The Premier League today revealed the scheduled Matchweek dates for the 2020/21 season.

The new campaign will start on the weekend of Saturday 12 September, finishing on Sunday 23 May.

The fixtures themselves aren’t yet out but, in their statement today, the Premier League said that they will be released no later than Friday 21 August.

Fantasy Premier League is yet to relaunch, of course, but most of the ‘Matchweeks’ in the below list will likely correspond with FPL Gameweeks:

Matchweek 18 Conundrum

Premier League clubs set to address plans for the remainder of 2019/20

Probably the thing that immediately leaps out from the above list is Matchweek 18.

This has been split in two and bisected by Matchweek 19, which throws up questions over how Fantasy Premier League will handle it.

We had a winter break last season, with the matches spread out and Gameweek 26 taking place over 11 days.

This year’s set-up looks more complicated, however.

Presuming that Matchweek 18 is split down the middle, it may be that the only workaround is a five-match Blank Gameweek 18 and a 15-match Double Gameweek 19 – but then there is the prospect of other outstanding fixtures being squeezed in around this time, just to complicate matters.

Christmas Schedule

Merry Christmas from Fantasy Football Scout

Last year we had four FPL Gameweek deadlines in the space of 12 days (December 21 to January 1) over the festive period; this year it looks like being four in 15 (December 19 to January 2).

That should hopefully ease the strain on Premier League clubs and reduce the risk of rotation, but a 48-hour turnaround between Matchweeks 15 and 16 will surely wreak a bit of havoc.

FA Cup and Carabao Cup dates

The planned dates for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup were also revealed on Thursday.

There won’t be any replays in the FA Cup this season, while the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup will be one-off games rather than the two-legged affairs we usually see.

FA CUP
  • Third round: Saturday 9 January
  • Fourth round: Saturday 23 January
  • Fifth round: Wednesday 10 February
  • Quarter-finals: Saturday 20 March
  • Semi-finals: Saturday 17 April
  • Final: Saturday 15 May

Round four, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final clash with Matchweeks 20, 29, 32 and 37 in the Premier League.

Matchweek 29 (which may correspond to Gameweek 29, depending on FPL’s approach) looks set to be a blank in FPL, as an international break immediately follows.

There are currently free midweeks after Matchweeks 20, 32 and 37, however.

CARABAO CUP
  • Second round: Tuesday/Wednesday 15/16 September
  • Third round: Tuesday/Wednesday 22/23 September
  • Fourth round: Tuesday/Wednesday 29/30 September
  • Quarter-finals: Tuesday/Wednesday 22/23 December
  • Semi-finals: Tuesday/Wednesday 5/6 January
  • Final: Sunday 28 February

Premier League clubs aren’t involved in the first round of the Carabao Cup but will be from round two onwards (round three if the teams are involved in European competition).

Rounds two to four of the Carabao Cup take place in quick succession, in between Matchweeks 1-4 of the Premier League.

The final will clash with Matchday 26 but there is currently a free midweek after it, so there are no guarantees of FPL blanks.

UEFA Champions League and Europa League Dates

The schedules for next season’s Champions League and Europa League games had previously been announced and are as follows:

Champions League
  • Group stage, Matchday 1: Tuesday/Wednesday 20/21 October
  • Group stage, Matchday 2: Tuesday/Wednesday 27/28 October
  • Group stage, Matchday 3: Tuesday/Wednesday 3/4 November
  • Group stage, Matchday 4: Tuesday/Wednesday 24/25 November
  • Group stage, Matchday 5: Tuesday/Wednesday 1/2 December
  • Group stage, Matchday 6: Tuesday/Wednesday 8/9 December
  • Round of 16, first leg: Tuesday/Wednesday 16/17/23/25 February
  • Round of 16, second leg: Tuesday/Wednesday 9/10/16/17 March
  • Quarter-finals, first leg: Tuesday/Wednesday 6/7 April
  • Quarter-finals, second leg: Tuesday/Wednesday 13/14 April
  • Semi-finals, first leg: Tuesday/Wednesday 27/28 April
  • Semi-finals, second leg: Tuesday/Wednesday 4/5 May
  • Final: Saturday 29 May

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea will all enter the competition at the group stage.

