Richarlison adapts to new role as back-three looms at Everton

Richarlison is starting to find his feet as the centre-forward at Everton, scoring a brace in Gameweek 11.

Meanwhile, there may be defensive changes afoot for the Toffess as Yerry Mina finally comes into contention for a place in the team.

In this latest Scout Notes article we’ve looked at the Fantasy Premier League talking points from Everton’s 3-1 win over Brighton.

Everton 3-1 Brighton

Goals: Richarlison x2 (£6.8m), Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) | Lewis Dunk (£4.4m)

Assists: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) | Solly March (£5.0m)

Richarlison (£6.8m) continued to make a mockery of suggestions that he cannot play as a centre-forward with an excellent display on Saturday. The FPL midfielder scored a brace in a 3-1 win over Brighton, taking his returns in games played up front to four in four (three goals and one assist). In those matches, Richarlison has averaged 7.5 FPL points compared to 7.00 in four appearances of 85 minutes or more on the wing (excludes his Gameweek 3 sending off). So he is now matching his previous Fantasy appeal in his new role, after struggling to adapt to it initially.

The former Watford attacker also showed good resilience on Saturday afternoon as he came through a first-half injury scare to play a starring role at Goodison Park. In stretching to a recover a heavy touch Richarlison rolled his ankle and required a lengthy spell of treatment. He had to hobble to the touchline before coming back on and moved gingerly for a few minutes afterwards. However, he soon got back into his stride and went on to score twice. Such determination to continue, when he could have potentially come off with the knock, will be almost as pleasing to his 25.6% ownership as his two goals.

“It was no surprise to me that Richarlison carried on but it shows you his resilience. That is Richarlison. He never gives up, he’s always ready to play, to fight and to achieve and to give good things for us on the pitch.” – Marco Silva

After receiving much attention at the expense of Richarlison last week, Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m) came out of the win with just an assist to his name. However, Gameweek 11 was the first in which Richarlison outscored the Icelandic international since Gameweek 2. It is possible that Sigurdsson may still outscore the Brazilian in the coming weeks. Richarlison only had one more shot than the former Swansea man against Brighton, who registered double the key passes.

The chief creator on the day was left-back Lucas Digne (£4.8m) who fashioned more chances than any other player. Those with access to the Fantasy Football Scout members area will also find his average position interesting given how advanced it was. That said, he was unable to convert any of that promise into FPL returns and justify his place in the Gameweek 11 Scout Picks.

The stand-out defender in the fixture was Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) who scored Everton’s second goal for a 10-point haul. It was the first time he had found the net in 22 months.

Yerry Mina‘s (£5.4m) substitute appearance, his first since signing in the summer, could signal a defensive change at Everton. As usual, Marco Silva lined the Toffees up against Brighton with Digne and Coleman flanking Michael Keane (£4.9m) and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) for the third match in a row, but Mina’s introduction triggered something of a re-shuffle for the final minutes. The full-backs were pushed higher up the pitch with the centre-halves forming a three-man defence; Zouma on the left, Mina in the middle and Keane on the right. With the Colombian international, scorer of that stoppage time World Cup knockout goal against England, struggling with a foot injury up until this point, Silva has been unable to use a back three until now.

“It is one possibility. Unfortunately, I did not have enough central defenders during pre-season to prepare the team more because it is a formation I have used many, many times before and is a formation I like. It is one formation we are ready to use, especially with the full-backs in our squad and the players we have in our attack as well. It is one possibility we have in our squad and when we prepare our squad we will play three at the back if we need to.” – Marco Silva

Everton definitely will not be able to use a three-man defence when they travel to face Chelsea next week as Zouma is ineligible to face his parent club. That should mean that Mina gets his first start of the campaign and Silva clearly expects a lot from him.

“It was a good moment for him to feel the Premier League for the first time and for him to feel our blue shirt for the first time as well. Not just because it is possible he will play the next match but I just felt they could create some problems for us from set-pieces and they were playing with two up front. So I thought it was a good moment for him to make his debut in the Premier League. We fought to sign him because we know how he can help us and be a good player in our squad. Of course, everyone was anxious to see him. He wants, really, to play and he is working hard to play in our squad but I didn’t see him being anxious. He can see how well the other two are doing. He is hungry to play in our squad and when he gets the chance I know he will perform well.” – Marco Silva

Brighton’s run of three consecutive clean sheets predictably came to an end at Goodison Park. It was a result that will have reinforced the view of some Fantasy managers that the Seagulls’ assets are of more use when they play at home. This was their third defeat in five away matches as their very high goal attempts in the box conceded figure finally took its toll on their defensive assets.

