Fantasy Premier League managers need not be too concerned about Manchester City’s lack of goals in Gameweek 29.

Bournemouth’s ultra-defensive tactics look to have been the reason why the Citizens’ key assets blanked at the Vitality Stadium.

We have gone over the game in some detail ahead of Manchester City’s Gameweek 30 meeting with Watford…

Bournemouth 0-1 Manchester City

Goals: Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m)

Assists: David Silva (£8.5m)

Despite heavy backing for Gameweek 29, both Sergio Aguero (£11.8m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) blanked in Manchester City’s narrow win at Bournemouth. The former was the most-captained option of the Gameweek, with 1,273,416 managers handing him the armband, while Sterling was signed by 110,000+ in the build-up to Gameweek 29.

Aguero fought off competition from a now-fit Gabriel Jesus (£9.9m) to play 89 minutes and was admittedly unlucky not to come away with attacking returns after he struck the crossbar in the second half. Meanwhile, how the match played out didn’t really suit Sterling. The way Bournemouth set themselves up meant that he was only really a threat on the rare occasions that they ventured out and left space for him to exploit with his pace. In the end, the popular options were outshone by differential Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m).

Owned by just 1.8% of Fantasy managers, the Algerian was top for shots in the box at the Vitality Stadium despite only entering the fray at half-time. No player recorded more shots on target than Mahrez at Bournemouth either. Aguero and Sterling both had the same number of accurate efforts as him, but the former Leicester man was still more threatening in the 18-yard-box.

“It’s so important for (Mahrez), the first one for the team. He has to know he has to compete with Bernardo [Silva] and [Raheem] Sterling, he has to be ready. If he is positive and thinks ‘okay my time is going to come’ then his time is going to come because there are a lot of games. I have no doubts about his quality, his mentality is aggressive but he has to understand where he is: a team that got 100 points and every single game fights and runs and plays, and the people in front are one of the most important players of last season in Leroy, the best player in the league in Bernardo and an incredible player in Raheem.” – Pep Guardiola

Crucially, no Manchester City player left Dorset with an expected goals (xG) score higher than 0.26 on Saturday afternoon. Despite their total of 23 shots, Guardiola’s outfit managed a team xG score of just 1.19. Those statistics were a testament to some heroic defending from Bournemouth as they stuck virtually every player behind the ball.

“We were pleased, overall, with how we defended. We had to answer a few questions from Wednesday against Arsenal. We pride ourselves on being organised and giving everything to every match without allowing our standards to drop. We gave everything today and our young back three did really well considering their ages and lack of experience. They produced some good performances individually and collectively that kept us in the game.” – Eddie Howe

We should perhaps not be too surprised that the Cherries kept things tight in Gameweek 29. There was naturally plenty of interest in Manchester City attacking options after seeing Arsenal beat Eddie Howe’s side 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium last week. That meant Bournemouth had lost nine away matches in a row by an aggregate score of 28-4. However, their record at home has been in stark contrast to that for some time.

In fact, in the four home matches prior to Saturday afternoon, the Cherries were one of the better teams in the league defensively. Only four sides conceded fewer penalty box shots than them in that sample and just three allowed fewer big chances. Bournemouth were also unbeaten at the Vitality Stadium from Gameweek 29 until the weekend just gone and had recorded two clean sheets in their last three outings there prior to the Manchester City meeting.

After the visit of the defending champions, no club had more representatives among the top 10 defenders for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) in Gameweek 29. The most impressive in this area was Jack Simpson (£3.8m), who was making his first appearance of the season in the absence of the injured Steve Cook (£4.4m). Despite playing just 83 minutes, his CBI score was the highest in the match, with Chris Mepham (£4.5m) and Nathan Aké (£5.0m) both scoring 12.

For all of the above reasons, Fantasy managers should be aware of what the Bournemouth defence is capable of at home. The next three sides to travel to the Vitality Stadium are Newcastle, Burnley and Fulham so there could even be a case for signing one of their defensive options. Artur Boruc (£4.0m) has now started the last seven matches in a row and could prove a useful goalkeeper to rotate with, considering his price. If Simpson keeps his place with Cook out injured, a starting £3.8m defender could also prove an excellent budget enabler.

More relevant perhaps is the fact that Newcastle players are being considered for Blank Gameweek 31, but based on Bournemouth’s performance on Saturday, the Magpies will have to work very hard to score at the Vitality Stadium. That said, a meeting between the Cherries and Newcastle might see Howe take a more attacking approach than he did against Manchester City, and therefore allow more space for their opponents.

In Gameweek 29, Bournemouth did not register a single effort on goal for the first time in their short Premier League history. That was a natural cause of such a deep deployment of their assets. According to the club’s official Twitter account, Howe set out a 4-5-1 formation, with Aké in central midfield, but in reality, he was the third centre-back alongside Mepham and Simpson. Against lesser opposition, we might see more from their attacking assets, as David Brooks (£5.0m) made his first appearance Gameweek 24, while Callum Wilson (£6.3m) is reportedly closer to a return.