Europa League
  • Group stage, Matchday 1: Thursday 22 October
  • Group stage, Matchday 2: Thursday 29 October
  • Group stage, Matchday 3: Thursday 5 November
  • Group stage, Matchday 4: Thursday 26 November
  • Group stage, Matchday 5: Thursday 3 December
  • Group stage, Matchday 6: Thursday 10 December
  • Round of 32, first leg: Thursday 18 February
  • Round of 32, second leg: Thursday 25 February
  • Round of 16, first leg: Thursday 11 March
  • Round of 16, second leg: Thursday 18 March
  • Quarter-finals, first leg: Thursday 8 April
  • Quarter-finals, second leg: Thursday 15 April
  • Semi-finals, first leg: Thursday 29 April
  • Semi-finals, second leg: Thursday 6 May
  • Final: Wednesday 26 May

While Leicester City and Arsenal will both enter the competition at the group stage, Tottenham Hotspur face three one-off matches before they even get there.

The second qualifying round, third qualifying round and play-off round will take place on Thursday 17 September, Thursday 24 September and Thursday 1 October respectively.

That sets the Lilywhites on a collision course with the Carabao Cup schedule and they could be in a similar situation to Liverpool last season.

International Breaks

There are four international breaks in 2020/21 although one actually predates the start of the Premier League season:

  • September (covers weekend of 5/6) – before Matchweek 1
  • October (covers weekend of 10/11) – in between Matchweeks 4 and 5
  • November (covers weekend of 14/15) – in between Matchweeks 8 and 9
  • March (covers weekend of 27/28) – in between Matchweeks 29 and 30

Manchester clubs to Miss Start of Season?

There is reportedly an agreement in principle for clubs involved in the latter stages of 2019/20 European competition to be handed a delayed start to next season.

Should the two Manchester clubs reach the finals of the Champions League and Europa League, they may miss the opening two Gameweeks of 2020/21.

A blank in Gameweek 1 appears close to being assured, with City having reached the last eight of the Champions League and United through to the last four of the Europa League.

Hi! They are set to automatically roll on but, once you have signed up, you can hit cancel straight away and that will end your membership after 12 months.

No, you'll still get your full 12 months if you have signed up and paid. It just means it won't renew in August 2021.

Caraboa Cup in weeks 2-4 excludes early DGW?

      Looks like it

If the DGW doesn't happen early then the messy week 18-20 scenario gets just that little bit messier with DGW fixtures lumped in there. Definitely could be early chip season - or later than expected if you were wanting to use first WC early!

Nope, I posted yesterday about some likely prices given in FPL articles based on what they said/implied.

Not confirmed but these are probably spot on, or 0.5 at maximum:
      Mitrovic - 7Mil
      Soucek - 6Mil
      Bamford - 6Mil

      That’s all

Bamford should be 4.5 and even then I wouldnt have him.

They were a bit vague on him, tbh. Could be less than 6Mil, they said less than 6.5mil but sounded undecided.
Idk if it means anything but they said he could possibly make his way into “early season squads”. Maybe I’m reading too much into that but it that possibly a subtle way of saying Leeds have nice early fixtures?

        1) He's top 3/5 CMs itw and fits Liverpool like a glove.
        2) Upgrade on any midfielder we have.
        3) Wijnaldum hasn't extended.
        4) Adds a different dimension to a very static MF which teams are finding ways to navigate past.
        5) Stops the issue of TAA and Robbo being marked out of a game and have zero creativity (unless Keita plays).

        No brainer.

Coutinho rarely played in the mid three, he was usually on the left, so efectivelly, Mane was Coutinho replacement, the way I see it, and Coutinho money was spent elsewhere.

I never said pool never spend money well.
              They did of course.

