Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Yerry Mina x3 (£5.5m), Michael Keane x2 (£5.5m), Jordan Pickford x1 (£5.5m)

Crystal Palace and Everton played out a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park that highlighted both sides’ serious need for a goalscoring forward in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

However, it left Fantasy managers invested in the defences of each team delighted to get clean sheets at the first time of asking.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) had two excellent chances for Everton but couldn’t find the back of the net, disappointing the 14% of Fantasy maangers who trusted him with a spot in their Gameweek 1 sqauds.

Meanwhile, strong defending from Michael Keane (£5.5m) and his colleagues, as well as some smart stops from Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), kept Palace at bay to ensure the Merseysiders continued their strong defensive form from the end of the 2018/19 season.

That was welcome news for those who had been a little concerned about the value in Everton’s defence in light of Idrissa Gueye’s departure and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) remaining at Chelsea.

Palace grew into the game and were helped by the introduction of Zaha

However, it must be said that Palace did spend the first 65 minutes without their talismanic forward player Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) who missed pre-season due to involvement in the African Cup of Nations and reportedly handed in a transfer request towards the end of the summer window.

Selected by 19.8% of managers ahead of Gameweek 1, Zaha was omitted from the starting XI by Roy Hodgson, but came off the bench to a raucous ovation from the Selhurst faithful indicating the fans are both appreciative and understanding of the Ivorian’s situation despite reportedly trying to force a move to Everton.

“I only really saw him on Friday, basically, because I sent him home on Thursday and we didn’t train on Wednesday. But if you are asking me how was he yesterday, he was fine. And today in the dressing room, and in the game? He was excellent in the dressing room, and you could see what he did in the game. The fact is that the situation has been and gone. I am sure Wilf will now make certain he brings his straw to the water to help us have a good season, just like he has in the past two seasons [when I have been here].” – Roy Hodgson

Saturday’s fixture against Everton highlighted that in spite of the situation regarding Zaha and the question marks over his commitment to the club, this is a player with raw and unparalleled ability in Palace’s squad and someone who could make a serious attacking impact for the Eagles in 2019/20. It took him coming on to spark Palace into life.

“I thought he handled it very well. The crowd helped didn’t it, giving him such a great reception. It was nice to have him available. I thought the two front players did an exceptional job, but they were tiring, and it was good to have him to come on, and Connor Wickham too to help keep that momentum that we had going in the latter part of the game. It was never going to be easy to break them down, although I hoped that we might eventually.” – Roy Hodgson

Max Meyer (£5.5m) had a string of promising chance for Palace, but the German couldn’t find a clinical cutting-edge as Hodgson’s side laboured in vain.

Christian Benteke (£6.0m) also fired a number of blanks with the Belgian appearing to be still short of confidence and unlikely to shoulder responsibility for Palace’s goals this season.

Richarlison and Everton’s attacking players are in need of some help, which Kean should bring them

It was a similar story for Everton who began the match without new signing Moise Keane (£7.0m) in the starting line-up, the striker having not been involved in any of the Toffees’ pre-season matches.

After arriving as a 69th-minute substitute for Dominic Calvert Lewin (£6.0m), he showed glimpses of quality that suggested the hype surrounding his switch from Juventus could be justified.

The Italian should play an important role for the Toffees this season but may need time to find his feet, as well as earning the trust of Fantasy managers with more proven options such as Sigurdsson and Richarlison (£8.0m) currently available.

Pickford’s defensive performance underlined his value to Fantasy managers with a first clean sheet of the season. The defensive quartet of Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Yerry Mina (£5.5m) Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and Keane shielded the England international from Palace’s efforts in the second half and will have inspired confidence in their Fantasy owners ahead of Watford’s trip to Goodison Park in Gameweek 2.

Everton could have some central midfield issues after Gomes (right) went off injured and Schneiderlin was shown a red card

However, an injury to Andre Gomes (£5.5m) is an area of potential concern for Everton’s central midfield options. He was replaced by new signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) in the 45th minute.

Silva confirmed that the 26-year-old is set to be assessed in the coming days and admitted that Everton suffered when he had to come off.

“The moment the game changed was the injury to André Gomes. We hope it’s not serious. When I changed it with Jean-Philippe Gbamin he had some problems, which is normal he needs to adapt, and when you sign new players, young players they need time to adapt and it was one of the keys for us because we started losing easy balls during that second-half.” – Marco Silva

Furthermore, Everton are already down one option in central midfield after Morgan Schneiderlin‘s (£4.5m) red card in the second half. He was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 76th minute and will miss that meeting with Watford next weekend.

