Captain Sensible

The captaincy debate for Gameweek 23 of Fantasy Premier League is not proving to be as straight-forward as many would have hoped.

Manchester City blew away the competition last time out but arguably face a sterner test this time.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s defeat to Southampton was certainly a damaging one for Fantasy confidence, but a trip to Burnley provides the perfect opportunity to make amends.

And let’s not forget that Liverpool host a Manchester United side that has made a habit of frustrating their arch-rivals in recent years.

As ever, the Captain Sensible article is here to help Fantasy managers make the right choice for their captaincy.

We will be assessing the key candidates based on their recent performances and compare them against the defensive showings of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up to a Membership package will be able to access it in full.

Captain Poll

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m) tops the Gameweek 23 Captain Poll having accrued 31.9% of the vote.

It comes off the back of his nine-point haul in Manchester City’s 6-1 win at Aston Villa, which saw him outscore Gameweek 22’s most popular skipper Jamie Vardy (£10.0m).

De Bruyne’s latest haul ensured he goes into this weekend averaging 8.8 points per game over the last six matches.

Crystal Palace come to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon without a clean sheet since Gameweek 16 although the last time they conceded more than once on the road was at Chelsea in Gameweek 12.

In a straight swap from the Gameweek 22 poll results, it’s Vardy sitting in second place this time around.

Ahead of a trip to Burnley, the Leicester man has the support of 20% of the voters.

Despite failing to register a shot against Southampton’s revitalised defence last weekend, Vardy does have a much more appealing fixture in Gameweek 23.

The Foxes are set for a trip to Turf Moor, where Burnley have recently lost their defensive edge.

Sean Dyche’s men have played seven matches against last season’s top-six in 2019/20 conceding 23 times in the process, an average 3.3 goals per game.

While Leicester did not fit that description last season, their attack has shown it is capable of competing with the best sides in the Premier League this campaign, so it seems likely that Golden Boot front-runner Vardy will enjoy his trip to Lancashire.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.8m) monster haul at Aston Villa has fired him into outside consideration for the Gameweek 23 captaincy, with 12.3% of the voters lending him their backing for the visit of Crystal Palace.

It must be said that the centre-forward has only started two of the last four Gameweeks and there is another fixture coming up for Pep Guardiola’s men on Tuesday evening…

After assisting in Liverpool’s win at Spurs, Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is considered the most likely to break through Manchester United’s defence on Sunday afternoon.

The Egyptian has two double-figure hauls in his last three outings at Anfield, yielding a 6.3% backing in the captain poll.

By contrast, Mané has the support of just 3.1% of the voters despite proving more reliable at home recently.

The Senegalese international has registered attacking returns in each of his last four at Anfield, while Salah has two blanks in that time.

Raheem Sterling‘s (£11.8m) no-show against Aston Villa appears to have boosted his chances of a start against Crystal Palace, and his captain credentials in the process.

3.6% of the voters have decreed him as the best option for Gameweek 23, although his last league goal at the Etihad Stadium came against Aston Villa in Gameweek 10.

Danny Ings‘ (£6.8m) continuing form keeps on pushing him higher in the captaincy consideration. 3.2% have backed him for Southampton’s Gameweek 23 meeting with Wolves, who appear increasing threadbare and in need of January signings.

Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), Marcus Rashford (£9.2m), Neal Maupay (£5.9m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) are the only other options with more than 1% in the captain poll.

      TC Salah GW24.

FH undecided. I read there may be a week where we get a combo of blanks and doubles which could be an interesting time to use it.

BB - Probably on another DGW.

WC whenever I feel I need to. (Was tempted to this week but resisted).

    Clearly all very hypothetical

Reading the BGW DGW article the only clear DGW is 37. City though could very feasibly end up with 3 DGW games. Trophy hunting must be high on the agenda given the PL is dead in the water so the FA cup might be a priority - after CL of course.

If City get to the semis then they blank in 28 31 and 34. That would give them a potential triple in 37 and one more!!

Could that one more be in 26? If not is 38 also on the cards? I can’t remember what the precedent is for having a match around the Fa cup final - seem to recall it’s happened.

38 is an interesting week if you like Kun! Planning that week anyway for the fun of it for TC

If the PL is dead and 2nd place is sealed? Will they not rest their players for the FA cup or CL?

I'm definitely gonna save my TC for Vardy DGW for this very reason

Yep a DGW with Norwich looks tasty. But not convinced they’ll put Villa away. Gut says Villa will do the cup final relegation double. Plenty of precedent for that one

    2. There are probably another 7 or 8 GWs until the fixture list is agreed for all postponed games. If the title is pretty much over when they sit down and agree the timings, and if top 4 pretty much confirmed, I think City will be okay with the TGW in 37, they will just field completely different teams in the two midweek games.

