Captain Poll

The 2019/20 Fantasy Premier League season continues to throw up more interesting captaincy debates for managers.

Gameweek 13 presents us with an intriguing set of fixtures that are arguably tricky to predict.

You can now vote in the latest Captain Poll either below or in the sidebar, while Joe and David have discussed this week’s options on our YouTube channel.

After scoring six goals in the last four matches, Jamie Vardy (£9.6m) is likely to be the people’s favourite as Leicester continue their excellent recent form.

Vardy travels to Brighton in Gameweek 13

However, it must be said that a trip to Brighton may not be quite as plain sailing as many will have hoped.

The Seagulls have admittedly been a little shaky on their travels in 2019/20 but at the Amex Stadium, they have fared much better.

In their last four in front of their own fans, against Burnley, Spurs, Everton and Norwich, Brighton have kept two clean sheets and conceded just three times.

During that sample, only Chelsea, Sheffield United, Newcastle and Leicester themselves have let in fewer goals (all two).

That said, Vardy and his team-mates come to Sussex in arguably much better form than

Furthermore, Graham Potter could still be without centre-back Adam Webster (£4.4m) while club captain Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) will miss Gameweek 13 through suspension.

That could see Brighton line-up with two so-called second string centre-backs in Shane Duffy (£4.9m) and Leon Balogun (£4.4m). Alternatively, Dan Burn (£4.5m) could return to the middle and allow Gaëtan Bong (£4.3m) at left-back.

Liverpool might find a trip to Palace harder than a home meeting with Manchester City

Meanwhile, Liverpool options might prove harder to captain for their trip to Crystal Palace compared to a Gameweek 12 win over Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s defence came to Anfield in fairly poor shape in recent away matches, which is why it was no surprise to see them concede three times.

However, Crystal Palace still have one of the best records at the back during home games this season.

They kept three clean sheets in the first four Selhurst Park matches of the campaign and were close to a fourth in the Gameweek 6 draw with Wolves.

Since then they have made Manchester City and Leicester work very hard for tight 2-0 wins.

It is also worth pointing out that Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is still waiting on his first away league goal of the campaign although Sadio Mané (£12.1m) has five attacking returns on the road this season, only Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.4m) have more.

Sterling was arguably Manchester City’s best player against Liverpool

Those two players are expected to be further down the captain poll results than usual because of the potentially unpredictable nature of a big clash between Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, there is every reason to believe that Guardiola’s men can reward managers who show some patience.

While Chelsea’s defensive prospects at Stamford Bridge have been very strong in recent weeks, they are still struggling to keep things tight on the road.

They come to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening still without a league clean sheet away from home in 2019/20.

The 12 goals they have conceded on their travels is the same number as Norwich, while only Aston Villa (13), Watford (13) and Newcastle (14) have shipped more than that.

Furthermore, Frank Lampard’s last four opponents on the road in Watford, Burnley, Southampton and Wolves all pose considerably less of a threat than Manchester City and still managed to find a way to score past his side.

That’s good news for anyone looking to holding Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m) for Gameweek 13.

The England international was Manchester City’s most dangerous goal threat against Liverpool, although still only has one attacking return in his last four league starts at the Etihad Stadium.

De Bruyne has fared a little better there, with a goal and three attacking returns since Gameweek 6 and perhaps a little added incentive as he faces his former employers.

For anyone who is suffering from IB boredom & has a few minutes to kill - some comparisons that I found were interesting to do in members area on the hornet's nests that are underlying statistics

    Mount vs Pulisic:
    1. Total stats last three GW's
    2. Averages per appearance season to date

    Mane vs. Mane:
    3. GW1-22 last season vs. GW23 last season to GW12 this season (wow)

    Mane vs Salah:
    4. Season to date
    5. GW1-22 last season vs. GW23 last season to GW12 this season

    KDB vs. KDB
    6. GW1-7 vs GW9-12

(Any conclusions & any applications of those conclusions in terms of influencing forward looking decisions always come with the usual health warning mind you!)

Haven't had time yet, but even at that, any interpretation of how (backward-looking, indirect, and underlying) statistics might or might not affect (forward-looking, direct, and "overlying") FPL points is always subjective anyways

And over short forward looking sample sizes (3,4,5 games) it's even more volatile

Lowton > TAA this week for a -4 or do it next week for free? Have exact money so any rises / falls would price me out

    Current team:

    Gazza

    Lowton / Lundstram / Soyuncu

    Sterling (C) / Mane / KDB / Djenepo

    Vardy / Abraham / Jimeneze

    Button / Rico / Dendonker / Tomori

Is it worth it? I'd still have Sterling as City cover, and would give me a United attacking option, and he's oop

SHU are stubborn. Don't see more than a goal which Kdb can match. Two transfers next week could be a better opportunity. Saying that though, I already hold Martial since the last few weeks, so it's not a decision that I am true to myself.

    A. Janmaat and Pope
    B. C. Taylor and Hendersen

Combo A has a better defender and GK for stats. Combo B is the double up Sheffield Utd with Lundstram.

Which combo is better from GW15?

Think Pope is probably a sell from 15 - his returns have been consistently non top 6 sides at home and there aren't many of those fixtures around.

The SU double up looks fine until you hit GW20.

Salah's ankle knock is a bit concerning. It looks like one of those where he can play through it but would be better served off resting. Maybe have him on the bench and try to give him the recovery he needs - Palace and Brighton are favourable fixtures so he could have 3 weeks rest to recover which should be enough.

