The current top-scoring Fantasy Premier League midfield asset versus the record points holder for a single season. It needn’t be an either/or, of course, and plenty of FPL managers own both Sadio Mane (£9.9m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) at this stage of the campaign.

With Jurgen Klopp hinting at rotation, Liverpool’s fixtures about to take a turn for the worse – the Reds face Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City in the next four Gameweeks – and a premium midfield alternative in Eden Hazard (£10.7m) in a rich vein of form, however, some Fantasy bosses may be considering jettisoning one of these two heavy hitters in the short-term at least.

In this Members’ piece, we will compare Salah and Mane directly while also taking a look at both Liverpool midfielders’ wider appeal compared to the alternatives in their position.

Ignore the wildcard as it's a waste to plan it for one specific move, it's basically a -8. Planning in transfers is always a bad idea as something else will come up:

          Salah CHE(A) + MAN CITY (H) + 8
          versus
          Kane HUD (A) + CAR (H)

It's not as clear cut to me. Also depends on who the other two players are?

Considering Kane as a captaincy option GW7-8or9
Salah is an easy double FT switch and back and will be lowly favoured as a captaincy option those weeks, so less danger of a haymmering 🙂

Posted this a while ago but I think still relevant for those with the WC. Apologies if I'm spamming the place to death

For those who haven't played their wildcard and plan on waiting a little longer in the season, a great opportunity presents itself at game week 15 if one can wait that long. Here are the fixtures of some selected teams.

Spurs- Amazing stretch of games, starting xi would be a little more settled and they seem to tend to start slow and then pick up as the season goes. From gameweek 15
Sou, Lei, Burnley, Eve, Bou, Wolves, Cardiff, Mun(at home and we dont know if December could be peak Mou implosion period), Fulham, Wat, Newcastle, Lei, Burnley. Kane, Alli/Eriksen/Son and a Spurs def look intriguing options.

West Ham- Cardiff, Palace, Fulham, Watford, Soton, Burnley, Brighton Arsenal (at home and early signs show leaky Arsenal defence), Bou, Wolves. Arnautovic/Hernandez (if he starts) look key plus maybe one of Yarmolenko/Felipe Anderson and Fab(CS and save points)

City- A little more rough than others but they could possible be fixture prrof.
Wat, Che(away but Sarris Chelsea isn't Contes Chelsea), Eve, Palace, Lei, Soton, Liv(at home and guaranteed goals), Wolves, Hud, Newcastle. Starting striker plus defensive option look intriguing.

Newcastle. Short sexy run. Eve Wolves, Hud, Fulham. Defensive option or Dubravka and Kenedy at 5m ish could be gold.

Of course all this is subjective and I could easily be saying nonsense.

Tl;dr. Gw 15 onwards looks a great time to WC. Spurs have the best run followed by West Ham and City and Newcastle look a great way to set a template.

      Thanks for this!

Just interested what you think about Christmas rotation affecting this. I wildcarded around this time last year (it didn’t work as immediately picked up a load of injuries) because I wanted to strengthen my bench over be Christmas period. Is there a reason no one in the community talks about saving their wildcard for this?

      1. Jealous Viper

Beats me as to why everyone seems to think it should only be gw 8 or now for the WC.
Rotation around Christmas is definitely a factor so a strong bench is key. However it's easy to fill up your team with fairly nailed on players from here. Kane, Eriksen are certain and provably even alli. Arnie is nailed even if he may be reverse oop, a WHU def should be nailed by then(I believe Fredericks who could offer great value). Dubravka and Lascelles as well with Kenedy maybe.
City as usual a minefield but don't be surprised if one of aguero or jesus is out and they have just one recognized striker. Mendy seems like the least likely City def to be rested outside Ederson.
In addition outside this teams you will have some players who you trust. Of course fpl can just mess you up with tough luck but lots of fairly nailed players in that combo

    3. Jumpingjalapeno
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

Well said. However, all is not lost for wildcarders.
1, we will all probably be carrying city assets so done have to worry about bringing more in
2, Can get NEW assets as early as GW9. The next two ganeweeks look to favour FUL and CAR, but after that you could easily hold allowing to go into GW 14 with 2FT to start considering mini WC to get WHM and SPURS players in.
The prob with WCing for Xmas is there always seem to be big rotation. So I avoid.
      Cheers

Very well said. A good alternative view. I feel even with the rotation we expect, one can fit in at least 13 quality players who are fairly nailed. Of course lots of things you can't plan for like Kane picking a hammy

No, this is an important strategy discussion and needs even an fixture article. Or this needs to be a hot topic at least. Now is good time to think longer term strategy.

For comparison there is also fixture swing coming sooner, and they need some comparison. For us who are offloading Liverpool assets and spreading the money, wc before gw9 looks easy strategy. Yet last spring we saw, that the difference between wc timing was not very important as long as it was well planned. The "dead end" strategy worked anyway fine for me as even ditching Salah.

