Fantasy Premier League Question Time is back following the return of top flight football in Gameweek 9.

As ever, the FPL community is brimming with questions, which we have put to our latest panel of pundits.

Read on to find out what they think about the best way to cover Liverpool’s defence, whether it’s time to sell Marcos Alonso and how to build the most effective forward line.

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL General – aka Mark McGettigan, who has three finishes inside the top 400 in the last four seasons and who has a huge following on Twitter. Mark has also appeared on the official FPL Show this season.

Who Got the Assist? – Tom and Nick run one of Twitter’s most active Fantasy accounts and run their very own blog, also producing an excellent regular podcast.

Holly Shand – aka FPL Holly, founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community Twitter account and website and another who has appeared on the official FPL Show in recent months.

Question 1 – General

Is Robertson the only Liverpool defender worth investing in? Should we avoid all others?

“The Liverpool defence is a bit of a minefield right now. Alexander-Arnold, Gomez and Lovren are competing for two places, not to forget Joel Matip as well.

“That’s enough for me to avoid these players in FPL.

“I’ve got Robertson as he’s the safe bet. Van Dijk looks secure as well if you are willing to fork out £5.9m for a centre-back who has zero attacking returns this season.

“If I was going for a Liverpool defensive double-up, it would be the Scottish Roberto Carlos and goalkeeper Alisson.”

Question 2 – Who Got the Assist?

With Alonso’s points drying up and Mendy proving again threatening, should we make the switch now? Or because Chelsea have easier fixtures comparing to City in the next three should we wait after GW 12 to make the change?

“I can see why a lot of people are eyeing the price of Alonso and thinking he could function as a cash cow.

“As we got a hint of with his headed goal this week, you’ve now also got his team mate Rudiger second for goal attempts, just three behind the Spaniard.

“To his credit, Alonso is still getting in the right positions to register attacking returns.

“But the crucial element for me is his ownership. Nearly 50% of managers have him in their squads.

“Chelsea have Burnley Crystal Palace and Everton before the next international break, which on paper is better than what City have.

“Anything in those winnable games and it’s a bona fide rank killer. Other managers may be braver, but I’m not selling until injury forces my hand.”

Question 3 – Holly

Is it too risky to go with three cheaper strikers with none of the big strikers in good form (aside from Aguero) or should team structure still take priority?

“Aguero, Aubameyang and Lacazette are leading the way for premium strikers, and I expect that trend to continue.

“For this reason, I’d say you need at least one expensive striker or maybe even two, with Aguero and Lacazette the pick of the options.

“Bournemouth have provided great value in the cheap striker slot, but as their schedule stiffens, a move for Arnautovic might be wise.

“Mitrovic, Jimenez and Ings are all lacking consistency right now.”

Question 4 – General

While I’m looking to protect my overall rank somewhat. I’m also looking for a differential or two. Who does the panel see making a difference, away from the norm over the next three Gameweeks?

“I’ve had a look at my Watchlist and picked out three differentials who I think could score well over the next three Gameweeks.

“Ben Chilwell (0.8% ownership) impressed me on Monday night against Arsenal. He picked up his first assist of the season, bombing forward from left back for Leicester. He faces West Ham (h), Cardiff (a) and Burnley (h) next.

“Newcastle need to turn things around quickly after a very poor start to the season. Their fixtures are great between now and Boxing Day (they don’t face any of the ‘Big Six’ until then) which could see an upturn in form. Kenedy (1.2% ownership) is the one I’m interested in.

“Jamie Vardy (4.9%) was very quiet against Arsenal, possibly due to illness. Interest in him will be low after two blanks but I can see him back amongst the goals over the next three Gameweeks.”

Question 5 – Holly

Do you view the Wolves defeat as a reality check or an anomaly against a Watford side with a point to prove? How should that affect our utilisation of our Wolves defensive assets over the tricky run of fixtures in the coming Gameweeks?

“Those managers who jumped on the Wolves defence have been fortunate so far, as defensive stability coincided with great fixtures.

“According to expected goals conceded, Wolves are third best in the league, behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

“We must remember that they are a promoted team though.

“Their defence still contains value options, with Rui Patricio a set and forget keeper option, who should do well for save points over the difficult period.

“Doherty is still a great third or fourth defender and Bennett a great bench filler with his 4.2m price.

“It might be time to abandon a starting double or triple up, but still worth carrying one or two in your squad long-term.

“It’s these players that can enable us to afford the popular premium options of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso.”

Surely, Dilva will start Monday against Spurs, even though he played 90 last night and 74 min on Sat. Or will he get dropped for KDB? Bilva or Dilva dropped? How are we thinking City will lineup? What does Pep have up his sleeve this time?

    Ederson
    Walker Stones LaPorte Mendy
    KDB Fernandinho Dilva
    Mahrez Kun Sterling

He'll want plenty of pace to slice through spuds, maybe Sane in for Mahrez and swap Sterling to the right

I think the only thing near certain with that midfield is that KDB will keeping starting and will be getting more than 60-65 as the weeks by. That means someone's else is losing out in mid as if it was not bad enough already. Minefield I could be wrong on KDB too.

I have decided the safest way to triple up City for the season is Ederson Mendy and KDB and even this is risky so trying to have a decent bench.

Silva is playing really well at the moment. Gundogan is out. It would surprise me if he didn't start vs Spurs.

