Teemu Pukki‘s (£6.5m) goal against Liverpool in Gameweek 1 already has Fantasy managers concerned about doubling up on the Reds’ defence this season.

Liverpool kept 21 clean sheets last year, more than any other side, but are yet to register one in 2019/20 after conceding on Friday night.

Doubling-up on the Reds’ defence had previously proved a popular tactic this summer.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is still the most fashionable of the Liverpool back-line, owned by 50% of managers for the first Gameweek.

Meanwhile, as the first deadline of the campaign passed, Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) sat in 34% of squads, and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) was in 24% of them.

Various combinations of these three defenders were also forming part of many a manager’s setup for the 2019/20 season.

12.3% of all Fantasy managers had both van Dijk and Robertson for Gameweek 1, 7% paired the Dutchman with Alexander-Arnold while 6.8% owned both full-backs.

However, after Liverpool’s opening day display, there are those who are worried about whether they should be so heavily invested in Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

Alisson is now set to be out for several weeks with a muscle problem

The injury to Alisson (£6.0m), expected to be out for at least a few weeks, is also giving some Fantasy managers cold feet about last season’s best back-line.

In this latest article, we will look at the data from Gameweek 1 to see how much we should be worried about Liverpool’s defence moving forward.

As this uses information from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 campaign can access it in full.

How did Norwich do offensively on Friday night?

Lessons learned from Gameweek 1

Save FT, have 0.5ITB? And Play Kelly or Smith?

    Ryan
    TAA VVD Smith Zinchenko
    Salah Sterling Siggy Perez
    Vardy King

    Button Dendoncker Kelly Greenwood

Yep, save. And probably Kelly - pretty similar though, that's just what my gut says.

In the Draft game, my goalkeepers are Alisson and Heaton, and I have second pick in this week's transactions. Will probably keep Alisson for when he returns, but in the meantime, should I:

    A) Play Heaton with what could be a fairly kind run of fixtures
    B) Attempt to swap Heaton for Adrian

    Cheers!

A - you arguably have the best premium and best budget keepers. Save, otherwise someone else will nab Heaton.

Probably the same score by the end, but a 4.5M defender has a chance of rising in value if you pick the right one.

    Heaton/Pope
    VVD Digne Ake (Hanley, Rico)
    Sterling Salah Moura Martial Perez
    Wood Wilson (Wickham)
Do anything or save transfer? Heaton or Pope in goal?
I'm thinking to maybe do Wood to Pukki? Any other ideas?

Heaton, quite like the Pukki punt. Wood has two tough games in next three and shares goals with Barnes.

He seems like the kind of player who will score whenever he has the chance. I didn't follow Norwich last season but from what I've read he's pretty clinical. 29 goals in 43 games last season. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll do the same in the Premier League, but could be worth the punt

I'd save the transfer and personally like the look of Pope, but if you have bought 2 keepers for fixture rotation then I guess it has to be Heaton.

My idea was to rotate but Pope looked good last game and could get a few save points against Arsenal. I'd be surprised if he gets a clean sheet, though. Bournemouth were lacking something up front against SHU...hmmm...maybe stick to the plan and rotate them..

I’m looking for the best 6.5M striker similar to many other I am sure!

I've always rated him as a good goalscorer and think Burnley could have a good season. Fixtures from GW5 look great & Arsenal (with a shaky defence)/Wolves (Europa League fatigue possibly) don't seem certain of CS vs. Burnley either.

The only problem I see with Maguire's goal threat, which he has always had, is who is going to deliver the quality of set pieces for him at Utd? Mata and Young are the best deliverers of free kicks/corners but they are not regular starters.

