Should FPL managers own Aguero or Sterling?

Raheem Sterling’s 21-point haul against Southampton in Gameweek 11 has caused a disturbance in the Fantasy Premier League force.

There are plenty of managers who are weighing up whether he is a better option than the highly-owned Sergio Aguero. His 7.7% ownership means there is a potential opportunity to get him in now and use him as a powerful differential before the masses cotton on.

So we’ve compared the two individuals over the course of the campaign to find out which one is worth having and how Fantasy managers should handle Sterling’s recent explosion of points.

  4. Salah or Mané - or both?

    Salah VS Mané

I have been an FPL Salah supporter since the very beginning last year and always have backed him.
FPL is very much a game where you have to weight the stats, your eye-test result, a little bit of biased POV because you'd always prefer one's player style and to find the right balance between trusting your long-term approach and stupid stubbornness, mix that up and come up to the most efficient and exciting solution.

I have always found exciting to own Salah and I think it is important to own a "fun" player.

That being said, I am starting to seriously reconsider the Salah VS Mané debate as I am working on my WC.

We're now 10+ game through the season and Salah and Mané have very similar PPM ratio

    Salah: 0.071
    Mané: 0.073

But what is very important to notice in my opinion is that every time Salah hauled this season, Mané did so. So Mané is covering Salah pretty well so far.

Looking at the stats, a 3.2£ price difference can't be justified between the two.

But one question remains: Salah finished last year with a stunning 0.104 PPM ratio against 0.067 for Mané so at the moment Salah clearly runs under expectation and Mané a bit over it.

    So salah or Mané?

I'm with you regarding the dilemma. Salah has always been my route to Liverpool's attack rather than Mane, however considering the PPM so far this season, the 3.2m can be properly utilized (planned to get Sterling with it) elsewhere.

I got Salah at 13m and he dropped to 12.8m at one point, but now that he's back at 13m I'll definitely swap him for Mane after this GW irregardless of the result.

After a few eye-tests, Salah seemed to be lacking that finishing touch and the constant losing out on bps doesn't help it either.
No doubt Salah will end the season with more points compared to Mane, but 3.2m worth more? Perhaps not.

i know he has matched him so far, beating him on ppg even when you factor in mane missed huddersfield, but i really don't buy into the idea that mane can match salah long term. what i do buy into is that he can match him in terms of value, even beat him there

      The key is captaincy..

The week's where I won't captain Salah I'll be happy to have Mane as cover.

Which is why he will be leaving for Sterling after this week

Owned Salah since the start but looking at those figures, will probably shift to Mane on WC.

Salah has played 1 game more and only has 2 further points to his name. For the price he isn't looking worthwhile. Take the lack of BPS into consideration too and Liverpool just don't look as important offensively as they did last season.

The fear factor is the reason I've held Salah for so long but I'll be looking at the switch in 4 GW time. Mane is proving he can cover him.

Yeah tricky one. Based on expected goals and assists per 90, and translating this to FPL points, Salah is ticking along at 6 points per 90 (including 2 appearance points per 90). Mane is only coming out at 3 points per 90 (including 2 appearance points per 90). Adjusted for price this is 0.46 points per 90 per million for Salah and only 0.30 points per 90 per million for Mane. So yeah Salah is running cold at the moment and Mane very hot. If their respective performances revert to the mean then we will see Salah more than justifying his increased cost over Mane.

expectation has no correlation with reality. I expect to get seduced and bedded by 3 beautiful Swedish ladies this weekend. In reality I'll wake up next to the Mrs snoring and farting.

Look at the reality, Salah costs a fortune and others around him are delivering similar or better for a lot less. We're 11 game weeks in ffs.

Expectations is what this game is all about. We pick our squad based on what we expect and predict, and we make transfers based on our prediction.

When youre saying "were 11 weeks in" your effectively voiving the opinion that one can expect things to remain as they are going forward. When others are arguing pro Salah, they are using stats, eye-test etca to voice their opinion on why we should expect more going forward.

The expectations re Salah, on either side of the discussion, does have correlation with reality. The swedes are a bad example. Salah is neither farting or snoring, and Salah is royalty, and we all know they clean up nice once they their tailored clothes on for celebrations.

I think it's important to recognise that the past isn't always a great predictor of the future. Yes, Mane has matched Salah so far, but will he continue to do so? Personally I don't think he will. Is Salah worth 3m more than Mane? No he isn't but that's where captaincy comes into play. If you're not going to captain Salah often then by all means you should downgrade to Mane (or Sterling) but he might be my captain in the next 5 GWs with the exception of GW14 when Hazard has Fulham and City play Bournemouth. Despite his haul against Cardiff I don't see Mane as a reliable captain, Salah definitely is.

