The Scoutcast crew are reluctant to make drastic changes for Gameweek 2 after spending most of the summer carefully constructing their Fantasy Premier League squads for the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

This week’s crew of Joe, Az, Luke and guest Holly (aka @FFCommunity_) are hoping that patience proves a virtue as they attempt to stick by their chosen players.

But with all three promoted sides impressing in Gameweek 1, including Norwich’s talismanic striker Teemu Pukki, they are already hatching plans for change in the weeks ahead.

What to do with Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and the Premier League’s newest faces are among the issues covered.

Our podcast quartet also find time to ponder when may be the best time to wave goodbye to a player.

The next month’s best differential and clean sheet prospects are also considered as they take in the key events from the first Gameweek of the season and look ahead to what may be a difficult second round of top flight action.

What if.. Next week someone like haller /Jiminez explode or Rashford scores a brace again? Wouldn't you rather save a transfer and use 2 to upgrade instead of getting pukki in right now?

Mate I am in the same position

You have got to give King a try against Villa at least

Then maybe look also at Barnes or Wood they might be more sensible picks

      Pukki is tempting though...

they have a plethora of options in behind Haller to play. West Ham fans envisage rotation all season behind Haller, especially if a player loses form. Fornals was the 'nailed' player to miss out last GW.

I'm a Hammers fan and I agree with you. We have Anderson, Antonio, Fornals, Lanzini and Yarmolenko for the 3 behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1. Wilshere and Snodgrass can also play there if needed too. I'd say the only one of them that is well and truly nailed is Anderson

Excluding captaincy potential (which is rare for this price range), assuming you stick with a player long term and don't chop & change to try and capture form -

You're much better off going with a premium 6.0 - 7.0 defender than midfielder or forward. Stats wise, five at the back could even make more sense

    1. TheTinman
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

One thing you don’t consider in that is the fact you can’t have a £4m midfielder or Striker. So you actually spend more on the defence than you think.

4.0m players should generally be avoided anyway (the odd exception e.g. Wan B least season)
You need to have a reasonably strong bench to go far

Incorrect. I’ve had a couple of decent ranks and always have at least one bench fodder.

Even then 4.5 defenders are normally much better than 4.5 mids/forward. Its not as straight forward as 6.0 def vs 6.0 mid/fwd

On my FPL draft team I ended up with something close to the ultimate big 6 at the back

        Ederson
        Robbo VVD Laporte Digne Pereira

It's my experiment to see how it pans out, It's a zero captaincy set and forget format after all.

    4. F4L
      • 11 Years

if Liverpool defenders get 200 points again, or there about that's 5 PPG roughly of course. Laporte might push them, but then the rest of premium defenders will be fortunate to hit 160 in my opinion, so 4 PPG.

id argue its definitely more effective to have the extra 6.5 mid or striker in a 3-5-2/3-4-3 line up instead of a premium defender, and try to own them during their purple patches during the season, which could average considerably higher than 4-5 PPG over a 5 match streak per se.

Agree if you keep long term, but hopping on and off form attacking players in this bracket is necessary to get a really good rank. Keep one player all season in a £6.5m slot and they might get 130 pts. Rotate that slot across 4 or 5 form players and could be 250+

Yes fair points, if you're not sticking and trying buy in the form players, it will prob pan out better to spend in mid/ forward areas

Although sometimes I've found these transfers to be hits and not always given priority with injuries, club rotation & cups etc

        1. Andy_Social

There were many long and tedious threads about this in pre-season, and a huge amount of wilful misunderstanding. I'll just try to repeat my case as briefly as I can.
It does make sense to START with 5 premiums at the back - ones who at the moment look like they'll rack up points over the season such as Pingissimus' back line there ^.
The reason it's good to start with them is that they are secure buys for their price. In midfield and attack if you want secure high-scorers you're paying 10m+, or at least 8m.

However, you don't maintain 5 at the back throughout the season. From the mid-price and maybe budget pack of mids and strikers, bandwagons will emerge, as will value 4.5 or 5m defenders. One of two 2FTs will enable you to lose a premium for a solid cheaper defender while hopping onto the winning mids/fwds. You might well find yourself with a very nice 3-5-2 after some time.

Later tonight we have a nice chance to see Liverpool and Chelsea in action again, with the teams facing off in the Super Cup Final.

What are you looking out for, from an FPL point of view?

Will it be a certain player or the more general lineups? Will you be watching to see how both defences perform?