Price increases are great because if you manage your team effectively then you should build TV, doing so makes you stronger than those that don’t

Fear of losing value by transferring out players is ridiculous - you should always be gaining on the new players

        Short term punts maybe

But effectively using your FTs should be mid term moves as such the player you drop is likely to be hitting a difficult stage and stand a chance to lose value

The player brought in is because they stand a chance of hitting form or have hit form and will therefore rise

It’s only this player for this player and back to the first player ridiculous moves that become a problem

If the punt is so good then the points will come at a cost

It provides an additional element that makes the game more interesting

It wasn’t to disprove just to say that it’s a more interesting decision to make, and if it’s planned correctly you should always do ok price wise. Of course it’s a consideration but fear of losing value shouldn’t stop what is a positive move for greater points and in turn further value will likely be gained

    2. Eytexi
      • 7 Years

The sentiment on here being "you should bring in Martial because he might rise" and "sterling non-owners could be forced out if they dont bring him in before price rise" is proof enough that the price system forces a template. Template forming makes the game extremely boring and price rises contribute.

yes it still happens but becomes much more specific as managers have different amounts to spend and player prices become more incremental, so much less universal movement towards certain rising players

Very much agree with you. The budget enablers in 15/16 of Mahrez, Vardy, Alli and Ighalo meant a template was quickly established and the game simply became about which premium players you had around this core of budget enablers who nobody was gonna lose due to the value tied up in them.

        These comments are ridiculous

It’s community scare mongering which is the issue here

I guess it adds a second dilemma but it should be a consideration and it drives to hits for those that are impatient so that adds another element cost vs reward

Sounds like more of an issue with people's comments of who we 'should and shouldn't' be bringing in.
Increasing player value early is a legitimate strategy to make it easier to afford valuable players later on in the season.

Best managers are rewarded in points and TV for being brave and staying ahead of the curve when making transfers both in & out.

Who cares about value tied up in Felipe Anderson is he is clearly not performing - good manager will sell and re-invest profit. Bad manager will have either no profit or no balls to sell.

One the major plus's that the game has.
Template enough as it is and adds a degree of tactics to the game that most others don't have.

A few weeks before the season started someone told me if you finished in the top 500k the following season you can't buy players over 10m. I fell for this and i am stuck with a terrible team. This is not fair!!

I like Pukki a lot. He was automatic last season and also had a strong summer.

Other than City, I think he can still rack up points against Chelsea.

I'm currently on just Kane up top and was waiting to see who emerged from Pukki or Kean, will likely add another striker in a few weeks time.

Nuno seems pretty keen to progress in this competition and given they will likely face Torino (5-0 up currently) in the final round before group stage this may be their final opportunity in the competition to rest some players.

Yeah they are but...Lot's of folks made the same slip as the poster last season. Think it's because the other chips can be cancelled. Also plenty think Free Hit means an extra transfer for one week (a free -4 which forums all call 'hits') not a one week wildcard. They should just re-name it.

I have 4 punts in my team that didn’t really come off as I’d hoped - Bilva, Moura, Benteke + King..

Benteke + King were both invisible with not a single shot between them but play Sheff Utd and Villa this week..

Moura got an assist but I was hoping for more and should at least start again against City.

Bilva I thought would be nailed and didn’t play at all.. May or may not start against Spurs but is also likely to drop in price!

Which, if any, should I get rid of yet? I have 1.0 ITB too.

I don't rate Deeney, especially after his performance. Your plan sounds good, looking at those upcoming fixtures for the players mentioned above. Don't know if it's worth taking a hit to transfer out both BOU players out unless you're after a certain player.

How many players started GW1 ... there are now 5.95 million, so wondering if new players have no effect on the price

Ser Harold Kane at 0.12% in the captain's poll. With 8 shots in gw 1, I can see him scoring vs City and getting 9 points, happy owner.

Funny that 0.12% have managed to vote for him when he isn't an option to select on the poll! 😀

Kane's just not in the same class as Buendía (I had to look up who he is, but you can vote for him)

I reckon he'll bang in 30 goals plus with a few assists to boot. He's out of the traps fit and hungry, and there's plenty of rubbish teams to eviscerate.

30 goals in the season! I'll settle for a goal and assist at the weekend.