Salah has out scored Mane so far but Mane owners have had the benefit of the extra funds to spend elsewhere, so it depends what Mane owners have done with the £££.

I expect Salah to start pulling away from Mane over the next 5 games and push on from now on

In my opinion, managers that have gone for Mane over Salah have been extraordinarily lucky that Mane has matched Salah for points thus far. Salah's xG is almost double that of Mane, while his xA is almost three times that of Mane. Mane is outscoring his xG by 60% which is unsustainable (Messi only outscores his xG by 25%). Salah is underscoring his xG by 28%.

Salah also has penalties over Mane now. Salah shoots way more and has more key passes, he also plays in a more advanced position than Mane.

On the eye-test from what I've watched, Salah has always looked very threatening while Mane has looked largely invisible and has a couple times popped up towards the end of a game with a tap-in while doing nothing beforehand (this happened against Palace and Cardiff). Salah has looked a little off in terms of his finishing, but I'd back him to turn that around, especially with an easy run over the next 5.

Tears will be shed around here by the next 5 weeks, there will be a period of 2 weeks where Salah scores 30 points and Mane gets 5-10. Then he'll be worth the extra 3m.

That's exactly the way I see it. The only problem is that the same thing happens in every game; the ball always falls into Mane's feet in good positions, regardless of how involves he otherwise is. It doesn't appear sustainable but 11 gameweeks is a long period of time.

Actually, in statistics 11 weeks is a very small sample size. Mane has actually already begun to drop off imo, he has only scored in 1 of the last 6 gameweeks (even though that was a brace).

11 weeks is a small sample size when only looking at number of points scored. When you look more deeply at underlying statistics, 11 weeks is okay as a sample size (since you can look at multiple different measures of attacking threat rather than just points scored).

Sorry I missed your comment here. Just came across the email now.

Salah's stats have always been superior to Mane's, but Mane is good value given he's the focal point in Liverpool's attack (along with Salah), nailed and receives the ball in good positions. The risk with owning Salah is the effect on your team's balance and the lack of bonus points, which Mane hoovers up when he does anything. Last week I noticed Salah's greater goal involvement didn't give him an edge over Mane due to the bonus issue (before this weekend). You need 30% more points from Salah than Mane and more than almost every other player in the league to justify the price.

I've been taking the risk since before Cardiff but I don't think I'll hold long term with the likes of Sterling, Aguero and Hazard being captain worthy (and much better stats than Mane to be fair).

Anyone with half a brain knows Salah will pull away from Mane, sooner or later, and is with the extra outlay.

I've currently got both, but it's going to be Mane making way for Sterling next gw, after Fulham.

I have held both Salah and Mane since GWK 1. I intend to keep both up until GWK 16 when Liverpool's fixtures become more difficult and remove Salah during my GWK 16 wildcard.
Salah currently not justifying the extra 3m outlay compared to Mane. I think the reason is that teams are now so aware of his threat that they are doubling up on him when he has the ball and they are also doing the research (knowing he turns in on his left in certain situations etc) so I have noticed his shots are being blocked a lot more this season.

      Some thoughts:

      - Judging on what has already happened is too simple. Mane has matched Salah this far, but will that continue? I doubt it, but at the same time I question Salah being worth 3m+ over Mane.

      - Think 1 is enough after the Fulham game. They're not clicking as much as City, but I still want one of them as the fixtures are pretty nice. Going with 1 is less risky and more flexible compared to owning none or both. Besides, can only captain one of them so if you own both then Mane is a 10m player you wont captain. Although thats fine, I rather prefer to spread the cash.

      - What people need to ask themselves is whether you can stick by your decision or not. If you only got Mane, what do you do when Salah hauls and Mane blanks? Are you going to knee-jerk Salah in? In the opposite case, what do you do when Mane outscores Salah, are you gonna make the switch after already losing out on the deal? Knee-jerking these guys in and out could potentially cost a lot of points.

for me, it goes down to capitaincy in next six weeks:

GW13 - Sterling/Aguero vs WHM; Salah has wat
GW14 - Hazard vs FUL; Salah has EVE
GW15 - Salah vs bur; in this GW there is no other standout capitaincy option except Kane vs sot, but not many people has him/ will have him, maybe Arnie vs CAR is an option
GW16 - Laca vs HUD; Salah has bou
GW17 - Sterling/Aguero vs EVE; Salah has MUN
GW18 - Laca vs BUR; Salah has wol

For me only GW15 looks like a standout capitaincy fixture for Salah and I believe I can live with not owning him. He is too expensive to be capitained only one in next 6 GWs.

