Captain Sensible

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

Hoping I have a good week. Got 73 GW1 which isn’t bad but not great compared to some scores.
Tbh my team did really well considering four completely blanked, 1 did what I expected, 1 didn’t even play, three got good returns and two under performed.
Really need Moura, Trossard and the Bournemouth boys + vardy to do something this week

Salah blank and an Auba haul and I'll likely be in the top 10k. Other way round I'll likely plummet to over 100k.

Mane is going to be the big scorer this weekend I reckon.

Going to the QPR v Bristol City game tomorrow as its just down the road from me, so will miss a lot of the drama unfolding on here tomorrow afternoon.

      1. KujaliaFC
        • 14 Years

The worst is when you take a hit for a player who then promptly blanks.

      2. The Overthinker
        • 9 Years

If the player coming in is for a long term, then I don't see it as a loss

      3. Nomar
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 10 days ago

But you're assuming the players you transfer in don't score considerably more than the players you sold.

Sometimes it's the right thing to do cos you get rid of player(s) who are contributing nothing to your team and you replace them with productive ones instead.

Obviously I wouldn't recommend it every week, though.

But, yeah, sometimes changes that result in points hits can change your season for the better.

so I scored 84 without Sterling and without using a chip, but a lot of people did well. Hopefully Barkley and Perez will perform better. Saved a FT, so looking forward optimistically, can do "mini WC" for -4 before GW3 if needed. My top watchlist is Mahrez(City attacker for 8.5 is gold) and United assets. No room for Sterling unfortunately. Good luck everyone!!!

This is the exact situation I'm in. Own Auba + Salah but no Sterling.. Planning on captaining Auba. Sterling made a 20 point difference last week, would have been on 86 instead of 66 😐

Auba was pretty consistent, albeit not that explosive, in home games last season - especially towards the end - so I think you'll get some form of attacking returns. If I owned him, he'd be my pick this week.

There's now talk of Adrian being an injury doubt meaning potentially Liverpool having to play a really dodgy keeper who has not played with the 1st team before - so I'd say captaining Liverpool defenders is not the way to go right now.

I know it's for fodder but isn't it better to pick someone who is lower owned? Button has already been subbed out by almost 40k people so isn't he likely to drop faster in price compared to other fodder gks? If you have Ryan then he is a solid pick but Ryan's ownership is lower than Ederson, DDG or Alisson

For this with Heaton and Pope which one are you playing this week?

I’m currently on Heaton because of home advantage but swaying towards Pope because Arsenal away might not be that bad for Burnley?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
      7 years, 10 days ago

If you have both then you have to go Heaton otherwise you've just wasted 0.5?

      1. Bodini
        • 11 Years

Not necessarily, Pope will have really bad fixtures like GW4 against Liverpool where I would definitely rather play Heaton (Palace)

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
          7 years, 10 days ago

Fair enough, I don't rotate simply because a lot of 4.5 GK hauls are against teams id bench them against with an unlikely pen save or multiple saves

I bought Heaton alongside pope so I could rotate them. I'm assuming you did the same. So do you prefer ars or BOU? Maybe you should've just gone with pope+0.5

      1. Bodini
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 10 days ago

I did. So maybe I should just stick to the plan until further info available.

Heaton. They probably both concede this gw but heaton pulled out some great saves vs spurs too. He's just as likely to get save points as Pope but more likely to get a CS

I'm pretty calm with my team atm, I mean pretty upset with Guilbert and Robinson but I'm giving the latter another chance and the former was meant for sub anyway.

My only concern is whether to start Ings or Lundstram for GW2.

I didn't watch Lund but he's been positive here. Thoughts?

It was Robinson vs McGinn for me then I went for Robinson since a lot of people calling McGinn yc magnet, feel quite gutted seeing McGinn scores and Robinson blanks

But it's just one game, you might feel better after a while when McGinn is suspended and Robinson has banged in a few goals. Or not... but we'll see. I have Robinson and watching the situation but not overly concerned yet - especially as he's my 5th mid so isn't expected to return every week (and shouldn't be IMO for that price in a promoted side).

But to answer your qn, personally I would play Ings. Liverpool haven't looked solid, plus potential hangover from midweek. Lundstram looking good value but ceiling is much higher with Ings.

My initial thoughts exactly, it's just that comments here about Lund that gave me second thoughts. I guess I'm playing Ings with Lund as first sub then

    2 options:
    1. Captain Salah and play it safe and rely on the other 10 to allow you catch up with your rivals.

    2. Captain Auba and take the risk and hope Salah doesn't do as good.

As much as I would love to go 2, I just think 1 is a safer option.
