One of the world’s best FPL managers, Tom Freeman (aka avfc82), discusses Burnley, Brighton, Oliver McBurnie, Gameweek 37+ plans and more in his regular column.

So, where were we?

The last time I checked in, we were just two games into Gameweek 32+ and I sat 44,693rd overall, with a Wildcard and Bench Boost in hand.

I talked Everton, and specifically Lucas Digne (£5.9m), whilst touching upon Manchester City and how Phil Foden (£5.5m) could be a nice differential for the run-in.

Since then, I’ve used both remaining chips to varying success and have seen my overall rank rise to 17,122.

Despite Everton’s struggles, Digne has two assists in four games with some good upcoming fixtures and whilst Foden registered 12 points shortly after the last article dropped, he’s underwhelmed a little since, though his expected goal involvement (xGI) suggests he’s maybe been a bit unfortunate not to return more.

So, all in all, it’s gone pretty well.

We’re only one game into Gameweek 36+, but for context, here’s how I’m shaping up…

Tom Freeman – aka avfc82 – comes onto the team to make most of us feel wildly insecure about our overall rank history. A long-time Fantasy Football Scout user, he has finished inside the top 1,000 a staggering five times since 2009.

Different for the final knock out rounds to win the trophy.

League is no longer priority but important to give David Silva a respectful farewell.

Of course if David Silva starts in the strongest Man City 11 then forget what I'm saying.

Burnley have two nice fixtures coming up and City have a big rest period before gameweek 38, so it should be a full strength team in theory. Therefore, I think I move Vardy on for JRod (or Wood but most likely the former) for 37 and use the funds to get Sterling in for Willian in the final gameweek. Don't fancy them to score many against Wolves.

      Unlikely for one reason.

They don't play two holding mids against weak teams. Remember that setting the team up tactically is the most important thing not rest.

City have played 2 holding mids only against Arsenal and Liverpool.

Defense looks right. Then it's gonna be one of Fernandinho, Gundo, Rodri. 2 of Dilva, KdB, Bilva. And then 3 of Foden, Sterling, Mahrez, Jesus, Bilva (he'll move into the front 3 if KdB + Dilva start).

      So with that said...

      Fernandinho Dilva KdB
      Foden Jesus Sterling

That is my front 6 prediction. Agree with the defense.

Biggest toss-up is Bilva vs KdB for that last slot in midfield. And I reckon KdB starts because they were so much worse against Southampton with him on the bench.

If they're winning, Sterling, KdB and Jesus will get taken off.

"The Premier League and English Football League summer transfer windows will be open for 10 weeks between 27 July and 5 October, subject to Fifa approval.

In addition, the Premier League and EFL say there will be a domestic-only window between 5-16 October."

Could be quite a lot of transfers after the season has already started, makes things more interesting for FPL again.

2 FT's, then playing FH GW38+ - what can I do with the 2 transfers for next GW? Nothing to lose at this point

    Pope (Button)

      Not particularly.

Already have 2 FTs so probably doing Nketiah to Wood or J-Rod and benching Antonio for Man United to have 2 FTs going into 38

      OR

KDB + Antonio to Salah + McNeil (then upgrade McNeil to D.Silva/Foden in 38)

      1. SHOOTER MCGINN
        • 11 Years
        6 years, 19 days ago

Personally prefer the first option for the flexibility + I'm not sure whether one Burnley attacker is better than any other, so not convinced on using 2 transfers in the final 2 weeks to get Dwight McNeil in and out. McNeil at home to Brighton on the final day is a great fixture too (although granted not as good as City vs Norwich).

      Mahrez maybe.

If i was Pep I'd let top picks KdB and Sterling put their feet up at home.

Jesus and Mahrez on the bench and plenty of Man City squad players to compete home to Bournemouth and also away at Watford.

Team A is my team set up pre transfers and Team B ML rival as likely set up pre transfer. I am 40 points behind and he got in Sterling for Salah to cover me off after I got haul last week. He captained Pulisic and I went Sterling so may yet make up ground tonight but I need differential good captainsfor 37/38 so considering Sterling to Salah, Vardy to Aubameyang and Giroud to Woods/Rodriguez (cannot stretch to Ings and think that will be his transfer in) for a hit but need I think to do that to have chance.