From my observations this season, Liverpool haven't been as strong offensively. Their midfield hasn't been performing nearly as well as last season. However, I believe they look better as an attacking unit when Shaqiri and Keita play. If that happens more often, we might see the Liverpool of last season and that might get the best out of Salah.

Even in the PL games, Salah has been more of an attacking threat whenever Shaqiri is on the pitch. It shouldn't be a surprise as Shaqiri is the most creative out of their central midfielders alongwith Milner. They probably need someone who can play more like a No. 10 and Shaqiri fits the bill.

You have a very legitimate question but I don’t agree with your analysis. I am confident that Salah will finish the season with more points than Mane but that doesn’t mean it’s better to own him vs Mane plus another upgraded player.

The problem with PPM is that it’s backward looking. How somebody has performed is no indication to future performance. What you would usually do in the real world is compare to the same period last year and Salah is actually scoring higher than then. His performances started really accelerating by about Christmas as I recall (I haven’t checked but now he has a higher score now than then). That could well happen again. There are a number of players who “start slow”, Kane being one historically with his August drought in previous seasons. I see simple averages quoted here all the time as a comparison which is silly because if a player scores heavily in the first 3-4 games and then reverts to type, this is included in the calculation when it’s not a guide. Think a Capoue from last season who started well. You need a moving average (ideally exponential one for reasons I won’t give here) but most people look 5-7 games ahead so it makes sense to use a moving average of 6 games. In the last 6 games Salah is scoring 6.3 vs 4 for Mane so is on better form. I’d look at standard deviation of score too - you’d rather have somebody with a low volatility of returns. Basically, Mane is not matching Salah in recent games, the most relevant, but he was outperforming him early in the season. And Salah could really accelerate from here.

All that said, I think if you can, have both for this weekend. But when their fixtures stiffen, I think it might make sense to get rid of Salah to allow you to get Kane and other Spurs players from GW15. I probably wouldn’t have Mane either for that matter.

Not to mention counting fantasy points is no way to gauge form. Mane is playing poorly. Salah is playing quite well.

One has nothing to do with the other. Salah is 13m so can be swapped out for any other big hitter. Why link him to mane in any way? Mane need to be compared to the likes of Silva, Mahrez, sane, eriksen, alli and others in his price range.

    Fabianski/Patricio

    Salah/Hazard/Siggy/Murphy/Obiang
    Aguero/Wilson/Arnautovic

2 FTs, 0 in the bank.

I would switch one of your Wolves defenders (no need for a triple up anymore it seems)
Or Obiang to Diagana, he seems to be getting some hype on here, although I've not seen much of him myself

Have 0 in the bank, so no money to "upgrade" to Diangana. Agree he is a better pick, though.
Think I'll hang on the the Wolves-boys til after Hudderfield and Cardiff.

3 wolves going forward is a bit hopeful but your team is great IMO.
Having said that, i have 3 wolves (Jimenez instead of bennet), they have HUDDS (h) and Cardiff (a) after arsenal match, so I am holding until then.

Will Kun realistically haul vs Utd in the derby?

This is the question (along with team and injury news tonight) that will help decide if this hit is worthwhile to give me Arnie plus the ‘Pool attack double up while risking one week without City attack

Kun, Fraser > Arnie, Mané (-4)

It would give me this team for this week with 0.3itb

    Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Mendy, Duffy
    Salah (c), Mané, Haz, Madd
    Arnie, Wilson
    (Foster) (Success, Doherty, Capoue)

Plan would then be to get either Kun or Sterling back for GW13. WC still available

Help me out as I’m agonising over this one!

    Thanks

United have 1 clean sheet all season, and have conceded 18 goals.
City have the most potent attack in the PL.
I know it's a derby so there will be extra motivation, but on paper City should blitz a very poor United team, especially in defence.

In my heart I know this is probably true but I’m def nervous about not owning Arnie. This is the week to get in if not already owned.

My alternatives to get him are:
        Maddison, Success > Arnie, 4.3 (-4)
Or dropping one of RAM to fund

This felt like a one week punt without City to capitalise on a ‘Pool fixture where they are bound to score big and get in Arnie in form

I know it's easy for me to say as I own him, but I wouldn't get too hung up on not owning Arnautovic this week. West Ham are hardly prolific away - just checked and they've scored 5 goals in 5 games, and 3 of those came against Everton. Having missed the Burnley haul, I think you can wait till GW14 before pulling the trigger

I would tend to agree if they weren’t playing Huddersfield, an utterly shocking team who only just won their first match, vs an equally shocking Fulham, and even then didn’t even score (was an own goal)!

