Arsenal got back to winning ways as they saw off Burnley 3-1 in Gameweek 18’s Saturday lunchtime fixture.

With the matches that followed offering little in the way of Fantasy returns, success for managers this week largely depended on which Gunners were owned.

We’ve gone over the top talking points from the Emirates Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang x2 (£11.5m), Alex Iwobi (£5.5m) | Ashley Barnes (£5.6m)

Assists: Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m), Mesut Özil (£8.0m) | Kevin Long (£4.2m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) owners were rewarded for their patience in Gameweek 18 as the Arsenal striker finally delivered the double-figure haul he has promised for some time. Not surprisingly, no player in Saturday’s match had more shots on target than Aubameyang, which underpinned his success. After comparing favourably in our recent Captain Sensible article, he scored twice in the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Burnley. With the number of chances he was having in recent weeks, Aubameyang had been unlucky not to find the net since the north London derby Gameweek 14. It looked as if his misfortune would continue on Saturday as he was denied by James Tarkowski‘s (£4.7m) goal-saving challenge in the opening minutes. But, in the 13th minute, the Gabonese international broke the deadlock after an excellent clip back from Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m).

That was good news also for those who kept faith in the Bosnian wing-back, as he had been a slight injury doubt ahead of the match. Kolasinac was arguably one of Arsenal’s best players at the Emirates Stadium, constantly asking Burnley questions with surging runs down the left wing and into the opposition box. Indeed, no player created more chances in the game than Kolasinac.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m) started alongside Aubameyang for the second home match in a row. That possibly indicates that Emery does prefer using them together at the Emirates Stadium, rather than when Arsenal are away from home. The Frenchman’s owners may have been hoping for more than just an assist but it was a solid enough performance from Lacazette nonetheless. He looks likely to start against Brighton on Boxing Day as his minutes were managed in the 78th minute, coming off for Alex Iwobi (£5.5m). He wasn’t too happy about it either, visibily annoyed to have been substituted, which also bodes well for his desire to score in Gameweek 19.

“I didn’t see (him being angry). I think he is happy with our victory. He wants to score. When a striker doesn’t score I like he is angry with this situation. He worked very well today. I think he is going back to the best Lacaztte.” – Unai Emery

The fact that Lacazette was brought off with Arsenal leading the game, while Aubameyang was allowed to complete the 90 minutes, does cause some concern for owners of the former Borussia Dortmund man. Unai Emery may have left him on the pitch to avoid denying him a hat-trick, but the fact remains that Aubameyang has now played 270 minutes in the space of seven days. Lacazette getting some time off does mean he could start in his colleague’s place on Boxing Day.

Emery initially lined his Arsenal side up in a 4-3-1-2 formation with Sokratis Papastathopoulous (£5.1m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) at centre-back, Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) flanking them. However, Monreal was forced off with a muscle injury in the 37th minute and had to be replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner (£4.6m), further adding to Emery’s concerns at the back. At that point, he switched to a back-three with Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) dropping to centre-back alongside Lichtsteiner and Sokratis while Kolasinac and Maitland-Niles pushed on as wing-backs.

“Muscular, we made the change to not take a big risk with him. I don’t know if he can play at Brighton. Koscielny can play and Mustafi is close.” – Unai Emery

The ongoing defensive crisis at Arsenal continues to hurt their clean sheet potential. Coming into Gameweek 18, no team had registered fewer shots on target away from home this season than Burnley. However, the Clarets troubled their illustrious hosts on several occasions, even recording more chances considered to be big by Opta. It was, therefore, no surprise when Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) fired Burnley back into the game in the second half. That means that the main reason Kolasinac has Fantasy appeal is his attacking threat, rather than anything Arsenal can offer defensively.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.7m) and Robbie Brady (£5.4m) were not fit enough to play the match, which forced Burnley into a 5-3-2 formation. While both wide-men could return in Gameweek 19, Sean Dyche may opt to keep that shape when Everton come to Turf Moor on Boxing Day as it did allow his side to attack Arsenal with numbers through the middle. However, we were unable to get any fitness updates from the Clarets manager as the majority of his press conference, doubling up as the one in advance of Gameweek 19, was dominated by his strong opinions on diving in football.

Arsenal XI (4-3-1-2): Leno; Kolasinac; Monreal (Lichtsteiner 37′), Sokratis, Maitland-Niles; Guendouzi, Xhaka, Elneny (Torreira 59′); Özil; Lacazette (Iwobi 78′), Aubameyang.

Burnley XI (5-3-2): Hart; Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Long, Bardsley (Lowton 83′); Hendrick, Cork, Westwood; Wood (Vokes 77′), Barnes (Vydra 77′).

Can you beat this team if you had set and forget from GW1 (i.e. within £100m original budget) to now. Would have scored 1,215pts ignoring autosubs:

    Alisson - (Fabianski)
    Alonso - Robertson - VVD - (Doherty) - (Luiz)
    Hazard(c) - Sterling(v) - Fraser - Pereyra - (Camarasa)
    Aubameyang - Wilson - Jimenez

A great result for them today, and excellent fixtures coming up.

Already brought in Rashford, Martial and Pogba. The first bandwagon I've joined this season. They will rocket in price, and can fulfil the role of a top 6 heavy hitter at the price of an Anderson or cut-price David Silva. No brainer 😉

I had a look at the attacking data and the one that makes the most appeal is Lingard. He was prominent in penalty box touches, chances created and goal atempts. Plus he is the cheapest.
Pogba and Martial only had 1 touch in the box/1 goal attempt.
Rashford is the other option with good goal attempts/pen box touches recorded.