“Their technical level is so high. We were waiting for mistakes, for them to force passes and get frustrated and they didn’t. They kept doing the right, simple things, which meant that our chances to attack in the game were limited. It’s that control that made it very difficult for us to get a foothold on the game in any way. Even when we tried to change things in the last 20 minutes and apply pressure it never really happened.” – Eddie Howe

Obviously, Bournemouth’s tactics played a large part in Manchester City’s latest clean sheet, but after a barren spell earlier this season, the defending champions have now kept six in their last eight. The shutout recorded at the Vitality Stadium was the fourth in a row, restoring some faith in Ederson (£5.6m) as a set-and-forget goalkeeper. The Blank in Gameweek 31 is something of a spanner in the works, but the upcoming schedule could still see him offer value. Watford (home), Fulham (away) and Cardiff (home) are three of the next four opponents, who look to have great clean sheet potential for Manchester City.

Whether that can be covered with defensive options remains hard to say. Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m) missed a second match in a row at Bournemouth and is not expected back until the end of the month. Meanwhile, John Stones (£5.2m) overcame his fitness doubts to start in Dorset but was withdrawn amid further concerns over his groin. Vincent Kompany (£5.2m) was his replacement but Guardiola admitted that at kick-off, Stones felt better than him, so the Belgian’s place in the side is not assured either. Oleksandar Zinchenko (£4.7m) made his third start in a row, but Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is reportedly close to a return. Nicolas Otamendi (£6.0m) has now started four of the last five though, and Kyle Walker (£6.4m) seven of the last eight.

“Stones felt better than Vinny, that’s why I played John. His groin felt a little bit tight and we didn’t take a risk. Now we have one long week and hopefully, it can recover.” – Pep Guardiola

Meanwhile, Fantasy managers may be able to take advantage of another injury to Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m). Guardiola said the Belgian would be “out for a while” which may see Bernardo Silva (£7.5m), recently enjoying time on the flanks of attacking midfield, drop back into the central midfield trio, as he did at the start of the season. That would obviously reduce competition for places in the front three, good news for Leroy Sané (£9.4m), who was an unused substitute at Bournemouth. Sterling may still have to fight off Mahrez for his place in the side but Bernardo coming out of the equation in his position may be good for the England international too.

“Kevin will be out for a while with a muscular problem – hamstring. It’s normal. We played 25 games in 93 days I think. It means every three days and a little bit more we play one game so it’s a physiological issue. We demand these guys play that way every three days when the body is not always recovered. Sometimes, the muscles say ‘hello, it’s enough’. Everybody is committed and we wait for Kevin to come back.” – Pep Guardiola

Bournemouth XI (5-4-1): Boruc; Daniels, Aké, Simpson (Ibe 83′), Mepham, Clyne (D Rico 83′); Fraser, Surman, Brooks (Mousset 75′), A Smith; King.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Zinchenko, Otamendi, Stones (Kompany 48′), Walker; D Silva, Gündogan, De Bruyne (Mahrez 45+2′); Sterling, Aguero (Jesus 90′), B Silva.

  3. Are we overthinking our captains?

    Good day all.

A simple question for us all today. Are we overthinking our captains?

You spend loads of time reading the captaincy articles and comments, you scour the members' area for big chances conceded, shots on target, team attacking stats, XGs etc. You maximise your pool of possible haulers and pick the odd differential when he has a plum gameweek You take your superior knowledge and your flexible squads and you boost your points tally as a result.

But can you be sure of that?
I think I have a rough and ready statistical "answer".

I started with the medium-sized assumption that we could have known at the start of the season that Salah and Aguero would be pretty much top picks - which seems reasonable - and simply totted up the scores to be gained from picking as your captain the best* fixture on paper for the captaincy each week since the start of the season.

If you had done so, you would have scored, I calculate, 488 points from the captaincy (after doubling). That's not even the best possible score to be had from this player combination, just the score from the best fixture.

**So let's call this 488 the baseline**

Despite having a full squad of good players to choose from, and almost constantly owning Salah, if not Aguero (my big downfall this season) and studying the form and defensive stats every week, I have only managed to score 386 points from my captains. That's over 100 points off a total which should in theory be really easy to attain with very little planning at all.

Here's the fascinating thing. EVEN THE CURRENT FPL LEADER IS ONLY BEATING THE BASELINE BY TWO POINTS! That's one BAP or a yellow card one way or another. You could have an almost identical captain score to the current FPL leader with little or no captain planning week to week.

So, I would encourage you to look up your captaincy score here:...

    https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/report/index.php

...and post it below. For some reason the website is showing captaincy as an odd number but I am rounding down by one.