“I didn’t see the first [booking]. But the referee gave the second. For me it was not, but Morgan should not react like he did, if you are playing with a yellow card, you have a risk.” – Marco Silva

A lot of kneejerking swapping premiums around on here.. Remember that each one of them will have their 10+ days and also have a 2 point day. At the end of the season they'll average out to 7 ppg either way. So if your premium "underperformed" he could well perform in the next game and vice versa. The law of averages. Concentrate transfers on dead players and players that look like dead options ie Allison and maybe the cheap 5.5 to 6.5 punts that look like they won't work out after 2 to 3 weeks. Even in defense.. Its tempting to shift Robertson to a 4.5 since they got a clean sheet.. But remember that long term Robertson could be one of the top scoring defenders in the game and even the best 4.5ers will always hover under the 130 mark. Even those of us that went kdb over Sterling.. He got 7 points.. Looked fantastic and got a bonus point with 1 assist on a day that City scored 5 goals and kept a clean sheet. Have faith.. And breathe. I for one am monitoring Robinson and King one more week and planning to use my transfers there most likely over the next few weeks.

Course if we could have 4 premiums this point would be moot.. But you can just have 2 to 3. Keep the faith.

Also, knee-jerking to get all 3 that scored well is dangerous as we don't know who out of the budget players are good options. It will take a few weeks for a Fraser, Jimenez, Doherty to clearly emerge. Once we know we will have cash in order to downgrade the higher mid proceed assets to these players and this should free up the budget to bring in a 3rd big hitter.

This, although I had Kane, Sterling and Salah, but went with mostly tested FPL point scorers for start of season. Budget form options will emerge to increase defence, or bring in say KDB in weeks to come. People doing Origi transfer is insane with Mane back next week for example

My target this season from the outset was pick a few key players and stick with them long-term. Lost too many points on hits and trying to predict which of the big-hitters will 'explode this week' in the past.

Sterling’s all round game was excellent throughout, constantly in dangerous positions. Kane looked slow and for 85 minutes cumbersome.

My strategy over the past 3 years (2 of which have been top 5k finishes) is simple. If you pick up an injury like Alisson make a trade. If you don't you spent a lot of time in pre-season setting up your team with a strategy. Hold for another week and in game week 3 consider a -4 point hit where you can restructure your team as you see fit.

I have a SSK team, yes we've done well but there's no need to be smug. We got it right this time but could easily have been a Kane blank and Everton etc conceding. And Barnes matched Kane anyway so could have saved money there and got SSB!

Long term I know in my heart it's not the right way to play the game for me, 5 defenders is boring, there'll be cheap mids that I want to get and as you said when the big hitters blank there's not much else in my team that'll put points on the board

8 have him. Saw the game. Sissoko always interfere him to run across the line. It looks like he didnt have any interest in the game. It seems to me he cant attack or poch told him not to.
Im keeping for NEW but think he isnt good choice as I thought originally.

I'm keeping for sure. He went forward quite a bit, too bad most of his crosses got blocked for corners. He looked good enough to keep his place and besides foyth being suspended he also was injured. not expected back till september, i'm betting walker peters plays vs newcastle and looks good for points on both sides

He looked a bit our of sorts yesterday after coming on. No visible problems with his attitude though so he can be predicted to come good, he saw lots of the ball and clearly wanted to make things happen.

Opted to not go for CWilson, as he scored a decent amount of goals but his points tally is very much because of his assists, he got 12 i think last year and i herad that his expected assists were 3 so that was the reason i thought he was just lucky, then i watched Bournemouth game i realized his not lucky, he just tends to be in the heart of things. Funny how one perspective could change in one instant-)

Watching the games actually saves lots of time if the other option is to try and make informed decisions by going through data and 2nd hand accounts.

I was a bit surprised by they but it’s the same reason that back up keepers at good sides are more expensive than regular starters at poor sides - if they become regular fixtures in the team the potential is higher

Nah, set pieces already showed their value with the corner assist for Mo. Probably penalties if milner isn't on the pitch. Only if Mané outplays Mo from open play i'll consider, but i guess he'll be on par at best from open play.
