Teemu Pukki‘s (£6.5m) goal against Liverpool in Gameweek 1 already has Fantasy managers concerned about doubling up on the Reds’ defence this season.

Liverpool kept 21 clean sheets last year, more than any other side, but are yet to register one in 2019/20 after conceding on Friday night.

Doubling-up on the Reds’ defence had previously proved a popular tactic this summer.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is still the most fashionable of the Liverpool back-line, owned by 50% of managers for the first Gameweek.

Meanwhile, as the first deadline of the campaign passed, Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) sat in 34% of squads, and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) was in 24% of them.

Various combinations of these three defenders were also forming part of many a manager’s setup for the 2019/20 season.

12.3% of all Fantasy managers had both van Dijk and Robertson for Gameweek 1, 7% paired the Dutchman with Alexander-Arnold while 6.8% owned both full-backs.

However, after Liverpool’s opening day display, there are those who are worried about whether they should be so heavily invested in Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

Alisson is now set to be out for several weeks with a muscle problem

The injury to Alisson (£6.0m), expected to be out for at least a few weeks, is also giving some Fantasy managers cold feet about last season’s best back-line.

In this latest article, we will look at the data from Gameweek 1 to see how much we should be worried about Liverpool’s defence moving forward.

As this uses information from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 campaign can access it in full.

How did Norwich do offensively on Friday night?

Lessons learned from Gameweek 1

Thinking of shifting my team to something like this.

    Pope
    TAA - Laporte - AWB - Christensen - Coleman
    Salah - Sterling - Son - Mount
    Rashford

    4m - Dendoncker - Greenwood - Wickham

    Thoughts? Too crazy?

I’m more interested in the fact that Pukki is the real deal.
I know he done well last season but that wasn’t the Prem.
I watched the game and I reckon he we get a lot of goals again this season.
His movement is brilliant and his link up play is just as good.
Swapping him in for King. Newcastle up next.

I'm also interested in that transfer, but who has bigger chances for goals/assists?
King vs City, Leicester, Everton or Pukki vs Chelsea, WHU, City
Coz they both have relatively easier opponents this GW

I think Pukki could do better against more difficult opponents because they play with a higher line
The timing of his runs are impeccable, he was getting behind that Liverpool backline so easily

Midfielders regularly get the most points, especially those that should really be attackers. Salah, sterling, martial etc. All are playing as advanced as some of the “attackers” in the game

I'm on 3-5-2 and like it

Considered 4-5-1 a number of times with 2 FTs in GW3 but keep finding a way to chicken out from the plan due to the "second sub" issue, so still on 3-5-2

5-3-2 with 3 big hitters. Not happy with Luiz as 5th def. 4-4-2 pretty soon probably. For me the formation doesn't matter. I would actually prefer mids over fwds, but the lack of decent 6-6.5 cheapies forced to this structure.

I think 4.5 is plenty on your playing keeper so I would never consider a). But I wouldn't think of these choices in terms of exact players, specifically with as little info as we have on individuals at the moment. Measure them as price points.

      So a) 6.0gk / 8.0mf vs
      b) 4.5gk / 9.5mf

Which is the best distribution of funds?

If you go a) are you going to want to release that 1.5 extra at some point to invest further up the field? Are you going to want to use up a transfer on a gk to do that? Or risk pricing yourself out of optimal team configurations.

It's not such a simple question.

Wow. Kante confirmed injured. Kante having an injury-ravaged season (like KDB/Alli last season) could make things even worse for Chelsea's defence, and there's a huge sign that's what's going to happen with his recent recurring injury worries

You don't need to make that move this week. Worst case scenario Trossard gets dropped again and you have Lundstram who comes in. Some people are even starting him this week. You can afford to hold this week and evaluate with 2 FT's.

Trossy boi will start though, dont you worry.

    4. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

I have Trossard. I'd prefer switching him to El Ghazi (winger) than McGinn (CM) for the same price, but I'm holding for GW2. Coach's post-match comments hinted at a huge home game debut for Trossard against THAT West Ham defence, so I'll start him and trust my bench for one more GW, then reassess with two FTs

Also encouraged by the fact that Lampard favoured Mount for no good reason in GW1. That's usually the sign of a nailed-to-be player. Would be an easier decision after GW2 anyway

I have Fraser in my current team along with Wilson and was contemplating over whether to save ft or get Martial in.

Yes Fraser to Martial after just 1 gw sounds a bit kneejerk but I'm anyway gonna take Fraser out next game for Martial with the amazing fixtures United have and Bou playing City.

Also, for this particular gw2, I see equal points potential for Fraser and Martial.

With price rises and points potential to consider, don't y'all think Fraser to Martial is worth doing this particular gw itself?

People jump on bandwagons and keep players to protect their squad value. Last season there were more transfers in the first 6 gws than the rest of the season.

To expand on my reply about regarding price changes. Why exactly are price changes part of the game? What positive do they bring. I only see negatives personally, it seriously contributes to template forming.

    1. People who dont own a form player (for instance Sterling or Martial right now) are additionally incentivised to bring in those players out of fear of being priced out and to increase team value.

    2. People who own players who have performed well over a period of time and thus increased in price are heavily disincentivised to remove those players because the price systems means you lose team value if you ever want them back in.

What exactly are positives with the fluctuating price system?

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 1 month ago

Adds another decision factor - risk vs reward of transfer timing.
Although in recent years has sometimes gone too batshit for my liking.