A defensive error from Lewis Dunk (£4.4m) allowed Richarlison to take advantage and score the opening goal. That said, he is unlikely to lose his place over the incident, especially considering he scored the equaliser in the second half.

“He’s a centre-half. He made an error. It’s not the first time that he has made one and it won’t be the last. There won’t be any potential England centre-halves that haven’t made mistakes and won’t continue to make mistakes. It’s part and parcel of the job. We have to look at how he has been for us and he has been really excellent so he’ll be fine.” – Chris Hughton

Glenn Murray (£6.6m) was signed by over 135,000 managers having scored two goals in three matches prior to Gameweek 11, but he, perhaps predictably, blanked away from home once again. He has scored just one goal in six matches on the road in 2018/19, and that was from the penalty spot against Southampton. It will be interesting to see how his ownership fluctuates over the next six Gameweeks as their more favourable opponents will all be met on their respective home patches. Meanwhile, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Chelsea are the next three visitors to the Amex Stadium.

Manager Chris Hughton does not believe too much should be read into Brighton’s latest away day loss. He explained that a trip to Everton was always going to be difficult for a side like his. In spite of that, he and several players were disappointed with the manner of the defeat.

“Probably what will hit home to me is in our last four games we’ve got three wins and one loss. That will be important because we are Brighton in our second season in the Premier League playing against a team that will be pushing top six this season. They’ve spent big money, the likes of Walcott, Richarlison. These are players that have cost big money. Digne for a full-back was big money. You have to accept that, they’ve got good players. You have to be perhaps at your best to get something away from home against the likes of these and we weren’t.” – Chris Hughton

“For the majority of the game, we were second best. Duals, we didn’t keep the ball well enough, challenges. There is no doubt they have got quality and good technical players and work hard for one another. But the onus is on us. We have had plenty of experiences to know what it takes to come to places like this and get results. I didn’t think we stuck to our level for as long as was needed to take something from this match.” – Mat Ryan

“They didn’t have to work hard for their goals. They are good here. A couple of individual mistakes, which happens. It is a bad day at the office. We didn’t play in the second half, they dominated the game and fully deserved it. They are going places.” – Shane Duffy

It was another match in which Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) did not feature from the start. He has now gone three Gameweeks in a row without being named on the team-sheet and he has come on as a substitute only in the last two. Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.7m) started all three of those matches in the Frenchman’s place at right midfield but came off with a hamstring complaint against Everton.

“I felt a kind of cramp in my hamstring. We will try it tomorrow. This was one of the (fastest) games (in the Premier League).” – Alireza Jahanbakhsh

With Knockaert already on for Jose Izquierdo (£5.9m), Striker Florin Andone (£5.0m) was the Iranian’s replacement, registering his first minutes since arriving in the summer. The new signing played on the right-wing, not his primary position, but the suggestion is that he could make more appearances in the future.

“(Andone) was very good. It was very difficult for him to come on and he had to play wide on the right because Ali was injured. I think he was at a really high level. He is a very good player and he is going to bring us a lot.” – Bruno

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Zouma, Keane, Coleman; Gueye, André Gomes; Bernard (Lookman 68′), Sigurdsson (Mina 90′), Walcott (Calvert-Lewin 85′); Richarlison.

Brighton XI (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Bong, Dunk, Duffy, Bruno; Izquierdo (Knockaert 63′), Kayal (Andone 78′), Stephens, Jahanbakhsh; March (Bissouma 70′); Murray.

thoughts on kane + guendouzi > salah + success (-8), already done mitro > arnie saturday night (ft)

success would be first on the bench and the front 7 would look like this

        salah(c) - mane - sterling - fraser - barkley
        arnie - vardy

the fear of no salah is distinctly greater than the fear of a 8 point hit for me lol

I wouldn't do it unless I was bringing forward future transfers that I couldn't otherwise do without hits anyway. What if he doesn't play or gets injured. Plus there's an international break after the game which also comes with risk of injury. Mane could match salah as well

I want a Liverpool attack for the Fulham game and have three choices (2.8 itb)

    A Sterling for Salah
    B Hazard for Salah
C David Luiz, Hojbjerg and Mitrovic for Chilwell, Mane and Success (-4 points)

I would like Salah rather than Mane but don't really want to lose Hazard or Sterling. So which would you go for?

PL to important and Red Star are rubbish.....I can see LFC not playing Mane, Salah, Fiminio. Robertson, and VVD. They have enough fringe players such as Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Fabinio, Milner and Sturridge to field a defensive team against Red Star and sneak a win......