That said I will probably make the switch to Mane or Salah myself.

Non owner here and I think The tougher the game the more likely Dilva will start, your starting team looks the most likely although I think Bilva will start over Mahrez but could easily be Sane as well as not much between the form of the 3 at the moment.

What is this sudden obsession with kdb? Why would you take out the city forward for a deep lying playmaker? If anything I'd be more interested in dilva than kdb in any case plays more advanced

Over the next few weeks this will happen a few times as a want to keep Fraser.
When Fraser has a really bad fixture would you play Dale Stephens with a good fixture ahead of him?
Stephens gives 2 or 3 points.
Fraser probably 2 points but at least attacking potential.

I had to let fraser go in wc. Only reason i kept him, was to keep team value up. I went for Richarlison and Maddison. So there were no room left for him. I have Sterling and Hazard to.

Which premium asset would you downgrade for a better balanced team? (From next week onwards)

    Salah
    Hazard
    Aguero

Not doubting their quality but looks like I will captain Salah for only 1-2 games between GW11-20 (FUL and NEW) whereas other 2 looks captainable for 3-4 games. 😮

Keeping all 3 of them is obviously an option but looking at alternatives for overall decent team.

Having had a terrible gw (29 minus 2 hits = 21), I went through the "I don't care" phase, so now try to calm down and actually care about the team.
I feel like saving the FT this week and playing this way:

    Patricio (bha)
Alonso (bur) , Robertson (CDF) , Chilwell (WHU)
    Hazard(V) (bur) , Mane(C) (CDF) , Maddison (WHU) , Fraser (ful)

Which of KDB and Mane would be your priority to own right now?

1 of them will be coming this GW. Have the WC still and certainly keen on KDB in a few weeks either way.

Right now, I'd say Manè. Higher chance of bumper hauls in the short run with two very nice home fixtures against Cardiff & Fulham in the next three.

I think we need to see how Pep uses KDB in the next 2-3 gwks. Surely he was as close to nailed as possible last season, but with Mahrez's addition and Bilva's increased involvement, even KDB may be a rotation risk.
      Mane for now.

Meanwhile in Dreamteam had a good week (thanks Auba!) which saw me creap into the top 2 in our League and 605 overall. I've never been this high up so just gonna see how this all plays out.

Would still urge you to use a different source than just converting betfairs odds to percentages. Using betbrain would make it both simpler and more accurate. According to the market, these are the "truest percentages".

      Pool: 57%
      CFC: 51%
      Watford: 45%
      Soton: 40%
      United: 39%

      LCFC: 35%
      City: 31%
      Brighton: 31%
      Arsenal: 31%
      Newcastle: 27%
      Wham: 25%
      Bournemouth: 23%
      Huddersfield: 22%
      Fulham 21%
      Everton: 19%
      Palace: 18%
      Spurs: 17%
      Burnley: 14%

When you see how he is calculating his "accuracy", I don't think being precise is something he is overly worried about.

It might not be necessary to be accurate for the HT to serve its purpose (showing who the big favs and dogs are / listing whos most likely to keep cleans).

My reply is not about putting G-whizz down for not being accurate. These HT's are cherished by many and rightfully so. The only thing I want to point out is that they could be more accurate, and it wouldnt be more work, it would actually be less.

Totally agree - think it would just be nice for the "accuracy" figures he gives to be compared fairly against the "accuracy" of other measures (e.g. bookies odds, spread markets etc), otherwise it really is just a number.

              Yup!

As it stands its just an "indicative list". To be a list showing probability he needs to use other sources of information.

          https://www.betbrain.com/football/england/premier-league/liverpool-v-cardiff-city-fc/#/team-clean-sheet/ordinary-time/

Have a look at that link.
          - After finding a match you can click on the "all markets"-tab. This gives yo the oppurtunity to look at the oddds for various bets on a match.
          - in the link I've selected "team clean sheets". This allows me to see what the bookies offer for "YES" and "NO". This gives betbrain the data it needs to convert the "margins" and odds in to probability.
          - The probability is shown with numbers displayet as percentages at the bottom of the page.
          - If i want to see Cardiff's odds, I can simply click where it says "Liverpool (7 bookies)" and select Cardiff instead. If I want to see other teams odds, ill search for them in the searchbar and repeat the same process there.

          - keep in mind that the odds will shift closer to matchday. The odds and percentages will be better indicators of likelyhood after pressers, because new information arrives, wihich then influence bettors choices and therefore also the odds.

With those two it's fairly "simple" to opt for Mendy because his attacking promise far outweighs the discrepancy between a city-cs and a wolves-cs.

Mendy v doherty though..... Now that's a tough one.

Well.... They've only kept a clean away 4 times last season and this season combined.

This doesnt necessarily prove anything, but that 4/23 (17%). So theyre about twice as likely to keep a clean this week, compared to how often theyve actually kept a clean away the last 2 years.

    Ederson, Hamer
    Mendy, Robertson, Duffy, Tomkins, Wan-Bis
    Haz, Maddison, Rich, Knockaert, Gendouzi

I am 0.3m short for Kane & Knockaert to Arnie and Salah (2ft)

    Do I:

    A) look at downgrading Rich instwad of Knockaert?
    B) downgrade Ederson for Ryan/Patricio/Fab (-4)
    C) get King instead of Arnie

I'm on B currently but it goes against my grain to take a hit for a keeper!
