like Pedro. With vardy back and great run. Leicester will definitely score goals over the next 4 games and see Maddison playing a big part in that

Ive had him since GW1 and dont plan on getting rid any time soon. Got a bit lucky with the assist yesterday but also unlucky not to score in that same situation. He's looked very good on the ball and I think most attacking threats in that Leicester team will go through him.

Ok, so let's assume a WC is a bit wasted right now. What would your preferred moves be?

    A) Mané -> Hazard
    B) Salah -> Hazard
    C) Kamara -> Ings
    D) Shaw -> 4.5 (save funds for upgrades later on)
    E) Save FT

    2.1 ITB

    Patricio / Hamer
    Mendy / Robertson / Alonso / Shaw / AWB
    Salah / Mané / Mhki / Hughes / Cairney

How's this potential Salahless/Kaneful WC look?

    Patr, Ryan
Alonso, Mendy, Shaw, Wan B, 4.0
    Hazard, Mane, Maddison, Fraser, Hoijberg
    Kane, Aguero, Ings

Not activated it yet, Leicester's fixtures are ridiculous now, so wanted at least Maddison in there

  11. Mo Salah or No Salah?

    Gonna wade in on the Salah debate;

    The pros of keeping:

    1) There is nothing to suggest Salah will significantly regress from last season's superhuman efforts, stats are all in his favour

    2) No prem team has really showed that they can deal with Salah yet, Leicester sure as hell didn't, he just had an off day in front of goal

    3) Hard to rebuy without a wildcard( which many won't still have by then)

    4) He's such an easy captain option, so consistent

    The pros of selling:

    1) Liverpool have a very tricky and busy fixture schedule incoming and a squad better placed to deal with this, will inevitably eat in to Salah's premier league pitch time

    2) Mane is fit and raring to go, he could match Salah for 3 mill less

    3) Last season owning Salah did not compromise our teams one bit, Hazard was relatively poor and Sanchez was woeful, Kdb solid but outshone by a cheaper Sterling. This season having Salah means we miss out on a revitalised Hazard and a premium priced Sterling, those two are more than capable of matching him

    4) Stating the obvious but the money saved is so so useful

In conclusion there is no right answer to this conundrum except to say selling Salah is definately viable. It all comes down to the type of manager you are, are you able to take the rank hit in your stride when the inevitable haul comes or does the thrill of seeking those lesser owned players, albeit premium options, speak to you. It certainly speaks to me, he's nowhere near my team

The biggest pro is that Hazard has better fixtures and Salah’s price is not going to rise. As you say, changing via WC makes little sense to me because it’s then difficult to get Salah back after distributing the funds (which we all would). So maybe with 2 FT going front Salah to Haz and upgrading somebody like Zaha whose injury sounds a bit more serious. Of course, despite some of the pathetic Haz fanboys on here who sound like adolescents worshipping a hero, we all know he is a troll. He was 5 minutes from blanking yesterday against a team people on here had you believe would be rolled over. Flip side is that I don’t know how much Salah’s minutes will be managed. They are tough games but ones they need to win so if they are winning with 15 to go, then he probably comes off. Ironically, with the CL starting, I would be more worried about his starts and game time if Liverpool had easy games.

I have got Hazard in for Salah

Regardless of form those run of fixtures between the 2 international breaks did it for me. On paper Hazard next 2 fixtures are the easiest games you could wish for and Klopp is going to have to balance the game time and the fact he got hooked early yesterday showed that Klopp is already managing his game time.

I will reassess after the next international break

This is my plan also. He has too good underlying stats compared to Hazards, so not worth ditching yet. Planned wc strategy helps to get him back for fixture change if needed. And even without, it is only -4 to get him back anytime.

      Dropping Salah for Hazard

Salah has looked very good on the stats front, and Mane has seemed somewhat unsustainable (40% conversion rate currently, way above his 14% average last season), so I really don't think Mane over Salah is the way to go long term.

However, I can't see Salah's returns hitting the level you'd expect / want in the next 4, so swapping to Haz seems ideal. More importantly, it gives me the cash to being in Alonso, with a WC to fall back on in GW 8.

Might need to buy a bigger sofa for the Southampton game though 😉

For some pro-salah stats, I recommend checking out Adam Hopcroft on twitter.

To sell Salah would be like selling Messi or Ronaldo if they played in the premier league. He has to stay.

I've not had Salah at all and I am still top 100K. I can't really see how he can do as good as he did last year. Liverpool has better players this year, which will increase rotation risk. I'm happy without...

I'm mulling over Salah to Hazard for 4 GWs then re-buy on WC

In the next 4 I'll definitely be captaining Aguero at home to Fulham and Brighton

That leaves two possible Salah captaincies, one SOU, one MAN...so it's actually just the SOU game.

Getting Hazard, I'll captain him away at whipping boys WHM and away at SOU.

