A fantastic Gameweek 38+ for Aleksandar Antonov was enough for the Bulgarian to leap from third to first in the overall Fantasy Premier League standings and clinch the 2019/20 crown.

Aleksandar scored a whopping 93 points without the aid of a chip, with his successful captaincy of Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) proving key.

Double-digit hauls for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) also boosted his score, with almost 70% of his Gameweek 38+ total coming from those three aforementioned players.

The two managers who had been immediately above our new champion, Joshua Bull and erstwhile leader Chris McGowan, both used chips in Gameweek 38+ but were edged out on the final day.

Joshua used his second Wildcard and racked up 68 points, overtaking Chris but finishing 18 points short of Aleksandar.

Our runner-up captained Harry Kane (£11.0m) on the concluding afternoon of football but even if he had handed the armband to De Bruyne, would still have finished in second spot.

Above: Aleksandar’s winning team

Chris used his Triple Captain chip on Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), meanwhile, with the Egyptian only registering a ‘one-pointer’ after coming off the bench in the second half on Tyneside.

Again, though, handing the armband to his vice-captain, Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), wouldn’t have stopped Aleksandar from winning.

Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen had a Gameweek 38+ to forget after a memorable season, captaining Salah after taking a hit to bring the Liverpool winger in.

Magnus’s Gameweek score of 40 saw him drop from fourth to 11th in the overall standings.

Fantasy Football Scout Leagues

Aleksandar and Chris finished as first and second in our Fantasy Football Scout league, with Bill Wilkins claiming the bronze medal after a successful Free Hit on the final day.

Our Members League was won by Nathan Woollaston, who finished three points clear of regular contributor Lateriser.

Tom Russell claimed the third podium spot in that league.

Ismail Hossan Rasel was the victor in our post-restart mini-league, with TopMarx coming out on top amongst the Mods and Cons.

Congratulations to all of the above managers on their hugely successful seasons.

We’ll have more reaction to come on these success stories in the next few days and weeks.

My best ever finish was 156K 2 years ago. I was 39K this morning, had an awful GW38+ of 48, finished 68K. Is top 10K the respected echelon or is top 100K decent enough?

Play your own game, you beat your best ever finish and I think that's something to feel happy about. Well done and hopefully you improve again next season!

This and the previous season have been weird
      Top 100k is decent imo
      Top 25k is really good
Top 10k is amazing and so on.. Hope it makes sense

PBs are worthy of respect, wherever you finish.

The popularity of the game has increased massively over the past decade so top 100K is decent, top 50K good, top 10K very good, and so forth

It's about learning and improving every season in my opinion.

Once you have learned what gets you in the top 100k, learn what to do to get to 50k, then top 10k.

Draw out what you did well this season and what you can do better...keep learning

100k out of 7m+ teams is a great effort and seeing as it’s your best ever finish you should be extremely proud / happy.

68k is a great rank any season.

Seasoned players who take it ‘seriously’ will typically say top 10k is a great season, top 100k is a reasonable / good one.

But for those who don’t spend all day on this website, top 100k is amazing!!

Interesting question and I guess it’s all relative.

If you’re a serious player, I would class 100k as a poor season. You’re not likely to win any mini leagues with that sort of rank.

I would say that top 25k is a realistic aim for a decent player and a top 10k is definitely a very good rank.

For me, my target is always 1k (I know people say the target is to win, but I mean realistically). I’ve never made the top 1k though in 10 seasons and it gets harder each year.

top 100K is good enough to win a lot of mini leagues.

With so many players nowadays and so much info available to finish top 10k no matter how good at the game you are requires some luck.

Even top 100k is far from guaranteed anymore if you know what you are doing if Lady Luck isn’t on your side

Taking a -8 hit to bring in D Silva and Sterling for Bruno and KDB worked out well. I had a 52 point lead over someone I was desperate to beat and won by 7!

I came close to doing that. It was between that and just swapping Salah to Sterling so I could do Lascelles to Pieters for (-4). I wound up doing the latter but it was a pure coin toss.

One thing I've learnt playing this game (other than don't captain the early Saturday game, or defenders), is that sometimes doing nothing is the correct call.

Dating that KDB didn't have massive form going into this, and Fernandes likes tired

That was exactly my thinking. I've had some shockers this year. Took Lundstram before his 21 against Burnley, benched TAA at Leicester and took KDB out just before Arsenal away. Thank God it's over.

