The Fantasy Football Scout community have been hard at it again over the last seven days, producing the usual superb array of articles and tables as reflect on Gameweek 6 and look ahead to Gameweek 7.

The hot topics, meanwhile, have ranged from Harry Kane to the psychology of Fantasy managers.

Our latest Community Round-up feature also looks over the various tournaments and mini-leagues that involve FFS users.

The Hottest Topics

Rewind back to the beginning of the week and the FFS community were sharing their tales of joy and woe in our regular Rough with the Smooth hot topic.

We also asked if any of you were interested by three in-form premium forwards and were interested to hear about your thoughts on heavy hitters in defence.

Legomane asked if captaincy was losing its lustre, while one candidate for the armband in Gameweek 7 – Harry Kane – was the focus of a hot topic started by Rotation’s Alter Ego.

“RAE” also helpfully trawled through the Scoutcast again to bring us the timestamps of each section.

We have yet to have a Premier League sacking this season – but this hot topic pondered which managers seem most at risk.

Speculation on which player would be the breakout star of Gameweek 7 was rife, while G-Whizz looked ahead to this weekend too with his Doosra Stats, clean sheet probabilities and fixture odds.

FPL “culture” was the focus of two more hot topics: Irbox‘s look at the psychology of Fantasy managers and NOMONEY‘s request for an update on the common abbreviations.

@ocprodigy rounded up the results of the Scout Picks Challenge for Gameweek 5 and Gameweek 6, meanwhile.

Community Articles

Two to bring you this week, both of them regular features:

Community Tables

Here is just a small selection of the excellent array of public tables created this week and available in the Members’ area:

Remember, to see your table featured here (if that’s what you want!) please ensure you include a description explaining the purpose of it.

Community Tournaments

Cosmin Rotaru still leads our public FFS League but has dropped a couple of places to 14th in the world rankings.

Andrew McKinnon still leads our FFS Members League after playing his Wildcard, and is now up to 34th overall.

RedLightning has regained the lead in FFS Mods & Cons after playing his Wildcard. He finally got points for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has sat on his bench all season up until Gameweek 6. The Crystal Palace man came in for Marko Arnautovic.

Ashley Humphrey is the new leader of RedLightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league and is up to 28th overall, without using any chips. This is Ashley’s 13th season, with two top 10k finishes (1181st in 2012/13 and 4424th in 2014/15).

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that CALM will be the charity we will donate to after our next charity tournament.

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. In 2016, 76% of all UK suicides were male.

The case for benching Alonso before Robertson.

I've hardly seen anyone benching Alonso this week or advising anything other than playing him. Is it purely fear / high ownership? On paper it's the worst possible fixture for a left back - unlikely to keep a CS against Liverpool and unlikely to push as far forward as usual as dealing with Salah and TAA. His penalty box touches and shots on goals have also dried up significantly in the past two weeks already. So I can only assume it's that feeling that he just might score, and everybody has him.

The way I see it, Robertson is more likely to keep a CS / get an assist / get bonus points than Alonso because Liverpool are more likely to boss the game. You know if LIV keep a clean sheet then Robertson is getting BP too, probably all 3 unless they score a bunch of goals. I don't see a 1-0 or 2-0 to LIV being that unlikely, but I do see a 1-0 or 2-0 to CHE being quite unlikely.

Anyway, I'm probably risking it. And if Alonso does haul, well that's the way it goes. Thoughts?

Do you have a backline of Alonso, Robertson, Trippier, Walker? That is the only backline I can think of where this would be a decision to be made.

Okay, without looking it up, what do you think the comparison between Alonso and Robertson is over the past 2 gameweeks for:

        1. Penalty area touches
        2. Shots in the box

Keeping in mind that Alonso has faced Cardiff and West Ham. Robertson has faced Spurs and Southampton.

Alonso is the most OOP player I have ever seen in my life. Maybe his touches have been down lately but I'm sure if you look at a heatmap he's in all the right places to get chances. He's up for all set pieces, not to mention one of the best free kick takers in the league, and he always stays up after while play continues.

At the end of the day it's really just a coinflip, there's no way to tell what will happen in such a high profile game.

            Nope, not really.

For the record (last two matches totals):
Penalty area touches: Alonso 1, Robertson 2
Shots in the box: Alonso 0, Robertson 1

Heat map for Alonso nothing to get excited about either. And now he has to somehow deal with Salah and TAA as opposed to Cardiff. Yes he loves bombing forward, but Sarri is not a complete moron, and Alonso does actually have to do some defending this game.

