West Ham did not have to be at their best to beat Fulham on the opening night of Blank Gameweek 27.

With the Hammers not particularly impressing there was a lot of disappointment for a large number of Fantasy managers who had invested in their assets.

Fulham’s defensive problems continue to undermine their season, and may have been the key reason for West Ham’s 3-1 win, assessed in this latest Scout Notes article.

West Ham United 3-1 Fulham

Goals: Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (£6.1m), Issa Diop (£4.3m), Michail Antonio (£6.8m)

Assists: Angelo Ogbonna (£4.2m), Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m), Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m)

Felipe Anderson (£7.2m) disappointed his 290,000+ new owners in Gameweek 27 as he blanked for the seventh time in his last eight Premier League outings. Only Son Heung-min (£9.0m) earned more interest in the transfer market this week as Fantasy managers were attracted by a decent run of fixtures, including one in Blank Gameweek 31, and starting with the visit of Fulham to the London Stadium.

However, it was an uninspiring performance for Anderson and the majority of his colleagues as they continued to labour at attacking in open play. There were two individuals who were able to outshine Anderson as Michail Antonio (£6.8m) finished the match with more shots and more efforts in the box than any other player on the pitch. While Anderson was largely signed for his creativity ahead of Gameweek 27, Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m) played more than double the number of key passes than the Brazilian, whose delivery from free-kicks was consistently poor all evening.

Ultimately, it was another match in which Fulham were the masters of their own downfall, rather than being completely opened up by the Hammers. The Cottagers conceded both first-half goals from some awful defending at set-pieces, while their defence was all at sea for a late third strike for Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

“We never thought it would be easy before the game. Teams fighting relegation always make it hard. We had to have high pace to beat this team. We started so so bad. After those ten strange minutes, we dominated the game.” – Manuel Pellegrini

For the equaliser, Snodgrass ball into the box was initially headed up in the air but Antonio rose up to head it towards goal. It then cannoned off Angelo Ogbonna (£4.2m) before Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (£6.1m) bundled home at the back post unchallenged.

Issa Diop (£4.3m) was completely unmarked when he rose to head Snodgrass’ corner into the net shortly after. Late in the second half, Antonio was given all the time in the world to nod a Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) cross beyond goalkeeper Sergio Rico (£4.4m).

The fact that West Ham, who have struggled offensively in recent weeks, could not get back to the ruthless free-flowing attacking football they showcased a few months ago even at home against Fulham is certainly a concern. In the four matches prior to Blank Gameweek 27, West Ham were bottom of the league for shots inside the box, and 19th for shots on target.

There were some statistical improvements in these areas for the Hammers, even if the chances created weren’t particularly clear cut. Their 20 shots in the box was more than their total for all four of the matches prior to Blank Gameweek 27, and their seven efforts on target also eclipsed their total in that department over the same period. In that sense, it was definitely a deserved win for West Ham, but how much of that was down to their own attacking prowess remains to be seen, considering how poor Fulham were.

There are other reasons to be encouraged about the Hammers though as Arnautovic’s substitute appearance in the second half appeared to improve their goal threat. He had the most clear-cut chance of the game, firing an effort from the right towards goal, only to see Rico tip it onto the bar with a wonderful one-handed save.

Also, there was a long-awaited comeback for midfielder Manuel Lanzini (£6.4m) who has been out of action with an injury picked up in the World Cup Argentina training camp. He did not offer a tremendous amount in his cameo appearance but having him back in the side certainly gave the home support a lift. Lanzini offered plenty of value as a mid-price midfielder last season and if he can get back to his best could be a powerful differential (owned by 0%) when the FA Cup-induced Blank Gameweeks roll around.

“Manuel has worked very hard over the last two weeks. He demonstrated to me that he was not afraid of playing again and he did very well.” – Manuel Pellegrini

West Ham continued to disappoint Fantasy managers who were invested in their defence. The Hammers started the game much the worse side, with Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) gifting Fulham a chance in the early moments. Thankfully for the home side, Ryan Babel (£5.5m) was unable to get the ball past Lukasz Fabianski (£4.7m) when really he should have scored. Moments later he did, converting Ryan Sessegnon‘s (£6.0m) cross. That means West Ham still have just two clean sheets at home this season, against Arsenal and Chelsea. Every other side who has come to the London Stadium, including any that are outside the top six have been able to score against them. Fabianski continues to soften the blow though, picking up at least one save point for the 11th successive match.