But midfield creativity is still missing. I hope though Thiago doesn't sign 😆

I wasn't refering on that anyway, no need to defend yourself there 🙂 It's just, my point of view is that Liverpool didn't go for like for like Coutinho replacement at all costs (was Fekir the case?). I agree with Berbs on the issues why it would be good to bring him in, and I think it doesn't have much to do with Coutinho, that's long in the past now if you ask me.

                I hope he does! 😀

Carabao Cup in 2-4 would seem to indicate dgws wont be instant. I’m wondering if the half weeks in 18 might not be filled up.

Also from a league point of view. City and united keeping two games in hand well into the late season isn’t helpful.

How realistic / good is a team like this...

    4.5/4.0
    TRent (8.0). Doherty (6.0). 4.5. 4.5. 4.0
    Kdb (12). Mane (11.5). Grealish (7). 4.5. 4.5
Wow only leaves 15 for three forwards

    Fail and scary !

If you look at these names I wonder how heavy people will go in midfield week 1.

Sterling KdB Rashford Bruno - probable blanks
    Son - Europa
    Pulisic - injured

How many midfield premiums are left beyond Mo Mane which excludes double defence? Auba just possibly?

Mo Mane can act as a placeholder for someone but that leaves you bringing in just one of the missing names unless you lose both Liverpool mids.

    1. Greek Freak
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 12 days ago

I'd have no problem with both Liverpool mids if all others are blanking. It's not like Salah and Mane don't have the FPL pedigree of KDB and Sterling, so I'd be more than happy having them anyway if other fires pop up and I can't get one of the City guys immediately.

      1. Greek Freak
        • 10 Years

If I wanted double Liverpool defence (which I might), again I'd have no problem having Auba (regardless of how he's classified), Werner, and either Salah or Mane as my three premium attackers.

        1. Moderately content penguin
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 12 days ago

          Interested by Auba over Vardy

Vardy on ppm (million not match) outdid all premiums bar KdB - he’d need to be 11.5 to be poor value this season and even then he’d be close value to the premium mids.

Auba as a mid would certainly make things more convenient from a placeholder point of view

      2. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years
        6 years, 12 days ago

        Yep

Bit of a problem though for anyone going big at the back thinking it through. Just double Liverpool defence could leave you very short of likely placeholders

I’m looking at Vardy as key. He matched all the premium mids - bar KdB - for value and for him Europa won’t start until GW6 or so

all depends on prices, but i quite like salah and mane and swap one to kdb/sterling/bruno, but also like double pool defence so will probably just have Salah, and maybe see what other options look worth a punt for first week or two, fixtures will also affect my thinking

    5. Klaren
      • 8 Years

Salah, Mane, Ziyech, Auba if reclassed

        • 8 Years

If it’s just a midweek Europa fixture, I think Son would still be a great option based on fixtures. In the earlier rounds, priority should be surely on PL.

Not blanking but Europa will kick in at Spurs between 1 and 2 I think. Obviously selectable but choices you may normally choose to avoid

    6. Moderately content penguin
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 12 days ago

In any event whichever way you slice it there may be little variation in premiums come week 1 - depending slightly on the risk of Europa at Spurs

      Mo
      Mane
      Auba
      Vardy

      Kane - Europa
      Son - Europa

      Werner - newbie

Decent chance one or more of these will blank too unless they fiddle fixtures

4 premium attackers 2 in midfield or 3/3 split depending on classification

I meant 4th bite at the cherry for Atletico and 1st bite for City.

My prediction is anything can happen at this point, but most likely is Bayern take it out. I'm hoping it's City though.

Was definitely heart over head with atletico, not that I particularly love them just prefer them over a city or Bayern or psg!

They haven’t actually been good this season but managed to get through Liverpool. Also Simeone is a tactical genius, so you never know. But I reckon Bayern will just walk into it comfortably.

Agree, I think Bayern look strongest. Though I think Atleti would stand a good chance of edging out PSG.

I’d like to see Bayern/City/Barca win for different reasons.

