Captain Sensible

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

What is the popular wc plan this year? Any significant fixture swings?

Ive planned all the way up to GW 8 international break. So then I’ll either WC or reassess

I think after GW4 is not bad, and it is during international break too. But if my team looks OK, I will try to keep it as long as possible

My view is I think you could argue for:
post gw3 for maximum value building (Friday deadline in one of two busiest price change week of seasons) + man city/chelsea/spurs assets and everyone else fairly stable over medium term.
Post gw5 to get rid of a pool player, bring back in wolves players/Burnley. 5 weeks is probably optimum for sensible balanced assessment of others.
Or much later on for managing World club championship.
I reckon many will do gw4 because of international break but I think week before or after potentially better

Which is the value building week? International breaks were dead for movement last year or is this the week before that?

Week before international break. The next two gameweeks after this one are the busiest price change wise pretty much every season, but there's a Friday night deadline next week so that means that when most people make transfers will be counted in changes as week after.

Postponing first WC is a good idea (unless you get lots of injuries or new Leicester's rise) because then you can most likely postpone second WC until the last gws of the season when there are DGWs etc.

One week at a time for me, so far so good. It's injuries that get me every season so I don't much point in plans that go further than a couple of weeks.

Can never predict far ahead but he's certainly nailed in the Wolves and my first-team squad for now. As an attacking midfielder, in the hole behind Jimi and Jota, he's a far better FPL option than any other 4.5-5,0 midf.

Usually go for early WC and do well, would rather wait a week but might be worth it with Bernardo and Targett issues. Already had rotation risks in Origi and KWP.

    Ederson Krul
    Robertson Digne KWP Targett Rico
    Salah BSilva Martial Pérez Dendoncker
    Kane King Origi

    To

    Adrian Heaton
    TAA Digne KWP Montoya Rico
    Salah Sterling Martial McGinn Dendoncker
    Auba(FT to Kane wk3) Pukki 4.5striker

Think I would but that sterling price rise is a killer and stops KWP to Zinchenko!

Same situation here mate... I am on Murray, would wait until Maupay starts ahead of him but definitely interested in bringing him

I hope Murray starts again and gets a return, after that I'm good to sell. Let's just hope for that, not in our hands anyway, cheers!

With a ton of stats still the most important is left out:

With midweek clashes, how did that affect Salah's minutes in weekend matches in 2018/19?

    My guess is not much.

How did it affect his points scoring is the most important, granted that's normally tied into how many minutes one gets

Who to put first on the bench?
    a) Greenwood
    b) Cathcart
    c) Rico

    Cheers

    Can't decide on Captian:

    Pope
    Robertosn, V Dijk, Digne, Zinchenko
    Siggy, Salah, Sterling, Martial,
    King, Pukki

    (Heaton, Rico, Dendonker, Greenwood)

Unsure if Liverpool will be firing full power after a late game Wednesday. I'm tempted with Pukki!

Now's the time to take the risk, though I think both Sterling and Salah will get points again

    Ryan
    VVD - Trent - Dunk - Diop
    Salah(c) - Sterling - Perez - Anderson(!)
    Vardy - Jota

    Begovic - Neves - Holebas - Greenwood

    A. Anderson > Zaha
    B. Stick
    C. any other ideas?

No news on Anderson, it will be a last-minute decision.

Your team looks solid for next GW, although I’m not 100% sure Salah will start (he only had 2weeks training pre-season and played back to back 90-90-120 minutes in the last three matches)

Would you sell Kane for Auba this GW and bring Kane back next gameweek?
Give me reasons not to do that.

No reason not to do it apart from using your transfer

However I do fancy Kane to score vs city

The main argument against would simply be that you don't know what other issues might occur between now and next week. If you pick up injuries/suspensions etc then you may not be able to get Kane back, or have to take a hit to do it. I'm erring on the side of caution this season, so for me I wouldn't use a transfer to take out a fit, nailed on premium striker.

    What to do with

    Barkley and King

Surely a Norwich double up of Buendia and Pukki is sheer madness?

        Mine is

        Pope/Ryan
        VVD Laporte Ake Dunk Coleman
        Salah Sterling Barkley Trossard Dendoncker
        King Kane Greenwood

For my draft team, how would you rank the following mids in terms of priority

A: Lingard (wol) -- tough fixture but decent long term buy
B: Mount (LEI) --- decent fixture but will he start in the medium term
C: Gudmunson (ars) -- like him but tough fixture so not high priority this gw
D: Trossard (WHM) -- was hyped up but will he start?
E: Mcginn (BOU) -- tempting, nailed on...is he on pens?
F: Robinson (CRY) -- potential OOP..should start this gw but not sure long term
G: Beundia (NEW) -- playmaker, pretty nailed on in attacking team but havnt seen him much

I am currently leaning towards Lingard and Robinson with a view to shift out Robinson when he has a tough fixture

Yeh usually it's default to go attacker over defender, however seeing how united defended vs chelsea I can't see Jota getting much from the game in comparison to the better chance montoya has at an attacking return. I am also a united fan so might be why my judgement is clouded

Not sure the United defence is that scary at the moment. Myname had it right though - play both if possible.

Thanks Andy, with my team as follows I don't think I can start both:

          TAA / VVD / DIGNE

          Martial / Perez / Sterling / Salah / Trossard

          Wilson / Jota

          (Montoya / Rico / Greenwood)

This whole Salah or Auba captain thing would've been so much easier if Chelsea just gave up. What kind of club wants to win trophies anyway?

Liverpool were closer to giving up actually. Which would have even been a better reason to captain Salah 😉

    Ryan
    VVD
    Salah - Sterling - Martial - Perez
    Kane - Wesley

    Play 2 of these:
    a) Zouma
    b) Lundstram
    c) Aké
    d) Söyüncü

    e) King or Dendoncker?
