Crusaders 1-4 Wolves
(1-6 on aggregate)

Goals: Raúl Jiménez x2 (£7.5m), Ryan Bennett (£5.0m)

Own Goals: Jordan Forsythe

Assists: Diogo Jota x2 (£6.5m), Joao Moutinho x2 (£5.5m)

Wolves’ preparation for Gameweek 1 will now include a 6,000-mile round-trip to Armenia just days before they are scheduled to face Leicester at the King Power Stadium.

Following their 6-1 aggregate victory over Crusaders in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, they will face Pyunik in the third.

They are based in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, roughly 3,000 miles from Wolverhampton.

Progression in European competition will certainly be of great encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo and his players but it is obviously far from ideal to go through a 3,000-mile journey between a Thursday night match and the opening game of the Premier League on Sunday.

Furthermore, Wolves could potentially be playing either of those games without star striker Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) who sustained an injury on Thursday night.

“We have to be careful to manage the right moments for him to get back in shape and get the full fitness we want. Let’s see, it was his foot, let’s see how it is.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The Mexican Gold Cup winner was Wolves’ star player against Crusaders scoring twice on his first time back in the starting XI since last season.

Before going off with a foot problem in the 55th-minute, Jiménez fired in two fantastic finishes to put the tie beyond Crusaders.

Jota (centre) provided both assists for Jiménez’s goals against Crusaders

For the first goal, he collected a Diogo Jota (£6.5m) cross on the edge of the box and slammed a powerful shot on the swivel low into the bottom corner.

For the second, Jiménez collected a backheel from Jota in a similar position to the first goal and, on the turn, fired the ball into the top corner.

However, whether he will be available for upcoming matches hangs in the balance although next Thursday’s third round first leg in Armenia may provide us with more information on Jiménez’s injury.

If he is unable to play either against Pyunik, Leicester or both then it could mean more game-time for FPL midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m) up-front.

It was the 19-year-old who came on for Jiménez in the 55th minute and who has been deputising for him during pre-season while he was away on international duty and subsequent leave.

As we’ve mentioned before, who stands in for Jiménez, or indeed Jota, up-front long-term probably depends on Matt Doherty (£6.0m) as his continued absence meant another start at right wing-back for Adama Traoré (£5.0m) on Thursday night.

The rest of Wolves’ team remains very similar to what we became used to last season, as Nuno continues to enjoy a settled side.

Rui Patrício (£5.0m) was in goal behind a back-three of Conor Coady (£5.0m), Willy Boly (£5.0m) and Ryan Bennett (£5.0m).

Wolves remain largely a settled side heading into Gameweek 1

The latter was involved at both ends of the pitch inadvertently opening the scoring for Crusaders in the 13th minute.

The centre-back rose highest to meet a cross from the right-wing but headed the ball into his own net.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Bennett made amends as he nodded home a Joao Moutinho‘s (£5.5m) corner.

The Portuguese international sat alongside Ruben Neves (£5.5m) and Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) in midfield and came away with two assists.

The first came for Bennett’s headed effort before it was Moutinho’s cross from deep that was headed into the Crusaders net by defender Jordan Forsythe.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Coady, Boly, Bennett; Jonny, Neves (Saïss 68′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jiménez (Gibbs-White 55′), Jota (Vinagre 68′).

The thing with Kane is his ownership...if he scores...its red arrows.

Sounding like Jorghino is deep and at risk. As long as you have another captain option - I'd go with B

    RMT please!

Best attempt of getting a balanced team with Salah, Sterling & Kane:

    Pope (Ryan)

    TAA, Coleman, Ake (Guilbert, Kelly)

    Salah, Sterling, Tielemans, Townsend (Hayden)

    Kane (C), King, Wesley

      I suggest my one instead:

      Heaton
      TAA - Robbo - Zinchenko - Coleman
      Salah - Sterling - Perez - Jorginho
      Kane - Jota

      (4.0 - Dendoncker - Kelly - Wickham)

        Pope
        TAA, Zinchenko, Coleman, 4.5
        Salah, Sterling, Perez, Barkley
        Kane, Wilson

Like this team a lot. The only doubt would be Jorginho but I cant think of anyone better at that price.