I would be interested on whether you managed to beat the baseline of 488, and what your thoughts are on your results this season. I would be especially interested to know if you are one of the many who has owned both Salah and Aguero for some, or ideally most/all of the season, and if you were able to beat the baseline, what do you think you have done differently?

I would also like to hear from the 'differential captainers' this season so far. Those who like to pick the odd defender or, say Jimenez vs Cardiff 🙂 My theory is that you guys might be way down on the average but let's see.

I hope this results in a useful discussion!

    Cheers,

MGA aka "Make Arrows Green Again"

*I have gone for the home fixture except on the very rare occasion where a really good away fixture has presented itself (Huddersfield for example) which I believe we would all have selected. Whilst the fixtures started off alternating, which made it easier, they phased in and out later on. It's a slightly subjective method but I think it's a reasonable model of what most of us would have done.

Interesting. I know my captains have been poor this season.

Reminds me of an article I read about fund managers in the US.

A Harvard study proved conclusively that even the top fund managers over time always lost out versus a passive "dumb" tracker fund

Interesting, yes I have recently started dabbling in investment and the advice seems to be to go for passive funds.

While this is true, the reason behind the apparent decrease in performance among top fund managers is due to "performance chasing behaviour" by clients, and not a decrease in "skill" on the part of the manager. It simply becomes too difficult to outperform the benchmark as your assets under management (AUM) grow. Read Berk and Green (2004) if you want to check out the rationale. It's a very interesting (albeit a bit dense) insight into herd behaviour and how we're programmed to chase past results, very applicable to the FPL world as well.

Most clients simply want to minimise correlation to the markets (beta), their main measure of risk, rather than prioritising significant outperformance of market indices. Especially in light of the Big Crash. That's my understanding of it anyway.

I remember about 6/7 years ago I experimented with Lampard as captain every single gameweek come hell or high water. I kept a log of who I would captain if I hadn’t imposed the Lampard rule on myself and I did better by about 100 points over the season. I think I finished a (fairly typical for me) 10k ish.

So from that one very small sample I concluded that you can beat your own second guessing my picking a top drawer option who is on penalties and starts almost every game. So naturally I haven’t done that since and I am irritated by my own stupid choices most weeks!

If you had captained the highest scoring player in the game week in week out you'd have scored 396pts so just shot of a 100 off the 'baseline' total, i.e. not a great tactic this season.

493, I think it's an odd number because I triple captained Aguero when he got 17 points.
I would say the baseline should be double the highest player score which is Salah 396.
Very happy with this number as it is better than captaining Salah each week (despite owning him from week 1).

Ah that explains the odd number! So if we take triple captain out of it, which I have done by default, the gap gets even greater O_o

My one point deduction was therefore accurate because I TDed Sané for his 1pt. This season really has been a joy..

I think the reason for my baseline is that we do like to have a bit of choice with the captains. Most do a bit of rotation even if it's not the FFS level of tinkering and trying to be too clever 🙂

If it helps i think I've only ever captained Salah, Aguero, Auba and Hazard.
I've owned Salah all season and my choice of second premium player has depended mainly on covering captaincy when Salah had a bad fixture.
I've never owned more than two premium players at a time because I think they only justify their price when you have them as captain.

I think that's a good tactic, I've mostly had three premiums: Salah, Hazard and Aguero/Auba and the extra choice seems to have backfired:
            Salah/Aguero - 21 gws/330pts, Kane/Auba/Hazard/Sterling/Sane - 8 gws/58pts

Probably best to commit to two (c) and rotate on fixtures.

I wonder if this is skewed by Kane. He started the season as the second most valuable player and until his injury was up with Kun. Until that point there were 3 options for the no brainer selection - less binary than it seems now

A respectable 451 - boosted by TC Kun.

By the way I get that there is an element of captain hindsight in this. It could easily have been Salah/Kane (which I can work out too). But both Salah and Aguero were in most teams in August, and both had nicely dovetailed (H)/(A) fixtures, so it makes sense to me at least.

Yeah that's a really good OR. You may have poor captain points because you have more money invested elsewhere, strengthening the team overall.

Just gut, but did luck into picking Son back in Nov just as he went on his crazy run, plus Sterling for periods when his ownership was low and he was hauling. So there have been isolated moments of success, captain picking not being one of them! 😆

Picking Aguero and Salah might be skewing things, especially since Kane was more expensive than Aguero and Lukaku was also up there in the premium price bracket.

Basically Agueros's four monster hauls coincide nicely with Salah not getting hauls -- the 18 pt difference in gw2 seems too early in the season to say they were the obvious pairing, for example.

Salah and Aguero were my captains for the first 5 game-weeks, till my misjudged wildcard in GW6.
I should have stuck with them at least till Aguero's injury in GW14, and just taken a hit in GW6 to get Hazard in for Mane instead.

Kane was one of the players I deliberately avoided in my initial selection because of his involvement in the latter stages of the World Cup.

