There were impressive performances for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Andrew Robertson on international duty on Monday night.

That may be of encouraging news to their owners currently worried about whether to start them for difficult fixtures in Gameweek 5.

All that and more Fantasy Premier League talking points from another night of international action in this latest Scout Notes article.

SERBIA 2-2 ROMANIA

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.7m) – 90 minutes
Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) – 19 minutes

Aleksandar Mitrovic continued his blistering start to the season by adding another two goals to his tally. The Fulham man has now found the net six times in the first five matches of 2018/19 with two assists to boot, one of his club and one for his country. In his last 30 matches in all competitions he has scored 23 goals.

Such form should ease any concerns among Mitrovic’s 19% ownership about starting him in Gameweek 5 when he faces a trip to Manchester City. The champions remain without a clean sheet in their first two home matches of the campaign while Fulham have registered more big chances than either of the sides to have already scored at the Etihad Stadium in 2018/19.

SCOTLAND 2-0 ALBANIA

Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) – 90 minutes
Kevin McDonald (£4.5m) – 45 minutes
Stuart Armstrong (£5.3m) – 45 minutes
Scott McTominay (£4.4m) – 11 minutes

Andrew Robertson was a standout performer for Scotland as they recorded a much-needed win over Albania. The Liverpool man has recently been handed the captain’s armband and he led by example at Hampden Park. Much of the play went down the left side of the pitch and it was Robertson’s cross for Steven Naismith that created Berat Djimsiti’s own-goal.

There was disappointment for the 6% of Fantasy managers invested in Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser (£5.6m) as it was revealed he picked up a knock in training with Scotland and missed the match with Albania. He is now a doubt for Gameweek 5.

Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m) and Callum Paterson (£5.3m) were unused substitutes for Alex McLeish’s Scotland side.

PORTUGAL 1-0 ITALY

Rui Patrício (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
Rúben Neves (£5.2m) – 90 minutes
Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) – 90 minutes

Jorginho (£5.1m) – 90 minutes
Emerson Palmieri (£5.3m) – 16 minutes

There was a positive update on Bernardo Silva after he played the full 90 minutes for Portugal as they beat Italy in their UEFA Nations League debut. The Manchester City man had revealed last week that he came out of a friendly match at half-time with a groin complaint, but his run out on Monday night allays any injury fears ahead of Gameweek 5.

Rui Patrício got another 90 minutes under his belt, which should come as no surprise. But there was another full appearance for his Wolves colleague Rúben Neves who appears to be slowly establishing himself in the international picture. Southampton’s Cedric Soares was an unused substitute again.

Jorginho was the only Premier League player to play the whole match for Italy. Chelsea teammate Emerson Palmieri made his debut for the Azzurri while Davide Zappacosta (£5.2m) was not in the matchday squad.

SWEDEN 2-3 TURKEY

Victor Lindelöf (£4.9m) – 90 minutes

Caglar Söyüncü (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
Cenk Tosun (£7.0m) – 90 minutes

Everton striker Cenk Tosun played his part in a dramatic comeback Nations League win for Turkey on Monday night. He provided the assist for Emre Akbaba’s first goal of the night, an 88th-minute equaliser.

Elsewhere there was a second full appearance of the campaign for Leicester new boy Caglar Söyüncü as he builds up his match fitness. Watford’s Ken Sema (£4.9m) was an unused substitute for Sweden.

What do you do in FPL that goes against one of the unwritten rules of FPL?

For me it's early transfers. I wait as long as I can, but always keep an eye on predicted price rises/falls. If it looks like a player I want or want rid of is either going to rise or fall I'll make the transfer early and take my chances with injuries.

I just don't agree with the wait until Friday/Saturday deadline school of thought, especially early season. I feel making money on your rivals can be too big an advantage to pass up.

In my 13 Seasons of playing I can only recall a couple of times I've been stung (probably more likely forgotten some).

How about doing the same by taking a lot of hits?!? Kun to Auba and back to Kun and then again and again perhaps a couple of times 😉

That strategy might give some sort of fame and guarantee the 1st place in the other end of the line.

I completely agree. I don’t even wait as long as I can. I just get the transfer done and dusted early and move on with my week. As you say, it’s rare, like super rare that it backfires.

