Want to work for Fantasy Football Scout? Get in touch

As we gear up for the start of the 2020/21 season, we at Fantasy Football Scout are frantically working behind the scenes to make improvements for our site users and subscribers.

We have a number of exciting developments in the pipeline but we’ll need an additional body to help us roll out the changes we have planned.

This time we are looking for someone to take on a full-time tech-based role.

We want a front-end web developer with experience capturing requirements and delivering projects.

We are looking for the following skills from our candidates:

FRONT-END

  • HTML, JavaScript, and CSS
  • Sass
  • React
  • jQuery
  • Bootstrap
  • AJAX

EXPERIENCE

  • BSC Computer Science or related 2.1 min
  • Two years minimum commercial experience

We mostly work remotely but, on occasion, we like to get together in person – so if you are based in/around London (or able to work there now and again), that would be beneficial.

However, those that work outside of London should most definitely still apply. Talent is more important to us than postcode!

Flexibility of hours is also preferable.

Based on past experience with our job adverts, we need to stress that it may take a little time to look through and respond to applications.

If you want to get involved with the next chapter of the site, please drop us a line with your CV at jobs@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Mitrovic is nailed and very likely to be involved when Fulham scores so would choose him over the other two. Dependant on fixtures though.

Is there a way to compare promoted team's players on FFS members area without going to other external websites? Like I want to use comparison tool between Ayling and Dallas, or see who played the most minutes of Leeds players last season?

I think it’s too much of the budget spent on defence. Teams usually take several gameweeks to tidy up their defence and start to keep CS regularly.

Also higher proportion compared to what? Season average? There are other factors impacting the season average compared to a single month average, it’s not the right data to benchmark against.

AWB the only one I am considering to change, depending on what the fixtures are. I am open to Saliba, if he is actually nailed, but I haven't seen any evidence of his nailedness yet. May go Maguire as that guy plays every game.

See what you're doing in defence and I quite like the idea of splitting risk. Trouble is if you save 4.5 on AWB I'm not seeing where the extra 1 mill makes much of a difference.

AWB to a 4.5 and Stephens to a 5.5 midf. It's a great price point with loads of 5.5 options to bandwagon.

Yeah. I just think a solid premium defence is the way to play FPL (acknowledge most people disagree) as it lets you focus transfers on captaincy and moving in the 5.5m - 7.0m player that emerges as the season value pick (like Ings last season).

As I said, still open on AWB. Could be Aurier, Maguire, Tierney, Saliba, Davies, etc.

    3. WVA

AWB is an awful pick at this stage. Do you not think Wood could match Jimenez for 2m less or Mitrovic even?

      1. diesel001
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Nope. I think Jimenez is an even better pick this season with no EL to play in. A consistent player that you never bench or captain. Which means transfers can be focused on the captaincy and jumping on the 5.5m - 7.0m player that emerges (such as Ings last season).

  7. The best defences
    Ze_Austin

With full manpower and based on regularly seen performances over the last three seasons, the best fixture-proof defences in the league are Liverpool, Man City and Wolves. In FPL, that gives you TAA, Robbo, VVD, Laporte and Doherty when you add regular attacking returns and starts

Last season, each of these defences lost major manpower for sizeable chunks of the season. Alisson (to a lesser extent, Gomez), Laporte and Boly

These means they underperformed, as each of the missing assets is not known to be injury prone. Three best defences underperforming in one season, and those five defenders got fewer points than they should have had... Yet they still beat attackers at their price or below

I'll add two other defences to this list: Mourinho's Spurs defence is better than almost everybody else when you remove Lloris's injury absence. Man U had among the best xGC stats possible (so Ole sets them up well), but might only reach their CS potential with improvements on personnel, which can be added to by Maguire on set piece goals from Bruno's delivery (he only played 14 goals) and Wan-B + Shaw/Williams given licence to bomb forward

As for the fixture dependent good defences, I don't think SHU will be quite the same without Hendo, but it is possible. Burnley depends more on the system than the keeper, so should be fine for rotating someone like 4.5 Taylor when fit or his replacement when injured (just avoid any game against top 8) or a set-and-forget GK with saves. Arsenal under Arteta posted some good defensive numbers and has the potential to be fixture-proof, with Saliba (4.5) expected to be nailed. If this happens and they rack up clean sheets, Tierney's assist potential takes him to a possible 160+-point season, which is a possible set-and-forget option. Arsenal will be easier to assess after a few games, as they still seem to be in transition

It's safe to stay away from other defences in the league until we see how they do. Yes, Newcastle, Leeds and the like could do well for clean sheets against fellow lower half teams, but neither is as reliable as Burnley in those easy games, because Burnley is the only team currently in the EPL that always parks the bus against any opposition, which makes them golden vs bottom half. Everybody else (yes, including SHU and Palace) tends to attack their "winnable" games

      Nice post.

