The third instalment of the Fantasy Football Scout Charity Cup is now less than three weeks away and already around 40 players have signed up to play. But we want more of you!

Following the success of the first two competitions in February and November 2018, which featured around 80 players and raised over £2,000 for the Melanoma Research Foundation and for Campaign Against Living Miserably, this time we’ll be raising money for the Stroke Association.

Most of you will know that Joe, a much-loved member of FFS and the wider Fantasy Football community, recently suffered a bleed on his brain. Thankfully, after a fairly hellish month, he is gradually returning to normal.

The Charity Cup will be held in the morning of Sunday 28 July 2019 at Whittington Park Astro Pitch in London linked heremeeting at 9:15 am to finalise teams etc.

The full address is Holloway Road, Islington, London N19 4RS. The closest Tube station is Archway on the Northern Line (8min walk) and the closest London Overground station is Upper Holloway (2min walk).

As always, the precise format (including squad sizes) will depend on numbers but everyone will get decent game-time in a 7 or 8 aside format.

This is real-life football (not an FPL online cup!) with players of all ages, fitness and abilities very welcome.

As with previous tournaments, we’ll be organising players into squads, so you don’t need to round up a team yourself, although feel free to invite guest players to boost the numbers.

If you would like to take part please email peter.kouwenberg76@gmail.com with your contact details and you will be added to the WhatsApp group for further information (unless you state that you would rather receive information by separate email only).

Even if you are not able to play, please donate to the Stroke Association at the Just Giving page which is linked here.

What are people’s thoughts on this set up 343..

    Pope/4.0
    Robbo/VVD/Digne/4.0/4.0
    Salah/Siggy/Sterling/Fraser/4.5
    Delafeou/King/Jota

I really like it. Would personally have Tielemans/premium defender instead of Jota/Deu due to fixtures but it looks good

No. If his 4.5 Mid is Donkers at least he has a sub who can get a point or two. With a 4.5 striker to go with his 4.0s he's got nothing to come off the bench at all.

Repost of a bottomed post because I think this merits discussion:

Kanté's points per match average for last season was better than Mata, Noble, Knockaert, Sanchez..

    *and KdB*

That's not points per match per million, that's points scored on average per game played. I know KDB was injured for much of the season and maybe wasn't in form or at peak fitness in the games he did play, and he got a couple of 1-2 pointers in the games he started and came off injured... but still - is he really worth 9.5m?

Factor in a little bit of midfield competition from the likes of Rodri (I know he plays defensively but KdB played deep a lot last season) and I am not convinced by him at all. Of course, the signing of Rodri may give KdB more freedom to push up but he will need an amazing pre-season for me to consider him.

I have just found a way to go from KDB to Sterling cause I do think there is still a bit of uncertainty with him due to the injuries. If he shows the form of two seasons ago I will bring him back in but right now I think it is safer to wait and watch with KDB.

I will be monitoring him but a lot needs to change. It's odd to think that if you had Kanté and KdB for the games they were both fit you would have scored more points if you had played the former and benched the latter!

I'm currently looking at the same move. I like KDB and I want KDB, but the boring and sensible FPL option is to get Sterling. Likely going to downgrade my Everton mid spot.

how many points you think KDB needs to get to be value for money...around 180-190 maybe or even more?

price wise, the only other 2 players at 9.5 are Son and Sane.

Because you would be unlikely to captain him regularly, I think you would actually need him to score more than 200 points. I agree that there are not many options in the 9-10m range, which is why I think you need to upgrade to captain material or downgrade and invest elsewhere.

Where do you stand on B.Silva? 1.5 less and more nailed but potentially less output.

Ederson and Laporte are cheaper and will get more points. So you wouldn't have him alongside Sterling or KdB.

He was in my first draft, and my plan for this season is to try to get the two best captaincy options so I can never be massively left behind, and spread the rest of the funds pretty evenly.

To this end, I think 8.0 is probably the most I would want to spend outside of Sterling and Salah, and Siggy looks a slightly better option at this price point with his fixtures than Bernardo does. I'd try not to be too blindsided by the fact that Bernardo plays for the champions and try to get a talisman for someone else.

That's not to say that Bernardo couldn't be a blinding pick, however, and I will be keeping a close eye on him 🙂

Good structure. After those 2 I've spent 9m on Vardy and after that no one's cost more than 6.5m

Great idea. I can't find room for Vardy with the uber defence I'm looking at but I agree he's a great pick. I still might, I just realllly want Siggy!

I think all the facts point to a little investment going a long way, so 4->6m in defence, 4.5->6.5m in midfield etc. Beyond that you need players who might sig(gy)nificantly outperform their delta, and/or captain picks.

