Slight reprieve. That’s how I’d describe my Fantasy Premier League performance in Gameweek 12.

After several poor scores and a big rank drop it was refreshing to finally post a good score.

I went through with my plan to “reset” my team, and brought in Raúl Jiménez (£7.3m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.6m). With a score of 78, minus eight points for the hit, it was a solid overall score of 70 that saw me climb from 993,288 to 655,444.

How I got on in Gameweek 12

Another week, another benching of Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.9m). I’ve given up worrying about benching points. With so many cheap defenders offering great value it’s inevitable, and with the busy Christmas period coming up having options is not a bad thing.

It is worth noting, however, that Harry Maguire (£5.3m) once again blocked the points without earning his own, and after losing £0.1m on him already, it won’t be long until he leaves my team.

Maguire isn’t the front runner for a change this week though. I’ve spoken before about prioritising my transfers, and looking at my squad for Gameweek 13 it’s Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) who is likely to be the first out the door.

My bus team for Gameweek 13

I do have some concerns over Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and the ankle that is troubling him. That said, I am hopeful due to his exclusion from the Egypt squad and the fact that he’s still managed to start each of the last three Premier League matches.

There are media reports out there he may miss out this weekend but it seems much more sensible to wait and see what Jurgen Klopp has to say on Friday.

I’ll have a very close eye on the Crystal Palace game though. With Brighton, Everton, Bournemouth and Watford to come in the following four Gameweeks, I am keen to have a fit and firing Liverpool player for captaincy, and that may well have to be Sadio Mané (£12.1m), even if it does feel like a sideways move.

If Salah is out this week he’ll come in as part of a hit with another transfer that I will explain in just a moment. Like last week, I’ll be looking to not fall behind in future transfers and will take hits where necessary.

To find a replacement for Yarmolenko I’ve looked at the Season Ticker in the Members Area, sorted over the next 5 Gameweeks by attacking potential.

As a Vardy owner, it makes for great viewing to see Leicester top of the pile. It’s difficult to add more Liverpool players in with the prices I’d have to pay, and there’s no way I can trust any of the Arsenal midfielders.

That leaves me with Leicester midfielders, with James Maddison (£7.5m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.7m) the two men I’m currently looking at bringing in. I’ve discounted Ayoze Pérez (£6.1m) and Harvey Barnes (£5.9m) because I want players that are absolutely nailed on ahead of the busy Christmas period and would be worried about a lack of minutes for these two.

Choosing to go for Maddison and Tielemans is a very good example of underlying statistics versus the eye test.

When you watch Leicester play they are great form. They have the ability to control games, are quick to win the ball back, and you can see Maddison and Tielemans looking for the ball in behind to Vardy any time they have it. When you go to the Members Area however they haven’t been performing as well as you might think. Below is the last 4 Gameweeks…

If it wasn’t for the eye test I’d probably be slightly put off by these numbers. Given how well they and Leicester, in general, are playing I’m going to rely on the fact the fixtures may well provide better opportunities to increase their output.

With the price difference being £0.8m I’m actually siding slightly towards Tielemans at this point. He’s shooting inside the box slightly more and is keeping up his creativity without relying on set pieces.

That’s not something to turn your nose up to, however, paying the extra cash for Maddison knowing he has free-kicks and corners to fall back on is nice, but when you’re looking to conserve money wherever possible, the Belgian is probably the man for me.

With nine Gameweeks coming between now and January 1, we are in for a rollercoaster ride.

I look at my team and feel like I spent eight points last week to get closer to the so called ‘template’. Bringing in a Leicester midfielder this week isn’t exactly revolutionary either.

With a 300,000 rank boost last week though, it feels pointless looking to break the template for the sake of it.

My strategy at the moment is to make more medium to long-term moves, with absolutely nailed on players. This will let me focus on making moves with higher priority, and being able to react to anything that FPL might throw at us in the coming weeks.

There’s lots of Gameweeks to manage, there will be lots of twists and turns in a short space of time. I’m looking forward to the ride.

Graham Potter: "Adam Webster has a chance of being fit for the weekend and it's a lot earlier than expected. He's trained today and we'll see how he is tomorrow. We have good options in that area of the field."

Does this deter anyone from captaining Vardy?

Would love a reason to captain Sterling but Vardy feels like the more sensible option.