As a Barkley owner I'm keen to see who gets the #10 spot between him and Mount. I expect Pulisic to come in for one of them.

Got to hasn't he? Barkley really isn't a left winger, no idea why he was put out there - spent the whole game trying to come back inside.

I wonder if whoever starts will be the second choice or the first choice - suspecting right now it's Mount who's preferred I'm sorry to say...

Ah that's right he did, didn't he.

Still, wouldn't be massively surprised to see someone like Alonso playing - just to give the back line some more aerial strength.

Barkley will either play as no. 10 or not at all. Not really goos on the wing and several natural players to play there. So it's still the same question, will it be him or Mount? I think shared gametime until Lamps decides who he likes more to be a regular...

Won’t be watching and won’t be reading too much into it.

Chelsea’s line up will likely be different to last weekend and different again to this weekend. Don’t think we will learn that much.

Liverpool’s line up may let us know if there will be any rotation, but think it’s more likely he will rest players for this game than the league game.

I don't know, but I'd guess the teams are contractually obliged to put out strong teams.

I'm agreeing with comments about Liverpool's defence - who starts and how they perform without Alisson. There are surely a lot of FPL managers revisiting their GW1 double up. You'd think TAA and Robbo will start v Southampton, but who lines up alongside VVD might by influenced by the lineup Klopp sends out tonight.

also king is not really a striker. I dont care about hits, pukki scored against liverpool so he can score against anyone. Could easily have got 2. And king did nothing against a poor sheffield...

If that's your strategy then do your thing. Just my opinion. Also keep in mind Pukki has Man City and Chelsea (who knows if the D can get sorted out) coming up. I know he scored against Pool ar Anfield. I don't doubt he'll score against Newcastle. But your essentially 12 in the hole wuth another hit to break even.

funny how a price change can change your thinking, bringing in Martial now (at 7.6) makes my next 2/3 transfers a lot more complicated - looks like I'll have to give Moura another 2 chances; then if (when 😀 ) Martial is 8.0 before GW4 I can make a swap which doesn't involve any 0.1 nonsense.

Basically there was some advantage to be had in transferring Martial in at 7.5 (the 0.1 rise is half way towards a SV increase, the 0.1 is a buffer against sales if people decide to do so, and if he becomes part of the 'template' ie.scores well then your team has better SV also) - but now that the rise has happened there probably isn't much point in making the move with Wolves away.

That's how I see it anyway, I know most will just say 'points over prices rises' or whatever, but no-one can say definitively who the best 7-8m midfielder will be over the next 6 weeks, but it could easily be Martial and that 0.1 'lost' could be important - but thanks to that price rise I'll have to wait to find out now, I think. Definitely TMI there 😀

You're not going to be transferring in players at 0.5 intervals for much longer, but in gw1 it definitely can be annoying.

    On a Wildcard (long story)

Is it a massive sacrifice towards Salah to have a midfield of Sterling, KDB, Mane and Mcginn?

I know he's a strong captain choice this weekend but I'm setting up beyond this GW.

This also allows Kane or Auba to top.

Essentially 4 premiums without much compromise to the rest of my team.

VVD, Coleman and AWB plus 2 near perfectly rotating wingbacks.

KDB is a holder price point for Son or Pepe, which then allows Kane to Auba if needs be.

    3. F4L

City seem more immune because of their quality in depth. Liverpool don't have that. I mean, last season KDB, Aguero, Mendy, Fernandinho and Silva were injured for various lengths of time, and none seemed liked a considerable loss. Sane has just been ruled out for 6-7 months and City still can afford to have B.Silva on the bench.

With the amount of games they have / will have played in the last 12 months and as the season goes on, it seems a probability that a key player will get a serious injury. Not wishing that on anyone.

City have more strength in depth but a long term injury to laporte would be very damaging and with sane out loss of sterling could be compared to liverpool losing Salah (sort of)

Working on a potential wildcard team for GW3. Obviously prone to revision at the moment but what are people's thoughts on the following:

    Pope/Button

    Robbo/Laporte/Soyuncu/Montoya/4m (lundstrom?)

    Salah/Sterling/KDB/Martial/Mcginn

    Pukki/Sharp/Greenwood

0.8 million still to play with somewhere depending on price changes. Not sure if it's best spent on upgrading Mcginn, Sharp or one of the defenders.

My thinking is that KDB can easily become Son or Pepe if one of them starts getting on a roll.