I'll still have Mane and Robertson throughout as cover if I do sell.

Think I'll probably go for it

Hard to rebuy without a wildcard? This is often banded about when it comes to getting or removing premium players. It's not hard and this is an exaggerated point which has become an erroneously accepted form of common sense thinking. It's usually two transfers. Hazard and Aubameyang to Salah and Mitro for example.

I'm keeping Salah, Mané and Robertson for Spurs and Southampton, obviously with Southampton the main target for captaincy, and hopefully a mega haul.

I'm more worried about acquiring Alonso than Hazard, but obviously covet those who are able to squeeze in both.

I'm definitely considering a Salah Kane switcheroo GW7+8 (Salah Arnautovic > Kane Moura perhaps), with Kane also auditioning for the Aguero slot GW9 onwards. The plan would then be to retrieve Salah for GW9, either via WC or shifting Kane or Kun on.

Mane is not matching him for 3m less as you said. He is destroying him for 3m less. Mane has 3 double digit hauls and Salah has none. Salah hasn't picked up a single bap. Mane has 8. Mane could be on some penalties. At least the ones he wins himself. Salah is below him in the pecking order in that aspect. Not having Salah means I can have Aguero, Hazard, Silva, Mkhitaryan and the trinity of Alonso, Mendy and Robertson while still maintaining a balanced squad and a decent bench. I don't fear Salah for the next 4 or 5. Its an easy decision for me. No Salah.

You have been very lucky Salah missed that many chances in the first four games. He could have killed you already.

So - you are absolutely right UNTIL luck does actually turn. Salah stats much better than Mané, as far as goal threat is concerned.

Mané currently is at his best, as in ‘the best he could ever be’.

Salah is at his worst - his conversion rate is really poor, and can only improve Id imagine.

          Their fortune will change.

This being said, the winners will be those who had Mané from the start and who will be smart enough to drop him for Salah at the right time.

I’m edging towards selling mane for haz and keeping Salah. It seems like the safer option as Salah is bound to hurt sellers with his rediculous ownership. He has missed some sitters so far this season but that won’t carry on forever.

There isn't really a great deal of point. What does the extra £3m buy, downgrading him to Mané? Anyone taking the game seriously enough already has the best premium defenders, and it's easy enough already to furnish your team with Salah, Hazard and Agüero, and still have enough for mid-price differentials. You can justify it to some extent by bringing Kane in, but you're ultimately just inheriting the same problem.

I’ve gone without Salah from gw1, which has turned out ok. But he’s absolutely terrifying to watch as a non owner, which translates into him being a great fantasy asset. Non owners have been lucky so far but he’s going to haul and hurt us soon (despite the fixtures). Alonso is the other player that I hate watching as a non owner. Got him in now.
Won’t take long before I upgrade Sterling to Salah.

Definetely keeping Salah. His underlying stats and performances are just as good as last year, only lacks a little bit of sharpness in front of goal atm as he did at the start of last season. Only a matter of time before he explodes. And I know I cant resist to get him straight back when that happens (and trollzard blanks). Think many players underestimate this point.

Dont think the fixtures are that bad from an attacking point of view either. Chelsea still looking a bit fragile and City at home smells goal fest. Dont want to plan for a gw8 wc either.

In terms of hazard he didnt convince me yesterday from a fpl point of view. Simply doesnt go for goal enough for 10.5. Could easily have blanked in another prime fixture.

Could always happen with a small sample size.

Been no Salah the whole season so far. Captaincy has been ok so far - Mane x 2 and Aguero x 2 for a total of 90 pts.

Have now got Auba to rotate the captaincy between Aguero and Auba with their home fixtures.

Will get Salah from GW9 when I wildcard.

Surely this is just a question of value for money. There is no doubt Salah will continue to score and assist and will probably end the season within the top 3 point scorers for the season. The question is all about what you do with the rest of the money you free up by not owning him.

Personally I don't think Hazard, Mane, Sterling etc. will score as many points as Salah overall. I am however trying to have a close look at what other positions I can improve on in the rest of my squad. As others have pointed out, captaincy is the other concern - you need someone just as reliable every week if you don't own Salah.

For me, captaincy is important. I don't think I will captain Salah in the 3 of the next 4 fixtures, so 13mil seems overpriced for someone who has to juggle CL, has tough fixtures and won't be captained.

RMT tools still suggests Salah will outscore Hazard in the next 4 matches except GW 5 when it looks a good move to bring Hazard in for one week.

