Fantasy Premier League managers may have to wait to see how Trezeguet (£5.5m) settles in at Aston Villa before assessing his points-scoring potential.

Dean Smith continued his summer spending spree earlier this week by adding Egypt international to his roster, the ninth new signing of the transfer window.

His name alone may evoke nostalgia among football fans of the late 90s and early 00s but, unlike his retro namesake, this Trezeguet isn’t a striker and is yet to play even a minute’s worth of football in any of Europe’s major leagues.

Coming into FPL priced at £5.5m the Egyptian’s viability will depend on several factors.

Indicators of his abilities can no doubt be found by researching his time at previous clubs but can he cut it in the Premier League, let alone start at Aston Villa? And what effect will he have on Smith’s array of attacking options?

The history

and statistics

Trezeguet in action for Egypt at this summer’s African Cup of Nations

Trezeguet came through the youth ranks of Al Ahly in Egypt, one of the most successful football outfits in African football. Even at a young age, the former head coach of the club said that Trezeguet was “one of the best youngster’s he’s ever come across”.

Within a matter of a few years of turning professional, he had already won the Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League. His talent hadn’t gone unnoticed and was attracting attention from European scouts.

Trezeguet was not especially known for with his goal-scoring exploits during this period though, having netted only seven times. But clearly he was contributing in other areas of attacking play so it wasn’t long before Anderlecht came calling.

However, Trezeguet’s loan spell in Belgium was nothing but disappointing. Even when he signed permanently for Anderlecht he spent most of his time being loaned out to other clubs.

There were still benefits for the Egyptian in this as he was attaining crucial minutes on the pitch and was able to adapt his game in a different continent.

It wasn’t until the 2017/18 season, when loaned out to Turkish side Kasımpaşa, that Trezeguet started to make a name for himself again. Switching between the left and right flanks, this was his most successful campaign from an attacking perspective when he scored 13 goals and registered 7 assists in only 31 appearances.

Trezeguet was then signed permanently by Kasımpaşa and scored an additional nine goals for them in the following season. To put this into context he scored 20% of their league goals over the space of two seasons.

It’s this kind of form that FPL managers and Villans alike will be hoping that he can leverage in the Premier League. And if Dean Smith’s words are anything to go by, Trezeguet hasn’t just been signed to make up the numbers either.

“He’s the type of wide player that we have been looking for” – Dean Smith

Comparisons

Trezeguet did well in the Turkish top-flight last season

We must not forget that, on top of Trezeguet, Aston Villa have already signed two other wingers in the transfer window; Jota (£6.0m) from Birmingham and Anwar El Ghazi whose previous loan deal was made permanent.

Also at the club, and getting time in pre-season is Andre Green (£5.0m), while Jack Grealish (£6.0m), Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) and Birkir Bjarnason (£4.5m) are all capable of playing on the wing if needed.

This could potentially complicate things for Trezeguet, Jota and El Ghazi in particular as at least one of them will have to miss out each match if Smith continues using a 4-3-3 formation.

There is plenty to be encouraged about in Trezeguet’s underlying statistics though.

Last he averaged four shots per league game, dwarfing dwarfs the output from El Ghazi (1.9) and Jota (1.6). The fact that the Egyptian scored the same number of goals last season (nine) as the two of them combined, he could represent a strong prospect on his own.

Having said that, it is hard to compare the Turkish Super Lig with the Championship with the second tier of English football improving in quality and global appeal every year.

Either way, neither division stacks up to the Premier League so we should at least suspect there to be some reduction in Trezeguet’s shots per game this year compared to 2018/19.

If there’s one key attribute that Trezeguet displays, it is his adaptability. The fact he was has been able to adjust between three leagues over four years (2014-2018) shows that he can cope with change.

18 attacking returns last season (one for every 170 minutes played) by a winger in any league should not be scoffed at.

Even if Trezeguet was able to match half of that in the Premier League, with an FPL price tag of £5.5m, it would be considered a decent enough debut season, especially if it was enough to help keep Villa up.

It must be noted that over a quarter of Aston Villa’s goals last season were scored between Grealish, John McGinn (£5.5m) and Conor Hourihane (£5.5m) respectively, all three of whom predominantly operate in the central midfield trio of Smith’s 4-3-3 formation.

From an FPL perspective, there is a slight danger that Aston Villa now have too many players who are capable of chipping in with goals from across midfield and attack.