I am fully about going with my gut, and that’s why I do transfers early and shoot from the hip. The longer you wait the longer you can likely talk yourself out of what is a good move by overthinking it, especially being on here and listening to a weeks worth of herd moves.

So I'm also not too bothered about hits.

One thing that I always ask myself however is how long the player I'm bring in with the hit is going to be in my team for (baring unforeseen circumstances). If it's over say 4 games then really that hit is costing me 1 point per those 4 games.

If I don't plan on having the player in long term, probably not worth the hit.

I can see what you mean by TV is overrated, often the players you get in won't leave your team for the rest of the season so you'll never see the money you make off them.

For me it's more a case of getting them in cheap before I can no longer afford them. If I get Alonso in for 6.5 vs a Mini-League rival getting them in for 6.7 that's 0.2 I can spend elsewhere that they can't.

I very rarely have any money in the bank so feel the need get on the rises and avoid the drops quickly.

Its actualy opposite of that. I'm never going to keep a player for whole season, whether its someone of essential status or not. Thats why whether I pay 6.7 or 6.5, it wont really matter. If I pay more, I'll get back more when I sell, so not a big deal...

Not having money for desired move is different story.

Not too shabby a strategy this season but I've always put "too much money" in defence.

I'm so greedy with what I want from my defenders - always after that extra return, and I get far too annoyed at late CS wipeouts!

I think at one point last season I fielded

      Walker - Alonso - Bellerin - Davies - Bertrand.

Which is *utterly bananas* looking back.

With 3atb and wing backs becoming more prominent the past 2 seasons it's not a bad strategy.

        6.5 Alonso / 6.0 Mendy / 6.0 Robertson vs 6.5 / 6.0 Midfielders

No >6.5 midfielder really matches those defenders attacking returns and that's even before considering Clean Sheets!

Its a good strategy every season 🙂 The "Holy Trinity" of Alonso/Robbo/Mendy will soon become a quartet at least.

PVA a good candidate I reckon. Underlyings look good + has the fixtures. Prob needs Zaha to dovetail with though.

But yeah, generally speaking I like the strategy (probably too much!) - only issue with it is inflexibility of funds, but that can always be rectified by just making sure you can get any player in 2 moves through your MF/ST choices.

I always find myself with 1 or 2 players outside the template at the start of the season and on Wildcards. Trying to foresee the next bandwagon before it gets moving.

This and exactly this. The snob in me can't take it if someone who asks 2345 RMTs ends up with the same set of players as me. Almost like I hang around here to identify bandwagons and deliberately avoid them. Yep, no Richarlison, No Pedro, No Wally, No Mkhi, No Arnie..you can go on. The essential premiums I get, the rest are fairly different. Oh yeah, of course, not many points because of that too.

Double- and triple-ups seem to scare a lot of people, but I don't give them a second thought unless I'm planning to rotate the players (which is pretty difficult if they have the same fixtures!).

I remember the end of the 2016/17 season, I had 5 GRs between 5-99k in a row whilst simultaneously owning 3 high-scoring Liverpool players (incidentally the same year the FPL winner never owned a single Liverpool player).

The triple-up wasn't a worthwhile differential it because it was a triple up, or because it was a differential, but because the players were great options, with many managers happening to avoid one or two of them due to fears that doubles and triples are somehow inherently risky, as well as the feeling of danger that permeates FPL communities from relatively low ownership.

Whether I'm right or wrong, there is often strong opposition to doubles and triples on here, and it's one of unwritten rules that I'm more than happy to break 🙂

Now I have triple Chelsea and City, but only double Pool after ditching Salah to make some upgrades before wc time. Yet I avoid having the players I rotate from same team 😉

And early in the season and before bgw:s hits are not that bad. Last year I took plenty (-16) getting Lanzini and Arnie in and got rid of dead wood. GW rank was about 15 over average even after hits since both Arnie and Lanzini hauled...

Yeah, I'm fanatically anti "coverage" and have always gone for triple-ups. Bit miffed that it's become respectable to triple on City this year. I've decided the top 3 at the end of the season will be City, Liverpool and Chelsea so I've tripled on all of them (helps that Chelsea aren't in the Champers). I also started with filling out the last 6 places with triple Wolves and Palace - only got AWB and Bennett left of those and kinda regret dumping my Wolves now.

