The ascent of Tottenham’s Son Heung-min is among the key issues that Joe, David and Karam tackle ahead of Gameweek 17.

The Spurs midfielder’s broad range of points from goals to assists and bonus has understandably caught their eye ahead of his side’s favourable fixture run.

But who makes way and which other of the north London side’s assets should he be paired up with?

Manchester City’s once-bright stars are being increasingly jettisoned by FPL managers and look to be the obvious fall guys in the clamour for Jose Mourinho’s troops.

However, Liverpool’s high-flying assets could become unlikely players to dump. This episode’s key talking point jumps ahead to Gameweek 18, when Jurgen Klopp’s lads miss a fixture due to Club World Cup commitments. On their return, a hard-to-call clash with Leicester awaits and the Scoutcast crew mull over the unthinkable – saying goodbye to Liverpool’s premium players, albeit temporarily.

The fixtures just passed also come under discussion, in particular, Joe and David’s removal of a bracing player each from their line-ups. But thanks to their replacements also performing well, they have mixed feelings about their moves.

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen’s team is also looked at again after he reached an eye-watering fourth spot in the overall rankings.

Meanwhile, Gameweek 17’s transfer plans and captaincies are revealed. There are festive clean sheets to look over and Karam takes his turn picking a top differential to climb the rankings over the next four Gameweeks.

    A) Shelvey
    B) McGinn

On current form I'd go with Shelvey. He might not keep up his goal scoring shenanigans but at least he gets in position unlike McGinn who has been playing way too deep in recent matches and is hardly involved in attack.

Haven’t listened all the way through yet, but got the bit about Carlsen. Fair play he’s miles ahead and having a stormer, but the gushing over his ‘chess brain’ and double Liverpool attack was a bit much. No mention whatsoever that salah missed out the week before and Mane this one just gone. So he had the most expensive players in the game not playing and benefitted best part of 50pts in two gameweeks from those no shows. Even Carlsen himself acknowledged this was pure luck and nothing at all to do with the his strategy here. You could argue it’s bad management with rotation in the air yet the cards have massively fallen in his favour. Fair play to him I say, looks in a good position to win the whole thing with chip use around him, but I don’t think you should make too much of his chess background.

He also got the massive KDB vice captain haul earlier in the season. The chess brain didn’t foresee the Sterling benching (when the signs were there).

He’s obviously a great fantasy manager, but anyone can do all the planning you want.. but to get that high you need Lady Luck and all the cards to fall your way.

I think this qualifies as a bite :p

Salah and Mane could both have come for a 10 min cameo in the GWs they were his benched captain for. And he would have dropped 200k.

This, luck is a part of the game but I haven't had a VC haul or bench cameo for more than 3 points the whole season (and I've had 115 bench points this season).

            130 Bench points for me

4 lots of double digits in the past 6 weeks has not helped. Have also dropped from top 5k to top 80k in that time 🙁

Willems scoring against City and Dunk v Liverpool are tough to predict! Sometimes you need lady luck!

Yup! thats the thing, I wouldn't have started any of my bench players over any of my starting 11, that being said I haven't gotten lucky enough to get the bench points either. In my ML 2nd place has gotten 31 points off his bench in the last two weeks and had two VC hauls... it is what it is.

      Inclined to agree.

In a way he is unfortunate because from what I have read before he really does take a stats-based approach and is careful/ measured player but the way luck has fallen does make it appear there was no skill whatsoever behind his success.

Just a month?! It would be so amazing wouldn’t it (winning the title that is, possibly not your singing Luciano!!) Definitely not counting any chickens though after letting it slip to a degree a few occasions before. I was 5 last time we won the league, so this would be the first time it counts for me ha

The thing that grinds me more than him or anyone being 'jammy or lucky' is players playing for the top 10,000. It's a game we should all be playing to win, taking chances, and making it interesting.

I know what you mean - your goal has to be to beat everyone else.

We are all here for fun and because we love the sport. I want to win and when you do you fall into a template (a little bit) but when chances can be had or calculated punts, take them!