This could make it hard to pin down one individual who is involved in more goals than any of his team-mates, a talisman they can count on for attacking prowess in the mould of a Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) or a Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m).

Furthermore, Aston Villa also recently signed a new forward in Wesley (£6.0m), to replace the departed Tammy Abraham (£7.0m) and it is currently unclear how long it will take him to settle into the side too.

The Prospects

Trezeguet is unlikely to have the same impact on the Premier League as his Egypt team-mate Salah

It’s hard to recall the last time a player lit up the Turkish Super Lig and then made an immediate like-for-like impact on the Premier League the following season.

This on its own doesn’t bode well for Trezeguet, so it’s hard to consider him some kind of budget version of international colleague Mohamed Salah (£12.5m).

After all, the Liverpool man had previously played in the Premier League before arriving at Anfield having excelled in Serie A and the Champions League.

Trezeguet lacks this kind of valuable experience and may have to hit the ground running from Gameweek 1 or else risk being rested or rotated.

The £5.5m price does still make him a very interesting prospect for Fantasy managers.

In 2019/20, there are not many FPL assets at that price point who matched or bettered Trezeguet’s 18 attacking returns last season, even if they were recorded in a so-called ‘lesser league’.

At the same time, Trezeguet’s potential attacking influence is equally at risk of being cancelled out by Aston Villa’s other midfielders and forwards, while rotation between himself, Jota and El Ghazi.

The general FPL rule of thumb is to err on the side of caution and avoid players from newly promoted teams when selecting your best XI. This can probably also apply to Trezeguet as he comes into the team as a new face.

But if push came to shove, there is sufficient evidence to suggests that he could cause a surprise or two as a differential pick.

It does seem as if Trezeguet’s presence could boost Aston Villa’s attacking credentials, the question remains whether he can perform consistently and for that, we need to see him play a few weeks of Premier League football first.

I have BSilva but I hope to upgrade him to KDB. Last year BSilva played almost 2900 minutes and had 154 points. If KDB reach those minutes this year he will score around 200.

I think bilva is a good pick. Arguably with no mahrez and sane not being flavour of the month with pep he could easy play bilva on the right wing as he did often last season.

I actually think with KDB back bilva may be used more advanced and pep loves him

Sane is still young. He’s behind Sterling in development partially as he’s significantly younger. You need to look at Sterling two years back to make the comparison. Not that cut and dried to me.

City seem keen enough to keep him. He was an easy sale had they wanted.

They definitely want to keep him. Pep has been talking openly about sane for a long time. There have been good chunks in the last two seasons when sane has been one of the best and most important players at what's probably the strongest team I've ever seen. In terms of pure ability he is already the best left winger in the world. Pep wants to make him a complete player like he did with Aguero. It would be a very smart decisions if he signed the contract and listened to pep because he could help him become the best player in the world rather than just appealing to his ego like they would at bayern.
There will be rotation. Sterling, Bernardo, sane and mahrez all offer different things for different situations. That's the whole idea

      2. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years

        Any stats to show that?

Sane got 20 plus starts last season and combined with Sterling for lots of returns.

Much more likely imo is that Sane is the alternative to Dillva and Bilva rotated through positions. That was the pattern last season I seem to recall.

        1. Ask Yourself
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Yeah I agree. Pep’s best line up doesn’t have sane in though. He will only be rotated in when needed. If there are times he is needed he is a great FPL asset

            • 7 Years

Pep actually said last season he’d play Sane or Dilva according to the type of defence they were up against. Dilva in for deep lying ones.

He then of course did the exact opposite and played Sane in those games!!

              • 16 Years
              6 years, 8 months ago

Iirc his point was about playing sane in situations where they could isolate the full back. I suppose that's not deep lying teams sure but there's a bit more to it.
I think there's the tactical side but also I get the impression there's a bit of a tug of war behind the scenes where pep is trying to tame sanes mental side. Which by all accounts is not good and is why he was left out of German side for world cup. Pep had same with Aguero who was notoriously lazy and initially resisted peps attempts to overhaul the way he plays but eventually went with it and became even better for it. This tug of war could be the reason behind who knows how many benchings.

In previous seasons he looks to be able to consistently score for around a 200 points per season average, barring no injuries. Silva on the other hand will probably score quite a lot less. Personally I think KDB will beat Sterling this year for points per million.

I don’t think anyone is covering sterling with KDB. They’re expecting a better/comparable ppm and freeing up cash whereas Bilva is priced correctly.

