One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman, takes a closer look at Wolves’ resurgence in his latest Pro Pundits piece.

When I started writing these fortnightly articles, as part of the Pro Pundits initiative, my aim was to talk about broader topics than simply my own team. I wanted to use this platform to raise discussion, from differentials who are maybe going under the radar to tactical aspects, ideas and strategies.

With this in mind, I’ve used the international break to take a closer look at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who after a slow start in which they picked up just three points from the first five games, have now gone seven without defeat in the league.

Last month, I talked about a lack of creativity throughout the team, but a decision to revert to a 3-4-3 shape in recent weeks has seen them increase their attacking threat.

Here we can see the average positions from their recent win over Aston Villa:

Using this 3-4-3 shape, they are now creating more chances, and shooting more often. In fact, over the last two Gameweeks only Manchester City have attempted more shots.

An important aspect to this system is that it allows two of their best performers this season, Adama Traoré (£5.2m) and Matt Doherty (£6.0m), to start. What we’ve often seen is Traoré staying wider, whilst Doherty has moved inside and into goalscoring positions. Indeed, 45% of Wolves attacks came from that right side versus Aston Villa.

Again, focusing on the last two Gameweeks, Doherty has had more penalty area touches than any other defender, and sits third for shots in the box:

The hope is that Wolves continue with a more proactive approach and take this into their forthcoming run of games against Bournemouth, Sheffield United, West Ham United, and more importantly in an otherwise tricky Gameweek 18, Norwich City.

READ MORE: Further analysis of Wolves’ use of a 3-4-3

The news of Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking literally filtered through as we were about to go on air on this week’s Scoutcast. It’s fair to say that it caught me off-guard. Now I’ve had time to reflect, I wanted to include a few thoughts here.

Firstly, I think it’s felt like the end of the road for Pochettino for a while now – 18 defeats in 2019 tells its own story.

Despite this, it shouldn’t take away from what a fantastic job he has done at Tottenham Hotspur. He’s transformed the club and raised expectations despite restrictions, and that should be applauded.

I think we all know how it’ll end for José Mourinho at Spurs, but it’s going to be interesting.

Moving onto my own team, this is how we currently line up, with two free transfers and £0.3m in the bank.

I’ll likely go into Gameweek 13 without a playing goalkeeper. Rather than repeat myself here, my thoughts on this can be heard on this week’s Scoutcast or on my recent Meet the Manager video.

A double move for Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m) and Sadio Mané (£12.1m) is under consideration, which would involve removing Martín Montoya (£4.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) – but more information is needed re the latter’s ongoing ankle issue before a decision is made.

I’ll also be keeping a close eye on events at the Emirates, with an idea to bring in one of Southampton’s midfielders as a Theo Walcott (£6.2m) replacement ahead of Gameweek 14, to try and capitalise on back-to-back home games with Watford and Norwich City.

In terms of captaincy, I’m currently on Raheem Sterling (£12.0m).

Chelsea have conceded 12 goals in six on the road so far this season and when you realise they’ve played Norwich, Southampton, Watford, Burnley, Wolves and Manchester United, it looks even worse.

Add to that Manchester City’s 19 goals in six home games, and I think Sterling is the standout candidate for me this week.

Thanks for reading… until next time.

Not convinced UCL is the purest measure - just need a couple of lucky draws and lucky breaks to progress far, or have progress ended suddenly if the opposite occurs.

Im a United fan and I think United will heavily regret sacking Jose. The poor quality of the squad has become very very apparent after he left. He worked wonders with crap, only criticism against him is that he brought in some of that crap himself.

Squad was poor before he joined.
        Was pathetic after he left.
        No improvement at all.

Whatever you say about OGS, he has improved the squad he got.
He will give better team to next manager in line. He has ni experience if managing, but he has instilled a good process at United at least of not going after big name players wanting to play for ££.

If this was United 2 years ago, we would have jumped on Bale giving him 500k/week.

Ole is clueless. Literally his only strategy is to punt the ball up to pacy forward players. Cant believe any team even bother playing into his hands, just play a deep defensive line and never send your full backs up to join the attack and we are neutralized.

I agree. He's a average coach. But, I'm looking at overall impact on the Club. Let's face it bro, when Mou was in charge it was like cancerous in last few months.
Ole won't last longer but he's not going to hamper the new manager coming in at least with dead wood in the team. It's a nice core atm. If we can add 2 CM's + one strong striker/RW option, i'd love the team

In hindsight I believe there is a real problem with the attitude of our players. The fact that cretins like Lingard havent been shipped out years ago says it all. Its not apparant right now because Ole is a really positive guy, but hes taking it to extreme levels like refusing to criticize the players even after utterly pathetic displays. If thats needed to keep the players on the manager's side theres a massive culture problem in the dressing room...

                Ohh
That's for sure mate. I hate Pogba for what he did to Mou !!
Lingard is playing because he's a "academy graduate". Not even PL level.

I have a good feeling about the most part of the squad now though.

DDG,Slabhead, Lindelof,AWB,shaw (to some extent), Rashford, james,Tony (to some extent), McTominay these boys want to play for United. They aren't here because of ££ like Kaku,Pogba,Fred.
Once we sell the last lot of the Deadwood in Sanchez (on bloody loan so still earning 200k/week), Pogba (yes), Young,Jones & replace them adequately with young, hungry players, i see us doing well again.

Who do we think Jose will pick full backs?

Aurier seems too much of a maverick. Ben Davies seems like his type of LB

Pulisic, Salah, Robbo more or less confirmed, possibly Mane and Maddison out, Sterling and KDB might be rested after heavy IB involvement.. Team an absolute shambles.

Was linked an article about Pulisic hip injury here earlier. Mane withdrawn at half time for Senegal with no real reports of what happened, Maddison was injured and didnt play? Or did he play the last England game?

KDB and Sterling have history with being rested after IB involvement.

I think Mane was subbed at HT because he almost got sent off and had been booked? I haven’t seen the Pulisic report. I would think Pep would play a full strength team to get back to winning ways after the Liverpool defeat last time out but I guess nobody can call Pep. Maddison has a minor injury apparently so I’d imagine will be fine.

Add to that Vardy might be arrested and taken to prison, Maddison could be AWOL after a possible falling out with Brendan and Abraham was may head butt Mount in an unprecedented training ground fight.

Might do a -40 to rebuild the team...

For Auba owners like myself it is kind of tempting to captain him against Saints at home.

Underlying stats are not good. I know how frustrating Arsenal can be. I had him for the last 4 gws (2,2,8,2)

But since I am 500k atm I think I need some high risk, high reward moves if I want to climb up.

I have Mané and Vardy as well so my reasoning tells me to captain one of them and play safe.

    Anyone having the same dilemma?