They'll be the top scoring players in their positions most likely.

TAA is now scoring freekicks and well, KDB is their new penalty taker.

What makes you say they'll be traps?

KDB will be 12, Sterling 11ish, Mahrez and Jesus 9ish, an aging Aguero probably 10+ and not first choice. Sterling was a better pick than KDB until last season, and at 12m, there will be jerky knees for KDB owners because Man City attackers take turns in hauling every week (look at KDB before this week). People will flock to his cheaper alternatives.

TAA is absolutely elite, but we'll all look at him like a cash cow at 8m and expect too much from him every week which he won't give. Going without him will do wonders for the rest of your squad.

Ah, so you're coming from a price vs expectations point of view. I thought you meant they'll decline in points. It would take a brave man to go without both.

Both will score over 200 points. As always it's about what else you can do with the money. Robbo has started to steal corners which will will ensure they score similarly.

How much over budget do you think this team would be at the start of next season?

    Martinez, 4.0 fodder
    TAA, Robertson, Alonso, Doherty, Aurier
De Bruyne, Mahrez, Son, Fernandes, Martial
    Jesus, Greenwood, Nketiah

That was my team prior to my fateful KDB to Silva trade...

Really liked it, but I imagine almost all of those players getting price hikes... It was fun while it lasted!

      5.5
      8.5, 7.5, 5.5, 6.5, 5.5
      12, 10, 9.5, 11, 9 but striker for martial
      10, 7.5, 6.5

I think that's a pretty good stab at it. Alonso might be a bit more if he sticks around, just based on his ppg. The rest look pretty likely, but Greenwood would probably be a steal at 7.5, depending on competition.

      11, 9, 9.5, 9, 10(fwd)
      10, 7.5, 6

Is my guess, so 13.5 over budget. But you wouldnt need all those playing subs

The spread seems different this year, the top 500 seem to have really pulled away.

Last year 2,317 gave me an OR of 43,427 and fourth in mini league.

This year 2,386 points gave me an OR of 4,161 and won the mini league.

Appreciate there's one decent GW haul's worth of points between the two scores but wouldn't expect such a gap.

Best ever two finishes have coincided with me playing the game (too) seriously, reading sites like this. I have strenuously avoided hits this year as it was my downfall last. One of the stat analysers suggests that transfers in my team only yielded an immediate return of 57 points.

I avoided the bandwagons like Haller and Mount (annoyed at him today), kept faith with Vardy from the start and didn't wildcard until the final opportunity in the first half of the season. Only times I really got burned was with Pukki, Pulisic and when I persevered with DCL.

Tempted to do a ghost team for next season just to avoid the break in service (looks like I've been 'playing' since 07/08) but seriously need to take a step back from it all.

I'm a lot like you (not as high this year unfortunately but still won ML)

I found that less reading (even of this site), more casual popcasts (2 or 3 max though), and mostly ignoring FPL till Friday has helped me balance the love of FPL and the stress it can cause.

The highs of a good week are fine, but we all remember the bad, bad weeks.

Only 6 out of my 38 Captains had double figure hauls (20+ Captain Points). Lol need to fix this

      Same here.

19 GWs where my captain (after having points doubled or tripled with TC) scored less than 10 points.

Bench of 4 x 4.0 to start the season off with and maximise starting 11.

TV grows with some budgets in your 11 then upgrade bench, one player at a time.

This is how I want to approach next season. Obviously will take time to upgrade bench but wheeling and dealing with 'in form' budgets is the way to go IMO.

good luck sticking to that by the time the season starts and the bandwagons are riding high on here 😀

tbf, thats always been my strategy and has served me reasonably well in the past

I will keep the spine of my team and swap in and out on the highest scoring budget player that GW. So the cheap bandwagon players. Bandwagons get you the 0.1's you require for upgrades...

Hope they bring the deadline back an hour for next season to avoid the leaked team news advantage. Helped me more than hindered me (thanks Rockstar) but I don’t think it should be a factor in an ideal world.

Jimenez was 7.5m at the start of this season when last season he amassed 181pts. Ings has 198pts this season.

Callum Wilson started off at 8.0 this season, so I would think Ings will be too.

With PL stacked with goal scoring mids, 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 may be the formation of choice next season.
