Fantasy Premier League managers got a first look at Leeds United players in a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool in Gameweek 1 – but are their assets ready for mass FPL ownership?

Marcelo Bielsa’s men certainly entertained the neutrals at Anfield with their bold and free-flowing approach, finding the net three times at the home of the defending champions. Not a bad start to life back in the top flight.

To help refine our watchlist of Leeds options, we have taken a look at that match in more detail to get a better understanding of the Whites this season.

As this article uses Opta data only those with Fantasy Football Scout Premium Membership can access it in full.

What were the average positions of Leeds players?

Morning all, best move here? Had set up to WC GW3 but unsure if needs it:

    A) Save FT (-4 mini WC in GW3)
    B) VVD -> Digne (WC in GW3)
    C) Antonio -> Wilson (WC in GW3)

    McCarthy
    Trent, Virgil, Bellerin, Holding
    Salah, Auba, Son, ASM
    Vardy, Antonio

    Steer, Mitchell, Bissouma, Davis

Not sure I’d want double Pool and Arsenal defence, latter is fine this week.

Antonio probably needs to go too.

      -4 next week

Anything worth a hit here? Will see what CHE news is. Am obv tempted by the template Havertz > JamRod but avoiding the hit would be nice!

    0FT 0itb
    Steer
    TAA, Davies, KWP
Salah, Auba (C), Havertz*, ASM, Soucek
    Werner, Martial
    (McCarthy) (Taylor, Mitchell, Brewster)

GL all! Nice to see teams starting to diverge and looking pretty different in some cases!

    Cheers

Is there a chelsea presser today? Would be good to here what lamps says.

This from Chelsea fc web match preview.

'The squad on the South Coast was missing several key members. It could still be too soon for debuts from England’s Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva, who joined their new team-mates on Wednesday, and injured Morocco midfielder Hakim Ziyech. Central midfielder Mateo Kovacic is available again after suspension, though, and Christian Pulisic, whose dribbles on the left wing tore the Reds apart in July, may return.'

Thanks mate. My gut says drop Havertz for now until he proves himself a bit and if JamRod could be on pens and getting in on assists it could be a good move.

Yes mine too. Will see if Chelsea have a presser today 1st.

          If Pulisic fit

    bottomed, would appreciate some feedback...

already taken a stupid hit to get to this

    McCarthy
    TAA Davies Holding
    Aubameyang(c) Salah Fernandes Soucek
    Werner Wilson Adams

    Steer Vinagre Mitchell Davis

not happy with the team. Vinagre, Adams, Holding and Davies are either deadwood or will very soon be deadwood.

Ride it out this week, or hit WC? My thinking is i'll probably do it next week anyway, so should i undo the hit?

My team is over 50% the same and I too am not happy with it. That said, it is not sufficiently unbalanced to merit going beyond that hit. Sit on it - points could well come from all of them (maybe barring Soucek).

        • 9 Years

Firstly I dont think they are interested in altering format just for more views or subscribers.

Long form conversation allows for thorough discussion on every topic without having to leave topics out.

Plus its 1hr 51 mins this week and doesn't start till 9 mins in and the Scoutcast and most other pods are 60-90 mins its not that much more, also when it comes to high quality content I would much rather watch 90-120 mins than multiple videos of average content that are 30-40 mins.

There is not a descent pick at 4.0.Imo get a 4.0 defender and a 4.5 to rotate with the others in their difficult fixtures(for example gw5 for Digne).

Maybe someone who had a poor GW1 (or didn't have a fixture), or has very low ownership.

Reckon Sterling will get his chances against the Wolves defense this week. There was a period in the second half when Billy Sharp and Enda Stevens penetrated the right hand side of the Wolves defense at will where Traore was playing. It was only after Nuno introduced Burr, who was a natural RB that Wolves tightened up. Looking at the mid week lineups it is likely to be the same team for Wolves and so Sterling should get some joy against Traore

I really expect Richarlison to explode this weekend against WBA in the early KO. In fact if it wasn't for the early KO he'd be my captain. At just 10.8% ownership though I guess he's a differential as it is. Whilst I can see why DCL is a popular investment at £1m less, Richarlison could have easily put 2 or 3 past a woeful Spurs in GW1.

