Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) are expected to do battle for the Gameweek 2 captaincy.

The Egyptian was the overwhelming favourite for the armband in Gameweek 1 and rewarded his backers with a 12 point haul against Norwich.

However, Sterling went one better by netting a hat-trick and coming away from a 5-0 win over West Ham with a 20-point haul.

That big score is likely to inspire a host of Fantasy managers to captain the Englishman in Gameweek 2 as Spurs come to the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling was involved in 20 goals at home last season, 12 his own and eight assists, only Salah registering more involvements in front of his own fans (21).

Meanwhile, Spurs looked far from assured defensively as took their time to get into gear against Aston Villa in Gameweek 1.

However, Salah faces a trip to Southampton, a team he is more than capable of registering attacking involvement against.

Last season the Egpytian scored more goals away from home than any other player while Southampton kept just three clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Only Manchester United managed fewer than that in the whole of 2018/19 (two).

After registering a 13-point haul against Aston Villa, there is plenty of interest in Harry Kane (£11.0m).

However, it seems unlikely that many will back him for the captaincy considering it’s a trip to Manchester City up next.

More likely to trouble the favourites as a differential option is Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m).

He scored the only goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Newcastle and faces a Gameweek 2 Saturday lunch-time meeting with Burnley.

You can now vote in the Gameweek 2 captain poll either below or in the website’s side-bar.

Joe and David will be discussing the captaincy on our YouTube channel at 12:30 pm on Monday afternoon too.

    * not really. Love it. But my god I do spend way too long contemplating it - the outside chance that a 4.0m defender from sheffield utd might play and if I should put him in ahead of walker peters.

You can already tell man united is going to be good. Wan bissaka and maguire exactly what they needed. Also better off without matic. Rashford and martial to score 15+ goals.

Steady on. That was at home to a very new look Chelsea who could be in for a rough ride. First half was not convincing. They hit the woodwork twice.

I'll be waiting a few weeks before moving my stock in their direction.

Better out without Matic? Defensively he does more that McTominay and Pogba together.

But Man U had an efficient game against a naive team. Not sure that will make them good seasonwise.

It’s the same story every season – something in gameweek 1 doesn’t go to plan and people start jumping on whoever had a good week. However, even for those not making a transfer this week, it can be good to take a look at the week just gone and pick out a few who had noteworthy performances.

So, from our very limited data set of just a week, who impressed you in their first performance despite perhaps being less in your thinking before?

    1. The Seagulls and the Trawle…

First two are high on my watchlist. Was really impressed by that Pukki performance, caused all sorts of problems for Liverpool.

Would also add Buendia - would like to see him in a game against an easier opponent to see how attacking he becomes. Real creative influence regardless though.

People really need to be a lot more patient with their transfers. I'm banking a transfer this week for sure.

I was really considering Rashford but I didn't get him in the end. I think this could really be his breakthrough season, so if he continues to score he's coming straight into my team.

Perfect, I was waiting for somebody to say Emerson!

Yes - Chelsea were shocking defensively, but we already knew that. What I wasn't expecting though is to see Emerson attacking like Alonso!

He was really driving forwards that game, with 4 shots on goal (3 from inside the box) despite playing for a team that lost 4-0 on the same side as AWB. Worth monitoring for if Chelsea ever tighten up imo, though Alonso will always be a threat worth monitoring.

      United players all need monitoring
Mahrez if he can Neil down a starting spot (whatever that means at city)

That’s about it for me really. Oh and Dendoncker could actually be a viable playing 5th midfielder as at 4.5 he is definitely undervalued.

Frustratingly week 1 has helped me identify more concerns with my team / options I was considering than exciting positive options

The young players moving up from academy / second string / championship look exciting: Mount, James, Maitland Niles, Wesley... all at good prices, all with nothing to hold them back. Also think Wilson will break through with Brooks out.

Certainly looked like Bournemouth were missing something in midfield, really wouldn't be surprised if Younger Wilson offered just that. Would also raise the stock of Older Wilson too, which would be an added benefit for many.