Martial. Better finisher than Rashford and more attacking than Pogba. Will be more nailed than Lingard IMO because Martial is the type of attacking player that Utd used to start when Fergie and Phelan were in charge (and OGS and Phelan are a throwback to that style of management IMO).

Sanchez is still out injured. Lukaku is on compassionate leave, which helps Rashford and Martial for now. Utd unlikely to change a winning team for the next GW (maybe they will after that due to the small rest period). But Utd have no EFL Cup commitments and an easy FA Cup tie (Reading at Old Trafford) so they don't need to rotate much until the CL starts again in February.

      Kolasinac Lovren Doherty
      Sterling Sané Martial Pogba

      (4.0 AWB Camarasa Chambers)

I was always selling Wilson this week, so Rashfords performance and stats made it an easy transfer.

Buying young too. Just got a good feeling about him for points over this period. Was very attacking, on direct free kicks and 5.7m isn’t a lot in the grand scheme of things. Gut pick.

Brought Martial back in for Cardiff. Def considering Pogba and Rashford.

Tempted to bring in many of them. Great fixtures, new coach effect and quality players. Pogba for example should be fresh since José "rested" him. Lingard was good last year against lesser teams and should be good against parked busses. The bigger question is who to drop and the fact, that it is almost pure lottery to choose the best player(s).

Dropping Auba for Rashford to get Sané too early did hurt though.

Bought Shaw,Martial and Rasford for -4 this gw
They are great price with Sanchez and Lukaku out and with good fixtures ahead of them
Like to be ahead of the curve, and feels good when it pays off
Those 3 could have even get me a lot more points in this game but its ok,im not greedy 🙂

Going to bring in Rashford and probably lingard.(would need a hit for martial as 0.1m off)
Good fixtures. Think there will be some momentum.
And they are all comparatively cheap.
These are good players that performed relatively well already under a system that didn't necessarily suit them. Put a smile on these younger players and they'll prosper.
Plus don't see much utd rotation whilst they are winning.
Plus don't think I'm sacrificing much bringing them in for mitrovic and Anderson.

United had an expected goals of 2.2 yesterday. I wouldn't get too carried away. They over-performed with a few worldies.

Pogba had 1 penalty box touch. Unfortunately he still isn't being deployed in an advanced role.

Martial created 5 chances yesterday. Looks like a spread of points could be on offer from him.

Lingard or Pogba for me. Martial and Rashford will fight for one LW spot when Lukaku is back, but Lingard looked good yesterday and can play CAM if they change system too. Being cheapest helps. Currently can't afford Pogba but he's the best choice imo.

Martial in for me. Already got as many goals as richarlison who is heralded as essential. Martial plays for a more talented team has incredible fixtures with 4 easy home games in the next 6.

I'm not a fan of pogba as he is more of a holding player and creator... 2 of his assists yesterday were fortunate to say the least!

Rashford tempting if you need a striker to replace misfiring Wilson and Mitro for example.

Lingard is probably the least attractive for me although he is cheapest so if he's all you can afford then he should still get some points in the upcoming games.

I’ve had Lingz for two weeks now, for me he’s perfect 4th midfielder at 6.7M
I’m considering Pagba or Martial long term but would need to ship Rich or Fanderson which I’m happy with atm, I’ll probably wait and see how they line up when Lukaku is back
I’m watching United defenders now hoping one of them to become a decent 5.0M option to rotate with Doherty

We will play more aggressive, higher up the pitch and take more passing risks. Will leave us more exposed at the back since the players will still be learning that style of play. Can see a lot of similar results to yesterday were both teams score in high scoring games. Staying away from defensive picks but like the attacking ones.

For me attack is best form of defense, if ManU play high pressing attacking it will stop opponents creativity, additionally teams will be worried shipping 4 or 5 goals so they play more conservative keeping more players behind the ball focusing on breaking United attacks back which is tiering to do for 90 mins especially away at OT, I’d expect ManU to keep clean sheets at home but that’s just my gut feeling

Already had Martial and had the exact money needed to switch my 5th mid from Armstrong (failed punt when Hughes was sacked) to Lingard before his price rose so couldn't resist doubling up. I'll keep them both for a few weeks and then see about whether to hold or ship one/both.

    Pogba or Martial
    Martial or Pogba
    ...

    Its early days obviously
Pogba will be probably be more nailed as we can expect Ole to build team around him
Martial however is more attacking and I hope/guess is most nailed from top 3 - I hope Sanchez goes on the right when back. Ole wont make the mistake of Mou to take Martial out when in form.
Rash in rotation with Kaku and Lingard with Sanchez/Mata

    (Im a United fan)

    Thoughts?

Agree with all your points, Sanchez should be chucked on right wing or central strike imo and martial needs to be nailed on left wing he a player who needs to be starting. Mou was so stubborn and too harsh on the players, it doesn’t work like it used to.

Excited to see how we do for rest of the season

Thinking just Hazard in for Sterling and then either saving the other FT or changing Lowe to Bednarek. (1.4m then for upgrades later).

Anything else you see more obvious instead?

Current set up for next GW.
    Fabianski.
    Kola, Digne, Doherty.
    Rich, Sane, Sterling, Felipe.
    Mitro, Auba (vc), Kane (c).
    Hamer, AWB, Gibbs- White, Lowe.

    2ft, 0.9m.