Was it Southampton defense double/triple up that brought home stacks of points a few seasons back?

This is one that highlights how people get caught up in rules they hear on here over and over again but maybe haven't ever actually thought about themselves. Because so many other people give advice against it it must be the wrong thing to do.

I can never quite wrap my head around when the best time to punt on a captain is.

Is it when your chasing your Mini-League leader or when you're out in front.

I wouldn't say I punt on captains per se but sometimes take a calculated gamble to go against the grain.

When you think they have an opportunity to get more points. Watch out for high ceiling popular captains (e.g. Aguero at home vs dross), but there's not necessarily a 'bad' or 'better' time.

If you're chasing, you should know who your ML rival will captain and avoid them imo.

For me it’s mostly being too stubborn and digging myself into a hole.
It can be being stubborn about a player and keeping him for too long or refusing to get him in because he “can’t possibly keep it up”.
Being too stubborn about a certain strategy/tactic has also hurt me in the past, examples could be following a decided DGW strategy after it clearly wasn’t the best move or refusing to change team structure from 3-4-3.
I think stubbornness is a flaw many FPL managers have - a great manager should be flexible and adaptable...

I break the "always start the attacking player" rule often. I'm more interested in starting the player that's likely to get the most points, whether that's a defender, midfielder or striker.

However sometimes I overdo it, like when I benched Vardy away to Spurs - I guess I thought Vertonghen had a better chance of keeping a CS at home to Leicester (who weren't scoring many goals back then) than Vardy had a chance of scoring, but luckily Vertonghen got injured in the warm-up and Vardy's 13 points autosubbed on for me.

I always put a player in my squad based on how "weird" their name sounds to me. Usually is a cheap player for the bench. My last season's favourite was Rajiv Van La Parra! I took him on my team purely on an article i red about the origin of his name! So for example if i have to choose a 4.5m 5th mf or a 4m defender first thing on my criteria is their name

Don't dislike points on the bench. The more the better I say, they'll be on the bench because they've a tough fixture, next week they'll be playing, and it won't cost me a transfer to get them in, unlike everyone else.

I agree - but with a minor caveat, The high scoring benched played must not be a highly owned one ..... not a particularly likely scenario I agree.

It's obviously tough benching a ton of points but I agree with what you're saying. It's an indicator of having a flexible squad.

I'm a) way too punty and b) way too stubborn.

Punty inc captaining Callum Wilson for his hatty last year, but also captaining Jordan Ayew for his red card.

Stubborn is that if there's a bandwagon and I wasn't ahead of the game on it then I tend not follow the crowd.
Fortunately this year I've had Pereya, Richarlison, Mendy, Mane etc in from the start. I'm already refusing to get distracted by Pedro, Walcott etc!

Early transfers to build Value. (comes in handy in the long run) Nothing worse than being 0.1 short of the perfect looking team on WC...

I am willing to take hits to gain or maintain value (only if I believe I will recoup the -4 that week)

Personal strategy of going against the grain for certain high priced big hitters. *My opinion is if they miss, I will shoot up the ranks, if they hit, the value spread through my team can hopefully match the score.

Title is unwritten fpl rules for success,
Not being afraid to take hits, and going against the popular big hitters... Not sure how that mirrors that of the "herd" but if so, sure!

Ignore TV. Pretty obvious but you look at all the top players, they almost all make transfers exclusively on a Friday. All that extra info. Plus I noticed (from experience of years of rash transfers and SV chasing) that the next week you'd want a completly different player in that spot that you transferred your 6.5 mid that was dropping (e.g Walcott) for an average player (e.g Maddison) just coz one was dropping and one was rising but now you've committed to your player in for the sake of .2 rather than assessing all the info and potentially saving and a full restructure the following week. Or at least plan towards that. A team you want long term. I'm by no means a top player but since I implemented this simple 'rule' my ranks have got better.

I rarely pick a perma-bench midfielder. Rotating mids/forwards to save transfers when one is out.

Prefer top defenders too but that's never a rule I strictly follow.

More aggressiv with taking hits when I needed.
Sometimes its better to avoid other times its better to do it. People have this mindset where they are going to avoid it at any cost. Thats not always the optimal choice really.

First half of the season trade early to build value. Second half of the season trade late to maximise points.