Sound like good moves or what would you do to catch Team B?
    * in Team B are players he has that I don't

    Team A
    Pope
    TAA Maguire Doherty
    Sterling Martial Fenandes KDB
    Nketiah Vardy

    Martinez Aurier Fernandez Giroud

    Team B
    Pope
    TAA Saiss* Dunk*
    Martial KDB Pulisic* Sterling Son*
    Jesus* Greenwood*

    Button* Aurier Giroud Kiko Femenia*

        THIS!

I expect Foden to starts away because he starts every 1 of 2 matches since Liverpool (home)

Coincidentally the fixtures after that was Home Away Home Away etc.

        What are your thoughts?

Is there any value at all in keeping Chelsea players for 37/38?

As a Willian capper it was gutting seeing him make SEVEN key passes and not get any attacking returns. If he and his teammates laboured so much with their end product against Norwich, are any of them going to get any change out of Liverpool and Wolves?

On the other hand, Liverpool can't seem to keep clean sheets. I'm definitely leaning toward playing Pulisic against them. If I thought Chelsea wouldn't score, I could play double Liverpool defence instead.

They may indeed benefit from a more open game and a higher D-line. I for one am still going to field TAA against Chelsea, the other position being a choice between Willian or VvD. Or selling Willian.

            6 years, 19 days ago

You certainly could sell Willian. I have to use my FT to do Giroud to Ings/JRod, so it would take a hit for me to drop Pulisic as well. Playing him against Liverpool was part of the plan and I'm not thinking that the Norwich result changes that. I'll hope for both TAA and Pulisic attacking returns and not expect CS, then FH in 38 and drop all Chelsea.

i'm looking to ship Willian, got good returns since the restart. Will probably only keep if we get wind of Klopp rotating now that 100 points is out of reach. I think the FA cup result will have a bearing too

I'd be interested in analysis of players who have a history of finishing the season well, such as Kane and Aubameyang, and thoughts on whether they'd be worth a last day punt.

As a FPL veteran my aim at the start of each season is to beat my highest finish or at the very least try and get a top 10k finish. Should I (we as a community) lower these expectations due to the sheer volume of people playing the game now and the abundance of information available here and elsewhere. Is a top 50k finish now a more realistic ambition?

Thoughts on a Burnley striker for the last 2 GWs. Wood maybe, Norwich do not deal well with crosses and headers. Or even JRod, found himself in a bit of form.

Liverpool have a week's rest after 2 poor showings. Do we expect them to be resurgent over the last 5 days of a historic season?

On the same note, is going from Pulisic/Willian (or a City mid) to Salah a wise move bearing in mind FA Cup extertions/rotations?

And on a similar note, is it worth shipping out releasing the underperforming Liverpool defenders (TAA, VVD, etc.) and who would you replace them with for the last 2 GWs?

How do we even guess what city assets are going to start when the fa Cup semi is after deadline? Do we just take the risk and get in whoever has the highest ceiling? (sterling probably?) Or do we go for who we think is the most nailed (kdb?)

What to do with Liverpool assets... Are their bad recent results a true reflection of their form? Or have they been unlucky not to score more?

      Has chasing differentials worked?
I am a firm believer a differential is one for a reason. They are not popular, usually because they don't get many points.
Not only does the differential have to pay off but the player being taken out has to fail. Otherwise no ground has been made.
So when I hear "do I get so and so" he should be saying who is he replacing.

      1. Rover
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 18 days ago

Agreed. A differential is only a success if he outscores the corresponding template player. For examples, Sterling over KdB, D.Silva over Mahrez, Robbo over Trent, Greenwood over Rashford, Son over a Pool mid, have all been successful differentials over the last few GWs.

Not confused I don't think, unless I didn't explain properly.

thanks - thought it related to deciding what to do for 37

          It was kind of GW37 + 38.

Transfers this week might dictate when I bring Man City players in basically (in 38).,

Otherwise I just keep the 3 I have.

Aubameyang could be decent - you'd imagine he's playing all 3. At least after Weds/Thurs we'll know how the golden boot is looking for last 2 games