My ranks over the years have been all over the place. 220k, 110k, 8k, 68k, 32k, 110k, 1.2m, 68k, In the season where I finished within the top 100k there were moments where I could have stayed the course as often times I was in and around the top 10k during that season but I decided to risk it for the biscuit!

Cheers and good luck for the rest of this season!

That would mean his strategy being well thought through, supposedly seeing things which others can’t. Which I don’t buy in this instance. On the chess board absolutely, not to get as high as he has.

        1. Slitherene
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

I personally don't think he means that at all.

What he means is more on the lines of his brain being more active than most average people as playing a game like chess actually stimulates the growth of dendrites, which in turn increases the speed and improves the quality of neural communication throughout your brain. Increased processing power improves the performance of your body’s computer, the brain.

Research also shows that playing chess improves a child’s thinking, problem-solving, reading, and math scores.

Playing chess builds up your self-esteem. When you play, you’re on your own, and if you lose, you have to take stock and analyze just where you went wrong. Playing and analyzing why you lost or won a game increases the level of mental strength and self-confidence that you bring to the world beyond the chessboard.

Mostly copied coz I'm lazy at typingg, but I see his side of the view as well.

Or you win, or you draw.
              Surely no luck involved.

This asserts more emphasis on the point that he probably has a lot of advantages of playing Chess, supported by the fact that he is the number 1 in the world in Chess, without any luck involved.

I don't disagree with you on him being lucky this season though. Even he acknowledged that.

You’re reading far too much into this. And yes, that’s what I said no luck involved with chess. If you don’t use your castle for 20 moves you don’t get an extra Queen off the bench ha

I'm just saying the points you can potentially make up in gw 18 while many managers bench (salah, mane, robbo, taa, etc...). They will have massive amounts of budget on their bench that you could have in your starting 11 because you know you can wc them back in.

So where you going to spend all that cash?
No Pool, Citeh v Leicester, Spurs v Chelsea, argueably there's slim pickings out there with the big guys.
I'm wildcarding same time but the major downside is lack of time between the Gw's and that favours GW19 rather than the fixtures over the 2 gameweeks.

I don't have a wc so I haven't looked into it much. As I said above, if you've held for this long you're looking to use it for the most impact. Setting your team up for a few weeks ahead of the next wc is nice but the pool blank offers a unique opportunity to take some punts that others can't and will leave them with massive cash on the bench or hits. Rich in for Salah or Mane or Kane in against a leeky Chelsea could be another.

No I get that, but the options are not the most inspiring was really my point.
The WC will be most useful afterwards nonetheless.

Disagree. This moves can be successful when comparing the output of say Rich and Kane instead Rico and Cantwell/Den (most on heres bench players who would come in). You can set yourself up for post GW19 in GW19, while taking advantage of the opportunity of a blank game week.

    The Review : GW 16

Greetings everyone, welcome to the latest edition of The Review. With the hectic festive schedule almost upon us, I hope that this summary of important takeaways is helpful for FPL managers in setting their team up for this crucial period:

    1) There’s only one place to begin. Jamie Vardy. The Leicester man has notched 13 times in his previous 10 PL games and remarkably seems to be replicating his 15/16 form. In that particular season, Vardy notched 13 times in 11 PL games between GW 4 and GW 14. Comparing the two incredible runs: While his volume of shots inside the box per min in his current run is worse off than his run in 15/16 (33 mins per SITB now as compared to 23 mins per SITB in 15/16), Brendan Rodgers seems to have transformed his playing style in such a way that the quality of chances that he is now getting is actually significantly better off than in 15/16 (55 mins per big chance now than 73 mins in 15/16).