I think I know exactly the pains you’ve been through when you really want that midfield but you’d also quite like 2 x Liverpool defenders and Wilson. Something has to give, and you’ve downgraded the defence.

I think it’s the right call tbh. I’ve compromised a bit more and am looking at Norwood/Jorginho instead of Pérez (at least for the first two games).

    4.0 - Greenwood - Dendonker - 4.5

Think A looks more balanced, in B KDB or Sterling could become Son if needed and with C could upgrade VVD to Robbo depending on the midfielder, thoughts please.

Sheff United friendly lineup... Robinson starts again, JOC got a knock so isnt in squad, mousset not fit. Lundstram starts again at cm, Ravel Morisson on the bench and Deno starts in goal 🙂

        Something like

        Deno
        Bald Egan JOC Jags Stevens
        Fleck Norwood Freeman/Rob
        Sharp Mcgoldrick

Depends on how fit Mousset, Morisson become. Be surprised if Lundstram starts... Apparently after Mcburnie for 18m from swansea, a tall CM and a CB I'd expect

No idea, we usually play a 5212 so either Norwood or fleck tbh. Have Freeman, Robinson and Morisson as Cams so can't see us playing 3 cms

I think Lunny will start (fellow Blade here). I have a feeling we'll go for a midfield 3 of Fleck, Norwood, Lunny with Freeman (and Morrison if match-fit) on the bench. Also have a feeling Robinson might start to add some mobility up top. Jags vs Basham is the other question, and I'm not sure which way that will go...

Honestly, I think we'll see a lot of Lunny this year - he's the closest thing to a "destroyer" that we have in midfield, and some games, maybe most games, we might need one

Defo nailed but not too sure about set pieces. Depends on the lineup, Sharp will take some pens I'd expect and Freeman us supposedly a freekick taker.

I think this is the best team, using up all the budget, if you're happy to have both Jota and Jimenez. All outfield players are capable of getting points.

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA VVD Laporte Digne (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling Fraser (Dendoncker Hayden)
    Jimenez King Jota

    Any comments?

"Best team" is a very bold statement. Especially for one that contains two 4.5 mids and a 4.0 defender that possibly won't start.

Don't need the 4.0 to start, just fodder. Will start one of the 4,5 instead if needed. If you have 3 decent strikers and 4 at the back you only need 3 decent midfielders.

      Perez should outscore King imo.

Perez is still not proven in my eyes. I would drop King after Bournemouth's great first 2 fixtures anyway. Can't take a risk with Zinchenko playing and Laporte is a proven FPL asset.

James has pace but needs to work on end product. Don’t get points for breaking the club 50m record. Also competing for his place.

I mean you obviously wouldn't expect him to get the same returns in a completely different setup. But he's definitely a very good player with insane pace and is also quite a composed finisher. He got Lille (A team who usually fights for relegation) a 2nd place finish.

He's very Salah-esque in terms of play style imo. Really exciting prospect.

Plenty of Premier league greats have come from the French league, a big step up but he could hardly have done any better at Lille, at what price would you consider him?

I think he comes at 9.0 or 9.5 which despite his numbers is a little too steep for me to get him from the get go considering he won't have any preseason with the team. I'd give him time for now but definitely an option later in the season.

Lille do not usually fight relegation by the way. Last season was quite unusual. They are typically a top ten team and won the league in 2011.

I mean they didn't break into Top 10 the season before last either. But I get your point. However, I'd still stick to my point and say that he along with Banana significantly improved Lille as a whole. Also outplayed everyone but Mbappe in the league last season.

    A) Richarlison, Ings, +0.5

Really liking this 5-4-1 with Salah, Mane and Sterling:

    Pope
    VVD | Zinchenko | Coleman | Targett | Kelly/Lundstram*
    Salah | Sterling | Mane | Jorginho
    Kane

    Button | Dendoncker* | Greenwood | Nkethia

*becomes 4-5-1 if 4.0 def doesn't play with Dendoncker.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

Likely you will not have 11 playing week 1. Mané to KDB and upgrade defence/second striker

That's a proper coup by Arsenal with no CL football.

If him and Rafa had stayed at Newcastle he'd definitely be in my team. Will be interesting to see how he settles in at Leicester. At his best he gets in the box and scores important goals. At his worst he spends a lot of time on the floor and complaining to the referee.