Las Palmas was originally mooted as year or so back when he first announced it, that seemed to fall by the wayside though. Still good enough to grace any side so should be playing in a top league. I'm just glad he isn't going to Qatar.

David Silva is stalling on signing a three-year deal with Lazio.

Talks between the player's entourage and the club has ground to a halt, with the Manchester City maestro considering his options before putting pen to paper.

The thought of all the blanks and doubles is making my brain melt more than this heat!

Fixtures release day has arguably never been so important, with likely blanks from the off for City and United etc.

Having said that, looking forward to when the game launches. Summer tinkering with hopes all still intact is probably my favourite bit of the season!

Another thing is if it does go to extra time and they concede, there's no clean sheet. So I'm not sure if I want to captain a defender for potentially 120 minutes of having to keep a clean sheet.

      Defo imo

We're yet to find out about the messy looking 18-20 but it could be that we're in for two distinct chip seasons - one at the end of the first half of the season as well as the late doubles should they happen, Could be playing the first WC really late might be a smart play.

Can easily have a good team without City and United, nothing wrong with bringing a few players in gradually.

"you can easily have a good team without City and United"

Yes. But not for long. Their EO would be sky high once they get fixtures. If dgw are not on early we can get them gradually yes.

But if let's say DGW 3 is there, I'm not going to hold WC & take a -8 to get them IN.

If there's an immediate DGW it would be tempting to wildcard for sure. If not, happy to bring in gradually - Auba, Salah, Mane, Kane and the Chelsea attackers are no slouches.

Generally agree with this. However, one thing that could be unusual is that the prices of players who start with blanks would rise very rapidly once they return to action. If you wait a couple of extra weeks for a player, you might have to pay 0.6 more than your rivals did.

Not sure DGW3 is possible given Carabao Cup in midweek.

Also in practice I think it may prove quite tricky to simply slot United City in. Some players may be easy ins and outs but there will be some awkward price points too - thinking the United assets here may not easily match GW1 assets in price.

Prestigious Carbao Cup can complicate things yeah.

You're last concern about pricey points can be negligible if we have 2 FT & ready to take a hit or two. (I'm always as you know 😉 )

I'm on a clear progression, Complete this for me

                  38 hits
                  19 hits
                  xxx hits

Have no idea how I ended up top 100k in 2018/19 - it really was quite a bit over 30 hits.

I wanted to take 0 hits last season and was able to make it work (was a nice challenge), but starting to think I would have benefited by being a bit more aggressive with my transfers, so I am going to be more open to the idea of taking a hit a few times next season if I think it could really be worth it.

KDB would be an absolute priority and of course we have transfers to facilitate that. You could use a Mane or an Aubameyang as a viable placeholder.

I'm not sure on United assets at the moment. My personal opinion is that Bruno's level of PPM is not sustainable and that he's actually not as good as his price will be, but I suppose it doesn't matter how your points come.

Martial vs Greenwood depending on Sancho saga is one to monitor.

So I tend to agree with you.

You need Auba as a mid to make that work if that's the swap. If he isn't then you may be looking at double Liverpool mids if you want Salah going forward. Not a problem in itself of course but it leaves you with just 2 Liverpool going forward - so not as simple as it looks.

Even if Auba was a FWD, you could use 2FT or -4 to sort it out. Depends on fixtures of course. I'd be rushing to get KDB as soon as they play, I wouldn't mind waiting an extra week or two for United assets tbh.

Man City are probably the best team in Europe against the lowblock. KDB would find a way and Aguero only ever needs one or two chances.

Close to zero preseason only adds to it to my mind..

Even if this was an international selection before a big tournament I'd be questioning throwing so so much new altogether at once. Talent yes but it's about knowing how to play together and working as a unit with the rest of the team. Thing like pressing etc come into it too.

Just as well Frank isn't contemplating fiddling with new defence and midfield too 🙂

If points are tied rankings are separated by transfers made, so it won't be vastly more than 10k. 2358 points with 58 transfers is 10523 OR if that helps.
