Suspensions

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Fantasy Premier League players – and indeed have already resulted in a suspension for one FPL favourite.

Jose Holebas (£4.9m) became the first Premier League player of 2018/19 to accumulate five yellow cards and will now miss Watford’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Gameweek 9 a result.

The occasion of the Greek left-back’s suspension and that it’s the international break seems a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

With the yellow card amnesty not until after the completion of Gameweek 19 (after which the threshold moves up to ten yellow cards), then those FPL players already sitting on three and especially four cautions have a long way to go before they are in the clear.

For ease of reading, only the players highlighted in bold below are the ones walking the disciplinary tightrope.

Currently Banned

Holebas has worryingly reached the “magic” five yellow card mark quicker than he did in 2016/17, when the veteran full-back went on to rack up 14 cautions in just 33 appearances.

The Watford left-back’s five bookings have come from just ten fouls but are illustrative of his tendency to take drastic measures when caught out of position after bombing forward.

As well as Holebas, Watford have another player unavailable for the trip to Molineux.

Christian Kabasele (£4.5m) was dismissed after collecting two yellow cards in the 4-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday and will now serve a one-match suspension in Gameweek 9.

The absence of Kabasele and Holebas could mean promotions off the bench for Adrian Mariappa and Adam Masina (both £4.3m) at centre-half and left-back respectively, though the Hornets are well-stocked for defenders and could even drop midfielders Etienne Capoue (£5.0m) or Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.5m) into the backline.

Cardiff City are currently appealing Joe Ralls‘ (£4.8m) controversial dismissal for serious foul play in the 1-0 defeat to Spurs, but if unsuccessful, Victor Camarasa (£4.5m) could move back into the centre of midfield for the three fixtures in which Ralls is suspended. Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) is nearing a return to fitness and could also step in.

Finally, Wes Morgan (£4.5m) will sit out Leicester City’s next two fixtures after picking up his second red card of the season in the defeat to Everton on Saturday. Jonny Evans (£4.9m) looks to be the likely beneficiary, though Caglar Soyuncu (£5.0m) is an alternative.

On Four Yellow Cards

Three players are on four yellow cards, though only one of them will likely be of any interest to FPL managers. Central midfielders Etienne Capoue (£5.0m) and Harry Arter (£4.9m) are both owned by less than 0.5% of Fantasy bosses, but another caution for either player would result in a ban and be a big blow to their respective clubs following their early-season performances.

Zanka (£4.5m), however, is owned by over 230,000 FPL managers and those Fantasy bosses who are sitting on the Danish centre-half for Huddersfield Town’s forthcoming run of good fixtures between Gameweeks 10 and 15 (one of the best in the league on our Season Ticker) will be hoping the towering stopper can dodge another caution over the coming weeks.

Only one FPL defender has committed more fouls than Zanka this season, however.

On Three Yellow Cards

There are 18 FPL players sat on three cautions which, although still two yellow cards from a suspension, doesn’t leave them with a lot of leeway considering the cut-off date for a one-match suspension is after Boxing Day.

Defenders

There are several high-profile FPL assets among the seven defenders on three yellow cards. Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m), Harry Maguire (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m), owned by 21.1%, 15.7% and 10% of Fantasy bosses at the time of writing, are currently sat on three yellow cards and while that fact is unlikely to prompt mass sales among existing owners, it is something to consider for those FPL managers who are contemplating a move for one of the above trio.

Maguire’s Leicester City indeed top our Season Ticker from Gameweek 10 onwards, while there will be plenty of interest in Liverpool’s watertight defence (five clean sheets in eight matches) and Alexander-Arnold with the Reds’ fixtures turning for the better after the October international break.

Matthew Lowton (£4.8m), Sokratis Papasthopolous (£5.2) and Southampton wing-backs Ryan Bertrand (£4.9m) and Cedric Soares (£4.4m) complete the septet of sinning stoppers.

Midfielders

There are nine midfielders who are just two bookings away from suspension, but there are few Fantasy bosses who will be affected.

Central midfielders Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Philip Billing (£4.5m), Mario Lemina (£5.0m), Dale Stephens (£4.4m), Dan Gosling (£4.9m), Jefferson Lerma (£4.5m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.4m) are amongst the group, with any high ownership (Stephens is the most popular, sitting in 5.4% of squads) likely to be for their budget price tag and suitability as “bench fodder”.