    2) I have been so awestruck by Vardy’s numbers that I’m allocating yet another one of my key points to the Leicester front man. While in my first point I discussed Vardy 19/20 v Vardy 15/16, here I discuss the Vardy of the past 4 GW’s v the Vardy of the rest of this season. Vardy’s xGi (expected goal involvement) over the past 4 GW’s is such that no forward is yet to better that statistic over 4 completed GW’s this season. Astonishingly, Vardy has accumulated ≈60% shots inside the box and 50% big chances over just the past 4 GW’s than what he managed in the first 12 GW’s combined. The way the Leicester team is feeding Vardy off late is scarily similar to what I’d do having bought a shiny new toy on my FIFA Ultimate Team trying to justify my investment, i.e Make.Him.Score!

    3) Bournemouth’s xG of 0.15 was the best xGc (expected goals conceded) Liverpool have managed to record in a single PL game this season. Liverpool are still ranked best for xGc over the season, but their defensive assets have annoyingly managed to concede once in most games this season in what has been a frustrating period for their owners. They now face a Watford side which has accumulated the fewest big chances on the road this year, so there is a good chance that Liverpool can record back to back clean sheets for the first time this season.

    4) While he is being sold in droves off late, it is important to note that other than Vardy, no forward has managed to accumulate as many shots inside the box over the past 4 GW’s as Raul Jimenez. During this period, Jimenez is also top for big chances created and penalty area touches for forwards. Wolves’ attack is structured in a way which allows everything to go through Jimenez, hence it comes as no surprise that no other forward in the PL has managed to record even half the number of big chances created as Jimenez has over the past 4 GW’s.

    5) 5 corners taken over his last 3 appearances by Leicester’s Ben Chilwell was the first time he has taken set pieces this season. While this might appear to be on paper a minor, inconsequential detail for FPL managers the effect it has on Leicester’s defensive assets is far reaching. What it means is that Chilwell is likely to create more chances and record more baseline BPS, and hence in all likelihood will get more bonus than the other defenders whenever Leicester are to record a clean sheet. This will directly impact Söyüncü the most, who had the best baseline BPS for Leicester defenders before Chilwell was on corners.

    6) Even though the sample size is relatively small, I think it is imperative for FPL managers to analyze the effect that Mourinho has had on Spurs’ FPL assets. Defensively, the numbers show signs of gradual improvement. While the shots inside box conceded have decreased from ≈10 per game to 8 per game now, it is in the big chances conceded category where the progress has been most glaring. No team has conceded fewer big chances since Mourinho has taken over.

    7) Moving on to the attacking assets, statistically Alli and Son have shown the most signs of improvement - as has been reflected in their FPL points. Remarkably, Alli has already accumulated more big chances under Mourinho than he managed to do so in the first 12 GW’s combined. Notably, Alli is also enjoying a higher average position which could be put down to a tactical tweak by Mourinho in which he has decided to deploy Alli in a position closer to the striker contrary to the deep lying position where he was playing under Pochettino.

    8) Which also brings me to the point that Son has created double the amount of big chances than any other midfielder has done over the past 4 GW’s. Further, Son has already created thrice the amount of big chances in 4 games under Mourinho than he did in the first 12 games under Pochettino. Despite his performance vs Burnley, it is interesting to note that Harry Kane’s penalty area touch per min ratio has alarmingly worsened from ≈17 per minute under Pochettino to ≈28 per minute under Mourinho. Further, Kane is now averaging 72 per minute for shots inside the box as compared to ≈47 per minute under Pochettino.

Raw data taken from UnderStat and FFScout. Computations and analysis my own. A big thank you to everyone for taking the time out to read - I await your feedback. Best of luck for GW 17, may your arrows be green!

      Thanks for this.

I do find the Jimenez statistics interesting, though. I'm a faithful owner, but it's odd that despite all of the shots, big chances created, and penalty area touches, he still isn't scoring (or providing assists) at a very impressive clip (6 goals, 4 assists). As such, it's getting harder and harder to keep him around with a fairly rough stretch of fixtures upcoming and other assets that are either cheaper (Ings, Pukki) or possibly within reach (Rashford).

I mean thats a pretty good clip for a 7.5ish forward. Jimmy has been great, fixture tighten up and is the only reason I shipped.

