Lucas Moura (£7.1m) has again been placed up-front by Jose Mourinho in the absence of Harry Kane (£10.9m), as Spurs make three changes to the side which lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool.

In comes Erik Lamela (£5.7m) for Danny Rose (£5.3m), after scoring in the midweek FA Cup replay against Middlesbrough. It is the Argentinian’s first league start since the 3-0 defeat at Brighton in Gameweek 8.

Tuesday’s other goal scorer Giovani Lo Celso (£7.3m) is also rewarded with a starting spot, in place of Christian Eriksen (£8.6m). Rumours continue to link Eriksen with an imminent move to Inter but recent weeks have seen him granted more game time by Mourinho.

Youngster Japhet Tanganga (£4.0m) continues to have a presence in defence, with Jan Vertonghen (£5.2m) replacing Davinson Sanchez (£5.3m) in a back four. Fans will be encouraged to see goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (£5.3m) return to training but he isn’t expected to return from his elbow injury for several weeks.

As for Watford, Nigel Pearson has named an unchanged side from the 11 that eased past Bournemouth in a 3-0 win.

A midfield three with Etienne Capoue (£4.8m) and Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m) gives Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.6m) the license to get forward, duly responding with two goals and two assists in the past three matches.

The Hornets have looked much more dangerous in attack over their last five games, with Troy Deeney (£6.2m) scoring four times, Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) notching a couple and big-money signing Ismaïla Sarr (£6.2m) adding three assists to his pair of goals.

Adam Masina (£4.3m) plays at left-back in place of Kiko Femenía (£4.2m), who Pearson says is “making really good progress” from a hamstring injury but was never in contention to make the line-up.

New signing Ignacio Pussetto (£5.0m) is named as a substitute alongside Roberto Pereyra (£5.6m) and Christian Kabasele (£4.3m), whilst Spurs’ new loanee Gedson Fernandes sits on the opposing bench.

Watford XI (4-3-3): Foster; Mariappa, Dawson, Cathcart, Masina; Capoue, Doucoure, Chalobah; Sarr, Deeney, Deulofeu.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Tanganga, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Aurier; Winks, Lo Celso; Lamela, Alli, Son; Lucas Moura.

There must be 1 team in the world other than Spurs stupid enough to buy Serge Aurier. It’s like playing with 10 vs 12 every game. He makes Kieran Trippier look like Cafu. Scratch that, he makes Alan Hutton look like Cafu. I would rather start Vorm at right back. And yes if he scores a hat trick feel free to call me out. Only God knows what KWP has said to José to be treated like this - perhaps an unsavoury mum joke.

Everything mate. My statement is more about his whole time at Spurs rather than this game, but he’s probably done enough this game to justify it too.

    6. Party time
        6 years, 1 month ago

Very Rubbish post. Is he the only defensive calamity at Spurs. Aurier brings alot to Spurs attack that alot can't see, Yes can be poor when defending but in the modern game, wing backs are more in demand than full backs. Aurier is part of the top 3 wing backs for assists in the PL this season.

Aurier this Aurier that. Give me a break

        1. Kulusexy
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 1 month ago

The most errors in the team by a long way have come from aurier - he has been by far the worst player in the team most weeks (except maybe an unfit dier or sadly under form Rose who haven’t really played) and those that watch spurs play every game and not rely on fpl assist points as their analysis would agree. He has messed up so many final passes and crosses he should have had way more assists, it’s likely trippier would have had many more assists and a couple of goals (oh and he can defend too)

Yes the modern right back is meant to attack but at Spurs we have had right backs that can both attack and defend for a number of years.

I hope that Ajax bid 10 million for aurier so you can enjoy him every week, I do feel he will cope better defensively in the eredivisie so if you have any contacts please get to work.

In the meantime enjoy his clean sheet points from today’s game as a sure sign that he is a great defender.

He's been one of the better Spurs players. Lost the ball perhaps a couple of twice, but contributed a lot too.

His passing is not good enough IMO. Yeah he has those nice flicks and tricks, but if he isn't getting goals then he is useless for Spurs.

Personally think Spurs would do well to get rid of Alli. It is not clear how he fits in. He isn't defensively solid enough to play DM. He is not creative enough to play AM.

Once you know you have to stop the long balls over the top from Alderweireld to Alli, you sort of stop Alli's only real goal threat.

Yeah. I like Sissoko if you play him in a Ndidi, Gueye, Gbamin type role. Just win the ball and pass it sideways. Ndombele instead of Lo-Celso would be interesting.

I wonder why people hate Aurier as if he is the only one at Spurs who has been terrible. Spurs don't have DMF atm. What do you expect Aurier to do? Turn himself to a WW II wall?!

He’s been consistently terrible - even when Spurs were playing very well and had a good defence. The one thing I can’t fault him for is indeed his consistency. Have you ever heard a Spurs fan say something along the lines of “Serge Aurier is good at football”

Spurs are sht in general but ofcourse Spurs fans would always look for a scape goat.

When Aurier smashed in a delicious volley against Olympiakos. I bet those dunskies were kissing his arse.

The truth is Spurs are total mess at the moment. They need 2/3 world class defensive midfielders as long as that is missing the defense & attack will continue to suffer.

Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez, Gazanigga etc. have all been poor not just Aurier

Possibly but that is still to early to say as 3-4 gokd run and they will be safe. May well go down to wire between them,Burnley, Brighton

Lot of crap in the PL. Bournemouth, Burnley, Norwich, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Brighton, West Ham etc.

If I were still a betting man I would say Bournemouth. But the odds would be short.