There is a simple flaw to this model. Hindsight.

We now know that the 2 best captain options this season are Aguero & Salah. But we didn't know that at the beginning of the season. We may have been able to guess that Salah would be one of the best 2 captaincy options. But the other? Kane? De Bruyne? Hazard? Sanchez? Lukaku? Aubameyang? Sterling? were all legitimate options for the best captaincy option at the beginning of the season.

The previous season Salah was the standout option. Captaining Salah for every game probably produced a better score than the combination that any FPL player picked themselves. However, nobody would have predicted that at the beginning of the season.

It is easy in FPL to look back at a season and see simple solutions. But not so easy to do this at the beginning of the season. Some of the Aguero hauls have come in games he was a rotation risk. Also, they have come in games vs Big 6 teams. How did we know he would haul against these teams? Captaining Salah against big 6 teams would have brought you a poor score this season. It would have brought you an excellent score last season.

I am sorry but this tool is largely meaningless as it relies on cherry picking information given the benefit of hindsight.

This is untrue. Aguero was likely to be rotated with Jesus. Kane had won the golden boot. The most likely combination would have been Kane and Salah. The previous season the most likely top scoring combination was likely to be Lukaku and Hazard. Price is the best indication of perceived points at the beginning of the season.

But nobody started the season with Kane. By the time he returned it was quickly clear that he was not playing in the same role for the team as last season, diminishing his value as a pick.

But the same was clear of Salah too. Doesn't your whole point rely on the fact that these things are clear before the season starts? If you are allowed to react to incoming information, then that's just picking and choosing captains, buying and selling, based on form (aka 'overthinking')?

Broadly true... I suppose I keep going back to the argument that they are the two players most of us had at the start. That's why I chose them for this little study really. Salah was fit, fresh and nailed, Kane needed a bit longer so we waited. So most of us had Salah/Kun. I didn't have Kun for precisely the reason cited by Demel above - I was wrongly concerned about the impact of Jesus.

It does, however, appear that some people who started the season with both and have kept both throughout (or not even) might have done better if they had held them both and just capped them. The fixture rotation was pretty extraordinary for ages.

Salah was far from fresh, and he had a lot of doubt cast over him from his World Cup woes, which to this day, it seems he hasn't shaken (at least in my eyes, he looks dejected). Kane has been pretty much matching him toe to toe when he hasn't been injured. And that's discounting Lacazette, Aubameyang, Hazard, Sterling, Mane, Alonso, Mendy, who were all looking like great captaincy options at points in the first 5 GWs or so. The point being that nothing was close to being clear imo.

I also think your way overplaying the combined ownership of Aguero and Salah. You, youself, weren't on of the owners of both, and besides, the popularity of an option isn't much of an argument for it's effectiveness in the curent or future seasons. What's obvious to one man, isn't obvious to another, clearly 🙂

I did indeed skip Aguero, and I'm a very good manager ( 🙂 ). To be fair it's because I hate 'transfers waiting to happen'. Others might not have so many qualms.

Can't argue with your posts though. Keep holding me to account! I still hope that the original post is more useful than unhelpful - It suggests to me that you probably don't need to worry too much about clever captain picks. If in doubt, the obvious choice, ideally at home, *should* do the job. Only "should" though, because it's 2018-19 and because #FMFPLL.

Laca v Auba has typified my season - always had the wrong one at the wrong time. As well as:

                        - No Aguero as discussed. Because of all those Jesus minutes that definitely came along
                        - KdB (twice) getting injured. Lucky I dodged him the third time...
                        - Keane over Digne
                        - Digne in just after he stopped doing...anything
                        - Martial over Pogba - I had been on Pogba all week before changing my mind
                        - No Son when he was burning FPL to the ground
                        - Son when he turned into a damp squib

                        There's more.. It's good to vent 🙂

Haha yes it is. I preferred Martial myself, but bought all three big guns in one just to be sure. I still have Martial jamming up my bench, and yet sold in-form Rashford to make-way for the same triple-up switch tactic with Chelsea.

My season would be lame if a player like Fraser maintained form for the whole season. It's only really Jimenez (who I owned for GW5 only) who's been stopping me having an amazing season tbh, as all his owners keep getting points for great value while I'm spending the extra for fewer points from top-6 teams haha. Spreading the no-Salah funds has otherwise been pretty successful, though not without my own tales of woe of course.

Is that (top 6 only) something you have done as a strict rule? I noticed you mentioned it before. You are showing it really can be done.

I keep going back to my 'players over 10m are poor value unless you captain them' thoughts but I am never brave enough to try it out. It might be worth having a go next season.

It's not strict, but it's generally what's occured for my team. To begin with I wanted to avoid all the riff-raff in the 5-7.0 catergory of outfield players because they were likely to have the least predictable outcomes, given the forms of their teams.

