Richard Clarke is among an elite core of managers who have topped our Hall of Fame, which is based on the career achievements of those in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues.

He achieved this momentous feat just last month and after since slipping to 11th spot he is keen to once again return to the summit and secure his ambition of being number one when the season ends.

In the latest in our Meet the Manager video series he reveals how he plans to see off the competition and discusses the strategies that have earned him such incredible success over his 12 previous campaigns.

With seven top 10,000 finishes, including last season’s 263rd and a 303rd rank in 2011/13, he is a competitor that cannot be underestimated. In fact, he is yet to have a poor season, with 2015/16’s end rank of 32,547th his ‘worst’ to date.

Richard (FPL team link here) discusses the importance of keeping tabs on elite managers and the season ticker. He also reveals how analysing probability can ensure managers make their own luck.

This season’s trends are also discussed, as he reveals which heavy hitter he is looking to shun on his upcoming Wildcard and how the tried and tested ‘eye-test’ let him down badly last weekend.

The chat with Richard is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips, can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here. Last week’s episode, featuring Will Thomas, is available here.

    Kane Lamela > Salah 6.2 (-4)

Would you risk Kane > King or Wilson (6.3) on the assumption Salah will drop before GW9 (and any Lamela drop) or too risky? May force an unnecessary additional hit/WC...

Jímenez is my other preferred option.

    Rui Patricio
    Robertson Alonso Mendy
    ____ Hazard Fraser Kenedy/H.Costa
    Aguero Mitrovic ____

    (Foster Kenedy/H.Costa AWB Pereira)

Safer to get Jimi. Not explosive, but cheap and ticking along nicely.

Worst case you could go for Mane instead of Salah and use the money ITB for the week after?

Wouldn't assume Salah will drop, but looks fine otherwise (Wilson).

Got my eyes on Kenedy as well. I dont know if Id be rushing Kane out though. Bou’s fixtures arent that great

    How is she looking?

    Patricio
    Mendy Alonso TAA Robbo
    Rich Haz Salah KDB
    Arnie Mitro

    Fodder Jimenez Bennett Westwood

    On my WC
Too much money at the back? No premium forward will hinder future flexibility on transfers? Be interested to get your thoughts...

Steady returns Jimenez on the bench against that Watford defence?

Downgrade a defender, upgrade your fodder.

I like it, but maybe a touch too early for KDB? Jimenez is a good first sub though (and Bennett a good second sub). With all the value available in MF this year in mid, you could still get a big hitter upfront in 2 moves so looks good.

yeah maybe too early for KDB but feel he might be worth the risk as at 9.7 he is under priced. Lets see if Pep says anything before the next GW

I like the KDB idea but I think I’d wait on that until we know he’s starting. Maybe put someone else in and save the cash, especially if youre on WC and can change up to deadline

yeah true, maybe Maddison or Fraser as a place holder and keep cash.

Are Arnie and Mitro the best mid-range strikers? Or should Wilson be in that conversation

    Current team:

    Hart (Hamer)
    Alonso Robertson Mendy Trippier (Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah Hazard Maddison Richarlison Fraser
    Aguero (Kamara, Quaner)
    1.2 ITB

Thinking of doing Hart>Patricio, Wan-Bissaka>Alexander-Arnold which would have been an easy move prior to his benching against City and Gomez+Lovren doing well. Good move, or are there any other moves I should think about?

good moves, with the beefy defense you can take the slight risk on TAA

Looks ok, assuming you're happy with 2 dead fwds (AWB as only bench option during bad fixture run in case of rotation)

      1. ★Kuntheman★

Yeah part of the reason for this move is to upgrade AWB as a bench option. Having a cheap forward could be a good move though!

Yeah I didn't read your question properly (upgrading AWB). Don't personally like that setup but imagine it's going ok so far.

24k rank, so much better than I thought. 4-5-1(occasionally 5-4-1) ticking along very well.

Hi how are you mate? With TAA in what formation will you used? With Fraser fixtures, maybe Fraser, Kamara -> 4.4 mid, Arnie

Doing well mate, how about you? Would rotate TAA with Fraser and Richarlison’s bad fixtures. I like your idea too though, dropping Fraser hurts because I had him before he was cool so I’m very emotionally attached to him 😉

You need to address your forwards more so than anywhere else. 2 effectively non playing forwards is to much. Whilst you have two much money in defence, I'd lose Mendy or Trippier to Doherty, and use your free morning to upgrade quaner of Kamara. Not sure how much money you'd have so can't really say who to upgrade to.

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 10 Years

Tbh 4-5-1 and 5-4-1 has worked great so far, but I see your point. Reluctant to drop any of the four I’m currently starting especially because Wolves fixtures aren’t exactly great, I’m kinda bringing in Patricio only because his save counter is gonna be insane and in the case of a CS he’s going to haul. I’ve got 1.2 ITB so dropping Trippier to Doherty would give me 2.6, 0.1 spent on Patricio and then 2.5 (up to 6.9 FWD) for a Kamara/Quaner upgrade

        1. Holteenderinthesky
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 9 months ago

I feel you limit your team selection by having 2 non playing attackers, your always going to have to play 4 at the back. In my opinion you Should always have 7 attacking players that actually play, so you have room to swap formations around. Murray could be a decent pick with their fixtures coming up. Also on penalties. If the wolves fixtures put you off slightly at the back, once again look at Brighton, Duffy. Or even West Ham defenders, seem to be playing better and fixtures are improving.

