Crusaders 1-4 Wolves
(1-6 on aggregate)

Goals: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£7.5m), Ryan Bennett (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Jordan Forsythe

Assists: Diogo Jota x2 (£6.5m), Joao Moutinho x2 (£5.5m)

Wolves’ preparation for Gameweek 1 will now include a 6,000-mile round-trip to Armenia just days before they are scheduled to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Following their 6-1 aggregate victory over Crusaders in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, they will face Pyunik in the third.

They are based in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, roughly 3,000 miles from Wolverhampton.

Progression in European competition will certainly be of great encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo and his players but it is obviously far from ideal to go through a 3,000-mile journey between a Thursday night match and the opening game of the Premier League on Sunday.

Furthermore, Wolves could potentially be playing either of those games without star striker Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) who sustained an injury on Thursday night.

“We have to be careful to manage the right moments for him to get back in shape and get the full fitness we want. Let’s see, it was his foot, let’s see how it is.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The Mexican Gold Cup winner was Wolves’ star player against Crusaders scoring twice on his first time back in the starting XI since last season.

Before going off with a foot problem in the 55th-minute, Jiménez fired in two fantastic finishes to put the tie beyond Crusaders.

Jota (centre) provided both assists for Jiménez’s goals against Crusaders

For the first goal, he collected a Diogo Jota (£6.5m) cross on the edge of the box and slammed a powerful shot on the swivel low into the bottom corner.

For the second, Jiménez collected a backheel from Jota in a similar position to the first goal and, on the turn, fired the ball into the top corner.

However, whether he will be available for upcoming matches hangs in the balance although next Thursday’s third round first leg in Armenia may provide us with more information on Jiménez’s injury.

If he is unable to play either against Pyunik, Leicester or both then it could mean more game-time for FPL midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) up-front.

It was the 19-year-old who came on for Jiménez in the 55th minute and who has been deputising for him during pre-season while he was away on international duty and subsequent leave.

As we’ve mentioned before, who stands in for Jiménez, or indeed Jota, up-front long-term probably depends on Matt Doherty (£6.0m) as his continued absence meant another start at right wing-back for Adama Traoré (£5.0m) on Thursday night.

The rest of Wolves’ team remains very similar to what we became used to last season, as Nuno continues to enjoy a settled side.

Rui Patrício (£5.0m) was in goal behind a back-three of Conor Coady (£5.0m), Willy Boly (£5.0m) and Ryan Bennett (£5.0m).

Wolves remain largely a settled side heading into Gameweek 1

The latter was involved at both ends of the pitch inadvertently opening the scoring for Crusaders in the 13th minute.

The centre-back rose highest to meet a cross from the right-wing but headed the ball into his own net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bennett made amends as he nodded home a Joao Moutinho‘s (£5.5m) corner.

The Portuguese international sat alongside Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) in midfield and came away with two assists.

The first came for Bennett’s headed effort before it was Moutinho’s cross from deep that was headed into the Crusaders net by defender Jordan Forsythe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Coady, Boly, Bennett; Jonny, Neves (Saïss 68′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jiménez (Gibbs-White 55′), Jota (Vinagre 68′).

    TAA | VVD | Coleman | Rico
    Salah | Sterling | KDB | Barkley

Rico plays gw1 and could get the spot long term and Gibson plays due to Tarkowski's transfer to replace Maguire, what are your thoughts?

you could well end up with 10 players a lot of weeks: risks:

Adams the starting striker not really sure how that is a risk?
2 of those players are bench players

I think there is value in the 7-9M midfielders and you haven’t tapped into that and instead have KDB, as a result some of your other players are weaker than they would otherwise be

Not seeing a lot of Kane in teams around here - what's the general reasoning?

He seems to be in peak condition and team is revolving around him. Is it mainly team building issues with Kane, Sterling and Salah?

      Yep, you got it.

Kane + Sterling + Salah requires too much sacrifice elsewhere AND the value of each will be lower as you'll be captaining each less frequently - at these prices, captaincy is important

          Not impossible:

          Ryan - Button
          TAA - Robbo - Coleman - O'Connell - Rico
          Salah - Sterling - Barkley - Tielemans - Dendoncker
          Kane - King - Greenwood

I'm just not particularly happy with the balance of that team

          • 11 Years

          Here's my attempt:

          Heaton
          Robbo - TAA - Coleman - Zinchenko
          Salah - Sterling - Perez - Jorginho
          Kane - Jota

          (4.0 - Dendoncker - Kelly - Wickham)

          1. BlueEddy
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 1 month ago

Not sure you need both Robbo and TAA. You could downgrade one of them and then upgrade Jorginho

            1. Teror
              • 11 Years
              7 years, 1 month ago

Just don't see anybody worth downgrading them to that would be offset by upgrading Jorginho. 0.5 by getting VvD or Laporte gets me nowhere. Luiz at 6.0 could be good but Chelsea could be crap under Lampard. No one else at 5.5 worth considering cept maybe Alderweirald. With Robbo and TAA you know exactly what you're going to get and I don't expect much from Jorgi.

    A or B?

    A:

    Pope (Button)
    TAA, Robbo, Zinchenko, Dunk (Lundstram)
    Sterling, Salah, Perez, Barkley (Dendoncker)
    Kane, King (Greenwood)

    B:

    Pope (Button)
    TAA, Robbo, Zinchenko, Dinge (Lundstram)
    Sterling, Salah, KDB, Barkley (Dendoncker)
    Jota, King (Greenwood)

      So it's Kane+Perez or Jota+KDB?

      The latter for me.

No, more like Kane, Perez & Dunk v Jota, KDB & Digne!

Thanks! With B, would you stick with Barkley & Robbo or go Perez & VVD instead?

They could price him at 7.5, same as Haller but I doubt they will since Haller has a better record last season.
      So my guess is 7

    A:
    TAA / Walker / Kane

    B:
    VVD / Zinc / Aguero

Currently on A but wondering if it makes sense to make this move since I have KDB but not Sterling, wondering if this is worth doing, as I could eventually pick up Son for Spurs coverage if I dont have Kane. Thoughts?

A if you already have City coverage in KDB
either way you can't go wrong tbh

Im not sure KDB is equal coverage. To me that is like having Firminho as Liverpool coverage.

That's still more or less the template team and pretty much what I've got cept Jota and Martial over Del and Sig.

Stick I reckon, Siggy may be worth the punt with his early fixtures same as Deu but he can easily become any 6.5

Deulofeu didn't play every game last season, so that's why I'm not getting him.

It’s hard to reconcile that with Watford’s cup run, I’m not sure if that influenced it

    Ryan

    Perez Pepe Sterling Salah
    King Deulofeu

    Button, Lundstram, Greenwood, Dendoncker

Pepe vs KDB is the main debate for me now...

So guys, apparently Everton are in for this guy, a direct Gueye replacement.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49204313

Had a look on whoscored.com to scope this guy out and one particular characteristic - weaknesses - stands out: 'holding onto the ball'. Not something you'd want from a holding mid: https://www.whoscored.com/Players/129758/Show/Jean-Philippe-Gbamin

Everton defence owners be worried, be very worried...