I thought they shut down Fulham reasonably well on Monday. You're also taking a -4 so would need a couple of goal involvements to make it work, or a goal plus bonus, he then plays City! I think the issue for me is the players you'd need to take out too - Aguero, Fraser, Maddison etc - could all do well this week. Go with your gut though, and good luck!

This will help them with nothing and anyone thinking it will have any bearing is being shortsighted.

Imo (and I’m a ‘Pool fan) the issue was we stupidly underestimated how strong Red Star would be at home and allowed things we would never have normally allowed defensively. This coupled with sub par performances from Studge, Lallana (although is he ever above sub par?), Robbo and Salah in particular, we couldn’t get back into it after the initial shock

Fulham are genuinely awful, particularly at defending. You can’t compare them to a team who haven’t lost a game in their league (even if it’s Serbian) in 41 matches

I think he's a good option - decent stats (12 shots over the last 3 gameweeks) and playing in an attacking team. His name was thrown about a couple of weeks ago but got shut down, probably because of his 'reputation'

Morata has an unsustainably high conversion rate, but I agree that he's interesting

I have no idea how I'd fit him in on my WC team though, it's kind of an awkward price, and quite a lot of £££ Chelsea in one's team, assuming that Hazard is there too, plus perhaps Alonso.

    Man City/Mendy

Looking at their fixtures over the next 6 - Man Utd (h) West Ham (a) Bournemouth (h) Watford (a) Chelsea (a) Everton (h)

How many clean sheets do you think over those? Is Mendy a rotation risk considering his defensive work isn't that great? All those fixtures seem to have a degree of difficulty imo, so I'm not sure about Mendy over the next 6.

    jimenez confuses me.
very cheap striker for a decent team.
that decent team doesn't seems to score many goals.
    might be on pens.
might be second choice taker behind a guy who always plays 90mins.
has lots of efforts on goal.
doesn't look clinical, fired a load at lloris last gw for example.
picks up assists as he's good with his back to goal, laying off to likes of doherty steaming in.
goals always more appealing than assists. 3 goals in 11 gameweeks now, 1 from a pen (how often will they win 2 pens in a match?), 1 vs 10 men.
mexico's #1 striker now, good sign.
has to travel to central america 4 or 5 times a season.

overall i like him but i feel he could be so much better.
not suggesting ings is better but i think we should start really taking notice of ings' record with long as opposed to austin. logically it makes sense, long can't score to save his life but he will run the channels all day and be a nuisance. austin meanwhile is essentially a greedy poacher, not the partner you want for your fpl asset.

Having captained Sterling this week, I am fairly happy with how it is going. Minus the fact I took Laca and Gudmundsson out this week, and Richarlison last week. Hey ho.

    Ederson
    Robertson - Mendy - Alonso
    Hazard - Maddison - Fraser - Sterling - Mane
    Arnautovic - Success

    Subs: Hamer - S. Cook - Wan B - Mitrovic

Considering switching out Sterling and Mitrovic for Salah and Jiminez. Is it that crazy? I was only originally planning on keeping Sterling for the one GW for now, and having no City for the derby, just in case.

Thanks, I'm just concerned Success might come on for a 5 minute cameo.

Salah, Hazard, Mane & Sterling all on the price rise, Aguero seemingly the fall guy judging by net transfers.

Is Sterling >Hazard for free madness considering his 21 point haul last week?

My thinking is Sterling has never done anything against United and Hazard is Hazard and home to Everton.

It's not madness... Do you have any other City cover?

Might be easier to show you my team, it scored 95 points last week thanks to Sterling and Kun.

        Ryan / (Stekelenburg)
David Luiz / Robertson / Mendy / (Bruno) / (Balbuena)
        Sterling / Mane / Barkley / Richarlison / Martial
        Arnie / Aguero / (Vokes)

        I have 0.5 itb

        Any ideas?

Great scoutcast last night guys!! best yet! I really enjoyed it 🙂

I loved the way that you talked about so many options for our teams for a change, as opposed to just talking about 1 or 2 players. a good summary of what is going on with the best players and teams right now.

Good article, decided to go with both and have already brought Sterling in this week, having had Aguero since the start.

Team atm (already did Mitro to Succes)

    Patricio
    Alonso - Mendy - Robertson
    Sterling - Hazard - Richarlison - Maddison
    Aguero - Arnautovic - Succes

    Hamer-Obiang-WanBissaka-Doherty

    Plan is to make one more transfer (-4), can't decide between;
    A Sterling -> Salah
    B Maddison -> Mane

    Any thoughts?

I know it sounds crazy but if Liverpool somehow don't deliver again this week(highly unlikely) someone who capped Hazard or had some other differential captain would have a great week