    Fabianski/Patricio

Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Bennett, Wan Bisaka

    Aguero, Arnautovic, Jiminez.

It depends on the element of risk. Ideally the transfers you make should serve you over a long period of time. That's when the point hits are really worth it. Otherwise, you'd need a big points haul to cover up the points lost which isn't easy.

Sterling's 2 goals and 2 assists gave him 21 points this week, taking his season totals to 6 goals and 5 assists from 9 starts in 11 gameweeks. Only 2 players have scored more points so far this season (The Chelsea duo Hazard and Alonso). So is it time for his small 7.6% TSB to increase, and if so, who goes?

Sterling seems to be the closest to nailed out of the City wide men, a position that has been returning a good amount of points for whoever plays there. Forking out 11.1m for a midfielder that might not play when you captain him has put off a lot of people until now, but is the risk now worth it?

The current 4 premium players that are well owned on FFS seems to be Salah, Aguero, Hazard and Mane. So which of these makes way if you bring in Sterling?

Aguero or Mane being sacrificed for Sterling would probably require 2 transfers, as would Hazard --> Sterling for many, but Salah to Sterling could be done in one.

Replacing Aguero with a mid priced forward such as Arnie and bringing in Sterling in the middle seems a sensible idea. Sterling has matched or outscored Aguero every time he has played, but Aguero has the capability to go off and score 4, which would demolish ORs with him being in over 50% of teams. Plus, Aguero has become a reliable captain option, especially in his home games, now that he's seemingly quashed heavy rotation worries with Jesus.

Replacing a Liverpool mid could work, with Salah --> Sterling working as a straight swap that would free up cash as well. However, despite a poor performance last time out and some disappointing returns in past weeks, they do have some excellent fixtures plus whether Salah and Mane are essential changes by the week. It would certainly be 'brave' to drop one of these two for Sterling this week. Those with just Salah might try to bring in Mane to their midfield, meaning they'd still have to make a couple transfers, but whether Mane can match Salah is a whole other question!

Hazard could also be moved out, but has had some fantastic returns until a back injury limited his performances and gametime. Despite some reasonably tricky fixtures in his next 5, it seems harsh to drop him now given he's returning from injury.

Will you be bringing in Sterling (if you don't have him already) and will you be doing it now or waiting a week or two?

How does Sterling come into these teams already loaded with premium players?

Personally, I don't think I'll be getting Sterling in, even though the more I think about it the more I like him.

Salah + Haz + Aguero for me with 1 FT, I think any move I make would likely require a hit, besides Sterling has United next. Will I bring him in down the line? Perhaps. I still have a WC available which opens up a few more options, but frankly I'm feeling a bit cautious with my transfers currently.

I've got the same 3 big hitters, seriously considering a WC to fit Sterling in next week after the United game. Aguero most likely to make way I feel with a switch to probably playing 3-5-2/4-4-2.

Have moved to a 3-5-2 with Wilson and Arnie up top, Salah Hazard, Mane, Richalrison and Fraser in midfield and RAM at the back. Have enough money ITB to go from Mane to Sterling in a week or two. See a lot of points in defense and midfield this year and the budget forwards are doing really well this you to enable it.

it doesn't work this week for the template team. dropping salah or mane pre-Fulham is a rank killer.
some folks also looking at losing Maddison pre Burnley to make it work as well which again I think is bad idea he is due a score

can see it being a common move after this week though

Yeah agree with most. Salah and Mane looking great picks this week, but afterwards we might see Sterling step into the spotlight more.

I understand people getting frustrated with Madds, has been very disappointing for owners. Leicester need to start finishing off some of the chances he's creating!

I have been looking at ways to keep the big 3 and get Sterling in. I am not sure it is possible. I could lose Salah to mane and go with the following...

        Ryan
        Robertson - Mendy - Alonso
        Sterling - Hazard - Mane - Fraser
        Jimenez - Aguero - Arnie

        Button - Doc - AWB - 4.3m

          Sterling - Hazard - Salah

            Sterling Hazard Mane
            AA
with Jimmy & Brooks rotating in the final spot

lots of rotational options and if a big player gets rested its not like an awful option will be coming off the bench
still not making any moves this week, salah + maddy should score well in wk12

I honestly dont know if and when I will get Sterling. Those no-shows vs poir opposition at home are annoying.

      Considering a front 8 of -
Hazard, Sterling, Mané, Martial, Richarlison, Arnautovic, Morata (to become Lacazette once ARS schedule gets better, and after CHE v FUL). But that would require a few hits, and getting rid of Aguero AND Salah. Unsure.