I betrayed myself a little by going for Zaha, Hughes and Sakho, but I figured they were worth it for various reasons, and soon rectified this.

Other than these players, my only players in that bracket have been West Ham players, while they were looking very attacking and with excellent long-term fixtures (though I ended up swapping them for United players not long after anyway), Jimenez (for that one gameweek before a WC), and temporarily Barkley (top 6 anyway).

The plan wasn't to stick to top-6 players all season. As more information came in, I expected to start incorporating a value players. But I've simply have enough money to continue it thanks to no-Salah and United's ressurgence. Plus targets I previously missed out on, like Fraser and Wilson, have gone quiet. Just a shame that Sane and Martial have flunked, as they could have propelled me far up the rankings, as few people have as many "heavy hitters" as me, even if they have overlaps.

The traditional way of playing the game, picking a mix of heavy-hitters and differentials, isn't applicable to every season, nor every moment of each season, so I feel I've stolen an advantage by avoiding these differentials which have failed to convince me thoroughout the season (Maddison, Richarlison, even Deulofeu I've managed to keep my hands off! haha). That said, my strategy won't be applicable orpossible every season (and it's not so much a strategy as a pattern from week-by-week decision-making, anyway). Plus, it's not like I have a massive score to boast about, so no one should listen to me anyway 😀

And by the way, I tend to agree with the poor value at the high-end rule, but the more money you spend there the more points you get, as well as the more captaincy options, so swings and roundabouts innit. If you have the money to spare, there's no point buying a cheaper player for fewer points unless you actually want to buy Salah 🙂

(Also forgot to mention that I have also owned Shaqiri for a single GW (and captained him), plus I own Kante now - so even more top-6 team players from the budget-mid-price range).

I'm convinced that the best place to spend the extra money is, first and foremost, on the best defence you can. 2m per player can make a huge difference.

Again, captain hindsight comes knocking as you don't know in advance which premium picks are going to be worth it, but a simple double up of Robertson and TAA when fit would have absolutely killed it this season.

Agree spending 3+m upgrading from fodder to unpredictable is often not worth it unless you spend the odd extra 3+m turning those infuriating players into premium picks. They're still poor value on their own but you have to spend the money somewhere and at least you can captain them.

Another thing that struck me about top 4 players is that there is more of an onus on them to win games. If it's 1-1 between City and Southampton in the 80th minute Aguero remains valuable, maybe even more so as a goal is required, whilst Ings is either subbed or rendered impotent by the manager's tactical choices.

Yeah, that mid price range led me to start last season with a 532, with 3 4.5 mids on the bench, as I saw no obvious value between 5 and 9 million, even. Though the cookie cutter strategy of picking a tiered structure led the majority to have a balanced-looking team, but with players I figured were worth no more than RLC and Tom Carroll. It worked pretty well until more info came in and I WCed to something different in GW10 (probably prematurly in hindsight as I lost 30 points that week, and perhaps more down the line).

I don't mind spending a lot on defenders, but again, I think your theory about spending more in defence is only sometimes applicable. It always depends on the individual players, and the combination within your team. If AWB is as good as Trippier, then the extra 1.0-2.0 million would be wasted, for example.

It's a major flaw, which I briefly acknowledge above, but I still think it's a useful way of thinking about our captaincy for the season so far because most of us started with Salah and Kun and, frankly, there was very little reason to deviate from an alternate pairing of these two players. It's only impatience and having the eye caught by a new shiny thing flaring up and fizzling out again (Hazard, Auba etc.) that stopped this.

Many of those who moved away from Salah and Aguero to pursue other players could have got a better score by just sticking, that's all I am saying. I think it would be a different story if it were the Vardy/Mahrez season but these aren't unheralded, unsung starlets, they are established players are premium price points who most have us have had for most of the season (not me alas! 🙂 )

Sorry for the double post - I wanted to add: besides which I bet there are other combinations of really good players which have been highly-owned which could also have provided better scores than some of our captaincy tallies. Auba / Sterling / Hazard - sure, and I can run the numbers for them. Not so much Lukaku, KdB, Sanchez IMO.

I agree hindsight can lead to a bias view, however I do think the OP makes a good point.
For example let's say I picked Hazard and Salah (most would expect both to score 200pts ish over the season), as my default captains & rotated between them based on home/easy games:

        Hazard - GW4, 5, 11, 14, 18, 21, 22, 25 = 132pts
        Salah - GW1-3, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19, 23, 24, 26-28 = 280pts

In weeks where it's harder to call let's say I defaulted to Salah (the more expensive and actually worse performing option)
        Hazard - GW7, 8, 17, 20 = 80pts
        Salah - GW7, 8, 17, 20 = 38pts

So over the season I'd have 450pts from my (c).

Good site! 395 for me that includes TC Sane 1 pointer and Pogba at the weekend. My Captain scores for each gameweek were very good until the last 9 gameweeks where nothing has really gone right . . .

