Liverpool take on Manchester City in the Community Shield this afternoon and the match could be as big a signpost as any as to how the two sides will line up in Gameweek 1.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) both make their first starts of pre-season for the Reds and are joined by Divock Origi (£5.5m) in the front three.

Sadio Mane (£11.5m) is yet to return following his involvement with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Alisson (£6.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) all unsurprisingly feature in the Liverpool backline but Joe Gomez (£5.5m) has been given the nod over Joel Matip (£5.5m) to partner van Dijk at centre-half.

James Milner (£5.5m) is ruled out as a precaution due to a tight muscle.

There are no huge shocks in the Manchester City starting XI, with Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) missing out through injury as expected.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Ederson (£6.0m) are only among the substitutes after their late return from the Copa America.

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) again leads the line for the Citizens and will be flanked by Leroy Sane (£9.5m) and Bernardo Silva (£8.0m).

Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) is part of City’s central midfield three, while Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) starts again at left-back.

Kick-off at Wembley is at 15:00 BST.

        Two season wonder

In all seriousness, his diving around in the penalty box shouldn't be rewarded anymore and that would hurt his output

Richarlison always starts the season well then goes into the tank once it gets cold. Usually, I'd start with him and switch to Gylfi later, but VAR/Moise signing might make Sigurdsson better from the off.

Agree. Disproportionate praise. Sterling has been in the goal-poaching positons, making space for runs & great little touches.

My attempt to crowbar KdB into my squad has left the rest of it quite a bit weaker:

    Pope - Heaton
    Robbo - TAA - Stones - Femenia - Lundstram
    Salah - Sterling - KdB - March - Jorginho
    Wilson - Wood - Greenwood

    So, which one is better:
    A. KdB, Stones & 5 Mid, or
    B. Fraser, Walker & Perez

Expect him to be benched around once every 4 games against easy opposition. Its probably more likely to happen later in the season though. They want to get off to a good start and Sterling is one of their most important players.

    Half time thoughts....

Liverpool defence double up not as enticing as it was. Seem to be experimenting a bit and don't look sharp. TAA in particular looks off the pace.

KDB playing well and great runs from deep as well as arriving late in box

Sterling still gonna be getting those tap ins.

Zinchenko good on the ball, not so much off it.

    Salah still dangerous.

    About right?

King or Barkley? Can’t make up my mind

Barkley looks enticing but King has 2 tasty fixtures upfront by which time Chelsea picture should be a lot clearer

      And why not both?

King for my tbh. Chelsea are a huge questionmark this season.

      In isolation, King.

Mount still worries me. Also concerned about the match vs. Liverpool between GWs. Quick turnaround for Chelsea. Potential rotation?

So according to many above Liverpool defensive double up not worth it based on 45 minutes of football against the Champions.
    Says it all really.

I think some were expecting Liverpool to go all season without conceding.

Could still totally be worth it... Just not as enticing as they haven't looked solid in any pre season game at all. Granted, it's Norwich first up so cleanie still very very likely.

I think a lot of people are saying that as they are doing it anyway!

You would be mad not to do...