He had 7 shots in that game, 5 coming from inside the box and 2 classed as big chances. He looked lively and he will thrive playing in the final 3rd of this Everton team much more this season. He had the highest up-field position on the heatmap and the way WBA played in the opener, I expect him to punish them.

Surprisingly, Vardy only had one penalty box touch not including the 2 he put away from the spot. Though Harvey Barnes was an absolute handful cutting inside from the left creating 5 shots for himself all inside the box. This bodes well for Richarlison this week.

They conceded 11 shots from inside the box in total and Leicester were far from their best.

My armband is going on Auba this week as I also fancy him to hit double digits and his his ownership isn't worth taking on. Though I'm excited about owning the Brazilian in the opener more than anyone this week.

      Good luck to all

Right now it's a case of stop Kane and you stop Spurs, except for the one game in every four/five when Son plays a blinder. Bale's arrival will give opposing defences a whole lot more to think about, which should mean more room for Kane.

Front 3 of Son, Bale and Kane. Can only benefit Kane.

Good point, any idea how much Bale would cost. He could offer better value. Depending on who gets free kicks and penalties

    " the Whites were lined-up in more of a 4-2-3-1 "

That's because the 4-2-3-1 is the "opposing" formation of the 4-3-3. It's how Bielsa sets up his teams to help apply an immediate press.

    Opposing formation:
    1. One more defender to their attackers (433: Three attackers. 4231: Four defenders)
    2. Mirror their central midfield man-for-man (433: One back, two forwards. 4231: One forwards, two back)
    3. One less attackers to their defenders (433: Four defenders. 4231: Three attackers)

Note: He calls the 4-2-3-1 a 4-2-1-3. So there are 3 attackers in a 4231.

This is why you will see him play a back three when facing two-striker systems.

In the lecture he said he firmly believes systems should be symmetrical. So I'd say either.

When they play a back 3, they'll both be wingbacks.

Isn't it 4-1-4-1 which becomes 4-1-2-3 in attack and 4-3-2-1 in defence?

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years

No, it's not anything. He mirrors the opponent. He literally says this in the lecture.

His team has a base structure of the same players, but they adapt to the opposition. For example, when facing two strikers, Phillips will drop between the CBs to form a back 3.

Him, Guardiola and Cryuff all with the "one more defender than your opponent" philosophy. Bielsa seems to take it further than anyone else, it would be amusing to see a team switch from 2, 1, to 3 strikers just to mess with him! It's also impacted in that halfback role - Busquets, Fernandinho - where Guardiola can switch from a 3ATB and 4ATB seamlessly, giving lots of tactical flexibility.

The players understand his philosophy, so if the opposition change, the Leeds players will automatically adapt and mirror them.

It's going to fascinating watching them this season.

What if they play four strikers 😛

True, his players are very flexible, comes down to his class coaching. I wish the goals weren't so shared around though, at least for FPL. Leeds vs Fulham will be very intriguing

Bielsa was obsessed with LVG's mid 90s Ajax team. Probably a shame that LVG didn't continue in that vain in his later roles.

Agreed. The Bosman ruling ripped that excellent Ajax team apart and his attempts to recreate it at Barca didn't reach the same heights, but was still good.

After that he seemed to change his tactics. I think a 90s LDG would have been a success at Man Utd rather than the one who became their manager. He also seemed to struggle with stars in their prime who had their own opinions.

Leicester's signing of Under, a right winger, should technically increase Barnes' minutes or nailedness, right? It suggests their preference for a formation that utilises wingers and Barnes has always played on the left.

It decreases the probability of Leicester going for a 3-5-2 formation (where Barnes doesn't start) in my opinion.