The international break provides an ideal time to reflect on the start of the Premier League season, and assess which players have impressed.

Earlier this week, Alan Shearer revealed his Premier League Team of the Season so far, which you can see below.

    Henderson
    Alexander-Arnold, Egan, Soyuncu, Robertson
    Fabinho
    De Bruyne, Maddison, Mane
    Abraham, Vardy

    Manager: Chris Wilder

It’s hard to argue with a lot of Shearer’s selections, but what about Leicester City assets like Pereira, Chilwell and Ndidi? Do they deserve to be in ahead of Trent, Robertson and Fabinho?

Do van Dijk or Jorginho deserve a spot in the eleven, or even John Lundstram?!

Who would make your Team of the Season so far, and who would be in the dugout?

I would place Pereira in for Trent. Dont think Trents quite been on his A game.

Chris Wilder is just fantastic too

Lundstram is the find of the season in FPL.
In real life though, he's a midfielder worth about 6.0-6.5m in FPL terms, so I can understand why Shearer leaves him out and selects Maddison instead.

Also, the defensive midfielder is an important position in real life but not in FPL, which means that someone who is a better FPL asset has to miss out.

the thing is, do we argue the names individually or the team?

As it stands, this team would be overrun by any top 4 team. 4132 with flying fullbacks and TWO ball dictators in KDB and Maddy is nonsense.

That's my take on the team. RE names: as you've mentioned, due to focusing on attack minded players, the CDMs/CMs pay the price.

Rightfully as you've named. Ndidi, Lunds and Jorgs are having phenomenal seasons. Ndidi boasts some of the best numbers in Europe, Lunds plays with SO much experience it seems, and Jorgs has been the main key in Lamp's revolution.

Good post, and yeah that's an interesting point, it's very, very front front, but maybe not so different to how Pep sometimes plays, with Gundogan holding, and Bernardo, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling and Aguero further forward, plus attacking full-backs like Cancelo and Mendy.

I do agree though, and would prefer Jorginho in there alongside Fabinho or Ndidi if we're talking about a team to go out and win.

lol no worries I got it...

Not about the formation. rather the profiles of the players.

However way you flip it 433 442 4222 etc....

Even if in different positions, KDB will still overlap Maddy in terms of role, you've lost a role on the field here.

Vardy and Abraham are both THE FURTHEST players on the pitch in the style they play within their teams. That's another overlap. the classical duel out and out striker overlap where non of them is a proper 2nd striker. Thats why many 442s fell over the years.

i just feel there is too much "front foot" like you've said, and too little engine and fight. No engine come to think of it.

Butt yes - dickness aside, individually the players arent a bad shout, would have just preferred to see 2 of Jorgs/Fabs/Ndidi, and one non pool fullback. Prolly not trent.
I also don't think Henderson is the best GK. He's pretty solid but he isn't called out much to bail a shitty defense.

In other words, you've names Gundogan AND Bilva.

Those are 2 players with a hard workrate, and the rest can be front foot.

I only see 1 such profile (Fabinho) in Allan's team....

Great picks from Shearer. Would be tempted to go Foster over Hendo as I'd say it's our defenders who are most to thank for our cleansheet but Hendo has played his part I guess.

Shows he's actually watched us as Egan is the one cb who doesn't get forward/overlap but has been so solid especially at goodison and against arsenal.

Ryan, no errors and adapted very well to new style. Been solid
Enda Stevens above Egan for me, Souyncu made some garvy mistakes, so Chilwell. Not sure i would have both Pool fullbacks over Matip, who´s been better than his partner.
Rest is difficult to argue imo, Sterling, David Silva, Jimenez and some others could be mentioned perhaps

Tielemens is equally good option as Maddison.

Infact since he joined pl (gw26 last season) he has been involved in more goals than Maddison in Premier League

    Tielemens- 6 goals 8 assists

    Maddison- 6 goals 7 assists.

Im leaving this stat here because whenever i see a Tielemens vs Maddison post around 4 out of 5 will say Maddison.

Its not as clear cut as people assume despite Maddison being on set peices.

It matters not but I've done Sterling and Pukki for Maddison and Auba ahead of the next 4 fixtures.

    I'm lining up

    Pope/Button rotation

    Soy / Lundy / Tomori / Rico