Having racked up eight assists in 2017/18 and proven that he is a threat at direct free-kick situations this season, Xhaka is a cut above the other budget buys listed above.

Any worried owners should be slightly reassured after the elevation to the first team of Lucas Torreira (£4.9m), who has helped unburden the Swiss midfielder from some of his defensive workload. After ten fouls and three yellow cards in the first four league fixtures of the season, Xhaka has committed only four offences and stayed out of the referee’s notebook completely in the last four Gameweeks.

Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m), meanwhile, has lost his place in the West Ham midfield in recent weeks and is only owned by 0.1% of FPL managers in any event.

Matt Ritchie (£5.9m) also has limited appeal from a Fantasy perspective but his Newcastle side are about to embark on an excellent run of fixtures in which they play none of the “big six” in the coming ten Gameweeks.

The Scotland international has a hat-trick of yellow cards to his name, however, and only three midfielders have committed more fouls than him this season.

Forwards

There are only two strikers on three yellow cards but both feature in the top five of most-owned FPL forwards: Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m).

Zaha’s three yellow cards have damaged his score on the Bonus Points System this season as they have all come in fixtures in which he has scored.

With five tough matches coming up (Palace sit bottom of our Season Ticker), Zaha is currently the most-sold forward of Gameweek 9 and it will be interesting to see if he collects a fourth yellow card during this daunting period of matches – that would perhaps deter investors for when the Eagles’ fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 14.

Kane’s booking against Cardiff City on Saturday came in the incident that led to Joe Ralls’ dismissal, while his two previous cautions against Newcastle and Manchester United were for bad fouls.

While his current yellow card count won’t be too big of a concern just yet for existing owners, a fourth yellow card picked up over the next six fixtures would certainly influence the FPL market ahead of Spurs’ excellent run of matches from Gameweek 15-21.

Most Fouls

Below are position-by-position tables of the FPL players who have committed the most fouls in the league this season, highlighting the repeat offenders who are perhaps likeliest to pick up cautions going forward and cost their owners points or hamper their scores on the Bonus Points System.

So Fraser has reported injured for Scotland's match in Israel...
What are you doing with him, will you sell, bench or given what happened last time, will he be playing a part in your starting XI?

Keeping for sure unless Howe rules him out. Should be fine given 2 weeks off. I’d be much more worried if he was playing out there for Scotland as he’s very injury prone.

Why do people say stuff like the WC made Salah tired? Egypt went out in the first round, it's not like he went to the finals you know.

It's the travel, the training and the stress of pretty much carrying that nation's hopes - not to mention all the politics involved with Egypt this summer. It's not just the fact he played a few extra games. That entire time he should have been chilling on holiday after an epic season, and, perhaps more importantly, resting his injured shoulder.

I'd still have expected him to slow down this season even after a rest, but he's definitely even worse off now for not having sat out the World Cup entirely.

So I used 1 of ft’s last night, done Moura > Richarlison but I’m waiting til Friday before the deadline to use my other and possibly a hit.

      Which would you do?

      A. Dilva and Kane > Salah and Arnie
      B. Dilva and Kane > Mane and Lacazette
      C. Knockaert and Kane > Salah and Jiménez

Like a lot of others, I'm umming and ahhing on whether to WC, thoughts:

      Patrício, Speroni
      Trippier, Alonso, Robertson, Doherty, AWB
      Hazard, Mane, Bilva, Sirgurdsson, Dedoncker
      Agüero, Arnie, Mitro

I think I'm just wanting a few players, and don't know if waiting a few weeks for them is a good shout, moves like:

          Trippier >> Mendy
          Bilva >> Richarlison
And one of Mitro or Arnie for Lacazette

I wouldn’t do any of those for a hit right now. Keep them as wish list and monitor over IB then do one or 2 next week if still tempted imo

Believe me I know how tempting it can be especially if a player has unexpectedly disappointed and another is on a run of form but I’m starting to realise hits should be reserved for necessity (I.e injury), bringing in a true differential as a punt or to enable bringing in a “sure thing “ (but pretty sure they don’t exist this season!)

