As Fantasy writers and managers, many of us place a lot of emphasis on underlying statistics in our research and articles.

Be it penalty box touches, attempts on goal or key passes, the key performance indicators (KPIs) in both attack and defence can help form our judgements on certain players and teams.

Of course, there is a subculture of Fantasy Premier League bosses who think the whole thing is a load of mind-cluttering claptrap and prefer to rely on the so-called ‘eye test’, gut instinct or basic figures such as goals scored and clean sheets.

There is a statistic that unites the two approaches: goal conversion rate.

This is a KPI that deals in cold, hard fact and tells us how clinical players are with the chances they are afforded.

Being presented with a host of goalscoring opportunities is one thing but if Fantasy assets are not ruthless enough when seeing the whites of a goalkeeper’s eyes, then all the underlying stats in the world mean nothing.

One only has to look at poor Che Adams’ (£5.6m) KPIs – the Southampton striker had five big chances in the first six Gameweeks, an eye-catching statistic had it not been for the fact that he failed to convert any of them or indeed a single one of his 12 attempts on goal overall.

Is goal conversion rate something we should pay more attention to, then?

It is certainly relevant: eight of the current top ten in the Premier League sit in the top half of the table for goal conversion, underscoring the very obvious point that better quality players convert a higher proportion of their chances, no matter how many or few.

The rest of this article will look at the goal conversion rate of various key FPL assets, to see if their current output is sustainable or likely to regress/improve based on past figures.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 9

Members can view goal conversion rates on the Goal Threat tabs under Players Stats.

Why can’t sterling & Sergio save these up for the weekend!!! 🙁

Have 2 in form players who in fantasy I should be delighted to have now I am unsure if both will even start on Saturday....

    Bald fraud is all out...

Pep Guardiola on Raheem Sterling: "All the credit is for him. He’s a guy whose physicality is incredible. He is strong. ***The day after a game, he could play another game.*** His regeneration is incredible; he can play both sides. He is an extraordinary player."

Posted this last night after man City game but might be more useful for people who haven’t been watching them regularly.

Guardiola at the start of the season stuck with his trusty inverted 433, KDB excelled in each and every game. Walker and Zinchenko would tuck inside and fill the the DM spots with Fernandinho/Rodri dropping back in between the CBs to form a 3223 in the attacking phase with Dilva and KDB pushing really close to the forwards so they could get involved in a variety of ways.

Since the CB injury crisis pep hasn’t been able to comfortably push so many players up the field and prefers to have one drop deeper, this was KDB as an extra number there doubling as someone to cut passing lines and offer a deep playmaking option, which is where he was deadly whipping crosses from deep on the right hand side.

This was all well and good with walker for protection but since the introduction of Cancelo there instead KDB has been pushed back even further by cancelo’s attacking runs. KDB’s single biggest opportunity for goal involvement is to hang deep on the right hand side to try and send the same cross every team has seen him pepper in every week. This made it very easy for palace and Atlanta to mark him out of the game which was annoying to watch.

Now the good bit is that they now have 2 fit CBs returning in Ota and Stones, this should mean Fernandinho can slot back into his role in midfield. This was tested last night just for the last half an hour when the game was won. This gives Kevin the licence to roam around again like he used to before he could be marked out of games.

That’s what I’ve been seeing anyway. Hope pep sees the same thing and makes him the explosive captaincy option we began to know and love this season x

Is Sterling’s upturn in form down to Mendy’s return?
Is Mendy adding width allowing Sterling to be more central hence scoring more goals.

Is the Pool defensive double-up still a viable option after Spurs' performance last night?

I thought before the United game last week, that Pool only had 1 tough fixture which is Man City. But United did well against them too.

Would you hold if you had double Pool defence? I am thinking of VVD out for a hit actually, then get Robbo to partner TAA in my team after the City game

Don't think I would take a hit for it when Auba has a nice home fixture. Saints have been a bit leaky at home so Vardy could do well, but CHO has a tough fixture away to Burnley. For free, maybe, but not for a -4

I'm normally quite decisive about my transfers but I think for the first time this season I'm genuinely flummoxed.

    Current team is:
    Ryan
    TAA, Ota, Montoya
    KDB, Mane, Maddison, Mount
    Wilson, Tammy, Vardy

    Button, Lund, Donk, Lowton
    £3.1m ITB

The cash is burning a hole in my pocket and I'm fearful of not having Sterling or Aguero this week, but to get either of them requires a hit and it seems very risky to take a hit for any player who is a potential bench risk (even if my gut tells me both will start). Also, I only sold Sterling (for Maddison) last week in order to fund Pukki>Vardy. Strategy-wise I'm not quite sure where I'm heading.... still considering the Mane/Salah double up soon if Salah shows signs of his best form in the next 2-3 games. My head says do nothing this week, roll the FT and give myself more flexibility next week and just hope that Sterling and/or Aguero don't go crazy against Villa.

    Any thoughts/advice?

Lundstram would go from 33% owned this season to less than 3% owned next, when he is 5/5.5 Midfielder.

Happens all the time. Look at Doherty.

True except he plays an attacking role