Very little in those stats, small enough sample and numbers to be completely irrelevant imo. Good to know though.

Definitely agree he will be pinned back more, I know from personal experience playing left back against the occasional dangerous player.

    3. MTPockets

I never bench Alonso. But in comparison terms, VVD is a doubt which may impact Liverpool's cs prospects.

I've given the advice to bench Alonso but if Virg. is out ! ..I'm a little unsure now.

Let's face it, this is a tough mash up to predict and I personally don't see a goal fest here. He's on my bench at present.

That's the thing, I'm not saying that playing Alonso is foolish. What I'm interested in is why everyone is absolutely adamant about playing him regardless of any specific factors related to this week's matches. There is a strong case for playing other defenders this week - for me they are Doherty, PVA and Robertson.

I know hardly anyone else would play PVA ahead of Alonso, but I always go with my gut not herd mentality so I'm not bothered about that. I think PVA is more likely than Alonso to both keep a CS and score a goal ... this week. The past and future don't matter, it's purely about right now.

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 10 months ago

Historically Alonso has (often random) hauls. The only way to catch them is to be playing him. You're right that on a specific game vs game basis this one isn't particularly promising, but starting him when I own him is just a personal rule.

No, I'm with you. There have been voices here who are benching him and or the Pool boys though they are in the minority. You just have to play it as you see it under your own analysis as Camzy has done below me.

Big decision for all this week,

Agreed. I only really have one rule in FPL - trust my own analysis and instincts combined. There's nothing worse than thinking something all week then bottling it, only for it pan out the way you expected but you had jumped back in line with the herd out of fear. It's so frustrating.

I'd much rather gamble based on my own thinking and have Alonso score a goal that makes me look stupid, than the other way around where I've played him for his 1 point while Robertson and PVA haul.

Fair play, at least you have a reason. I think most don't really have a reason other than "it's Alonso".

What would surprise you more though, a Liverpool CS or a Chelsea CS? For me, the latter seems extremely unlikely. But Chelsea not scoring wouldn't be that shocking, would it? They couldn't score against West Ham. They are almost a one-man team in attack right now, it's Hazard or bust.

He was on fire before the red card and scored a brace for Brazil. I just rewatched match of the day 2 from last week and he looked very dangerous, would have scored too if DCL had squared a simple pass. Plus he's playing Fulham (arguably the worst defence in the league) at home.

Not sure but I'd choose a defender.

This is probably the hardest benching decision I've had in all my years. Thoughts welcomed.

    Hennessey (bou)
Doherty (SOT) - Bennett (SOT) - WanBissaka (bou)
Hazard (LIV) - Mane (che) - Richarlison (FUL) - Fraser (CPL)
Aguero (BHA) - Arnautovic (MUN) - Mitrovic (eve)

Fabianski (MUN) - Alonso (LIV) - Robertson (che)

Hate playing my attackers against my defenders, so strongly considering playing Fabianski/Alonso instead of Hennessey/WanBissaka. Alonso v Robertson is a slight conundrum but I'm backing Chelsea for the enjoyment as a fan.

Silly. 100% have to play Alonso over AWB. Robbo ahead of AWB as well. In fact why double on Wolves defence? Play Hennessy, Doherty, Alonso, Robbo with Bennett first sub and AWB second. Palace won’t keep a clean away to a very attacking Bournemouth unit

I don't disagree. Double wolves is a certainty for me. I don't think Palace will keep a clean sheet either but they have been very solid, and Bournemouth did blank last week. I think you've convinced me to go Fabianski and Alonso. United is bound to get about 20 shots in that game which means save points and if they keep it clean max bonus.

I'd play Alonso over Bennett. Robertson vs AWB is more difficult but personally have AWB ahead of TAA.

Here is my proposed team for GW7, If I make the following moves using my 2FT:

    Mendy + Hughes -> Doherty + Richarlison

    Patricio
    Doherty Wan-Bissaka Robertson
    B.Silva Maddison Mane Richarlison Hazard
    Aguero Zaha

    Foster King Azpilicueta Tomkins

No Spurs is a worry but at the same dont fancy loosing my Liverpool assets for 2 GW's to then bring them straight back in .

    Any Suggestions

    Thanks

    Fabianski (Foster)
    Alonso Robertson Mendy (PvA Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah Mane Fraser Richarlison (Gunnarsson)
    Aguero Zaha Ings

1FT, 0m ITB. WC still intact. Which move?
    (A) Mendy to Trippier
    (B) Mane and Zaha to 4.3m mid and Kane (play PvA) (-4)
    (C) Save FT
