A fresh injury for Wilson as West Ham struggle without Arnautovic

Our write-up of the ten Gameweek 23 fixtures continues with a look back at a match that was contested on Saturday afternoon.

A Marko Arnautovic-less West Ham United fell to a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, who lost Callum Wilson to yet another injury on his comeback from a hamstring problem.

We round up the main Fantasy talking points, relevant manager quotes and headline injury updates from the mid-table clash at the Vitality Stadium in our Scout Notes article below.

Bournemouth 2-0 West Ham United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£6.5m), Joshua King (£6.3m)
  • Assists: David Brooks (£5.1m)

After scoring his tenth Premier League goal of the season and registering three Fantasy Premier League bonus points on his return from a hamstring injury, Callum Wilson (£6.5m) is back on the treatment table.

Wilson was replaced by Junior Stanislas (£6.0m) after 72 minutes of Saturday’s victory over West Ham United, with Eddie Howe providing an update in his post-match press conference:

I think it’s a problem with his knee. It’s nothing to do with his previous hamstring injury.

Callum’s very much a team player. He’s a vital part of what we do here and he knew how important the game was for us as a group. He delivered a very good display.

Joshua King (£6.3m) also hobbled off late in the match, with Howe telling Sky Sports:

Got nothing to tell you, we need to see how they are. Callum would appear the more serious, limping off, which is unlike him.

Any expectations of a goalfest at the Vitality Stadium failed to materialise and this was a cagier contest than perhaps anticipated, with not one shot on target being registered in the opening 45 minutes.

Wilson was at the heart of whatever the Cherries did well in attack, however, and showed just what his side were missing in the 2-0 defeat to Everton a week earlier.

The England striker’s goal was a superbly executed half-volley from outside the box and Wilson could have left with a double-digit haul had Lukasz Fabianski not brilliantly tipped his low drive onto the post just before the mid-price Fantasy forward’s substitution.

Wilson, who sits joint-first for assists among FPL forwards this season, could have banked an attacking return earlier in the game when his cross from the byline was nodded wide by David Brooks (£5.1m) with a fair chunk of the goal gaping.

King hadn’t previously scored since Gameweek 13 and it wasn’t until the final minute on Saturday that he registered his first shot on goal of the game, tapping in a Brooks pass after a swift counter-attack to put the match to bed.

Brooks and Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) continued in the same vein as much of the season: the young Wales international posing the bigger goal threat (registering more penalty box touches than anyone on show), with Fraser the arch-creator in the Bournemouth midfield.

On another day, the Scottish winger could have banked an attacking return or two.

Steve Cook (£4.4m) drew an excellent save from Fabianski with a header from a Fraser free-kick before the pint-sized midfielder’s deflected cross was almost turned in to his own net by Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m).

Fraser was also denied an assist for Wilson’s goal, as it was deemed that Issa Diop‘s (£4.3m) tackle deviated the cross from its intended destination.

Fraser happened to be the provider of a Nathan Ake (£5.0m) header that was ruled out for offside, meanwhile, with Wilson judged to be interfering with play.

Howe sprang a surprise by naming Artur Boruc (£4.0m) in goal instead of Asmir Begovic (£4.4m) and explained his decision after full-time:

[Boruc’s] form’s been very, very good, he’s trained excellently. In our Carabao Cup game against Chelsea, he was outstanding and made a number of good saves.

You tweak other positions in the team without really thinking about it but the goalkeeper one is always analysed greatly and I understand why, but I just felt he deserved to play today.

He’s the ultimate professional, Asmir. He’s fine and he understood the decision and very much supported Artur and his performance.

Bournemouth recorded only their second clean sheet in 13 Gameweeks, restricting West Ham to one shot on target and generally looking more solid than they have been in recent months.

Howe said his side have been working on tightening up at the back:

We’ve put a lot of hard work into the last few weeks and concentrated on our defending. It goes without saying, after the run that we’ve been on that’s what we would do and I’m very pleased that the players got their reward.

While far from their best in an attacking sense, West Ham still had their chances: Samir Nasri (£5.5m) firing inches wide of Boruc’s post in the first half before Andy Carroll (£5.4m) somehow skied an effort over the bar from close range after the break.

Carroll led the line to little effect on a rare start up front before being replaced by the fit-again Javier Hernandez (£6.1m) midway through the second half, with the Mexican forcing Boruc into his only save of the game on 79 minutes.

Carroll wasn’t helped by the ineffectual performances of Nasri, Felipe Anderson (£7.3m) and Michail Antonio (£6.8m) behind him, with the manner of the Hammers’ meek away loss conjuring up memories of the 2-0 defeat to Burnley in Gameweek 20.

Manuel Pellegrini said:

I am disappointed with the result. Maybe we had lots of possession and good football but you need to create more chances and shoot more against a team that has conceded 12 goals in the last four games. That is something we did not do well.

West Ham, of course, were without Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) for this encounter, the Austrian having been omitted from the match-day squad after a week dominated by talk of a potential move to China.

