Captain Sensible

Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are the three teams being considered for the Gameweek 3 captaincy.

They face Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal respectively, and the lack of clean sheet potential for each of those opponents has some Fantasy Premier League managers scratching their heads.

In one sense there is plenty of choice for the armband in Gameweek 3, but a spread of potentially viable options can also increase the risk of falling behind.

As ever, we have assessed all the candidates based on their individual form and the defensive capabilities of their upcoming opponents in Captain Sensible.

As this article includes data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 campaign can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday morning

Harry Kane (£11.0m) is the people’s choice for the Gameweek 3 captaincy after he won the latest poll.

The Spurs forward claimed a 38.8% share of the vote this week ahead of Newcastle’s trip to north London.

It seems likely that his backers were swayed more by his Gameweek 1 display than the largely anonymous outing against Manchester City.

That is completely understandable given a meeting with Aston Villa is likely to bear more resemblance to a clash with Newcastle than visiting the reigning Premier League champions.

Against Villa, Kane topped the Gameweek 1 charts for shots in the box and scored twice.

This week’s runner up is Raheem Sterling (£12.2m), as Manchester City prepare for an away match at Bournemouth.

The England international currently shares the summit of the Premier League goal-scoring charts with Norwich’s Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) on four goals, having failed to blank yet so far this season.

That has led to 29% of the voters in our poll backing Sterling for the Gameweek 3 captaincy.

Bournemouth are certainly favourable opposition too, having failed to keep a clean sheet in either of their 2019/20 matches.

Furthermore, both of these were against newly-promoted sides Sheffield United and Aston Villa. That should see Manchester City prove too much for the Cherries.

Salah’s stock has fallen somewhat after Liverpool’s poor display at Southampton

Some way off in third place in the poll is Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Salah (£12.5m).

The fixture is definitely a favourable one for Liverpool’s attackers given that Arsenal kept the fewest number of clean sheets, but the captain interest looks to be elsewhere.

While Sterling and Kane are both sitting on more than 30% in the poll, Salah has just 6% backing at the time of writing.

It seems likely that the Gameweek 2 blank, in which Liverpool were severely tested by Southampton, has played a part in this.

Just behind Salah in fourth place is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m) who has a 3.8% share.

After a seven-point haul in Gameweek 1, the Belgian international registered two assists and maximum bonus the following weekend to take home 11 points.

De Bruyne’s creativity is the key factor in his appeal, as well as reliability of returns for someone who seems nailed-on in this Manchester City side.

De Bruyne is seen as the alternate Manchester City option at this stage

However, the fact that he is not viewed as much of an ‘explosive’ option compared to Sterling, is probably why on a handful of Fantasy managers are considering him for the Gameweek 3 captaincy.

Creeping into the conversation already is Pukki, who lit up the transfer market this week following his hat-trick against Newcastle.

3.4% of the voters believe that he can continue his hot form against a Chelsea side still searching for its first clean sheet of the season.

Another in-form option is Anthony Martial (£7.7m), who scored his second goal of the season against Wolves in Gameweek 2.

The returning Son Heung-min (£9.5m) has been selected by 2.3% in the poll, although what role he will play on Sunday afternoon remains to be seen.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.6m) are the only other assets with more than 1% support in the poll.

Please someone talk me out of this...

    Salah & King > KDB & Bobby (-4)

Salah on pens, some free kicks and corners. Ideally you would want him over a long term.

The reason I’m not going Salah/Mane.

Does not make sense this because some have Kane with a fodder defence.

Guess it comes down to whether you want a loaded midfield with Salah, KDB and Sterling, strong defence and budget forwards.

For this Gw, we can guess Salah and Kev will score similarly. Bobby would have to score over 6 points to justify the hit. The odds are against that. In the longer term the latter combo might outscore the former, but in that case you can do the second transfer next week without the hit. so Salah>Kev, for now, would be sufficient.

If Son plays, does it not give Kane even more potential to score points?
He is a very good passer of ball.
Only 1 point difference from an assist to a goal for a forward...

I think Kane will have a shoot on sight policy this weekend. He will be smarting from not winning the golden boot the last two seasons and will see this as a good opportunity to put himself in the early reckoning.

But from my memories of last season when son plays, Kane is a little deeper allowing the likes of son to make runs past him?

This Gw, I think you have to take the Lolcastle effect into account. It'll be a duck shoot for Kane.
Longer term, it might be trickier to decide which of the 2 to have.