480, and owned both Salah and Kun for around 80% of the season. Tend to captain either of them which falls inline with the 488 baseline and its just the odd time with captaining someone else like Pogba this week 🙁 ... even with that Pogba captain this week I saw another green arrow to an OR of 649 🙂

quite a few different sites can show you this but you can find it out via https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/league/live.php
If you put in your ID and then list leagues or just put in a league ID and click load league. Then when the player names have loaded, click on the 'Chips used' links

Capped Salah for 16 times , failled with Hazard, Sane captaincy, happy with my choices could have been slighly better, other captaincy was kane and 1 time Arnie

Their fixtures alternate really kindly for most of the season. It's not difficult to show the working behind this, and I don't think there are many controversial picks!

A tale of two halves -
242pts from first 12 GWs when I was switching between Salah and Aguero except for one week of Hazard.
152pts from next 17 GWs since then, Salah has returned 4/8 in this time but every other captain (Aguero, Auba (x3), Sterling, Hazard (x2), Sane and Pogba) tried has failed

452pts from 14 unique captains. I've never owed Salah or Kane, so my captains are cheaper than the average, and the above baseline players, too. I don't think there's a problem with overthinking. I expect that if I owned both Aguero and Salah all season, eating up my budget and flexibility (refusing to sell), then I'd be worse off right now.

Yeah that's great. And I know you have a good OR so it's working for you 🙂 I would however argue that most of us have two players of their combined value for most (if not all) of the season.

I just think it's a bit of a false generalisation. I tried the "safe" approach last season, captaining Kane for most of the first 10-15 GWs, and got practically nothing in return haha

Aye and that leads to the hindsight accusation, which I realise is a valid one. I think these two players were special because of their ownership at the start of the season and their nice fixtures, but we'll see if it works again! I will have to put my money where my mouth is and call it for 19-20 🙂

Sure, I could have done with buying Aguero a week earlier to get his hattie in GW2, but without the overthinking approach, i'd have missed out on my best captains pick, Pogba, who got my an average of 34 points from 2 games captained. And I'd have missed out on Son ans Sterling hauls, and Mane's 32pts in GW1. 🙂

      392. Feelsbadman. Definitely have overthought it a few times. If I had just kept Salah the whole year, captained him every game except when he's playing a top 6 team, I'd have like 500 captain points. Will probably do that next season especially if his H/A dovetails nicely with Aguero/Sterling.

498 for me. This season has actually felt really poor for me (feels like I've got alot of 50/50 calls wrong), so the captaincy has saved me.

I've owned Salah the whole season (and I've captained him 15 times), while I owned Aguero only from GW1-8. However, since GW9 I've owned Sterling.

I've only captained 5 players the whole season: Salah, Aguero (only once), Sterling, Kane and Son (only once for his blank in GW28).

I've generally just rotated Salah and Sterling, with a couple Kane hauls thrown in. Generally, have tried to keep it simple. I identified Sterling as a good differential captain pick early on, but I will never pick a differential for the sake of it, they must genuinely be the best option.

I think we need to know % of total score AND average captain spend. The price of your players can turn a low captain average into a decent one if you're spending the budget sensibly elsewhere.

Hi Massive Green Arrow (great name by the way),

I got 478, so 10 under the baseline 🙁 I've mainly stuck to the obvious but have had a few anomalies where I've strayed, rarely to good effect! 🙁

Is the https://www.anewpla.net/fpl/report/index.php tool your own? I have been thinking about an idea that uses a lot of similar data to this and so could be a good collaboration.

464 for me. Largely from aguero and salah. Started the season with 17 captain returns in a row. Captain has blanked in 50% of gameweeks since as I have moved the armband to the likes of Sane, Aubameyang and Hazard as well as Salah letting me down in recent weeks.

I agree that the obvious pick usually does well in most weeks. Of only I'd owned aguero during those hat trick weeks I'd be laughing right now....

      325 pts including TC Sane

      Base pts:
      Salah v whu: 8
      Salah v cpa: 9
      Salah v BHA: 8
      Aguero v NEW: 6
      Aguero v FUL: 7
      Hazard v whu: 3
      Richarlison v FUL: 3
      Kane v CAR: 1
      Aguero v BUR: 6
Sterling v tot: 6 (He became my captain after I captained Robbo v CAR who didn't play)
      Siggy v BHA: 5
      Hazard v EVE: 3
Doherty v HUD: 1 (The only time Huddersfield scored over 1 goal this season)
      Sterling v BOU: 9
      Sane v wat: 7
      Auba v HUD: 5
      Kane v BUR: 5
      Sterling v CPA: 2
      Salah v NEW: 12
      Salah v ARS: 12
      Pogba v new: 3
      Salah v bha: 11
      Salah v CPA: 15
      Salah v LEI: 2
      Sane v ARS+eve: 1 (TC)
      Salah v BOU: 8
      Son v bur: 2
      Salah v WAT: 3
      Pogba v SOU: -1