I think KDB could become a good option this season, but I am definitely not starting with him. He hasn't been a good option at any point over the last two years, even when not injured, and so I want to wait for some form before I splash the cash

Ryan > Ederson (value for money wise)
      VVD > Luiz/Azpi
      Siggy > Zaha
      Fraser > Tielemans

Overall, B definitely wins, but would really want to get VVD in there too

I am 0.5 short of that team 🙁
To get VVD < Luiz in that squad B I need to compromise elsewhere.
        1) Deulofeu > Billy Sharp (which is 6.0)
        or
        2) Ederson instead of Ryan and 4.5 (Adam Smith or Dunk or other) > Laporte
        3) Just get budget Brooks instead of Fraser
I struggle to see other options.

    Early draft here.

I think this is the season to go 3-5-2. So little value up front for how much you have to pay.

    Boruc 4.0
    Robertson VvD Holding Elmohamady Rico
    Salah Sterling Zaha Perez Kante
    Kane Pukki Greenwood

Need help with the defense and keepers. Good 4.5m rotation pairings?

BUR-AVL rotation I've heard is decent. But not sure on the nailedness of C.Taylor with Pieters coming in.

I'm proceeding on the assumption that Pieters is back up for Taylor. Can't see the former being better than he was when he was getting relegated with Stoke.

      I think it's the season for 5-4-1.

The value in premium defenders is greater than the value in cheap defenders, unlike any other position, and the value in defenders is greater than any other position

Defenders are better rotated purely because you can play the fixtures with them far easier than attacking players since the bulk of their points come from clean sheets.

But certainly, it's worth investing more in defense this season than in the past.

        1. Brosstan
          • 12 Years

I read an article that stated very clearly based on historical data that cheap defenders are notoriously bad value. (exceptions the ones that emerge as obviosuly underpriced like AWB/Doherty) Its also very hard to actually rotate them to consistently get results because lower side teams are unpredictable except for the fact that their clean sheets are few and far between.

So, I've been working with the FFS projection data. Interestingly, when you look at some player projections and their last season tally you see some huge differences. Sane, for example, ranks 437 out of 443 players in terms of the delta. Last season 156 points, this season he's forecast 102.

The top 5 projected points risers are:
    De Bruyne 59 > 165
    Benteke 33 > 123
    Almiron 28 > 116
    Giroud 55 > 134
    Mina 36 > 111

The ranking doesn't account for players who joined during the Jan transfer window.

    Still interesting...

No love for Lucas Moura here? He has goals in him (1 in 3 last season) and will start due to Son's suspension. Basically plays as a forward. Poch must have learnt his lesson from not starting him in Champion's league final, Spurs had little goal threat without his blistering pace.

I think I'm set on starting with him. As you say, he is nailed on for at least the first two games where their first fixture is really juicy. After two or three games there is almost always a stand out cheap midfielder bandwagon and by then he is probably expendable.

Yes. But I'm not as sold on him as an asset. Being so injury prone is a real hindrance.

How likely is moura gonna be nailed for first 5 games? Back to bench after son comes back?

Though call. Nailed for first 2. Most likely starts game 3 but after that impossible to tell

Why are people picking Tielemanns over Perez?

Perez scored 12 goals for Newcastle last year. He moved for 30m to Leicester this season. He's far more attacking, a big money signing and will start for sure as a winger/support striker.

Tielemanns meanwhile is the same price and plays CM. It's like picking Bernardo Silva over Sterling when they're the same price...

More nailed on, Perez could be rotated

With who? Albrighton? Gray? He's not being rotated when he's bought for 30m. Besides, he's quality. Really decent attacking player.

Personally think that Sterling and Vardy are brilliant options and KDB/Jota/Deulofeu are mediocre. Wouldn't really want to be picking between these two options but would say B

Really like the idea of going 4-5-1. Just the non-playing cheap strikers on the bench that are a problem. If someone like Wickham looks like he might get some decent minutes in the PL this season 4-5-1 might be the way I go

    1. Andy_Social
      • 14 Years

Could be a great strategy, but the big risk is its inflexibility. You can use or easily sell your dead strikers. You may need to take hits or WC if things are going great.

    Kante or Jorginho?

Jorginho is allergic to the penalty box but he's on penalties now that Hazard is out and with VAR that could be a large amount.

    1. Ask Yourself
      • 10 Years

Kante will be playing deeper this year. Jorginho will be deep lying playmaker similar to fabregas’ role, with penalties he should be a gift but wouldn’t be surprised to see abraham/striker take them