“You never know the reason (why we started so poorly) but maybe there was a distraction in that moment. The important thing was that we change the attitude in that moment.” – Manuel Pellegrini

There may be some light at the end of the tunnel of West Ham’s defensive woes. There was an update on the fitness of Fabian Balbuena (£4.3m) after the full-time whistle. The Paraguayan has been out with a knee injury since Gameweek 18.

“I suppose next week Fabian Balbuena could be back again.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Meanwhile, Fulham looked quite dangerous in the opening exchanges but proved once again that the performance of their attacking assets are too closely linked with the state of their defence. Not for the first time this season, the Cottagers looked to lose all momentum when conceding sloppy goals. Babel, who was Fulham’s top shooter for the match, even referenced this in his post-match interview, explaining that the “spirit” of the attacking players was being drained by poor defending. It certainly does not sound like a happy dressing room as their survival hopes continue to dwindle. The 61 goals they have conceded this season is the most of any side in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

“We suffered on the left flank and on set plays. It was a real big pity the referee was covered for the handball by Chicharito. I hope they will be better next season.” – Claudio Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri was clearly not happy with what he saw from his side in the opening 45 minutes at the London Stadium. He lined his team up in a 4-4-1-1 formation but pulled off Sessegnon and Jean Michael Seri (£4.9m) at half-time. Whether those two players hold their places in the squad remains to be seen, given the strength of Ranieri’s post-match quotes. Andre Schürrle (£5.5m), who missed the game with a virus, may come back in for Gameweek 28.

“I try to put more physical (into the midfield) with Anguissa in the middle to help Joe Bryan with Antonio. With Markovic to close an attack very well. Sessegnon in the first half he lost a lot of balls.” – Claudio Ranieri

West Ham United XI (4-1-4-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Diop, Zabaleta (Fredericks 45′); Rice, Noble; Anderson (Lanzini 75′), Antonio, Snodgrass; Chicharito (Arnautovic 63′).

Fulham XI (4-4-1-1): Rico; Bryan, Ream, Nordtveit, Odoi; Sessegnon (Marković 45′), Seri (Zambo Anguissa 45′), Chambers, Cairney; Babel; Mitrović.

    Hi Managers!

    GW31- Good plan?

    From GW27:
    Fab
    Pereira Doh Robbo
    Salah Pogba Son Jota
    Rashford Auba Llorente

    Subs: Button, AWB, Camarasa, VVD

    GW27: Digne to Pereira
    GW29: Auba to Higuain
GW30: Rash Jota to Vardy Fraser
GW31: Llorente Son Pogba to Wilson Anderson Haz (-8)

And team in 31 will ne:

    Fab
    Pereira VVD Robbo
    Salah Fraser Anderson Haz
    Higuain Vardy Wilson/King

Having no Kun in next 3 games disturbes me more than the -8 as I think most people will need to take -4 or -8 in the following GWs

      We have 11 common player's.
      10 from starting lineup.
I'm also thinking about 2 options:
      A.
      Auba - Higuain (gw29)
      Jota - Fraser
      Kamara - Barnes

      B
      Auba - Kun (28)
      Kun- Higuain
      Jota- fraser
      Kamara to Barnes

      Fraser+Higuain could be Hazard+Wilson

Anyone like me still switching between chip strategies? I was considering either...

    A) Prepare for BGW31, FH DGW32
    B) FH BGW31, Prepare for DGW32 (/if feeling unprepared I would WC)

I was set on A but that Anderson performance yesterday and the fact the Man U and Wolves double 32 have been confirmed has made be change my mind again. I'm also completely stuck in the middle when looking at how prepared my team is for either strategy. If I've worked this out correctly I currently have 7 GW31 players and up to 7 GW32 double players (Aubameyang is the odd one blanking and then no DGW32). I guess the only risk with B is so many of the DGW32 fixtures aren't officially confirmed yet. Thoughts?

Oh yeah GW33 is a good point. To be honest, I don't like having less than 11 in any week. I always think getting 11 players on the pitch is something you should try to do. You're guaranteeing yourself 0 points from a non starter - I'd always rather take the gamble but I know where you're coming from - the quality is low.