It was difficult to argue that West Ham didn’t miss the nous of their talismanic forward given the difficulty they experienced in breaking down the Cherries but Pellegrini said:

As a manager, you must make decisions on the players that work better during the week. Marko has another issue so I thought that it was not a good idea for him to play today.

We don’t need to talk about a player that was not in the squad. I never complain about players who are not here. We have nine players injured, let’s talk about the ones here that we brought to play this game.

We didn’t win, Marko Arnautovic didn’t play, so we must have other players to step up.

Lucas Perez (£6.2m) was also omitted from the 18-man squad, with Pellegrini adding:

Same as Marko, I chose the 18 players who performed the best during the week.

Jack Wilshere (£4.8m) was once again missing but Pellegrini is optimistic of the midfielder’s return early next month.

The Chilean manager said:

He is continuing with his six weeks of rest about his ankle. He is in treatment and I hope that next week maybe he can start making some running, on the treadmill or the other gym.

He will be ready the beginning of February.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Boruc; Clyne, S Cook, Ake, Smith; Brooks (Mousset 90′), Gosling, Lerma, Fraser (Daniels 90); King, Wilson (Stanislas 73′).

West Ham United XI (4-3-3): Fabianski; Zabaleta, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Noble (Diangana 78′), Rice, Nasri (Snodgrass 66′); Antonio, Carroll (Hernandez 66′), Anderson.

Roll a transfer and who would you start?

    Alisson/Speroni
    Doherty, Luiz, Bednerak, Wan, Digne
    Bilva, Salah, Anderson, Silva, Pogba
    Jimenez, Rash, Firmino

1.7 ITB (had this in mind to possibly bring Son back later if I like)

          🙂

For now I have And Wan Bed (in order)

Thought I would see how Pep plays Dilva/Bilva in the Cups, especially the FA and make a final decision on it, plus see about any injuries of course.

Yours loaded for me, you're doing so much better this year! 🙂 I'm only 95k right now 🙁

Good idea about waiting for the FA Cup, will probably give you a better idea who to start.

Yes saw your rank. Oh well, I'll try again later.

Last year was my first year and felt a bit out of place. I've been playing Dream Team for a few years and done very well at it but FPL is a completely different animal.

Trying to move in the right direction from where I am is going to be quite a challenge. Fun!

Yup, hopefully you can finish in the top 1k. That would be a great achievement, specially since it's only your 2nd year.

Have to hope the DGWers don't have a good week though as you've already used your WC, but that hasn't happened last year!

Yes I suppose it would be. Would have to come back next year to see if I could come close to it again if I do get within that mark.

I wanted to hold off with the WC but felt I had too many sudden and long term issues and preferred not to take the hits and get righted immediately. I'm actually looking forward to the Blanks and Doubles. I want to see how well I can do minus the WC. 🙂

Well even if you make it into top 10k it's great really, I haven't managed that myself and there are even special leagues for people who manage that feat.

I see that you don't like taking hits and it has served you well so far (compared to me especially - I've taken loads), but analyzing your WC still makes me think you should've taken one last round instead of playing it. You've only replaced a couple of starters and you shouldn't care much about your bench short term.

Still, this could play into your hand if there's a terrible DGW (like last year)! 🙂

Ya haha now if I end up close to but within 10,000, I'll be disappointed. 🙂

Perhaps I was wrong to have WC'd but after some time pondering, I went for it. Some of those bench guys I dumped allowed me to shave off costs too so I could allocate to others I wanted. Not making up excuses but a few that helped me with that and then also had Son, Kane and Lovren injured. I know many of the veterans in here would have shouted "Casual". Again I may have made a grave mistake but I've gone against the grain several times this season from holding 2.5 - 3.5 million in the bank for around the first 4-5 plus weeks and choosing players that the majority weren't getting in etc.

                      Let's see. 🙂

    Aaron Ramsey:
Wages wanted R250k per week 4 years. Total 52 Mil. (13 mil per year) Value after contract 0.
    Finding a replacement
24/25 year old at Ramsey Level. 40 mil tfr fee + R100k per week 5 years. Total 26 mil (5.2 mil per year.) Cost 66 mil.
Why Arsenal did not sign him
Possible sale after year 3, 60 mil with inflation. (Net cost 55.6 mil) Profit 4.6 mil before any interest component.
    A reasonable accounting viewpoint.
BUT WILL THEY EVER FIND ANOTHER AARON RAMSEY?

Feel like I have spent too much time on the high-priced mid merry-go-round. Going to abandon expensive strikers and just go with this for a while:

    Etheridge (Button)
    Robbo Digne Doherty Shaw AWB
    Salah Sane Ster Haz Pog
    Rashford Jimenez (Kamara)

Don’t love Shaw, but don’t see much else there worth a transfer. Digne will go to TAA at some point.

Still have free transfer. Nothing in bank. Balanced enough?

