Burnley 1-0 Newcastle

Goals: Chris Wood (£6.2m)

Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.4m)

Bonus Points: Wood x3, Westwood x2, Erik Pieters x1 (£4.5m)

Burnley got back to much-needed winning ways with a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

While Sean Dyche celebrated the first three-points since Gameweek 13, the crucial development for Fantasy Premier League managers was a return to normal service: clean sheets at Turf Moor.

“We wanted a reaction to the defeat at Tottenham last week, when we weren’t ourselves. The first thing was the performance, but you also want the win and we’ve just about edged that, I feel. We’ve had a one v one and knocked on the door a few times. I was pleased with the performance actually because they are a tough side. Steve (Bruce) has got them organised and they are solid, so to get the win was very pleasing.” – Sean Dyche

“A clean sheet and three points are what you dream of. It was a difficult game in difficult conditions but one we came through. We knew they are a good outfit who’ve had some positive results in recent weeks. But we fancy ourselves at home against anybody.” – Phil Bardsley

Pope kept a much-needed clean sheet against Newcastle on Saturday

The latest home shut-out means that Nick Pope (£4.7m) and his colleagues at the back continue to offer reliable defensive returns against the so-called lesser sides when playing in front of their own fans.

So far this season, six clubs have to Turf Moor who finished outside the top-six in 2018/19. Newcastle’s blank means that Crystal Palace are the only such side to have actually scored in Lancashire; the Magpies, West Ham, Everton, Norwich and Southampton all failing to find the net there.

Whether such a statistic will benefit Pope, James Tarkowski (£5.1m) and Ben Mee (£5.0m) over Christmas and into the New Year remains to be seen though.

Between now and Gameweek 25, the Clarets face Bournemouth, Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United away from home, while Aston Villa, Leicester, Arsenal and Manchester United are the next four to come to Turf Moor.

Burnley have just one clean sheet on the road this season, while last season’s top-six sides have scored a combined 16 goals in four matches at Turf Moor in 2019/20.

Due to a slew of injuries, Bruce had to play Joelinton on the flanks at Burnley

It is also fair to point out that Burnley’s latest clean sheet was helped out by an increasing number of injuries at Newcastle.

The Magpies came to the Lancashire without Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), whose pace has caused problems recent, Miguel Almirón (£5.8m) and Jonjo Shelvey (£5.1m), who has three goals to his name since Gameweek 14.

“Almiron more than Shelvey. Muscle injuries. We’ve just got to be careful. We run the risk, if they’ve got a slight strain or whatever. We can’t have them pulling up and missing six to eight weeks. Let’s see where they are in the week and we’ll go from there.” – Steve Bruce

Without the pace and creativity of those players in midfield, it was hard for Newcastle to create many chances.

Furthermore, with Christian Atsu (£5.4m) the only fit recognised wide-player, Steve Bruce was forced to shift centre-forward Joelinton (£5.6m) onto the right-flank of midfield in his 5-4-1 formation with Andy Carroll (£5.4m) leading the line.

If Newcastle have the same limitations over Christmas, which looks likely given the current status of Saint-Maximin, Almirón and Shelvey, it bodes well for defensive assets of Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Everton and Leicester, who all face Newcastle between now and Gameweek 21.

“Almiron and Shelvey and Saint-Maximin affected it, of course. I never really want to make excuses but of course, that’s why I want a bigger squad. I’ve used the full squad today and they weren’t quite good enough but I thought we didn’t do much wrong.” – Steve Bruce

Bardsley made a quick return from injury for Gameweek 17

By contrast, Burnley were helped by an influx of players returning from injury.

Phil Bardsley (£4.3m) overcame his yellow flag to start at right-back in the place of Matt Lowton (£4.4m).

After three matches out, Ashley Westwood (£5.4m) was back in central midfield alongside Jack Cork (£4.9m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.2m) started next to Chris Wood (£6.2m) up-front in the 4-4-2 system.