There isn't any positives , it is all just a hindrance, making the game harder, why would you want it to be easy?

      1. Brosstan
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

It doesnt make it hard, just annoying. Having non-decisions like "I cant really remove player X now because he has already increased .4 in value" makes the game easier, not harder.

Yeah but trying to catch players before you get priced out , then some thing bad happens in you ie bans injuries and now starting to spend points , or you get priced out and now you end up with a player you don't really want to find funds then makes the game harder no?

thinking about it... templates are way easier if there are no price rises.... everyone will have the exact same budget and exact same price list.... there will hardly ever be any differences between teams

the purpose is almost a fallback for fpl towers... it is very hard to price everyone at the exact value they will provide... for example, mahrez and vardy were cheap in the season leicester won the league. their price increased due to the demand in the market... it isn't perfect and they weren't up to the price that they were worth, but it is something at least

i agree with number 2 - i think you should get every single .1 increase in the bank when you sell a player. it works like that when you sell a player - why not when you buy?

I disagree completely. Template is forced by price changes for the reasons outlined above. If price changes werent a thing then someone could feasibly decide to sell a popular player to be ahead of the curve but the price system makes that not an option because you lose value.

Or you can use the value you "earned" to upgrade player x to player y.

              You are wrong about template.
With TV always at 100m you can without problem copy somebody else's team, now go and try to copy team of TV of 106m whrn yours is 101.5m - cant be done you are forced to find diffrrent pl

"You are wrong". Yea, no point discussing any more. Exactly the things you said in your post are reason why the price changes force template because people dont want to end up in that position late season.

Yet teams and values are different at end of the season, with constant value of players their would be much less variaety between squads - simple maths.

      2. fplars
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Not sure if I agree. The world's no 1 will not usually be because of superior squad or team value, but by doing the right choices week in, week out. Wildcarding to that team will perhaps help a poor player get a better squad structure, but for a decent player I wouldn't think the no 1 player has done something magic that you wouldn't had considered otherwise.

I think no price changes would mean fewer template teams as you'll be able to transfer out anyone on your team without thinking about losing money. The template forms because you get a core group of players that no one dares selling due to having too much value tied up in those players.

It’s usually based on a percentage of overall players making a transfer. There are a lot of players this year, which may suggest price changes will be slower.

I don’t think improving gameplay is the primary reason for price changes. Like all free to access internet products, FPL prioritises gambling-like techniques proven to increase usage time & therefore ad revenue.

The first thing a lot of people do in the morning and the last thing at night is scroll on FB/Twitter which is like a slot machine for dopamine. I’d guess checking FPL prices is one of the first things us addicts do in the morning, and checking who might fall/rise is one of the last things we do at night!

There would be so much more down time if there were no price changes. I certainly wouldn’t be considering transfer so much this gameweek if there weren’t.

    11. fplars
      • 14 Years

Totally agree, I see no positives.

Also, I don't really understand why it is universally accepted that the rules behind the price changes are hidden. We spend so much time planning our teams and transfers, and then your plan could be ruined by an unexpected price change that you had no way of predicting. Makes no sense to me. I don't recall ever seeing an article here about this either, which is weird when it is such an important part of the game.

My best guess is that part of the reason to keep the price changes is to generate site traffic throughout the week?

      1. Marty McFly
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 1 month ago

Not sure it’s accurate to say there’s no way of predicting it... there are a lot of free tools out there that help predict changes. You can also predict it based on recent performances (so without even checking I can tell you Sterling will be a high riser this week because his ownership was fairly modest and he scored 3 goals). Similarly, if a player has blanked for 3 weeks and has (mci, liv, tot) coming up, he probably won’t rise.

        1. fplars
          • 14 Years
          7 years, 1 month ago

Well, the free tools aren't part of the official game. It would be weird if the makers of the official game defended their hidden rules by pointing to these tools. Then they should make an official tool instead.

Predicting based on performances works for the obvious ones like when someone scores 3, and it's easiest this week as everyone starts at 0%. But the problem is the not so obvious ones, and you'll get a lot of them during the season.
And even what you are suggesting, that ownership plays a part in this, is not official. Of course everyone here knows it, but for a random player trying to figure this out based on the official information is simply not possible at all.

I'd like a mandatory -8 each week but you have 3 free transfers (no roll overs) ... if you don't manage your team weekly then you are going to lose out ... dead teams would be crippled

I don't have any issues with getting only half the profit when you sell a player .. I just don't pay any attention to TV as it's all about SV (if your strategy includes increasing SV for use later in season)

Some players (Rico, Adrian, Maitland Niles) who might lose their spots (bellerin, Daniels?!) but for the next three weeks or so it looks good to me.

One month until he starts training, but of course he is save for more than three weeks, you are right.... Zinchenko is a rotation risk I guess.

Most likely rolling with A. Hoping we'll get some news indicating a couple of the big guns will be back

An old story, which I just read. Pretty poor that most of the PL clubs don't pay a living wage. Clearly not enough money in the game. Fair play though to Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and West Ham for doing so.

A free transfer is like a plain bun. Some nutrition but not that tasty. 2fts is like having a juicy burger in it innit. If you want pickle, cheese, onion, ketchup/mustard, lettuce, tomato then wait a few weeks and hand over your wildcard at the counter. Thank you. R McD.

I am against beef burgers as they are bad for the environment and are a factor in climate change.

(Just kidding, but I know it will trigger some people on here)