Looked into stats in the 4 games (LEI mci BOU CHE) when Jimenez and Jota have played up top together as strikers or wide forwards:

    Jimi: 312 min, 2 goals, 1 assist, 8 shots, 3 key passes, 1.22 xG, 0.84 xA
    Jota: 291 min, 4 goals, 1 assist, 6 shots, 2 key passes, 2.31 xG, 0.80 xA

The problem is that 4 games is not that good of a sample and if you take away last game they probably don't look that different.

Still, Jota has a decent price so he's tempting.

It's small, but still the only sample of them starting together up top.

The eye test will tell you that Jota is getting the big chances and is a much better finisher anyways.

If (big if) Chelsea progress in League Cup AND blank in 27 is moved to gw25 dgw vs Brighton, along with Everton vs City, the following 11dgwer FH team is affordable (even if Higuain is 10.0):

                Ryan
                Luiz Digne Duffy
                Sterling Sane Haz Siggy Rich
                Aguero Higuain

                MCI vs ARS eve
                EVE vs WOL MCI
                CHE vs HUD BRI
                BRI vs WAT che

These would be the fixtures. Could also make a strong team if Spurs/Burnley get a dgw but less appealing imo with Alli potentially injured.

Im behind by 110 pnts and have all my chips but my second WC left. And yes i agree hes scored against Bnmouth for the past 4 games but Chelseas so hit and miss this season. So Captain Haz, Sane, Pog or Rashy? Thanks a lot again guys

    Fabianski.
    Doherty, AWB, Digne, Bednarek.
    Rich, Sane, Pogba, Salah.
    Auba, Rashford.
    Hamer, Holebas, Camarasa, Kamara.
    1ft~ 5.5m ITB.

    1. Holebas -> Robertson. (3.6m left).
    2. Kamara-> Firmino. (0.6m left for Holebas-> TAA probably).
    3. Kamara-> Jimenez. (3.4m left).
    4. 1 + 3 combined for a -4. (1.5m left).

If (big if) Chelsea progress in League Cup AND blank in 27 is moved to gw25 dgw vs Brighton, along with Everton vs City, the following 11dgwer FH team is affordable (even if Higuain is 10.0):

    Ryan
    Luiz Digne Duffy
    Sterling Sane Haz Siggy Rich
    Aguero Higuain

    MCI vs ARS eve
    EVE vs WOL MCI
    CHE vs HUD BRI
    BRI vs WAT che

These would be the fixtures. Could also make a strong team if Spurs/Burnley get a dgw but less appealing imo with Alli potentially injured

      "...even if Higuain is 10.0..."

You seriously think he could be less? That seems likely to be the minimum he'll be.

Apart from which, the chance of this occurring is extremely low.

General consensus is that he will be 9.5-10 based on Twitter polls. Not sure why you're being so obtuse over him potentially being more than 10, which is very unlikely according to most people.

"...it's not massively unlikely statistically speaking."

You are letting Crellin's pretty spreadsheet fool you perhaps.

          1. Chance of Chelsea making the CC Final: c. 50%
          2. Chance of none of Chelsea, Brighton, City, Everton requiring a FAC replay: c. 45%
          3. Chance of the FA/PL getting their ducks in a row very quickly, including agreement from the clubs and broadcasters: c.20% based on previous evidence (and that's being generous).
          4. Chance of your scenario happening: c. 4.5% based on the above.

          😕

            • 9 Years

            I don't consider 4.5% massively unlikely. And personally I disagree with 3.

10 minutes of planning for something that has a one in 20 chance of happening isn't a lot.

What is the harm? I love fpl and I love planning. I said originally it was a big if. No need to be so miserable, you are coming across as quite pathetic.

Guess it depends on how many dgwers already in your team currently. I'd rather 11 dgwers then 7 or 8 in a blank gw than 3 or 4 dgwers and 11 in a blank gw.

To me the FH optimal use is a small dgw.

Ah, that was a bloody pain. I had Jota planned in for GW24 for a fair while, just needed to see him get 75 minutes last week. Then he goes and scores a damned hat-trick and destroys the differential. 🙁

I did consider Pereyra ➡ Jota last week but it would have been a -4 and Pereyra had Burnley at Vicarage Road. Timing is everything in FPL.

If you want a breakout punt for the next few weeks I'd say Lamela.

I'm maybe taking hit to get Jota. 1st player in my team talked him up all pre season after watching in championship last season then he did nothing and fell off my radar. Been threatening to take hit to remove Patricio for weeks. Double Wolves defence doing my head in

The trouble is that there isn't a clear alternative to Patricio unless you upgrade to Allison or DDG. With Wolves' fixtures I think I'd keep hold and wait till the BGW/DGW picture becomes clearer. Newcastle, Hudds, Cardiff in the next 6 and the other games aren't the toughest either. There surely have to be some CS opportunities there?

A question I asked yesterday and thinking about it AMEY is probably right.
Eye candy value and Auba likes to play him. Emmery is the problem and at over 9 mil you want him to get guaranteed minutes.
It would make a few mil come in handy over Auba though.