I've been making the point that people not seeing wood for trees with obsession with having 11 and fell for it myself before deadline. Said I wouldn't take hit for AWB but Kosc injury as well and thought Snodgrass might be benched meant 8 players. Rice 2pts meant -2 loss and 4.6m AWB sold for 4.3m. Wish I went with less players

City, Brighton could lose in fa cup. (I know it's not that great probably but still it's not 0)
Your plan could go into shambles if this happens.

So FH 32 on deadline day with complete team news + starting probabilities could be gold !

Oh yes same! Preparing for GW31 now probably means losing the likes of Pogba, Rashford, Jiminez and Doherty over the net few weeks. You not worried about losing value, especially because you'll probably want these players back at some point (even just for the DGWs)? We have little choice I guess?

Same here and currently on 60% FH31. Even if fixtures are not rearranged in 32, you’ll still have WC and other chips to replan. In case of FH32, if the fixtures are not rearranged in 32, you’ll lose gw31 points unnecessarily! Does it make sense?

He's a streaky player with real quality when he's up for it. As a long suffering fan, West Ham (and Everton, Newcastle etc.) have to take chances on these types of players as their marquee signings. Payet was amazing, but his history was very hot and cold.
Anderson will come good again in at least one or two of the next 3-4 games.

The decision to get a west ham mid in was based on the next 5 fixtures not just last nights. Not upset or trying to justify anything, just venting and stimulating a converstion about him, other West Ham options and the team in general.

Just a minor correction for the article, Balbuena is 4.2 (not 4.3).

Ogbonna...I remember owning him last year where he got like 10 points total over 12 weeks or so. I kept him for the last DGW and he was my highest scorer with 2CS... and like 12 or 13 points.

Perhaps a controversial comment considering the group think that we should all work our way to BGW31 making transfers along the way but I’m not buying that strategy. This will mean more than likely ignoring / transferring out key players from in form teams (Man City, Man Utd, Spurs) to ensure you have coverage of some, in my opinion, mediocre teams. Surely better to keep form players

Selling bench players + one big hitter can give you 3-4 mid priced player's to field 8-9 players in gw 31/33, which is enough imo

See above with one of my discussions. From what I can gather it all comes down to how bothered you are by the blank game weeks. If you want to keep/have the "top/in form players" then it will likely mean going with less than 11 players in both blank weeks. Unless of course you take a crazy number of transfers/loss in team value.

Even if you FH31 you then have GW33 to contend with.

BGW 33 won’t be as bad as 31 because os possibly 2 more fixtures . Also WC in 33 instead of 34 can get you easy 8-9 good players

I’m focused on having 15 DGW players and a bench boost in play for one of the DGW’s. That has always been my ultimate play so I’ve worked backwards from there to achieve that.

I have a plan that doesn't involve trading out key players but means not having 11 in 31 because majority poor fixtures. I may only run with 7 and any hits will be done in 31 which may include Sterling and Aguero for Chelsea assets. Selling Sterling and Aguero now only costs me 0.1m to buy back

      Here we go again.

You don't have to remove any premium players til GW31 itself. Save 2fts for 31. Maybe take a hit too.

In the meantime you can replace your cheaper defenders.

That might well be the case but surely that depends on your team construct? Plus a lot of people on here / Twitter (and even the Scouts themselves) have already starting selling big hitters for players with a game in BGW31. That sounds like group think to me.

I'll keep Utd players as they've gained a lot of value but City assets can be moved in and out and I'm happy to cash in on Doherty and Jimi at GW30. But also don't think it's necessary to have a full 11 that week so can keep the core of a good team.

Yes same. Sterling 11.3m bought for 11.3m Aguero 11.5m bought 11.3m. Jimi Pogba Rashford selling and buying back would cost 1.5m

  18. Shiva_Destroyer

To those who are doing FH32- Have you seen how much budget impact it has on selling the likes of pogba Rashford Doherty Jimenez and city assets that one must own in next three??? You might be talking about 1.5m less when you WC them in. Only other alternative is to hold all those which makes poor 31 team. Instead FH31 and WC 33/34 looks better especially those who have all chips. So if dgw32 build up gets little wrong, you could use TC instead of BB.

Whenever you FH, there’s always one GW you’re playing blind. So why to painfully nevigate thru 31? FH31 might be better option!

    1. Amey
      • 7 Years

      Nope.
      I can bench pogba+Rash+Doherty+Son & still field 9 in gw 31 & 33.
      Sure many others can.

City asset's haven't grown in price much as compared to others. So can sell them & get them in FH 32 + avoiding bgw 33 + get back gw 34 on WC !!