I am not sure about Arsenal, I don't think their underlying defensive numbers improved that much under Arteta however Saliba sounds looks he's class.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Not the best, but they did improve. And why I'm bringing them into the fixture-proof conversation is that Arteta has parked the bus against tough teams since he came in, which previous managers didn't do. If, and only IF they back this up with clean sheets as the season progresses it might become liable to get Tierney as a cheap premium-value defender or just rotate Saliba in for the super easy games you'd expect them to control well. I'm not advocating for starting the season with any of their defenders. Just starting their potential. As with any form of potential, it may just not work out that way for them

Query your point about Burnley there. My memory/research says something different.

Have you checked the Palace clean sheet record against bottom 10 sides in the last two seasons? Suspect you'll find every cs this season was bottom 10 - that's a 50% success rate. They had just under 50% in 2018/19 too against bottom 10. This time they just did less well against top 10.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

Burnley had 15 clean sheets last season, two of which were against top 8 sides: https://www.transfermarkt.com/nick-pope/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/192080/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/1132

Palace is among the best of the rest, yes. But they are closer in reliability to the rest of the budget defenders than they are to Burnley... With Taylor or another Burnley 4.5 really standing out at 4.5

If your reservation is about Burnley defence being independent on their keeper, we could just go through the past three seasons with two major keepers... And how badly Heaton did at Villa

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

No I was looking the point in your final paragraph that seemed misleading 🙂 You're now looking at overall cs record - a different point to the one made there.

          See also post below

Burnley were fatally awful in 2018/19 - Eiropa some excuse. They were anomalously great in 2019/20 and hit their likely form in 2017/18. I'm thinking that that is where they are most likely to end up. Pope is decent but no more. he is not worth another 7 cs over 2018/19 form.

Another decent midrange side with an overpriced keeper this time

Did the research on Palace this time last year.

Forget now if it was bottom 10 or bottom 12 but they had over 40% cs rate in those fixtures once Guiata replaced Hennessey. Guaita was the best value gk start of last season but selected by no one. He was even missed out on a value guide on here as his ownership was too low to be thought significant!

The pattern last season was exactly the same until lockdown where they were just a cs off SU and Burnley. Post restart form has changed season record. Could be significant tor not. Were Palace on the beach having reached safety in 29 or was there a significant failure that will run in to this season?

      1. Andy_Social

But at the start of the season their defence is shot to pieces. Oddly, they were under-manned at the start of last season IIRC.

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

They were undermanned all season in fact - at no point did they have all first choice defence. Mostly they had 2 out.

This time last year lots had Palace as relegation candidates because of no AWB. Misapprehension. Roy is a system manager and the strength is the collective. There was a fall off but actually fairly minimal by having Kelly Ward on the right.

If Dann has indeed signed new contract then they have a similar looking defence to most of last season, Mitchell is not a downgrade in defensive terms - more in attack. PvA is not a great defender and Roy has dropped him before.

      2. Ze_Austin

Injuries. While the defences in my original post have their main personnel returning, Palace is completely bare bones now. One to avoid until things improve... And then, yes. They're among the more reliable cheap guys. I mean, Wan-B at 4.0 wasn't long ago, and I stated the season with him in my XI then because I expected what happened

This led them to a price hike last season, but they still matched their potential against lower teams... Making Kelly and Guaita template members at some points

Now? I have Mitchell 4.0 on my bench, because I hope something might happen again

So, yes. I do agree with you. But I still feel Burnley outperforms them on trustworthiness. Might be good to go with both and rotate if fixtures somehow bless us with the permission

Just don't see that Burnley are that much more likely than any other defence in their general range. I'd as happily have KWP as Taylor for instance. Time will tell

And yes I think Palace defence is an early avoid and Mitchell the one to have if there's a 4,0 spot spare

I'm doubting this beyond the Wolves City Liverpool point. The conclusion about Burnley is the one I'm sceptical about. If you take the last 3 seasons - premise in opening - then their record is nothing special. One great one bad one goodish. They only look standouts if you take last season as their likely performance this time. Always possible but 15 cs is a likely very maximum for a team of that profile. Rarely does a team around 10 in the table get near that.