      1. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

There’s still potentially another match to fit in though even with a TGW.

        A QGW? Foden essential

There was a one-off DGW25 last year, when the Everton-City match was brought froward from GW27. Part of the rationale then must have the lack of spare midweeks if City progressed in the CL. The problem this year is that it will involve messing with the winter break.

    3. Jambot

If city had that many doubles they’d play one in 34 which would end up a single gameweek one in 37 and they’d have to find one more week for then third. Very unlikely there would be a triple in 37 and it’s impossible to have a double in 38 as all games are played at once! only exception to that was a bomb scare.

      1. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 6 months ago

Correct - good point about 38.

Jarvish already pointed out 34 - silly me. I’m still curious about where the other DGW would fall though. A TGW is one possibility. The only other one I can see is 26 - early test case of the winter break perhaps.

There’s been talk of a triple needing to happen every year I’ve played this game and it has never happened. Problem with 26 is they won’t know that they need three rescheduled games by the time 26 is played as the FA cup QF/SF are after. They’ll clash it with a champs league night that city aren’t involved in most likely.

    4. Lord.

If City reach the FA Cup semis they will still have one fixture in GW34: a midweek match against either Arsenal(h) (postponed due to the EFL Cup Final); Chelsea(a) (from GW31); or by slipping the original GW34 fixture (Newcastle(h)) by a few days. They would definitely have double in GW37, but that would still leave another fixture to squeeze in somewhere.

Rescheduling the Arsenal match for GW26 would be problematic as it would undermine the principle of the winter break (ie it would mean City and Arsenal wouldn't get one); however, with both City and Arsenal competing in Europe, they might not have the option of rescheduling for a midweek that clashes with CL/Europa Leagues ties. This suggests that City would have to play Arsenal midweek in GW34, but that still leaves one spare midweek for two fixtures. Maybe a TGW is in prospect this year.

Question is , with CL and FA cup on the horizon and the league likely out of sight, how much can you rely on the faithfuls playing a TGW.

Dont sell Soy before Burnley and Alli isn’t looking as bad as people seem to think he’s been a close VAR call and some poor Kane finished away from a goal and a couple of assists last 2 I’d hold him for Watford and Norwich yet.

Won't be free hitting next GW, so 2FTs would be nice for triple Liverpool 🙂

If Alli does nothing this GW, it would be hard not to sell him to fund the last Pool player - but then again, also very hard to sell him before a Norwich game!

    Front 8 is currently :
    Grealish, KdB, Traore, Mane, Richarlison
    Vardy, Ings, Rashford

    Got 2 FT.

Thinking of rolling one over and just doing Traore to Cantwell this week and benching Grealish or Rashford if he's out injured.

    Yay or nay?

1.0 ITB & 2 FT with team below... Thinking Flappy > McCarthy, bench Hendo, let Lundy come in for Rash & give Alli Watford & Norwich?

    Hendo
    TAA, VVD, Robbo
    KDB, Alli, Maddison, Martial
    Vardy(c), Rashford, Ings
    (Flappy, Lundy, Luiz, Reid)

Flappy > McCarthy also ups the bank balance to 1.5 - allowing Alli > Son if needs be...

Rich is tempting but i think Moyes might possibly try to make things tricky for everton, not sure they'll concede a bucketload

Hmmmm, I unfortunately can't still be going to do something I haven't yet decided 🙂

I do think he's an interesting CAPTAIN shout for GW24 though, but think there'll possibly be better TC opportunities albeit the Lei & City potential DGW's both look to potentially involve tough-ish away fixtures in either 34 or 38

1 FT, 1.1 ITB. Help greatly appreciated!

    Ryan
    TAA, Holgate, Lundstram
    Salah, Mane, KDB, Cantwell
    Vardy, Ings, Rashford*

    (Woodman, Traore, Kelly, Simpson)

    A) Traore -> Sarr (hope Rashford back for BUR)
    B) Rashford -> DCL (Kelly & Traore -> Son & Williams next week)
    C) Vardy & Rashford -> Aguero & DCL (leaving 1.9 ITB to upgrade Traore)
    D) Something else

With Rashford (and Traore) presumably a doubt and Holgate potentially rested I dont want to save FT and risk not fielding 11. Currently on A although quite like the look of B as I will be priced out if I don't make this transfer today/tomorrow.

    Cheers!