I am debating a similar lineup but 1) I have a wildcard 2) I'd go straight for Lacazette as Arsenal are playing well and I think he could score against anybody and 3) I do not like Aguero's ownership being so high. He just needs a couple of big games and your overall rank will be down the toilet

I got him in for Burnley at home when he got 0 mins... Figured he is too expensive to miss some easy home games (as he missed HUD at home too). Gone for a Pool mid, Hazard, Aguero + RAM instead.

There may come a point when Salah or Hazard to Sterling is a good option, but it isn’t now.

Salah is looking back to great form with some excellent fixtures, and Hazard’s goal involvement for Chelsea makes him near-essential (Chelsea also have Fulham at home coming up)

Plus, you never really know if sterling might miss a game. Mahrez & Sane are both in good form and could replace him, if City have say a midweek CL game.

Jesus isn’t showing any form at all, offering little in his recent time on the pitch (even in 90 mins against Fulham!)

So Aguero appears more currently more nailed than sterling & on penalties. As good as sterling is, it’s just not the right time.

Looking for a WC attack of Mane, Hazard, Richarlison, Sterling, Kun, Wilson, Arnie

But would have to get rid of RAM for Laporte, DLuiz, Balbuena at the back but would be able to upgrade keeper to Alisson.

Aiming to get him in VS Bournemouth (GW14). Plan is to sacrifice Lacazette rather than Aguero to do so, giving me 3x City.

Laca's done alright for me in isolation since GW6, but it's been quite frustrating seeing cheaper options [Jimenez / Wilson especially] keep up with him. Watching him live is quite frustrating - always feel that he's not involved enough, as well as consistently switching positions throughout the game. Always seems "satisfied" with one goal - whereas Sterling/Aguero/Kane feel like more explosive options, therefore more suitable for captaincy.

With a strong enough bench, I can ride out the rotation if one of Sterling / Aguero doesn't play - can't see Pep going without both.

Pep's quotes on Sterling are quite effusive as well. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46092194

have always planned to do Sterling to Salah for a hit for next weekend and to captain Salah. I went without a liverpool attacker for their home game against Cardiff and I dropped from 12k to 50k in 1 week. No chance I’m doing that again. You’d be mad to sell Mané or Salah before Fulham at home.

I brought him in for Eriksen in GW7 and since then he's returned me 65 points (which includes a no-show in GW9 and a captain spot this week). So, I'd say that even with the risk of rotation in the odd game he's definitely worth his price.

all depends if you're a FFSheep or a wolf I guess. Keep Salah for his 13m and mediocre returns for his price out of fear of ownership or drop for Sterling, who costs less, has more points, looks sharp and plays for a very attacking team. Go figure.

      1. WesMantooth
        • 13 Years

Limiting the questions asked to only salh v sterling is'nt particularly fruitful. Furthermore limiting that discussion to fear of ownership is evene less fruitful. Surely the ones contemplating getting sterling are'nt only measuring his expected returns against salah's. And surely if they do, ownership wont be the only deciding factor.

In your world your either A) a sheep because you own salah and not sterling, or B) a wolf because you own sterling and not Salah, which makes absolutely no sense.

Scored 50 points in the 5 of 6 gwks he played after those comments.

Kind of kicking myself for not going with "my gut" at the time, but making that move would of course derailed me in to making different moves than the ones that helped me climb that part of the season.

I have a question for the FPL community. If you were faced with the dilemma of accommodating Sterling into your FPL squad, which of the following alternatives would you choose ?
    1) Buy him as a replacement for Hazard/Salah
    2) Downgrade a premium striker like Aguero/Aubameyang/Kane to fund Sterling as an additional premium midfielder
    3) Ignore Sterling

Yep. Rage transferred him outbefore he played in anticipation of a blank, thought it would save time.

Yup, was going to wait to do Maddison, Mitro --> Martial and Jimenez.. But I saw last night Mitros drop and Martials rise. So I burnt my 2 frees. Fingers crossed my greed doesn't come back to haunt me with any European injuries.

Anything you would do for a hit here? £0.2 ITB

    Fabianski
    Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Balbuena
    Hazard, Salah, Maddison, Fraser
    Aguero, Arnautovic
    (Success, Stephens, Doherty)

No but keep an eye on the Maddison and Richarlison prices so you don't get priced out of a move

I'm already nervous. Just hoping I can hold out until Saturday before I make the switch.

Where's the rest of your money? I have the same team but with Wilson instead of Success.