People are talking about TV like its the difference between having Salah and Walcott when doing WC2.

Usually the player weve gained value on, are players we'd like to continue having, either because they are on form, or because we know that they'll be a pain getting back in, as the difference between selling price and buying price will be steep.

Most managers playing the game won't see a huge difference in the value of the team their fielding, even though their team value might be very different.

The way I see it, the benefit of having a bit extra value built, is that it might give you a couple of 0.1 cushions to sleep on when you dont want to commit to an early transfer for different reasons. Later in the season, those 0.1 cushions can help you get the player you want, even if they rise in price.

SV is the important measure. I would be over 102.5 TV if I kept Mane, instead I’ll take 101.1 SV. The extra 1.0-2.0 SV over rivals can make a big difference coming home. Not the be all end all but it does help

Gaining value from players and then being able to cash in on that value can be lucrative, but it depends on so many factors.

              Early on
              1) Low owned, low/mid price players must do well. Preferably slowly. I.e. averaging 4-6 points per week, rather than coming in with a 14 in week 1 (and 500,000 people transferring him in one day). These players gain consistently 0.1/0.2 per week until they become essential
              2) Big names flop, but everyone thinks they will turn it round, so don't give up entirely on them.

              Later on
              1) The players that have made you a fortune start underperforming, and you want to get rid, permanently.
              2) The premium players start smashing it.

            Two things

            1) Early transfers (especially up till about Jan) - I like to move fast and stick to the obvious and catch rises/avoid falls

            2) Hits - I take lots of hits, probably took about 100 points worth last season

How about this for a WC Team?
          Ryan (Button)
          Mendy Alonso Holebas (AWB Bennett)
          Mané Hazard D.Silva Pedro (Hojbjerg)
          Agüero Vardy Mitrovic

Pedro will probably become Ritchie Rich in 2 GW's

Is D Silva worth the extra over Moura? I have Aguero and Mendy but no Spurs cover.

I am on currently on Moura and used the extra cash for Fraser as 5th mid but now he is injured I am tempted to downgrade Fraser to Billing and switch Moura to D Silva...

            Cheers.

What to do with this lot?

            Fabianski (Foster)
            Alonso, Mendy, Robertson (Wan-Bissaka) (Peltier)
Salah, Mane, Pedro, B. Silva (Stephens)
            Agüero (C), Ings, Zaha

Mane and B. Silva > Hazard and Maddison worth a -4?

No direct way. No transfers made and money itb + team value changing gives it away though.

Then we have the same TV, I'm also on WC and strongly considering using this team as well. Only 3 doubtful positions are Cedric, Maddison, Lukaku which I think I'll replace with Pereira, Lucas, Vardy +0.8 itb

You've enough cover for Shaw so hold on. Better option might be to use those funds in midfield depending on what we learn this week.

Looks good, hold Shaw this week. Next week you can take a decision on whether to hold depending on how Utd look or ship, maybe fund an upgrade to Richarlison when he's back.

Don't turn your back on Jesus!!
            See the light people!

Based on SkyBet Anytime Odds for this weekend:
            Aguero 2/5
            Jesus 4/6
            Hazard 10/11
            Morata 5/6
            Giroud 5/6
            Kane 1/1
            Salah 11/10
            Auba 11/10
            Pedro 6/5
            Lukaku 6/4

Is the rotation risk putting people off?
He's rested from Brazil games, typically plays at home, and stats are right up there with the best.

Need a better 4th midfielder, personally would downgrade Ederson (assuming you're set on Lukaku) to upgrade Kante to a better option. Also double Wolves def is a bit much.

Yeah alright smart4ss 😉 hes got a lucky deflected goal and thats about it. This year's Matt Ritchie

Yet hes in all WC teams because other people just pick him because they see others picking him.

I’m not convinced by him yet either. Personally I am thinking more about getting Richarlison back.
I think the only reason he is getting so much attention is because of his fixtures and loads of people are shipping Walcott, Mkhi, Bilva and not a lot of optoons left in the mid price mids.
That being said, I do think he can become a decent option, as he has looked pretty good from what I have seen. But I am definitely waiting to see what impact Vardy back will have etc.

Just based on potential so far. Lucky goal and lucky assists his only return till now. I dont mind missing a couple of hauls. if he does prove me wrong then I will get him.