Do you think Zin is nailed with Danilo still at the club? If not could swap Zin and Robbo for Walker and VVD

I've got a Kane/Sterling/Salah team and taken a punt on Barkley and Moutinho in a 352. But that might change. Got a feeling about Wesley (currently on King as my 2nd striker....)

            Townsend to Barkley

Pope to 4.0 (he might miss the start of the season with an injury but if he's fit go with him)

Upgrade Ake to Alder/Zinch/Wan Biss/ whoever looks like will be the best top six nailed 5.5 def

I'd add him to the watchlist for a few weeks rather than going with him from the start. Same goes for all newly promoted players as you never know which will sink or swim. He does have potential though

Which team looks better, and why?

    A)
    Pope (McGovern)
    TAA Vvd DIGNE Zinchenko (Rico)
    Salah STERLING Barkley (Dendoncker, Hayden)
    Vardy Haller KING

    B)
    Pope (McGovern)
    Vvd MATIP* COLEMAN Zinchenko (Rico)

A, just feel it's all round more solid but also ultimately comes down to who you'd feel more comfortable in captaining in Sterling or Kane that would sway it either way

Cheers for response, those are the prices to pay for Ederson in goal, Wesley I feel alright about as he should be nailed and the possibility of pens but am worried about Robinson but means I'd have to downgrade my 5.5 defender to a 5 and bring in say Pereyra or Trossard

        Rest of the team is

        Heaton/Pope

        TAA/VVD/Coleman/Walker/Lundstrom

        Salah/KDB/Fraser/Siggy/Dendoncker

        Greenwood.

So, the extra 1.0 would only be used to either upgrade Greenwood or bump up Walker to Laporte and maybe one of the goalies to a 5.0

    Pope
    Robbo | VVD | Walker
    Sterling | Siggy | Perez| Moura
    Wilson | Auba | Deulofeu

Anything worth changing here? Reckon Auba will do well and Pepe would only give the team a big confidence boost and attacking prowess.

Anybody rate Lanzini's chances, I know theres competition in that squad but he looks to me as though he'll be as nailed as you can be? Impressive in pre season, goals, good team around him, Haller a great hold up player for him to work off, hungry for game time after his injury.

Not seen him in any squads, so just wondering what others thought.

    1. Siggy in the Middle

The problem is that he isn't that nailed by the look of it. If Wilshire plays as a DLP then he can only play CAM or RW. CAM could be Fornals and RW could be Yarmolenko or Antonio

Seems a shame, it seems the pattern has been he's always been subbed for Diangana, where Fornals has been rotated with Antonio. Yarmolenko, Anderson and Antonio have shifted a few times aswell.

I can't see when the season starts proper Diangana shifting him out of the team him that often.

West Ham's midfield almost a big a minefield as Man City's. Too much competition and rotation to be reliable fantasy picks.

I guess you are right, I just really like the look of them this year, along with those fixtures after City. It could come good if you roll the dice, but I guess therein lies the problem 😛

No Laca in training today ahead of Sunday.
Holding returns to training hopefully he gets minutes on Sunday (4.5m). Pepe looked sharp in his first training session with arsenal

Shame. I was keen on him as a week 1&2 differential

And so it begins. Who gets hauled at half time to make way for Pepe?

      I’m hoping it’s Ozil 🙂

I'd fit him in if I could. I can't so instead I'll get Kean in gameweek 3

      Kean might affect his FPLness?

Only for the better as he won't be up front. Normally that's a good thing but Richarlison seemed to do better out wide.

I think reading the comments here is more of a hindrance than of help! I must have changed my team 100 times now.