Definitely. I'm a proxy Derby fan (Evertonian living in Derbyshire) and went to Pride Park 5/6 times last season. Was very impressed. Surprised Liverpool didn't keep him at home this year.

Looked completely at home at OT and back to his old bonus tricks again it seems. Will be good to see United's defence tested a few more times though, if Chelsea had taken their early chances (instead of hitting the woodwork) it could have been a very different story. Think that defence has tightened up though, which would make AWB very tempting

Nice spot. He played well last year but came in for a hard time when he stepped into Buendia's shoes following a RC and the team struggled a bit. At the start of summer when NC players went on break, loads of feedback and pictures he had stayed at home, in the gym, on the pitch etc. He saw this as a chance to play PL and is grabbing it - really hoping this is his breakout a year. Through pre-season he showed he has taken a big step over the summer

FWIW, Rashford's non-penalty xG per 90 (pk's are hard to predict) is 0.55. For comparison, Martial is 0.77.

Statistically, those who under-performed their NPxG per 90 (60 mins min): McGoldrick, Che Adams, Ayew, Emerson, and Siggy.

Barkley, who played alongside Mason Mount and should be on penalties. Looks the best route to Chelsea attack - not touching “defence” (if you can call it that) with a 10ft pole.

I'll add AMN to the list as I took him out last minute and regret it! Superb assist and should have that spot nailed down at least til Bellerin is back.
Brighton assets on my watchlist under Potter.
Boly is still a beast, Pukki looked the part, and an off the wall one in Almiron if he can kick on as he looked really sharp.

I generally start the season well, don’t take hits early and become too cautious. Results in being late to the early template players, plus the TV for the second half of the season becomes too poor because of the cautious approach. This season I want to exploit early form and also rack up the TV because it will be crucial later in the season. Just look at all the premium players we currently can't fit in our teams.

Besides Rashford is a very streaky players. Could easily get 8 in 10 before a couple of dry months. Best to get him as soon as he hits form.

I have Vardy and King at the mo. Vardy to Rash would be easy, but want to see LC settle in first. Wolves are pretty decent in defense so will see how Rash goes this weekend, then fixtures turn better and may make the move then.

But you’d now be happy to imbalance it to get him in?

Stick to the plan in my opinion. Kane isn’t exactly a great option this week so that buys you some time. Son is back from
Week 3 and maybe he is a more viable option than Kane at 9.5

To be fair, the FFS article early pre-season stressed how impotent he is without Son, so many were holding off on owning Kane from the outset. Perfectly valid to re-evaluate now, imo.

I watched the game and Benteke looked very lively in 2 half, he create 100% chance for Ayew and press Everton very well. Zaha came on and of course were on different level that Ayew/Meyer, so, I see Zaha straight swap with Meyer/Ayew. Wickham don`t do nothing.

The big let downs this past weekend were the sides who have aspirations of finishing in the Top 6.

Not one of the sides who finished between 7th and 13th last season managed a single goal between them!

There were blanks for Wolves, Everton, Leicester, West Ham, Watford, Crystal Palace and Newcastle.

Anybody who quite reasonably looked to get an attacking player at a good price from any of those sides will have been left disappointed, for now at least!

9 clean sheets in the opening weekend is very high I think?

It often starts this way (and I always forget and wrongly conclude invest in premium defenders where as actually you can often get some cheaper value at start - wolves and Everton sort of nullified each other, West ham haven't had a chance yet. Everton not yet clicked but will be interesting to see after a week more of iwobi/kean integration. I'd anticipate seeing one of those first 4 starting to show promise next few weeks...

Is FPL stats still the best site for price change predictions??

Too early to say. If FPL Towers have tweaked their algorithm, it'll take those sites time to get themselves accurate.

Avfc: what's your take on Villa assets after week 1? Did you watch the game - Given its a totally new team is hard to tell best options (eg mcginn won't score every week, neither will they play spurs away)...

I'm waiting. Four new players in the starting eleven on Saturday, four more on the bench, can see it taking a few weeks to gel, but hope I'm wrong!
