Our Rate My Team tool has been updated over the weekend and is now available to use in our Members’ Area.

Access to this feature requires membership, which is now available for the yearly price of £17.50. Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

For full details on all the benefits of membership, view this page.

Former FPL champions Tom Fenley and Simon March have said Rate My Team was a helpful tool to use in their successful seasons.

Subscribers can use the RMT feature by clicking on ‘Build My Team’ from the ‘Rate My Team’ drop-down menu.

Once the 2019/20 campaign is underway, members will be able to enter their Fantasy Premier League team ID and see what scores RMT projects for the coming Gameweek and beyond.

We will be tweaking the numbers on a regular basis over the summer as new players enter the game and pre-season friendlies reveal more to us about likely starting line-ups and tactics.

The ‘Projections’ tab will also be updated in due course.

A members-only Hot Topic has already been set up by Geoff for you to discuss your first impressions and bring to light any oddities you may discover.

The projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson (aka RMT’s Professor).

Below you’ll find an FAQ plus links to archive movies with Mark and Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

What is Rate My Team?

Rate My Team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating and every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

What are these values based on?

The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

How can it help me?

If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next ‘X’ number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort by value to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice-captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

As said above, it gives something back. Although i use none of the stats the season ticker is excellent particularly as i am now using it properly. It is also always interesting to listen to the scoutcasts, gives food for thought even though i always go with my own decision making.

Not a Villa fan, but Taylor was supposedly one of their weaker links. They have paid reasonable money for Targett so assume he is first choice. Was great on loan at Fulham year before last.

How's this? Very template, but with Kane instead of two budget forwards.

    Ryan (or Heaton), Button
    Robertson, Alonso, Digne, Walker (4.0)
    Salah, KDB, Zaha, Perez (4.5)
    Kane, King (Wickham)

My bench is my biggest concern. Could go Alonso -> Azpi or Walker -> Zinchenko to do an upgrade.

I just think VVD is a better pick than Alonso at least for now

You could maybe go for a 6.5 striker and get a 4.5 in for Perez.

    1st attempt:

    Ryan
    VvD | Laporte | Diop | Aarons
    Salah | Sterling | Zaha | Yarmolenko
    Aguero | Ings

    Button | Aarons | Dendoncker | Long

Pretty happy with the 6 of VvD, Laporte, Salah, Sterling, Aguero & Ings. Unsure on the makeup of the rest really. VAR making Zaha a lot more appealing to me.

Madisson for me isn't a great pick with the leicester fixtures

i like it but i think this is the year jesus will break into starting 11, wich is going to limit agueros minutes. If you are gonna go with one big hitter upfront its kane for me. 11 million for him could be a bargain, but in the end i think we cant go without sterling.

I do like the look of that tbh mate.
All players are those that could do very well but some that are the less-trodden path and possibly have question marks if they are worth the punt over the popular choices (e.g. Zinchenko, Maddison, KDB vs Kun/ Sterling)

Personally think a Vardy Maddi double up is overkill and you should spread the risk as LEI are un unknown entity under Rodgers for now

Just different manager, so different style may have an impact but I still expect Maddison and Vardy to score well in FPL terms - it's just whether it would be 'more well' than some of the alternatives

Leicester thrive under bad fixtures- Maddison most likely to go with Zaha, Willian and Pulisic snooping.

Has anyone ever done an analysis to investigate how accurate RMT is? It's a very addictive tool to play with but I'm pretty sure fairly irrelevant in terms of estimating points scored.

    1. Don Kloppeone
      • 8 Years
      7 years, 21 days ago

I haven't done any analysis but based on last 2 seasons at least I found it was useful for relative comparisons rather than absolute returns. By that I mean that the total points per GW and player didn't end up being very close to reality (often pitched it much lower) but it helped to see what team/ player might do better in a comparison and to see a nice ticker-type view of potential performance

    2. Markus
      • 16 Years
      7 years, 21 days ago

It's iterative so hard to judge at any single point, but iirc it would have pointed to Hazard and Mane being good picks, pogba and vardy offering value, and a big back line being a good option, so if you'd used it intelligently you'd have benefitted. It's as good as it's inputs and therefore largely historical but also particularly good at putting actual objectively created numbers to 'great run of fixtures' / rotation options etc. which is otherwise just pretty random or a 1-5 rank on a ticker.

It’s impossible to estimate but it does a much better job then Eliteseriens effort of “estimated points next round” - it’s dire.

It’s not a feature I am interested in having, it’s like have a computer play, I like to make decisions myself and not be influenced by these sort of systems.

It's not really a predictive tool, more of a transfer planner to spot gaps in your squad in the next 6 weeks.

If you know you're going to need to a certain transfer on GWx, you can make sure you're in a position to make it when the time comes.

So this template-tastic lot is shaping up for 62.5 points in GW1. How do other people's current drafts compare and any glaring problems you see apart from the obvious weakness of the bench?

Very similar to mine indeed, and I do like it. I myself was also wondering about Kun and Sterling of course, and you and I took different paths. Still, it is very much a toss up at this point.

I really like your team, good luck!

As mentioned above you are following the same thought process as me and I def think it's a toss-up pre-season between going Kun or Sterling

        Good luck!

While we're at it, which of these trios would score more?

    A. Ryan, Siggy, Kun
    B. Ryan, Sterling, Jimenez
    C. Ederson, Sterling, Deulofeu

JWP as he improved a lot under Ralph. Not sure other than that. You'd probably want to free up 0.5 and get Perez/Redmond/Brooks.

personally i dont understand the yarmolenko hype. Imo theres no options under 7 only brooks. Its a wait and see.

    5. Probably some will emerge during/after pre-season.

I'm keeping an ye on Barkley during pre-season. With the injuries to RLC and CHO he might come in handy in the first couple of gameweeks.

6.7% with Pukki. This could end up going very well for them.

    Very bad too.

It looks like he and Norwich will struggle early doors.

If he does, then a lot of early rank damage could be done to his owners which will take time to recover from.

Pretty pleased with my first draft. Thoughts folks?

    Allison
    Robertson, AWB, Laporte
    Salah, B.Silva, Zaha, Perez
    Rashford, Jimenez, Wilson

Bench: Button, Targett, Kelly and Dendoncker

    1. Fulchester's New Centr…

      Too much Utd
Allison in goal waste of a Liv spot (try to get a second Liv defender instead)
Bilva perhaps not best use of 8 mill.

If you answer/comment on a few of other people's points (there is no right answer if that is what you are worried about) they are more inclined to help you in return.

    Heaton | Ryan
    VvD | Laporte | Diop | Aarons | Bednarek
    Salah | Sterling | Zaha | Yarmolenko | Dendoncker
    Aguero | Ings | 4.5m

Still toying with 3rd & 4th midfielders, any thoughts? One option is:

    Zaha & Yarmolenko > Siggy & Noble

salah sterling and aguero is too much

      1. Reckoner.

I'm pretty set on those 3. In the analysis I've done over the years premium strikers are very rarely worth it with a couple of exceptions. Aguero is more often than not one of those exceptions. He's also a captain option vs anyone which makes his value to my squad pretty much double.

Salah and Sterling have both proven their value over the last couple of Seasons, Sterling just gets better and better and Salah, even with a poorer Season last year, was still value come the end of the Season.

The analysis I've done also shows that there is more value in expensive Midfielders vs Strikers and the points ceiling is at its highest for Midfielders.

So those 3 are a no brainer for me.

Possible downside of Yellow & Red cards for simulation though.