You also have an aguero is who is carrying a knock. So you basically have 3 forwards who you'd be Lucky to get more than 60 mins between them each week. Always that chance aguero gets benched as well. Leaving you with 10 players

            1. ★Kuntheman★

I could do Trippier>Doherty, Quaner>Arnie. Would mean I can’t get Patricio though, unless Speroni drops to 3.9.

Seems a good move to me. If you are bring Doherty in you don't need Patricio as well. I would seriously look at Duffy though if you don't fancy a wolves defender.

In the top 4k, was looking pretty in the top 1500 until Sunday. 2 FT 2.4ITB
    Hart, Bettinelli
    Alonso, TAA, Trippier, Doherty, WB
    Hazard, Richarlson, Fraser, Knockhaert, Ward
    Aguero, Kane, Mitro.

I already know I'm dropping Kane and bringing Salah back in this week.

But who do I take out for Salah?
And who do I Bring in for Kane?

    Currently thinking
    Fraser>Salah
    Kane>Arnie

It's more the fact I have to get Salah back in for the next two gameweeks so one of them has to go. Richarlson upfront, and Hazard definitely stay. Torn between Fraser and Knockhaert, Could go Knockhaert to Salah, Kane to Murray

Brought him in on my Wildcard a couple of weeks back. For the upcoming fixtures so ye slightly reluctant to lose him. I Could do a -4 to effectively bring in Lacazette with Salah.
            Trippier>4.3
            Fraser>Salah
            Kane>Lacazette

    Question for Richard Clarke/Corsano Utd.

Why did you pick Speroni as your 2nd keeper. Did you hope that he would be in dead teams and that would hold his value? I saw it the other way and that casuals would pick him and then casuals would move him on not using a wildcard transfer.

Do you plan to ship him out before he hits 3.9 or are you just planning a single keeper all season?

Speroni being the first keeper to drop to 3.9 was pretty obvious to me.

StartDod and bench Jimenez? Against usual rule of thumb of if in doubt start more attacking, but (i) Doh on fire and Wolves CS pretty likely (implied probability over 50%) (ii) Jimenez haul chance is minimal

It's maybe too much Everton, although he's an ideal swop for Moura. I'm guessing i won't usually have an issue with so many defenders having good fixtures.

Laca is doing very well, but Arsenal's form has been incredibly lucky, and completely unsustainable:

          https://statsbomb.com/2018/10/arsenal-arent-this-good-nor-are-dortmund-heres-why/

With the fixtures about to take a turn for the worse, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lacazette's and Arsenal's form as a whole suffer for at least a few weeks...

              No problem buddy 🙂

Yeah by GW15 Arsenal should have had time to develop a little more, they then start a nice run of 7 fixtures in GW16.

At the moment Emery is clearly still trying players out, different options in different positions etc. The results have been fantastic so far but as far as I'm concened its a house built on sand. The fact that Fulham had a higher expected goals count than Arsenal and got hammerred 5-1 shows was a freakish result that was! Watford and Everton also had higher xG than Arsenal in the 2 preceding fixtures aswell, and both somehow lost 2-0.

Lacazette is such a wonderful pure striker though. If you wanted to find an individual striker who might sustain the apparently unsustainable, he'd be one of my first choices

I did the stupid move of Aguero out for Kane. I'm very tempted to get Vardy in, instead of Aguero then get Sterling/KDB. Vardy loves scoring against the top 6 teams so i'm not really worried about him blanking against Arsenal

Don't you have a hunch those extra Kane minutes will soon start translating to points though. My main concern would be does pep start giving Kun more minutes. While he doesn't I see no reason to panic

My stance on Kane hasn’t changed, and to be honest I think his card was marked last year. Scoring 30 goals & still not breaking 220 points was a massive red flag that his FPL appeal is diminished. If he was 11.0 he’d be selectable... at 12.5 he’s just not imo.

It’s not that he’s not a great player, and it’s not that he won’t score goals & get points, it’s just other players offer better value & allow a better team (imo)

Who knows though, maybe he’ll hattrick v West Ham.

was fixed on salah but current form is making me think over it , Kun's reduced minutes are also not helping meanwhile bournemouth can be beast on their day against a hapless SOU side can be good (but not trusting this too much)

I'd do Vardy. Interesting thread higher up this page on relative merits.

Vardy doesnt pass the eye test as well but better fixtures. Always scores vs Arsenal.

Lacazette could/should score in next two but then he faces the best defences (Pool then Wolves).

I have Vardy, he didnt look great vs Everton so I was considerin getting Laca instead... but probably shouldnt.