The template is changing now and handling this first fixture change without wc is a problem, but needs to be discussed. CP has Everton away gw9 and then bad fixtures start. Pool players are all needed for gw9. City might be pretty fixture proof, so no worries. Chelsea has ManU home gw9 and that needs monitoring. Arnie in probably for gw9 or 10. This is slightly annoying since the change is not happening in one gw.

So the main question is, which fixture change demands more wc?

      1. Jealous Viper
        • 7 Years

Yeah think we should get either a hot topic or an article on the use of the Wildcard and when the best time could be. It's very possible someone could give an analysis of why gw8 is the best time. Like I said previously, applied a strategy similar to this last year and it gave me a massive boost up to the top of my ML from which I never really came down

I like to play for fixtures usually so contemplated a move to Hazard from Salah just for 4 weeks, but as i see it if not done either last week or this week the argument for this trade is weakened. Wish i have done it but for me it would have required either hits or wc, and despite the fact that Liverpool have difficult fixtures on paper doesn´t mean that Salah or Mané will get lesser points than Hazard during this time. Rotation is a factor of course but if you look at it closely i think the game vs Chelsea in EFL cup actually gives the rotation worry some clues, as Salah/Mane/Firmino probably will be rested for that game, thus making the intervall between matches much more manageable, three games in one week but then there´s a IT break, which will ease the burden of 3 games in a week. Always the danger of them subbed after an hour/70 minutes the odd game or two. Difficult maintain that conversion rate but Liverpool also not been at their best so far, i think they will score aplenty and then the conversion rate may go down a bit but more goals will most likely mean more goal involvements so iwould´nt concern myself to much with the numbers at this stage.

Salah is still good choice and better than Mané, but for me the situation became to the money. By ditching Salah temprarily (have had Mané from the start) I can afford to get in both Haz and Dilva. So it was whether to have Salah, Mane and Bilva or Mane, Dilva and Haz. Going without Salah is risky, but for these fixtures I prefer having both Haz and Dilva. I am not totally happy with it, but didn't want to downgrade the Holy trinity or forwards (Kun, Wilson) either. Both Haz and Dilva have high roof also for these fixtures. And Salah minutes have already been managed.

Yes and no. In case of injury anywhere anyehere in the team (besides Kamara or WanB) it is to downgrade that player and get Salah in for -4. (I have some money itb, but lacking for straight transfer after bringing Dilva in). Or downgrade Bavies to Shaw and take a hit to get Salah in. If he looks like captain material, I see no problem doing it.

Did you go for Lossl just cause you have Hamer? Think there are better 4.5 GKs out there in Patricio and Ryan

With that defence you are likely to bench one or two from Ramsey, Maddison, Mitrovic and Ings each week. Seems like it'll end in tears with benched points

What is happening with these transfers?
2h ago Mane needed 149 transfers for rise, but now 2680!! (fplstatistics)
Was it a bug, error or something else?

Was debating Salah & Mkhi switch to Mane & Hazard for a -4 but this article I think has swayed me back to keeping Salah for now.

Whats everyone elses thoughts? Article stats were way more conclusive then i thought they would be

I'm on WC and was considering Salah to Mane, but Salah's stats convinced me to stick with him. That and his high ownership, which could mean a big drop in rankings if and when he does explode.

Which WC team do you prefer?
    (A)
    -Patricio-
    -Alonso-Mendy-Shaw-
    -Salah-Hazard-Maddison-Pedro-
    -Aguero-Mitrovic-Wilson-
    (B)
    -Ederson*-
    -Alonso-Mendy-Shaw-
    -Mane*-Hazard-DSilva*-Pedro-
    -Aguero-Vardy*-Wilson-

Pedro/Madds will become Richarlison in both teams in 2 weeks

I don't like teams without Salah, but as it's a consideration for you then B.
Mitrovic seems great value though, it's Maddison I'm not sure about & not sure Ederson's worth the extra and use of a Mci spot post-wildcard

It's clear to see Salah is right on the edge of finding the net again, it's how long you're willing to hold out for at that cost.

    1. Kellz86
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

He's been on the edge all season really.

I guess I asked myself "Does Salah warrant the (c) in the next 4?" Out of those I'd only consider SOT to (c) Salah.

So being able to put a team together with an extra 3.1mil by going Salah to Mane that includes Alonso, Hazard, Moura, Aguero, Lacazette, Pogba I feel there is more than enough chance to cover anything Salah does in the next 4.

I'd like to see how rotation pans out for City/Liverpool - so I've got an idea to drop Mane + Laca/Aguero in order to get Salah back in the future.

Well these are at least the lies I told myself to justify feeling okay dropping Salah.