This season he certainly is. You could have exactly the same number of points from somebody who spent last year playing for Norwich City... and for 7m less.

Harsh. But a good point - Patricio has scored 1 point less than Salah, yet cost 8.5m less at the beginning of the season...still, 8 GW's is less than a quarter of the season.

We can't say on a sample of two seasons. It's possible this season could be an extreme (low) and in time he could regress to last year's as the mean

          • 8 Years

That's not regression. Nor is it likely. There's a reason nobody's scored as many pl goals as that before.

It's not a game of chance though, is it. Players will have very different means on account of having very different skills and supporting teams. It's clear Salah is a top, top, player. We really can't attribute much of what happened last year to just good fortune or being some kind of unrepeatable feat of confidence purely on account of his occupying the space under the curve that he did. He's just a great great player. Can we really apply that he will regress towards the general mean purely on account of that?

He doesnt look as fit as he did last season nor the season before last. He was rushed to the world cup and then had a short pre season. Liverpools style of play and training regime is very demanding so it looks like its taken its toll on him as well as Mane and Firmino who also dont look as fit or sharp as last season.

Egypt got knocked out in the group stages. He had just as long as idk mitrovic. Had longer than Messi eg (to whom people were comparing him). I would argue he just doesn't look threatening around the penalty area. Lost his rhythm.

What do you base your norm on? It's not the same for every player and since Salah is having the same underlying stats all I'd say is his conversion is low and that might increase with confidence if he does well in upcoming easier fixtures. Liverpool have had 7 consecutive tough games so I'd have some patience.

Salah's norm is between 1 in 2 and 1 in 3 if you take out last seasons anomaly. I accept that he could easily improve with confidence. Right now he's on course for 15 goals. Maybe he could even get to 20-25 with marked improvement. Repeat of last season? Never again imo

All players have a breakout season which is what transforms them to good ones from the average. His last season in Italy was the one from me. Since then he has played one season in another league. There's not enough sample to judge anything. He started slow last season too. 25-30 goals is achievable. He's getting the chances as well. It's bound to happen sooner or later.

This is it. Regression to the mean Is as it's name suggests based on sample averages and not individuals. Salah is an individual. He looks horribly out of form to me but it's entirely possible he could hit something akin to last year

The bigger concern is not his ability but other factors such as do Liverpool NEED to play him as much and do Liverpool NEED to score three goals to ensure they can beat a team. The answer to both of those is clearly no

I won't be buying him though!

There are just so many concerns piled on top of his loss of mojo that it doesn't make sense to me. If he hits big points in 2/3 upcoming games then I will reassess that. I don't think he will

Agreed. If he starts performing with the regularity of last season you can't ignore him but that seems very unlikely as you say.

      Have 2 Fts & 1.8m

Trippier ➡️ Robertson for free and roll other ft?

      Rest of the defence:
      Alonso • Doherty • Dummet • Awb

Don’t want to upgrade Dummet as I’m saving money for Arnautovic.

      Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

too early to WC KDB in?

I can have something like this.
Rotating between Fraser and one of the strikers. Billing as HUD fixtures turn and he can be a supersub

      Fabianski, (Hamer)
      Alonso, Mendy, Robertson, TAA, (AWB)
      Salah, Haz, KDB, Fraser, (Billing)
      Mitro, Arnie, King

Aguero definitely. The only thing bad about him is early subs but maybe that was because of the foot injury and that should be fine over IB.

It's the reduced minutes that's my biggest concern.
Not ideal to have an 11m striker who plays an average of 60 mins a game and I'd always feel is a risk to caption.

Pep himself said that Kun is managing an injury. If he’s fit after IB he should play more mins. The fact that he’s first choice over Jesus even when injured says something about Pep’s trust in him.

I don’t see any problem with capping him. He’s been getting the points and also has better stats in less mins that almost all other strikers. Going to be a big captain contender in GW9 & 11.

I agree. If Pep likes him so much over Jesus then why risk him in easy games especially when in a winning position and with CL games holding more importance than SOT (h) for example. Classic 60 minute cameo there but might also be enough for a haul.