I also query slightly that Newcastle SU and Palace attacked more in winnable games. Or better said I think there is a logical gap here. They may have attacked more but they defended in exactly the same way. Certainly this is true of Palace the team I know best. They had an outstanding cs record against bottom 10 and they were very system based to the extent that injury absences had relatively little effect. Know SU and Newcastle less well but memory is that rhyme performed in much the same way. The one differencebeing Newcastle changed there system post lockdown.

Well written, thx. By the way, the Ben White situation means that both Dallas and Ayling could both be traps. By sacrificing one heavy mid, we can get much better defenders. However, this could be the season where tv will probably matter quite a lot later and expensive defenders are not money making machines. On the other hand they can be trusted and should give possibility to use transfers elsewhere.

It's possible to take one midfield/forward slot and have a rotating 4th defender with TAA, Robbo and Doc as fixture-proof constants, so you still get value from the available 4.5s... And lose a streaky/unpredictable 6.0 to 6.5m forward or 5.0 to 6.5m midfield slot

Excellent, excellent post. A much-needed one for me too I think, I feel guilty of ignoring the amazing defensive assets at our disposal and focusing on the starry riches instead. I believe there are four world class defenses - who can gain 20+ CS - in the PL at the moment: Wolves, Spurs, Liverpool, City.

Wolves - Very secure and functional with a well setup 3-5-2/3-4-3. Their CS record with Boly is absolutely outstanding and they also gain from having no European football this year, a fact that hurt them early last season. I see no reason not to have Vinagre (4.5), Doherty (6) feels .5 underpriced however I'm not sure if he attacks as much in a 3-4-3 - a more likely formation to be played with the amount of wingers they have. Would love input on this!

Spurs - Mourinho is the defensive master and in his legendary second season, he's finally got a DM whose stats are absolutely outstanding and a DM is always key to a Mou team. Great progress was shown after the restart. The defensive assets, however aren't particularly good - none of the back 4 look appealing. Lloris is a real gem though, best PPM from nailed keepers last season. The way Mourinho sets up is absolutely perfect for FPL keepers, look at De Gea in 16/17! The similarities with Lloris are uncanny: Amazing shot stoppers, solid command of the box, mistakes playing out of the back. Even at 5.5, I believe he's well worth it over his 4.5 counterparts. Ryan (plays for Brighton), Meslier (unlikely to get enough saves to earn the BPS desired), McCarthy (he's decent but question marks over Southampton defense) don't appeal greatly to me.

Liverpool - We know what they'll do, how much will you spend on them? Feels like a lot of players are ignoring Robertson, I expect that will be a mistake many will be hasty to correct.

Manchester City - They'll get CS's just through pure domination, however I'm against Laporte as I believe he'll be rotated now that he has a capable direct backup in Ake. Total avoid for me.

Quickly wrote this up, inspired by your quality post. Thank you!

        Good points there.

Wolves: I see the sentiment, but Doc has done well in either formation. It will take a while to get the stats to show this in detail, but I know because I had him for a sizeable chunk of their post-Europa season, and he was a captaincy candidate for me, without seeing his returns affected by formation. That's how much I trust him with Boly fit. I blamed myself often when I capped attackers over Doherty and TAA in some glaringly obvious fixtures, due to the "never cap a defender" bias, and got bitten hard. I've learnt from this and will trust my own analysis now

About Laporte: Not sure Pep will be bold enough to heavily rotate (rather than occasionally rest) a fit Laporte except during fixture congestion, but it is possible... Note that Laporte didn't start every game in his best season either, but came away with 21 unreal clean sheets in 3056 out of 3420 possible minutes. He's also one of the targets for indirect set pieces since he brings the rare height to the squad (and can flick the ball on as well), and that will be helped by KDB's pinpoint dead ball crosses. There are negatives about owning him - one of which is the 6.0M price tag when he won't start every game; another being the fact that there are 5.5m defenders or 4.5m rotating pairs that have the potential to beat him for points even with those clean sheets - so I've actually never had him in a draft since the game launched