“The players coming back did make a difference. I’m not doing the other players down because we have a good and competitive squad this year. We don’t carry big numbers so when you carry a few injuries it does look a bit thin, all of a sudden, but there was a reaction to them coming back and it’s a great three points.” – Sean Dyche

Wood got back on the scoresheet for Burnley, having gone three matches without a goal. However, with those tough fixtures approaching, he may prove less appealing than a number of alternative similarly-priced forwards.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Bardsley; McNeil, Cork, Westwood, Hendrick; Wood (Rodriguez 85′), A Barnes.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Willems (Gayle 71′), Dummett, Fernández, Schär, Manquillo; Joelinton, Hayden, S Longstaff, Atsu (Muto 80′); Carroll.

My team contains Kelly, Grealish, Traore and Danny Ings.
And you know what, I love it.

    FPL is weird.

This is my plan too. Did Mane to Grealish yesterday before Mane drop and Grealish rise. Depends how much you bought Mane for IMO. I sold Mane for 12.1 and can get him back if for 12.2 so only losing 0.1. If he drops again this week then even better!

            Lucky but also clever.

I did a post a while back detailing how he's played and there's a consistent pattern. He triples up on teams with strong fixture runs.

Leicester, Liverpool and Spurs. I wonder if he keeps the trend up and goes triple City soon because they're the next top team with a great run.

This is a great tactic but I feel that Cit might be the exception to the rule.

Leicester and Spurs players are filled with great value, nailed-on assets. Likewise Liverpool, albeit more expensive.

City, on the other hand, are much harder to predict. KDB is a certainty for most, but which 2 do you have around him? Sterling is obvious but very expensive. You're then looking at the likes of David Silva or hedging your bets on 1/2 of Otamendi, Bernado, Mahrez, Jesus, Aguero etc.

It's a great tactic but I think it's worked well so far because of the value provided by Spurs and Leicester players.

when transferring out 3. Unless a long term injury comes up i wont remove if a lot of value is tied up, Vardy and Lundstram are examples. Transferring in it's a mix of 1 and 2, mainly 2.

Happy to ignore 3 - inflated TV already. I just look at the value I’ve gained when I move a player on.

Also if 3 is a bother it can only mean you want him back - so why are you moving him on?

Any consensus reached on the best GK for a WC?

Not really enthralled by any of the options really. Like the look of Guita but slightly too expensive for my taste.

Gaz = good price but will Spurs tighten up?
Hendo = iffy fixtures for a double up
Ryan = Brighton fixtures mixed bag
Ramsdale = Can't trust Bournemouth D every week and have Rico for nice fixtures

    1. Aftermath

I think Guaita is worth the price, sea of easy fixtures, palace a decent defensive outfit, makes some saves, good on bps

Bit worried about their injuries - I watched the game the other day and Brighton honestly could have had a hatful. Also checked out some stats and Palace massively overperforming XGc if you're into that sort of thing.

Kelly at 4.3 seems much better value for coverage to me - and I don't fancy a double up despite fixtures

      Guaita

He started the season as the best value keeper on last seasons form and this seasons price. Add in that fixture run and it seems reasonable to suppose that he’ll come close to matching that pricing - especially if you can ship him in a WC late when Oalace fixtures turn.?

40% cs record against bottom 13.

I have it gained in that my keeper costs 4.5m not 4.6m which allows me an extra 0.1m to use elsewhere in the team (which actually matters to my current proposed side).

              Look, I'm on wildcard.

I bought Gazzaniga at 4.5m. I can swap him if I want for Ramsdale (who I think is likely the best WC keeper), but I've decided to keep him because it saves me 0.1m.

"I'm sticking with Gazz though for my 0.1m in value I've gained."

Makes perfect sense if you think about it as 'value gained from the goalkeeper position' vs picking Ramsdale

Poor word choice by me. But the idea is the same.

I've picked Gazzaniga over Ramsdale because it saves me 0.1m.

You should have said that you are sticking with Gazza because Ramsdale would cost you .1m more and give you .1m less to spend elsewhere rather than saying you are sticking because you have gained .1m on him. Anyway, all understood now 🙂

They do have some nice features - but they're Bournemouth and really can't be trusted. I've had Rico from the off and happy to play him every now and then but doubling up on them isn't something I like the look of.

