A cost-effective fourth midfielder that can rival the premium options for points potential is often the key that unlocks a perfect Fantasy Premier League team.

Managers across the world will be searching for the best candidates for this position over the international break, especially those on a Wildcard.

In order to find them, we have compared a handful of midfielders priced at £6.5m or below to see how they got on in the first four Gameweeks.

The key is to find which of them is offering sustainable output from Gameweek 5 onwards which means analysing their underlying statistics.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Who carries the best goal threat?

Lessons learned from Gameweek 4

    Ederson
Lundstram - van Dijk - Digne - Dunk
    KDB - Salah - McGinn - Sterling
    King - Rashford

    Cantwell, Greenwood, Boly

    Ederson -> Pope & Rashford/King -> Abraham/Barnes?

Is it worth keeping Cantwell and McGinn?

    Thanks

Who has the best FPL team name?

I went with "Digne get an agenda", in tribute to David Brent from The Office and the Do You Not Know Who Eric Hitchmough facebook group.

Anyone else particularly pleased with their team name this year?

      Hahaha I like!

I went with "Twee Arnold!", which is Dutch for "Two Arnold" and rhymes with the TV Show "Hey Arnold". And I did that because I recently moved to NL and I captained Alexander-Arnold (double points!) for the first two GWs (double GWs!). 😀 but that requires a little too much explanation hahah

When we go to Malta we tend to stay at the Qawra Palace Hotel.

As a QPR fan, calling my team Qawra Palace Rangers made perfect sense.

My previous team name was The Disco Horses. Just so abstract I loved it.

His PPM is decent though. So the key with Martial is hold him while he is fit, rack up the points, then ditch as soon as he gets injured (even for a hit).

      I know

Was all against him preseason but became convinced by United fans late on. Still hold him and 6 plus ppm is right up there of course.

Think he’s one you hold while he’s hot then ditch when not. Still got a few of weeks grace for me if he starts.

        1. George Sillett
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

The template is ever evolving and changing on a weekly basis and different players have different views on what the template is . This statement therefore cannot possibly be correct.

They are often very similar with the odd different player. I would say that these teams are good for above average points otherwise there would be no increases in rank as a consequence.

              1. AndyCook
                6 years, 10 months ago

Any active team should be good for above average points given the number of inactive teams with injuries and suspensions

                • 6 Years
                6 years, 10 months ago

That is why I want to be different to the template.

If I had the template which has been running for at least 3 weeks then catch up would be the order for many gameweeks.

                1. George Sillett
                  • 10 Years
                  6 years, 10 months ago

You're missing the point though. That template has changed every gameweek. If you think that it has remained the same then yes you would be playing catch up but this simply isn't the case. Martial was template 3 weeks ago as were teams including Josh King and Wilson . They certainly aren't now.

            2. George Sillett
              • 10 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

And that team put up includes Ashley Barnes as a third striker. An equal number of other teams put up here still only go with 2 forwards.

                • 6 Years
                6 years, 10 months ago

I never said it was a bad team but majority are picking more or less the same team.

You either follow or be different.

Who do you think are the differentials to go after at this point?

I can’t see many strikers, and it’s tough to move on the big midfield 3 - so it’s really just the 4th mid spot I see as the one with flexibility

        1. FOO FIGHTER

It depends on what formation you want to play too.

I'm currently set up for 4-4 - 2, but current trends are leaning towards a 3-5-2.

I have Donkey as my 5th mid at the moment, but changing to 3-5-2 means downgrading one of my defenders to upgrade my 5th mid.

I follow Arsenal and if I had Ceballos in my team id be quietly confident, certainly with the up coming fixtures. He's been superb whilst on the pitch and can see him getting more minutes going forward, quickly becoming a fan favourite too. There are goals against Watford & Villa, good chance a few Arsenal band wagons will emerge.

    4. AndyCook
      6 years, 10 months ago

I am an Arsenal fan and I’d be holding off, having said that if you have no more than 5.7 he’s worth the gamble because he is the only one at that sort of price with a potentially large upside. The team is too prone to rotation, obvious competition from Ozil in behind the strikers and then at risk in a 4-3-3 with Xhaka, Torreira, Guendouzi all relative favourites of Emery’s. He’s a wait and see if you are not short on money

I think people wildcarding during IB are making two mistakes

    1) Picking Aguero over Sterling when they should pick triple City offensively

    2) Not including Martial and team structure not allowing getting in Martial without dismantling the team

    Thoughts?

      1) Budget is only £100m so very hard to have 3 City attackers.

      2) Not sure Martial is worth it and if you your unicorn of 3 City attackers then how can you afford him as well anyway?

I don't have Salah nor Mane. Went with Aguero over Salah for gw4. Will keep Aguero for as long as his.minutes are not managed. As soon as they get managed, getting Salah in is on the cards. But City look better offensively rn and a inform Aguero beats Salah and Mane in my book in terms of FPL points.

Only if Aguero's gametime is managed. Check the fixtures. City have way better fixtures than Liverpool at the moment.

Yes, I agree but generally, I am saying an in form Salah or Mané will beat an inform aguero in terms of fpl points regardless of fixtures, although based on the upcoming fixtures, Kun is expected to do better

Problem is there are many offensive players delivering the goods. While defenders have not been reliable. TAA is doing great. Everton okay but not more injuries. Other team not doing great. So one spot for mci defender is very valuable.

Not sure City will be as good defensively without Laporte. He is a leader. Same cannot be said for Otamendi/Stones/Fernandinho

      1) Triple City sounds great on paper, but when the cup competitions come in I'm pretty sure that rotation will soon kill that dream. I have a personal belief that City will prioritise the CL this year.

      2) Martial could be a great long term pick. However, there is no sign yet that ManU are worthy of taking too big a chance on so far. On the other side of the coin, Martial is priced higher than his obvious alternatives so you are right in that if you swap him out for a £6.5m mid then you might struggle to shoe horn him in should he run into form. So, I agree with you and will be sticking with him if he doesn't look like being out for more than 2 GWs.

At some point, one of Aguero or Sterling, most likely Aguero will be rotated. No doubt. But as for now its a good idea imo

Disagree on both points. Triple City attack is a strange decision when they have the best value defenders in the game. Martial is always injured and having a crock in your team is bad especially as European cup rotation is starting soon. United squad isnt deep enough to limit Martial's minutes so he will probably be injured half the time

Do we think “template” is an overly used word on here which sometimes is used in the wrong context?

A lot of WC teams on here often have template as a reply. I admit in the past I have been found quilty of that!

    So I Have two questions

    1) Are we using this word as a lazy response to a team
    2) Can a template team get in to the top 5k if everyone seems to be adapting that team?

The ideal WC based on the information we have now would imo look something like this (similar to the team I got now with a few changes)

    Pope Button
    TAA Digne Lowton Lundstram Kelly
    Sterling KDB Martial Mount Cantwell
    Aguero Abraham Pukki

Easy to get in Salah in case Aguero's minutes are managed by doing -> Aguero + Cantwell -> Fodder + Salah

For now I firmly believe Aguero looks the better option compared to Mane/Salah