Salah has been my most reliable captain (as well as Aguero, who I didn't have for most of the season). Generally try to go for a mix of a good fixture and a somewhat in-form player - but a lot of the punts I took didn't pay off, namely:

      - Richarlison v FUL got 3 pts. Everton won that game 3-0
      - Siggy v BHA got 5 pts. Everton won that game 3-1
      - Every time I have captained Hazard in the last 3 seasons (11 times total) he has blanked, apart from one occassion where he got me an assist
      - The infamous Sane TC
      - Doherty managing to concede 2 at home to Huddersfield
      - Robertson not playing v CAR

Think that sticking with two highly reliable players like Aguero and Salah is probably the best thing you can do considering they rarely blank vs non top 6 opposition. The problem is, the season is very long, and you may limit yourself by sticking with only 1-2 players and not making any exceptions.

      1. stat
        7 years, 5 months ago

        Also worth noting:

        - My TCs have failed in 3 of the last 4 seasons.
        15/16 = Carroll 3 pts vs MUN+SWA
        16/17 = Kane 12 pts vs BOU
        17/18 = Sterling 3 pts vs HUD+BHA
        18/19 = Sane 1 pt vs ARS+eve

        - I have captained Salah 21 times since the start of 17/18 (around 31% of the total GWs since then).
He has averaged 9.6 base pts and only blanked three times (GW 17 vs WBA last season, LEI and WAT this season).

        - Salah is responsible for 404 of my 884 captain points since the start of last season (45.7%)

524 for me, rank 200k and think I’ve worked out why! Made 75 transfers, 200pts given away in hits, benched 292pts too! Found this season pretty easy for captaincy - 4 blanks Kane CAR, Sterling CPL, Salah LEI and Sterling @ bou just there - dare say if I had been slightly less trigger happy and got the benching decisions right then a mediocre season could have been great!

It’s just the way I like to play the game, aim for a perfect XI every week, gained 258 from transfers so by and large they’ve been worth it one thing I’ve learnt is always go form over fixtures - 3 weeks ago I had a 50/50 between Ricardo and schlupp - went with the fixtures and since then it’s been 2pts v 15! Still believe FPL should tweak the rules to either give 2 FTs per week or make hits a -2, would make for much more different teams this stage of the season is very boring with very similar teams and people all playing chips at the same time

516 for me. I've gone with Salah 12 times and Aguero 9 times, but got above that baseline figure by occasionally going with Kane, Hazard and Aubameyang and only getting two blanks from those three so far. It might just be the season of going with the in-form premium attacker, which has regularly been Salah and/or Aguero anyway.

538 for me. Only 4 captain blanks this season

    74. ikho

      554
      Times Points Average
      Salah 11 234 21.3
      Agüero 8 178 22.3
      Kane 6 98 16.3
      Sánchez 1 10 10
      Sterling 1 4 4
      Lacazette 1 1 14
      Higuaín 1 16 16

To be fair, it is true that captaining the safe options (Aguero, Salah and Kane) would guarantee you a high baseline and overthinking it would more often than not backfire. These three are, to me, the safe options right from the start of the season because they are deemed to be "consistent". Here's why: (1) their teams centre the play around them (especially for Aguero and Kane) (2) Aguero and Kane have been on penalties for years (3) Aguero and Kane have been proven FPL legends who CONSISTENTLY score 20+ goals a season consistently and (4) Salah's crazy outstanding season means even a 25% drop would still put him in the level of Kane/Aguero. Also, if you actually watch the Liverpool games and he had been playing centre forward from the second half of lasy season. (I must caveat that if I were to rank the three, I would place Aguero, Kane ahead of Salah by virtue of option (1) and (2), but it is only because Kane and Aguero have both been injured throughout the season which explains why I have captained Salah most of the times). These reasons are why Hazard, Sterling, KDB, Lukaku, Aubameyang cannot fall within the same bracket as the big three - they may be explosive, but they do not have most of the reasons above to be consistent enough. In other words, if you were to captain these options, you could very well score big on some weeks but truthfully you are also more likely than not to end up with 4 or 6 pointers which would set you back very much in a ML.

The next trick to getting better than the baseline is to learn how to choose within the three, which would allow you to land their double digit and hat trick hauls. I believe the mixture of (1) form of player and form of team and (2) home/away + opponent would be crucial. For form, try not to choose them when they have just gotten back from injury or if the team hasnt been playing well because how the team plays affect how many chances they would get. E.g. if you watch pool games, fpl players should have stayed away from captaining Salah as they haven't been playing well for the past couple of games. Likewise, Kane should not be captained or even brought in until Spurs fix their form. For home/away, man c and pool home fixtures are great for aguero and salah but not so for kane. For opponent, this would take a while to analyse across the season, but this should be not be assessed solely be based on league standings but rather, the performance of certain teams against the big 6. In this season, Bournemouth, Huddersfield, Fulham, Southampton and Burnley look particularly poor.

