How premium options compare with best-ever FPL scores: Raheem Sterling

As Fantasy Premier League managers consider breaking up the template of premium options ahead of upcoming fixture swings, we continue our latest series.

We are comparing some of the more expensive options on offer against their best-ever FPL scores to see whether they are justifying their price.

After studying Harry Kane (£12.4m) earlier this week, we now move on to Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling (£11.2m).

Sterling’s best-ever FPL season was recorded in the 2017/18 campaign when he scored 18 goals and assisted 17 others.

Those figures combined for a total score of 229 points, 19 of which were registered through bonus.

So far in 2018/19, Sterling has amassed 79 points at an average of 6.58 per Gameweek. If he continues at his current rate he would record a total score of 250 points this season, which would be best of his FPL career thus far.

Unless Laporte picks up BPS. What's the point? Need to be the Phil Jones of last year to justify his selection.

Had a good scoring record at Bilbao. Always looks a threat on set peicee and nailed on.

Zero league goals in La Liga last season. No BPS potential. Can't bring myself to will on 6 points each week.

The point is the clean sheets - 7 in 12, including 6 straight. Also City haven't conceded in open play since GW4.

At 5.5m he was a good pick. Don't really fancy him at the 6m mark.

Looking at Bernardo Silva’s stats, playing time, and price—doesn’t he offer the most value as a city mid?

My only trepidation to bringing him in is KDB taking his spot, but that won’t be til mid December earliest.

Tough one, Dilva comes with more rotation risk over the next few fixtures in my opnion but obviously City are streets ahead of United. Digne has the assist potential and Mina is more of a goal threat. I'd probably just about go for the first option but wait until all these friendlies are over!

Would you move Mendy to Robbo for free if you had trent as well?

Have exact funds to do it so would have to act fast, have 2 frees this week so that mitigates some risk...

I rarely like a double up at the back, except Chelsea a few seasons ago when they printed clean sheets for fun. Keane and Digne certainly take my fancy and would give some nice cash to use elsewhere...

Is this too much this gameweek:

Mendy, shaquri and kamara -> Johnny, Richarlison and Jimenez for a -8. To put it in context I am tryIng to invest in my bench going into the xmas schedule. I know these 3 players I have this week will probably get me 1 point if shaq comes off the bench. The transfers would make my squad look like this:

    Fabianski

    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, Johnny

    Salah, hazard, richarlison

    Aguero, Arni, Jimenez

    Hamer, f.anderson, wan b, Stephens.

I know I know, I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago bringing in Barkley.

I regret it now, and with the Mendy injury it has prompted me to move Barkley -> Martial and also Mendy -> Doherty

This cost me -4 but I am in 1st place so ... I feel good about it.

    New Squad:
    Ryan (Hamer)
    Alonso - Roberton - Doherty (Bennett-AWB)
Hazard - Salah - Martial - Felipe Anderson (Neves)
    Arnautovic - Aguero - Wilson

I'd thought of keeping Mitrovic with a possible Ranieri bounce but Mendy's injury is forcing my hand. I'm thinking of using my 2 FTs on Mitrovic + Mendy to Jiminez + Alonso (exact money available) unless anyone has a better idea? I know I missed the latter pair's price rises but hey ho!
Any opinions welcomed! Ta very much

TAA - Mendy - Doherty - Duffy - Wan Bissaka
      Hazard - Salah - Fraser - Martial - Gundogan
      Aguero - Arnautovic - Mitrovic

So, does Mendy + Mitrovic to Alonso + Jiminez work best?

Evening all, there's not much going on over this international break other than the big Mendy news so I thought I'd pen my thoughts on this interesting dilemma that Mendy's FPL owners are left facing.

For those without Alonso or Robertson, the "template" move would be to get whichever one you don't own. Trippier would be an obvious move, but he's an injury doubt and Spurs face Chelsea and Arsenal in the next 2. I see Digne being presented as a viable alternative. His attacking potential looks extremely good for the short term, but in the next 6 he faces Liverpool,Spurs, City and Watford - all sides I'd expect Everton to concede against. Clean sheets are the bread and butter for defenders after all. He's a cheaper asset yes, but do we really need funds in midfield now? To me personally there's hardly any semi 6m asset who stands out.

Which brings me to Aymeric Laporte. City have the best (lowest) xGc in the league by a distance, which surprisingly is much better away from home (rather than at home as you'd expect with most teams). 5 of the next 8 are away, with only one of them being against the top 6 - that too against Chelsea where they kept a clean sheet last season (another of the reasons why I believe this defence is fixture proof). Contrary to popular opinion, Laporte unlike Walker (at threat from Danilo) and Stones (at threat from Kompany/Otamendi) offers a safe and nailed on route in the City backline as alluded to by Pep himself:

"But especially because he is left-footed playing on the left side," Guardiola added. "He gives us an alternative for the build-up, quicker and faster than the other ones who are right-footed. When you receive to go to the right, you have to go inside, because you want to go to the right foot. In the left, you go to that side, so it helps us to create this build-up [to the left, and to the right with a diagonal pass]. With the right foot, it is a little bit more complicated. That would be, with the ball, one of the reasons why. It is not just the left, his attention defensively, winning duels, that is why."

Hence it comes across as no secret that Laporte has played every single minute of the PL and CL this year, as like Nicolas Otamendi last year, Pep has already marked him down as one of favorites. Laporte, like Otamendi, does possess some goal threat as well which adds another string in his bow, as shown by his goal against Wolves and Shakhtar very recently. What helps is that no team has been awarded more corners than Manchester City this season - 92 which is a far way off from Bournemouth on 75 as the second. So one always get the feeling that a goal might not be too far away.

From the transfer trends it can be seen that the vast majority of the Mendy sales have been directed towards Laporte. Ederson is already at nearly 30% ownership and if my calculations are right, I'd expect City defence's effective ownership to be around 65-70% this week. A clean sheet would mean that something around 5 points would be added to the top 10k average. I for one, don't want to be hedging my bets against what is, stastically the best defence in the league. 🙂

This is really helpful - thank you! I was thinking of Mendy to Alonso (Mitrovic to Jiminez freeing up the exact money) but I now reckon just Mendy to Laporte makes more sense right now...

Given Liverpool current form and formation, would you go for Salah or Mane?
Salah is playing as central striker, which should enhance his points prospect. However, one thing to be noticed is whatever double digit points he has got, Mane has scored heavily in them as well.

So can it be said its enough to have Mane to cover salah? And if you had salah, would you go lose him for Mane and sterling instead?

Evening guys, sorry just logging in so sorry if this has already been discussed at length, but do we know how long Mendy is actually out for?
If it was just keyhole surgery to clean out the knee, we could only be taking about a couple of weeks - planned precisely to happen over the IB to minimise his time out.
I see loads of people are making plans to dump, but TV aside, I might hold off if he is only going to miss a match or two.
    What's the scoop?