You won't be able to WC33 - that will likely be a big blank week. As in City, United, Spurs (even Wolves) will likely blank. GW33 seems to be the concern. It's a great point about the value though.

If you're not not bench boosting in 35, then WC33 is perfectly viable, in fact the fixtures have been kind to that strategy

0.1 or 0.2 doesn’t matter but 1m+ does, Especially now when We would want all big hitters in WC team of dgwers and won’t be able to get most of them. I feel this is seriously underrated fact by people

I think it is a good point. If you take out some of the players who have gained a lot of value over the season for GW31 you will end up spending around £2m more getting them back. Jiminez is a good example. I may want him for a Wolves DGW. If I sell him for GW31 currently it will cost me £0.7 more to buy him back.

How are you going to lose 1.5m when you use FH in GW32 ? You are not selling tour players, you will get the same players back for GW33, that you had in GW31 at there current market value. You might loss a 0.1 or two but no way are you going to lose 1.5.

You’ll need to manage gw31 and you’ll have to sell few of pogba Rashford Jimenez Doherty Son Sterling/Aguero. Even if you sell 3 , you’ll lose 1.2+ million depending on when you bought them.

OK I see where you are coming from, however I can bench Foster, AWB, Doherty and Pogba, and transfer out Jimenez (Purchase price 6.7m), Auba (PP 11.1m) and Hojbjerg (PP 4.4m) for a combined TV loss of just 0.1m and field the team below for GW31

          Lossl
          Robertson, Luiz, Zabeletta
          Salah, Hazard, F.Andrerson, Frasar
          Firmino, Wilson, Barnes

          FOSTER, AWB, DOHERTY, POGBA

      Easy solution...don't sell them

Keep all you players you have a lot of value tied up in (for most this is Pogba, Rashford, Doherty and Jiminez)

      Bench them in GW31/33

Field 9-10 players in 31/33...it's fine, they'll be pretty low scoring weeks, and if you have 3x Liverpool players, you've got most of the points covered.

More recent acquisitions like Son or City assets can happily be sold ahead of 31/33 without losing much value, then bought back when required

Going for quality over quantity - which players are guaranteed to do well in BGWs ??

I expect mane higuain to do well and planning to get them over bits n pieces players like fanderson maddison perreira Fraser etc - thoughtss please ?

      Fabs
      Robbo, Pereira, Clyne
      Salah,Mane, Hazard/Fraser
      Barnes, Wilson/Higuain

This is what I'm looking @. Can add a defender for awb ( IF get Higuain instead of hazard can even do awb to Luiz )

      What do you think ??

Will be looking at Chelsea's results after Spurs game and decide whether tho triple up on them or not - currently own Luiz and would bring in huigauin and probably Pedro/willian rather than likes of Fraser or maddinson against Newcastle

How likely is it to have Chelsea vs Brighton in gw32 ??

As per the experts ( 😛 ) if Brighton goes into SF we can get Chelsea-Brighton match in gw32.

Triple up is too much for me though
          Hazard/Higuain + luiz enough imo

Higuain vs Hudd not enough to go on. Still think he'll be considered a flop come end of season. Open to have my mind changed in upcoming games

I thought he looked sharp in most games other than vs man united - he was getting shots on goal, making runs, providing flicks on to Pedro and barkley - gave me an impression that he is going to be a fantasy favorite - now that they have a easy run in, can judge them in next one of two games

          Agreed
Most importantly he plays centrally & hazard is playing very wide every time i watch him currently

You can get all the remaining weeks on one frame by using the arrows next to the ticker, but the DGWs obviously have to be added in yet.

I’ve had a bad season and am far behind in my mini leagues, but I still have all my chips unlike my rivals, which gives me a chance. I want to save them all for the doubles so looking for the best way through the blanks without using them. What should I prioritise? Want to save the FT for midweek.

    Ederson / Hamer
    TAA / Shaw / Digne / Doherty / AWB*
    Salah / B Silva / F Anderson / Son / Pogba
    Rashford / Jimenez / Barnes

Any advice for navigating the BGWs and DGW as ive already used my WC. Still have FH, BB and TC.

    Lloris, Button
    Robbo, Kola, Bennet, AWB, Bednarek
    Salah, Pogba, Son, Rich, Puncheon
    Aub, Jimmy, Rashford

    1ft and 2.1 itb
    It's all a bit confusing.