I brought Mount in as I think he has nudged ahead of Barkley (who wasn't brought on with Chelsea chasing the win). He has played 90 mins twice, presses high up the pitch, takes a lot of shots, is on set pieces and has a couple of promising fixtures. At 6.1 you can't expect too much but the signs look promising.

    My WC team:

    Ederson
    TAA - AWB - Digne - Soyuncu
    KDB - Sterling - Mane - Martial
    Pukki - Jota

    4.0 - Lundstram - Cantwell - Greenwood

    1. Going Ederson over Pope as I cant find any other City def apart from Laporte(cant afford) who's nailed.
    2. I'll be having a three-way rotation between Soyuncu, Lund and Cantwell based on fixtures.
    3. Barnes will come in for Jota in gw5.
    4. I'm open to changing Soyuncu to any other better 4.5m def.

Thoughts? Any inputs on this team?

    KANE-gate

Isn't all this talk about "Kane dropping deep", "Kane hasn't impressed" just a classic overthinking trap that experienced fantasy managers do (overmanagement), and a typical occasion for the casuals to gain points on "our" behalf?

At the same time, I feel it's a bit risky to own him as well... means no KdB

    1. Miguel Sanchez
      • 10 Years

We are probably all overthinking it this week, suspect there won't be much between the scores of Sterling, Kane/Son with KDB and Salah/Mané not far behind. As long as you have three of the aforementioned players you should be on for a good score this GW.

Tend to agree. In the cases of both Kane and Kevin, the 'dropping deep' moniker is more distracting than helpful.

Yeah. And besides – the Kane we saw against Villa is the Kane we now. Might do nothing for 88 mins and then get a brace. Price rices made me stick to my WC plan with Kane, was on the verge of changing him to rashford + kdb but 0.1 short. All for the better – now the choice is made 🙂 (have martial anyways)

Absolutely, when I first started playing the game Kane captain at home to a de facto Championship side would have been a no-brainer. As it is I don't even own him!

Ndombele or Ceballas worth a punt or too early yet?

I want both. Currently have NDombele and he’s doing well so far. Ceballos was awesome on the weekend

The big WC question I can't settle on.

Mane and Laporte or Salah and Zinc?

3 of those 4 are nailed until your next WC; only Zinc isn't.

West Ham didn’t look like scoring at Brighton, but Watford also have been blunt too + without deeney. So diop close by

    Hello,
    too weak defence or not?

    Pope
    Zinchenko Dunk Lundstram
    Martial Salah Sterling KdB Ceballos
    Kane Pukki

    Button Kelly Rico Greenwood

Kelly and Rico both are dodgy picks imo and Zinchenko could be aswell within next month. I'd make some changes there

    Please suggest

Took a -4 to get Kane, kdb and Rashford.

    Playing 532 this week

    Heaton
    VVD Robbo Digne Zinchenko Lundstram
    Pérez Sterling (vc) KDB
    Kane (c) Rashford

    Dedonker Norwood Greenwood

Would you change the line up or bench order?

5-3-2 never seems to work out for me. The bigger scorers are normally in midfield and attack. Downgrade Robbo to KWP and get Pukki up front who’s on fire at the moment

    Play one of:

    b. Lundstram (LEI)
    c. Soyucu (shu)

Bookies odds of a clean sheet suggest c but I'm not so sure ...

    Button Heaton
    Digne Robertson VVD Montoya Kelly
    Sterling Salah Fraser Siggy Dendoncker
    Deulofeu Wilson Greenwood

Would you WC? I’ve already done Fraser, Siggy, Wilson > McGinn, KDB, Pukki for -4.

I don't know, it seems a bit late to do the wc now if you've missed a lot of the price rises so far.

    Morning Guys. Ok Wc is this;

    Pope (Button)
    Digne VVD AWB (Lundo Kelly)
    Mane Sterling Martial Cantwell Mount
    Kane Pukki (Martinelli) 1.4ITB

Cant lose Kane for that Newcastle
game. Mount is a one week punt. Cant go any longer than this week without KDB.

Next week will do Kane / Mount to KDB / Rashford.

    What do we think?

Wouldn't have two 4.0m players or a one week punt on a wildcard personally. Could work though.

Morning all, couple of quick questions

    1) Who to start from Pope (wol) or Heaton (EVE)
    - Villa playing at home but everton are the better team
    - wolves played last night but playing at home

    2) Who to start from VVD (ARS) or King (MCI)
    - Already have TAA so doubling up on defence against arsenal seems odd
    - King on set pieces so always a chance of a pen
