Pep Guardiola delivered a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield.

As we have become accustomed to, the presser was low on concrete injury updates but the Manchester City boss was fairly upbeat-sounding ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

There is more than one way to interpret Guardiola’s comments, of course, and it may well be that he was referring exclusively to his group of players who have been representing their countries at the Copa America or Africa Cup of Nations.

Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee reported on Thursday that Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) was a doubt for the Community Shield with a knock, so it remains to be seen if the centre-half has shrugged off that minor issue to line up at Wembley.

The likes of Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) and Ederson (£6.0m) were namechecked in Guardiola’s comments and would seem set to be involved in the matchday squad.

However, Guardiola went on to suggest that the players who have already featured heavily in pre-season would again get the nod to start on Sunday.

Claudio Bravo (£5.0m) is set to start in goal after having played all 360 minutes of City’s four pre-season games so far.

How do people think Brighton will perform defensively this year? It would be really ideal to have Ryan and Button as set and forget keepers.

It will be that with Torriera over Xhaka or a 4-3-3 with Xhaka, Ceballos and Torriera, behind Pepe, Laca and Auba, with Ozil missing out.

Depends what Emery wants to do.

Back four might look more like:
          AMN - Sokratis - Chambers/Holding - Kola/Monreal

I was discussing Arsenal's starting eleven on here the other day, and one of their fans suggested the back four will be Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Sokratis and Monreal. I'm not so sure though. I think we could be looking at Maitland-Niles, Chambers, Soktratis and Kolasinac, as its doubtful Holding will be ready GW1.

Further forward I see Torreira and Xhaka, with Pepe, Ceballos and Aubameyang behind Lacazette. Not necessarily the opening weekend line up, but once everyone's settled.

              Fair point 😉

I think FPL clearly see him more in centre pairing, a la Cazorla, which backs up Emery using 4-2-3-1. Xhaka for all his shooting and passing ability, is shite at the defensive side. Ceballos & Torriera looks much more sturdy to cover the defence to me.

Until emery's roulette hits with ozil, mkhi, iwobi, guendouzi all waiting in the wings. If they played a liverpool set up with a fluid front 3 that was the same every game and Ceballos in the wijnaldum role would make total sense to then sell a load of the mediocre attacking mids and use the money for defensive reinforcements

        https://www.arsenal.com/news/analysis-what-ceballos-will-add-arsenal

Depends if he is playing the 8 role, replacing Ramsey or 10.

          • 16 Years
          6 years, 12 months ago

I haven't seen enough of him, but Ramsey was always such an attacking centre mid, I'm sure the heatmaps/shots stats etc would bear that out. Ceballos seems like a fundamentally different player in how he's been utilised to date. I can see the comparison but if it was anyone other than arsenal then it wouldn't be made, and Ramsey under emery wasn't terribly Ramsey-esque iirc but may have just been injuries...

        2. AndyCook
          6 years, 12 months ago

To be honest it’s more as a result of not enough space for defensively minded players/playmakers with Ozil in too. I am guessing Xhaka will continue and Torreira which with the front three doesn’t allow space for both. I agree with your point though

"Scout Notes: £4.0m FPL defender John Lundstram has played more pre-season minutes at central midfielder than any other Sheffield United player. FPL midfielder Callum Robinson is being used extensively as a centre-forward.

Form Players: L Freeman (two goals, three assists), Sharp (four goals), Robinson (three goals, one assist), Lundstram (three assists), Norwood (two goals), K Freeman (two assists)."

PS Morrison Ravel is both crap, and trouble. We had him, once. ðŸ˜

Well, I respect your opinion - but we don't know this. It is based on rep and transfer prices.

The one thing that everyone on here forgets, is that no manager worth his salt, gives a ff what a body cost. He just worries about their pass percentage. Honestly.

And I like the cut of Chris Wilder's jib.

Still so surprised so many Greenwoods in 15s.

Just can't see it happening myself, the occasional substitute appearance maybe, but the bare minimum I want from my bench is 2 points each week.
United chasing Dybala is also only going to force Greenwood lower down the pecking order.

    1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
      • 9 Years

I have big doubt there's much truth to Dybala, and do you really need your 3rd bench player to play the whole time?

Resigned Ayew as well. I expect them to sign a striker before the window is out to replace Michy. Even if they don’t Wickham is 3rd choice behind those 2

              • 9 Years

Palace will either sign someone for striker or get relegated. Also, Wickham is less likely to score more with more minutes because Palace are dog and United will give Greenwood more oppurtunities to score most likely.

              1. Andy_Social
                • 13 Years
                6 years, 12 months ago

There are different ways of looking at this. Greenwood and Nketiah will struggle to get too many minutes due to the strength of their squads, but Wickham is in the opposite situation. Because Palace's squad up top is so weak and they always start off so poorly, for me that massively increases his chances of playing. Not scoring maybe, but he'll get more pitch time than other 4.5s, so on that basis, he's a good one to have on the bench.

Barkley won’t be dropped unless his form dips, in which case you wouldn’t want him anyway. He 100% starts the first few games, he’s our form player atm. That being said Mount has probably been the second most impressive in pre season but imo if he gets minutes it will be alongside Barkley or out wide rather than at the expense of him

Ah right. He is better than Harry Wilson and we don't have a back up LW with less than a week to go. Sounds like a relatively easy deal, considering that

          - Bournemouth want Harry Wilson
          - We need a back up LW
          - Fraser contract expires next summer

Not inspiring, but a decent tweak to the squad.

It was said Arsenal were after him a while back. Howe said no way so they went after Zaha. Got Pepe.
So if going to Arsenal was a big no-no I'm sure Howe wont let him go to Liverpool. In fact, IIRC Howe said he'd risk Fraser running his contract down than letting him go.

As someone else said, like Zaha at Palace, Bournemouth without Fraser would be in real danger of relegation. losing well over 100m in income, and they know it. Pretty sure he's not going anywhere.

Unless they spunk the other 40m on another Dunk type

These transfers are the English premium on steriods. Wildly overrated players

Nah, it's just everyone trying to get rid of their sterling before Brexit makes the currency valueless.

Was considering Dunk even before these rumours. Now who rotated well with Leicester for defense?

    a) Digne, Zaha and King

    Or

    b) TAA, Noble and Wilson

Already have Robertson if cover means anything.

does Maguire's departure bring up the potential of Vardy?

Now Leicester has to score more to win games right

We were more defensively solid without Maguire than with last season...

That's when Morgan and Huth were in their prime though, right? They were kings of the low block.

You're either playing us or seeing way too much into it. I believe it's the former, but you never really know this days. Too much FPL can f-- up with your head

A potential swap of Harry Wilson for Ryan Fraser may be on the cards. Bournemouth fans on their forum don't seem too disappointed with this suggestion. I can tell you, they will be getting seriously short changed if this trade happens

I agree...but you have more options for mid then forward. And the diference in price is not small

Ryan Fraser can play in a number of positions. Klopp loves that type of flexibility

Surely Bournemouth can't sell Fraser at this point in the window with no back up, especially with the injuries they have?

Wilson would be the replacement. I really don't rate him though. This is just speculation atm

They won't be able to attract a player of Ryan's calibre. So whoever they are, they will likely be a downgrade.

Fraser can sign a pre contract agreement with any other club for free in 6 months time - someone in the BOU org chart has possibly dropped the ball here