Great write up! I picked up on the Chilwell thing too. Hasn’t he also taken a free kick or two recently? The most significant thing for me is that this reduces Maddison’s chances of assists, although it hasn’t hurt much yet.

Interesting post mate thank you. I agree with Jimenez. He's staying in my team. Him and Jota are a real handful against any opposition.

Excellent read as always. Tells me that a template built around Vardy + Son/Alli + Chilwell/Soy + Mané now is firmly established. So the challenge is to find the differentials to draft through festive season.

Should this say minutes per touch/shot instead of shots/touches per minute? Surely he isn’t taking 72 shots per minute.

I know Klopp has been rotating but with a league game this Sat 14th and no league game until 26th December is it fair to assume both Salah and Mane will start this Saturday. Liverpools main squad could have two further games on 18th and 21st but those can easily be filled with squad players...

I basically want to convince myself that Salah is starting this Saturday. His record and Liverpools record vs Watford is crazy good

Their are 2 club world cup games in between those fixtures and a long return journey.
Anyone can get rotated apart from in defence due to injuries. However I think Robbo is due a rest, so I wouldn't be surprised if that happened this weekend

    2. Pinturicchio10
      6 years, 7 months ago

I think it's fair to assume both start, yeah. Bloody hope so anyway as I have both and it would be nice to actually get them both in the mix vs Watford 😀

surely they both start, they then have a nice break in the sun where they can play their squad players 🙂

Looking ahead to GW18, Dendonk for Martial would give me:

    Henderson (bha)
Lund (bha) Soy (mci) Kelly (new)
Alli (CHE) Son (CHE) Maddy (mci) Martial (wat)
Jim (nor) Abra (tot) Vardy (mci)

    Bench: Trent, Mane, Williams

Not filling me with much confidence to be honest! I have a good enough team this week (I think) to swallow a hit, is it necessary to boost one of those with tough fixtures? Or are there likely to be goals in those anyway. I can see them in the Che vs Spurs game...

What do you think of this team? Can I save my free transfer here?

    1 FT, 1.5 IDB

    Hendo
    TAA, Soy, Lunds
    Mane, Son, Alli, Tielemans
    Vardy(C), Tammy, Jimi

    Button, Hayden, Tomori*, Hanley**

Or do one of these 3 moves:

    a) Jimi to Rash
    b) Tielemans to Grealish
    c) Hanley to Kelly

I think that I could save FT and do these 3 moves for the next gw with -4 (mini wc).

I personally think Jimenez will do well this week. It could be a decent scoring game like their previous 2 meetings. 9 goals in both games. He then has Norwich next so after that you could still consider the moves you're thinking about now.

The top 5 "transfers out" this week:-

    KDB 168k
    Jimenez 145k
    Sterling 144.5k
    Aubameyang 114.5k
    Pulisic 109k

I know Rashford, Son, Alli and Abraham are being brought in and I appreciate you can't have them all.
Seems bonkers because I actually think one of KDB/Sterling will be the highest scorers this week.
I currently own neither but there is every chance I will bring one in.
I also believe Wolves will give Spurs a good game and would expect Jimenez to be in on the action.

Rash in as well, before his price increase.
Did Jimi to Abraham with other free.
Rash just to stay fit on Thurs now.

Then we are on the same page pal where Rash is concerned.
I think Tammy will score well this week. Just don't think Jimmy will be far behind and the Norwich game next swayed it for me to keep

Long gone are the good old days when everyone had a woeful bench of dirt cheap starters. Sheesh. Mount i suppose.

Mate... tell me about it! Iv made 30 transfers this season already. But last 3 GWs iv had 2FT burning a hole in my pocket because of how ‘good’ my team is on paper. Unchartered territory.

Hey guys. Thoughts on this team?

    Pope
    Soyuncu, Lundstram, Aurier
    Mane, Tielemens, Son, KDB
    Abraham, Vardy, Rashford

Have money for Tielemens --> Maddisson next week.