Earlier in the season some folk here we saying that United players were a trap, and I agreed. Martial seems to popular again. Are people still concerned that utd's assets could be still be a trap, or is all okay? Seems somewhat premature to jump onboard the ole train.

While United are undoubtedly better with Martial playing than not, I always find these sort of stats misleading. They don't take into account the competition, quality of opposition, quality of teammates etc.

The very same stat would have you believing United are better with Romero than DDG.

I wonder whether to what extent the statistics are misleading or not depends largely on what action the stat would potentially 'lead' an individual to take...

For example, the fact that he's quite a cheap midfielder playing OOP in a team that his presence noticably improves is probably justification enough for many to buy a ticket in that particular lottery without even sanity checking many other avenues

The With/Withouts probably just act as a nice reference point that shows its possibly not total madness to consider him for an FPL team... and equally both with the range of attacking options out there, and his terrible fitness issues, he's certainly not the 'E' word either (very few, if any, ever really are)

The Romero stat is also a bit different as it's DDG 300+ games vs Romero ~20 games plus DDG has been dropping absolute howlers with alarming regularity for the guts of 18 months now... and neither of those guys are even close to FPL options at the end of the day whereas Martial is a very hot current topic so its a bit of a moot comparison

The Martial stats do cover utd's last 33 consecutive games though which will have a mix of LC, Europa League, Premier League, and teams from various quality stratifications within those competitions - but overall the competition is probably not as relevant as the quality of opposition - which is definitely an important factor to be aware of in relation to the samples used in any with/without statistical comparisons

Button Soy Janmaat Cantwell (2ft 0.7m itb)

I'd be tempted just to bin Cantwell - possibly for Traore or even Jorg - and save the big move for 14. Mo might be fit but I don't see him tearing it up this week and likewise Son feels the wrong week after IB

Cantwell down to Dendo and keep other FT for next week?

If they are ruled out of the game v Crystal Palace, is this a good use of 2FT (no other alarming moves needed)...

    Robertson Salah >> TAA Mane

    Thanks

I'd be making the TAA move anyway. I'm not a member so I don't know the underlying stats but to me it seems like TAA has more assist, goal and chance creation numbers than Robbo.

Every time TAA gets the ball in the opposition half, it feels like something is about to happen. Less so with Robbo, who is a great pick too.

Yes if you have no other issues. Highly doubt that Klopp will rule either out to be honest which means you’ll have to hold... you could still do one of the moves though, perhaps Salah to Mané given Salah’s ongoing ankle concerns.

If you have nothing else to do then yes, fitter and slight upgrade.

    On wildcard.

    Which one should I have?

    Maddison or Martial?

    Already have Vardy and Soyuncu.

    Hi all
Any suggestions with this team or do I just burn a FT?

    2 FT
    0.0 ITB

    Pope (Button)
    TAA Söyüncü Lundstram (Rico Tomori)
    Salah Mané KDB Mount (Dendoncker)
    Vardy Abraham Jiménez

    Thanks!

Wait for Salah news, although Klopp probably won't give much away.

      Maybe Mount to Tielemans.

    Nice differentials available now.

    Richarlison
    Lacazette
    Rashford
    Jimenez

You are of course right, but personally bit reluctant on first three after having been burned before (more than once in some cases).

Hell to the naw with the first two. Rashford is streaky, but could come good. Jiminez definitely worth it.

Thoughts on who to transfer out for Robertson: Tomori or Soyuncu?

I have a defence of TAA, Tomori, Soyuncu, Lundstrom and Rico. I could transfer out Rico instead but that would leave nothing in the bank potentially for Mount to Pulisic and same goes for Lundstrom (although I don't want to get rid of him).

Both Tomori and Soyuncu have a sale price of 4.7 and I would be happy to change again around GW18 when Liverpool have their blank.

    Appreciate any ideas.

Exactly same boat. I'd do Rico if I could afford it (I cannot), but leaning slightly to losing Tomori of the two. Chelsea tight at home, but Leicester looking solid both home and away in recent weeks.

I’d sell Tomori. You’re going to have benching headaches with TAA and Robo playing every week then deciding between Söyüncü and Lundstram for D3

I don't mind benching headaches, especially at that price for players, I would even bench a mid/forward if that was a better choice! Tomori against City this week is easy to not play him but after that they are fairly equal in team and personal projections.

Whichever way I go, it will be the wrong way!

      I'd keep Tomori just

The only cloud is the possible return of Rudiger but Chelsea defence at home is now looking good and they have 4 of 6 from 14 at home against low ranking oppo.

Having Derby County fans in the family, (I know, as a Forest fan), I'm very aware of how goo Tomori is and how much of a favourite of Lampard he is. I'm not concerned about him being dropped even if/when Rudiger is fit.

However, Chelsea have been good recently at the back (if not the best of all teams) after a slightly shaky start to the season. Which stats win out - season or recent?

Of course, Leicester have been good all season and longer under Rogers...

    Pope,
    TAA, Lundstram, Willems, Soyuncu
    Salah, KDB, Sterling, Mount
    Vardy, Abraham,
    Bench: Button, Rico, saka, Connolly

    1m ITB 1FT

    My options

    A. Soyuncu > Chilwell (feels like a horizontal move but higher ceiling for sure)
B Salah > Mane (worried about salahs injury and most in my ML have Mane, but I actually want to keep him)
    C Roll Transfer

    Any advice appreciated