About Liverpool: I have Robertson and will cap TAA if I feel a Pool fixture deserves taking the captaincy off Fernandes/KDB for that GW. This is why I don't have Salah. This will change if Pool turns out to be terrible all of a sudden (or an Alisson/VVD injury), just the same way any other long term FPL plan can change in one day

About Lloris: Yes. Absolutely yes. Lloris is nailed in my team all season, Europa or not, until an injury or the emergence of an unavoidably better keeper

Nice discussion points here, agree with lots of this. My main issue is the attackers looking way too enticing! I make a nice, balanced looking team with Lloris-TAA-Robbo-Vinagre-Ayling and then I remember the likes of Aguero and Kane and then I want to tear it up again! Hopefully I'll be able to master the impulse once fixtures come out. Again, great stuff man. Any thoughts on 5 ATB in general?

Yea I think Spurs and Arsenal will both be good defensive pics this season.
Lloris and Saliba/Tierney are options, most people wont start with them, but they will jump on board soon enough.
Lloris had crazy stats after the restart

How can anyone pick Fernandes at 10.5!? Overpriced pen merchant. I can’t stand seeing him dance into a pen like a right arm off spinner on a dusty sub continent wicket and then cover his eyes as if he has just scored a screamer. Does my absolute head in that bell end 😆

One of the reasons why they get many pens is because of much speed and action in the box. Can't see that changing.
They could regress a bit but Bruno would still score loads of points.

You’re delusional if you believe that. City and Liverpool have more fluid dynamic attacks and still receive a mere proportion of penalties. Expect a huge regression

A bit of a repost, only 1 reply last time. What works best? Would like to minimise transfer needs: have a settled team.

    a) Heavy Midfield: 3 x 11.5+, Bamford type 2nd striker (5.5), 4.5 keeper, 3 X 4.5 defenders
    b) Medium midfield: 2 x 11.5+, Pulisic type for 3rd mid (8.5), Jiminez, 4.5 keeper, 3 X 4.5 defenders
    c) Light midfield: 2 x 11.5+, ASM/ Klich/ whoever (5.5) as 4th mid, Jiminez, Pope and Doherty/ Laporte

Thanks to raga, i took spreadsheet of last season's scoring on last day of the season.

Today while checking mobile i found that so checked, midpriced strikers are my doom !

Or let me say striker's in particular. I had 2 in almost 3/5 gw's from all Strikers. No doubt when they started firing on all cylinders (Jimenez Ings Vardy) i jumped very high in OR.

One season later I'm facing same situation again 😀

    I hate these 6/7m attackers !!
Bloody difficult to understand when they can score points.
Very very tempted now to go 4 at back with Taa Robbo Doherty & Vinaigre/Taylor rotation (placeholders) and go with only 2 striker's of 6.5 ish range & have Soucek as 5th Midfielder.

Might be possible. Will have to be too much patient with that expensive Defense though 😮

Shaw if comes back from injury can help save 1m on Doherty or can get him for a 4.5m guy ....

    Hmmmm

    1. FPL Theorist
      • 4 Years

Completely agree as far as hating 6/7m attackers. I'm actually starting Soucek atm, allows me to have only him as cheap attacker with two mid-priced strikers (Martial + Jimenez) in a 4-4-2. I don't have Robbo though.

      1. Amey
        • 5 Years

Those Defenders are turning my head tbh ...
I might go with Martial though yet. Avoiding Robbo & Doherty for VVD & 4.5.
        Let's see ....

Robbo can outscore both Martial & Jimenez this season for 1.5/2 m less 🙂

      Agree on midpriced strikers

They seem to appear on season value charts all the time but that's retrospective analysis, They're priced like that because they re so unpredictable. I did nicely this time but that's only because I got Pukki and Ings almost perfectly right. Happy to accept that that was a fluke

Looking at Jim Ings and thinking that I'll accept their "predictability" this time - one anyway there. They're priced attractively and can be downgraded if need be. Wilson a dangerous precedent mind