Another way to get better than the baseline (i.e. differential method) is to find the pockets where you should go against the norm of the big three, although this is something that should only be exercised when the big three do not present as good options - e.g. GW 27 captained Laca because Aguero was not playing and Salah was playing a rejuvenated Man U, GW 29 captained Higuain because Aguero is tired, Salah has not been on form and Kane was playing against a top 6 side.

      402. Mostly conservative picks when it comes to the armband - first or second in the poll.

I've been burned by ditching Salah in 15 on WC who of course then came hot. Then Aguero in his recent dgw when it was unclear if he or Jesus would start. Of course I went with Sane who was a no show.

It's just down to luck because I would make those decisions again.

I really like this post. My lack of patience/consistency has cost me a good chunk of points this season. I'd take this a step further and apply it to the risk of taking hits/transfers in general.

Say you picked a team of players expected to play every week, and made no transfers. This team would have scored 1730pts
(Salah (c) and only bothered to count AWBs autosub points):

      Ederson
      Robertson Azpiliceuta Trippier
      Hazard Salah (c) Erikssen Sigurdsson
      King Zaha Jiminez
      (Steklenburg, AWB, Bednarek, Stephens)

Obviously not making transfers at all would be dull, but maybe we overtinker with our teams & like with (c) over time lose out.

Hi all, couple of quick questions:

    1) What to do with Richarlison? he looked decent when he came on yesterday but will he get his place back in the team? Did silva say anything?

    2) Currently have both Sterling and Kun..thinking to downgrade one of them to fund Schindler >> TAA. Do we reckon both of them will start this weekend? Slightly leaning towards downgrading Aguero as i think he might be rested. If the opinion is that neither will get rested, i could still do Digne >> TAA and start Jimenez but more inclined to do Schindler >> TAA, start Digne and then bench Jimenez

    2Fts and 0.6m itb.

    Fabianski -- Button
Lascelles Digne Pereira -- Doherty Schindler
Salah Pogba Sterling Rich -- Hayden
    Jimenez King Aguero

A lot depends on your chip strategy. If you have rich you might have to keep unfortunately. If I had Jiminez I would play him. Already scored Vs Chelsea and also Vs spurs in London. Don't think he'll be intimidated. Have you considered sane? City very hard to predict. Dilva also showing good numbers and reasonable value

hey all, not a RMT or anything like that but I have a dilemma,

ive still got all my chips to play but for GM 31 I will only have 3 starters.

I was originally going to use my free hit chip to bulk up on players for that week but im now thinking it may be better to save it for a week when theres double game weeks but week 33 and 35 only have 2 teams playing twice. I read somewhere that they're going to have to reschedule a man city game so that may bump up one week but it seems like I should use it next week as every other year theres been double game weeks with 3 or 4 teams playing twice now its only 2 and week 35 both teams have crazy hard fixtures.

TLDR - when should I use my chips?

    thanks all!

Bit of a mess alright. You might have to use it. Or else take a few hits to get some low risk starters out. If you could field 7 there's a chance you could get away with it. Good luck

Is it though? Spurs haven't looked great lately and, although I didn't see the game, it appears like Soton gave Utd a good game. To be honest it probably doesn't actually matter as every decision I've made in 2019 on FFS so far has gone against me, regardless of what that decision was (namely keeping hold of Auba for this whole time)

Fair point, for now I've made the swap of Auba out to Higuain as I imagine Aubas price will drop again and also it just felt great doing so after the nightmare hes caused me. Obviously Chelsea play in Europa so I'll leave anymore in case of injuries etc *touch wood*. But I may leave the Son move till next GW.

From what I understand it's complicated.
If Brighton go through in the cup then their game with Spurs in 33, will need to be moved.
Although, even if they go out, the game with Spurs in 33 is supposed to be being played at Wembley...but the FA semis will need to be played there, so that could be an issue either way.

I have Fabianski for BGW. The first option has me getting in 2 cheapies to enable getting in Vardy. Second option gives me a bit more flexibility and another outfield player as opposed to an extra goalie.

Hits in 1st week of month don't count. It pretends it's GW1.
Really bad part of monthly leagues on FPL. Guess they don't want negative scores.

Ah OK, thanks. New qn: Do I bring it up to my mate who runs the league? I'd have thought he would already know about something like this, but seems strange that it wouldn't have been brought up before or discussed when it comes to monthly prizes.

I already won last months one although I didn't take a hit at the start of the month there so won't alter it for me!

Why does Man city have a gw33 fixture while man united hasn't?

If Man City win their FA Cup tie then even they won’t have a fixture in GW33.