I wouldn't be selling them, but I can completely understand being on a Wildcard and wanting to free up some cash by trading in a perhaps past his purple-patch Mitro for a cheap Jiminez or maybe even Murray... and I fancy Salah to come good, but selling him on a wildcard frees up cash for all sorts of massive reinforcements elsewhere. It's easy to understand why their prices are dropping if we assume it's wildcarders shuffling their squads rather than just people using their one transfer and giving up on these players.

Defensive cover GW9 to GW15 needed.

I have 2FT and 2.7 million ITB, looking to offload a couple of defensive weak links for the upcoming fixtures.

      Current team is ...

      Fab/Foster
      VVD - Bennett - AWB - Tomkins* - Mee*
      Salah - Maddison - Hazard - Fraser - Richarlison
      Ings - King - Aguero

Definitely don't need double Palace, and Burnley's fixtures are horrendous, so Tomkins and Mee will make way.

12 million available, is it worth doubling up on Liverpool with VVD and Robbo? Alonso?

Could West Ham come good defensively? Am I insane to consider a Newcastle defender?

      Any opinions or suggestions welcomed.

Yes. Clean sheets more reliable, predictable and better value. Chance of attacking returns if forwards do haul

With the way things are going I might have Roberson, TAA, Mendy, Alonso, Doherty as my back five. So I'd say yes.

I'd keep Patricio. Wolves are more solid in defense than Chelsea and he'll get bonus points as well. Vardy Laca is more difficult but Vardy has better upcoming fixtures. Overall I'd go for Pat, Alonso and Vardy but you'll need to make your own decision.

Thoughts on Alexander-Arnold as an option going forward?

I'm a bit worried now that Lovren is back he got rotated at the weekend, but if I go for TAA as a replacement for Shaw I can keep Laporte, otherwise I'm looking at taking out Shaw and Laporte for Robertson and Yedlin/Duffy.

TAA not playing this week was tactical for defensive solidity. Against weaker opponents I'd bet he will play.

Well Lovren almost gave away a penalty and I hardly think this game would be his standard in future games. So if Klopp did this as an one off Gomez/Matip should play with Vvd and Taa or if both play then taa might not. But what do I know, Klopp might go with Lovren.

      RMWCT:

      Patricio - Ryan
      Alonso - Mendy - TAA - Doherty - Bennett
      Hazard - Mane - Richarlison - Fraser - Hojberg
      Aguero - Lacazette - Mitrovic

0.0 ITB would have exact money for this squad. Would like to have Salah but then the rest of the team looks really weak, bought Mane at 9.5 so a lot of value also tied in him. Thoughts where I could improve the squad?

A comment i made, in reference to my successful start to the season, so i thought i would share it, for those who may be struggling or need any pointers.

"well i'm just trying to play safe and steady, i've been picking the easy home game fixture for my (C) out of Salah, Hazard and Aguero, i've been picking my (c) the weekend before and sticking no matter what, not trying to take to many risks or get to many differentials, also this year i'm going with the form and not saying "it won't last" because i have done this many times before"

I think captaining a different player every week except one could be considered a little maverick.

Along with triple Wolves defence and Arsenal attack since GW6, and 4x defenders between 4.0-4.5m, which was far from the 3x premium mould.

Triple Arsenal in GW1-2, double Arsenal in GW3-5.

Sold Aguero for Arnie last week and kept the money in the bank.

Owning Pogba isn't popular around here, yet I bought him on WC and kept him 3 weeks already.

                    Bought Hudson-Odoi on WC.

I don't really care how maverick a team is, but for my point to work, I have to prove that I've made maverick decisions 😆 The point being that you can't generalise what worked for you in the first few GWs to advice for us in the next few GWs or the rest of the season.

I already bought TAA and have a FT remaining.

                          Patrício
                          Jonny, Alexander-Arnold, Alonso, Doherty, Yedlin
                          Ramsey, Özil, Hazard (V)
                          Lacazette (C), Vardy

                          Hamer | Arnautovic, Pogba, Hudson-Odoi

I'll either buy Sterling for Ozil/Pogba or take a hit for Mane and KDB. Probably captain Sterling or Mane/Laca.

You've probably already decided, but if I were you, I'd leave your team as it is, no hit necessary. Agree with Aguero captain, but keep an eye on news over the IB.