    22. Jay_
        5 years, 8 months ago

I wildcarded all 3 of my Pool out. It was the cup draws that swung it. All of a sudden, their fixtures turned from tough to very tough. Saints home in gw6 now looks a rotation/ reduced minutes hotspot, it's crammed in the middle of some tough game's. That was the 1 game in the next 6 I needed Salah for Captain. I'm obviously still worried, like yesterday for instance, 20 minutes into the Pool game I felt I'd gone 1 week early. But will jumping back on be 1 week late? I ended up getting Hazard, Aub and Alonso for my 3 Pool (Salah, Firm, Robbo) and obvs tidied up bench and covered Wally wagon (went well). One horrible niggly feeling is knowing it's just temporary, gw 9 or 10 the latest, Salah is back so always in the back of my head, there's 1 eye on how to do it.

Concern with Mane over Salah is also consistency. Mane has been on great bursts in previous seasons but lacked consistency. Salah so far has been very solid and occasionally spectacular.

I dont think you need to compromise to get salah. I have him, hazard, mane, aguero and the holy trinity at the back. Plenty of low priced strikers and mid performing to beef up the other spaces.

For me its salah v kane and atm salah remains ahead. Hes on 30 pts after 4 games and hasn't exploded yet, sellers well regret the move in 4/5 weeks imo

Late to the party. I'm on my WC and he's out of my team. Keeping Mane. The only thing I'll add to the pros above is that until he scores a brace or better with maximum bonus there is a lid on Salah's price (and I don't need to hear that it could happen in the next GW - it's built in to my thinking). He can be be brought back with 2 - 3 transfers and I will try to keep one in the bank. (best laid plans, I know). Finally, if he blanks or getd pulled on 59 or 60 minutes - or Mane or Firmino outdo his points in the next GW - he will drop at least .1 probably .2 and quite possibly the full Monty in the (c)rush for the exits.

      Current team:
      Kepa
      Alonso-Mendy-Robbo-AWB
      Salah-Mane-Pedro-Walcott
      Aguero-Zaha

      Speroni-Kennedy-Daniels-Kamara

Could wildcard initially to this to beat any price changes:

      Kepa
      Alonso-Mendy-Robbo
Haz-Mane-Mkhi-Lucas-Richarlison (bench for AWB/Bennet first week)
      Aguero-Zaha/Arnie/Mitrovic

      Hamer-AWB-Bennet-Kamara

      Thoughts appreciated!

      Save or use wildcard?

Looking to ship PVA as Tomkins may still be out, would shift Salah to Mane, get rid of Bilva, Zaha + Cairney out injured, would upgrade Kamara also. My bench is weak.

      Patricio
      Alonso, Mendy, Robbo, PVA*, AWB
      Salah*, Hazard, Bilva*
      Aguero, Zaha*

      Stekelenburg*, Stephens, Kamara*, Cairney*

I think I would WC if you're set on getting rid of Salah

I've seen lots of frustration on here/twitter, but I have to say I'm loving this season so far. More options, more hits, more fear of missing out, more chaos. Anyone else?

Certainly beating last season so far, which I thought was one of the worst.

(even though I had a better start last season than this one)

I'm finding it enjoyable only because I've started decently. If I was doing terribly I'd probably disagree with you.

      Rate this wildcard 1st draft:

      Hart
      Mendy Bellerin Alonso
Hazard Mane Mkhitaryan Walcott (if fit)
      Firmino Aguero Wilson

      Wan-Bissaka Bennet Mcdonald

      Cheers!

Pretty good. Don't like the Hart pick, feel he might get dropped for Heaton or a returning Pope down the line and Burnley haven't looked solid anyway.

Yeah I’m still not sure who’s the best 4.5 GK right now, who would you pick?

            Patricio

            Or Ryan after GW8

      Thinking of WC for this:
      Patricio, Ryan
      Mendy, Alonso, TAA, Cook, AWB
      Mane, Hazard, Moura, Maddison, Neves
      Kane, Mitrovic, Wilson

      0 ITB

The only players I would be keeping are Mendy, Alonso, TAA, Moura, AWB, so 10 changes
      Thoughts please?

I like it. Will Moura keep his place with Son back?

Good question, his form is very good and I think he will get good game time. Richarlison could slot back in...

No City attack? What are you going to do when they beat Fulham and Cardiff 5-0?

Panic. It's the big flaw in my plan but as ever with City, who when the action is spread around and rotated?
Sterling looks good but Hazard looks more reliable to me
I can't fit in Aguero and Kane and I think the latter is the man to back now
          Who would you back?

Have decided to go for Kane over Hazard as I hope that Alonso/Kante will be enough Chelsea for now. How do these moves look:

Robertson Mane Tosun > Bennet Maddison Kane (-8)

Will be keeping Salah as I still think he's too dangerous not to have - thoughts appreciated

Mane is £3m less and 12 points ahead of Salah. Form better.
I agree it's time for Kane - for me at the expense of Aguero.

A very poor -8 in my opinion. Can you really see, kane, Maddison and Bennett scoring 8 points more than the other 3 next gw.

Thanks both - will reconsider as I may prefer to have Mane/Robertson than Salah