Leaning towards Gaz or Ryan - as like what I've seen from Brighton and Spurs (albeit mainly from an attacking point of view)

That 'Bournemouth who can't be trusted' have kept 4 clean sheets. Their goalkeeper is the tied highest scoring keeper in the game and has the most save points and 2nd most bonus points.

He's also among the cheaper options. 5.1m for Guaita vs 4.6m Ramsdale.

In honesty, there are very little points swing amongst keepers so maybe going with a 4.6 (Gaz or Ram) is the way to go

Well you only have 19 or 20 depends on team. Get out Liverpool players now and back on wildcard next week, that’s my plan

Now. Unless you have 2 FTs, your team is pretty good and if so, do it next week.

Fuming that I fell asleep and got prices out of Tomori & Hayden -> Aurier & Grealish

    Team: 2FTs and £2.2m itb
    Guaita (Stek)
    Rico, Lund, Soy, Tomori, TAA
    Alli, KDB, Madison, Hayden, Mane
    Vardy, Jimi, Ings

No idea what moves to do now, any suggestions to improve staring 11 this week. Who is the priority to move and should I use 2FTs or more/less???

Do we think minamota will have much impact on liverpool's front 3?
Or more just ease him into the squad this season?
He looks a good player, so could give klopp a viable option to rest any of them.

Will likely WC next week, which means 2FT to have a punt this week - best option here?

        A) Salah (blank) & JWP (avl) -> Sterling (LEI) & Grealish (SOT)
        B) Salah (blank) & JWP (avl) -> KDB (LEI) & Martial (wat)
        C) Salah (blank) & Vardy (mcy) -> Sterling (LEI) & Kane (CHE)
        D) Salah (blank) & Williams (bench) -> Sterling (LEI) & Otamendi (LEI) [bench Soyuncu (mcy)]

Would lose 0.2m if shipping Vardy and bringing him back next week.

        Ryan
        Aurier, Lundstram, Soyuncu*
        Salah*, JWP*, Son, Pulisic
        Vardy*, Abraham, Pukki

        Button, Dendoncker, Williams, TAA
        Bank 0.9m, 2FT, WC available

          Salah + Pulisic > Grealish + Sterling.

          And then WC. Good luck!

Cheers! I think I'd rather Pulisic (tot) than JWP (avl).

If losing Pulisic I could get Martial (wat) or Alli (CHE) instead of Grealish....thoughts?

In grand scheme of things 0.2 is not a lot. Of those Id go C for the potential upside

But left to my own devices I’d get Rich and Grealish for Pulisic and JWP.

          Well done on Pukki!

Cheers, that's not a bad option, although no MCY attack would be a worry - killed me this week!

Another option could be E) Salah & Pulisic -> Sterling & Alli - whatcha think?

Not sure why you would want to get rid of any Leicester assets they could easily do a job on Man City, especially with that defence

They could, but I can see a big MCY performance and a convincing win.

Have the exact cash for Tomori & Pulisic > Targett & Rich. Pull the trigger or calm down and settle for Grealish if needs be?

Chelsea looked off on Saturday but this game against Spurs may actually suit them.

Wouldn't expect a Pulisic haul, but I think he'll start and he's still a big threat for Chelsea.

No. He was a bad punt. 4 weeks with WHU AVL eve BOU and he got 2,2,2,3.

Another short-term punt based on fixtures that has failed for me after Aubameyang.

Been very conservative with hits this season but considering a 8 point hit this week. which looks best ?

        A. Mane, Maddison and Boly > Son, Grealish and Aurier (son captain most likely)
        B. Maddison, Dendoncker and Boly > Grealish. Traore and Aurier (allows me to keep mane)

        Team at the moment

        Ryan
        Lundstram Soyncu Rico
        KDB Alli (C) Maddison Dendoncker
        Vardy Ings Rashford

        button mane taa boly