Okay cool. My rebuttal, besides what I already said, would be that I don't know what "playing it safe" means to you. It seems like you are simply trying to stop yourself from making crazy moves. You've been taking hits constantly, so it's more of a case of self-control, which doesn't apply to everyone, because others already know not to make crazy tansfers.

"Playing it safe" as regards to ownership is not great advice in my opinion. You can have as many or as little differentials in your team as you like. The safest thing to do is to choose the right players for your team. That is to choose the optimal combination of players as the season progressess that will bring home the most points. Going for a high-owned player is risky if you don't think it will help your team score points as much as a different move, especially if you don't have the space for him in your team and need to take a hit or lose a player you want.

I can agree with this, but i just think there is a limit how far you go with the differentials and different players in general, but the price points and structure is a big thing and i think i have it covered, hits are not good in general no, but most of mine have been positive, but i don't plan to make many more.

If you had Sane in your team wpuld you keep him for the Burnley fixture or just ditch now ? Not sure if another 1 point off the bench is worth the risk although he has potential to get returns even then. Im leaning towards keeping him one more week currently.

Evening EF, if I did sell him I'd probably bring in Mane. However, the caveat there is it would mean no Salah v Cardiff which is an option id like to keep open ideally in case he finds some form against Hudds.

Aye, think I'd be keeping then in that scenario.

What would you do with this team?

      Ederson Steele
      Monreal Trippier Alonso Doherty AWB
      Dilva Maddison Hazard Richarlison Fraser
      Wilson Mitro Kane

      1 FT
      2.0 itb
      1k OR
      WC available

Guess I need some Pool coverage for upcoming gw's?

Dilva to Mane or Trippier to Robbo

Thinking of pulling the WC trigger. Current team is not bad, but I do have some issues with it:

      Patricio - 4.0
      TAA - Tripier - Alonso - Holebas - WBA
      Hazard - Salah - Richarlison - Knockaert - Fraser
      Kane - Ings - Kamara

I'm not convinced by Kane. Playing too deep to justify his price tag. Kamara is a waste of space - would rather have a bench player who plays. Want Sterling. Not convinced by Salah (but equally think I should keep him for the next couple given I've kept him thus far). Holebas red card. Want Mendy.

If I were to do it, I'm looking at something like this:

      Patricio - 4.0
      Alonso - Mendy - Robbertson - Doherty - WBA
      Sterling - Hazard - Richarlison - Fraser - Hojberg
      Lacazette - Firmino- Wilson

Any pearls of wisdom / advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

I like your team a lot and based on past experience I would not be at all surprised if Firmino just comes from a relatively quiet period and goes mental and ends up being the best attacking option.

My only advice is think about what you plan to do when the fixtures turn for Fraser. If you decided to upscale him significantly then you might be looking at 3 transfers because of the way money is spread in your Frontline. Also apart from Vardy there are few natural replacements for Firm/Laca.

That said, I don't want to dissued you from it because it's a refreshing team

PS. I think sterling over a Liverpool mid could be a masterstroke. He's racking up the points, getting the minutes, what's not to love. City are fixture proof (except perhaps Liverpool!)

put this in another article but no reply. Hopefully somebody will here
      wc team
      fab/hamer
      Alonso TAA Doherty Jonny BWA
      Frazer Haz Rich Mane KDB
      Arnie Jimenez Aguero

Will prolly play 3-5-2 most weeks. Have 0.6mil left. Had to take trip out for doherty to make funds, plus he looks like will keep bring points.
      Anyone see anything wrong?

I would recommend 4-4-2 with Jonny being upgraded to Robbo or Mendy or hell I like Maguire, and Jimenez downgraded to Kamara or some such. Would also switch AWB to a WHM defender as they rotate nicelt with Doherty.

cheers for input. Still got trip in team at min. Although not sure spurs great at min. Had Mendy in before injured might.go back to him but not sure having three value city players in is wise. Not fond of none playing ppl in like kamara a risk is sonething.goes wrong. Anybody have some input?

KDB seems risky to me. I'd put someone else in but jeep the money to bring him in as soon as he's playing 90mins

I have 2 FT's and planning on doing some minor surgery to my team, which differential players should I be looking at to steal a march in my ML after the IB?

I also have 2 ft and I’m looking at
Kane, Son, Tomkins to Laca Mane Mendy

Mendy v Burnley seems important to own this Gameweek
