With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

Niggling ongoing groin problem, he's been injured for ages - he plays through it by only touching the ball half a dozen times a match!

      Great differential.

Admittedly West Ham looking good (shockingly), vardy done pretty much nothing except score penalties and West Ham won’t be as open as city were chasing the game.

I have no interest in Vardy. I trust the underlying stats and he's been shockingly uninvolved. When he was on his hot streak last year he was much more involved and getting shots off.

i guess the fact he is scoring when not getting chances is a good omen? because surely at some point he will start getting chances. especially with maddison back.

      that is the question.

i am torn between keeping, or moving to ings/jimenez. the only reason i would keep is so that i can get Vardy next GW (ings/Jimenez blocks that).

Maybe but with some good options of striker around 6.5 that produce goals and on pen, i don't see why people have to pick Brewster on a team that don't score goal

and beside, it's better to have Burke as 4.5 mid playing forward

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 7 Years

Is there a big benefit of having Brewster rather than Bissouma on the bench? Not sure if it’s all worth a formation change for given the value up front this season...

Yes but not worth using 2 FTs or changing your formation just for that.

Some wildcard teams will have Brewster as their playing striker instead of bench fodder, then have Salah, KdB, Sterling, Bruno in midfield...

An avid Salah owner over the years to the annoyance of my main mini league rivals.
Though today I will be taking him out for Sterling for the next 3 weeks then more than likely swap them back.

    Salah's next 3:- Villa (a) Everton (a) Sheff Utd (h)
    Sterling's next 3:- Leeds (a) Arsenal (h) West Ham (a)

Whilst it may not seem a huge swing on paper, I believe Sterling will outscore him by a margin during this period. Granted the international break is shortly upon us, but injuries aside I see it as an aggressive switch which should pay off.

Villa look very solid and quite exciting at the minute and we could well see Barkley making an appearance. Barkley and Grealish supporting in a front 3 sounds very exciting if Villa chose to go down that path. Everton are rejuvenated due to some excellent signings and whilst Sheff Utd have started the season poorly, that game will not be a walk in the park for Liverpool I'm certain.

I look at this week's fixture for City and I can't go into the Leeds game with just KDB. Leeds look entertaining. Their results are reminding me of the Kevin Keegan's Newcastle team who had to score 3 or 4 to win a game (and quite often did). In their 3 PL games this season, they've conceded a hell of a lot of chances even though they picked up 6 points against Fulham then Sheff Utd.

Conceding 22 shots at against Liverpool, 14 against Fulham and 14 against Sheff Utd. Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt keep a similar approach as he did in the opener against Liverpool having belief his team will score goals.

This bodes well for Sterling and after his brace midweek against Burnley, I believe he will find plenty of opportunities to find the net.

GW 5 welcomes Arsenal to the Etihad and whilst I may not throw the armband on Sterling, I do fancy this fixture more than Salah's in the Merseyside Derby.

Then it's West Ham and he will definitely get the captaincy vote from me. The last 5 fixtures between these sides shows a huge margin in class. West Ham scoring just the 1 goal with City finding the net 16 times! In the same fixture last season, Sterling bagged a hatty in a convincing 5 - 0 mauling.

Whilst my views are clearly bias due to my mind already being made up, I believe it is a proactive move and one which will excite me going into, and coming out of the international break.

Good luck to all this weekend.

Excellent stuff, totally agree. I'll most likely go Salah -> Sterling (C) too, it's also worth considering Villa have did well against Liverpool twice last season. It's the fun move, Sterling should exploit that high line and get many opportunities in a high scoring match. I see a hat-trick in this game, here we go!

Cheers Flair. I had planned on swapping premiums this season when I felt there would be a decent points swing. It's much easier without big value involved at this stage of the season too.

I have Salah Sterling(C) no DeBruyne, I had to remove Martial so if I wanted double up (for a Leeds) I would need a -4 to get DeBruyne in.. I personally think this would be suicidal?

Salah could well find the net so I guess it depends on who you think will outscore who over the next 2-3 GWs. Personally an armband on Sterling should be enough if he does well

Morning Pep!cheers for this post.I always read your posts and always agreed as i agree now.I would like to add a parameter though on Salah's case.He still hasn't find his form and when he finds it we all know that he must be in our teams. If you also see Liverpool's first six results in the last three seasons you'll see that Mo has scored or assisted in many of them.Don't you worry that Sterling played 90 minutes in the cup game and now against Leeds could get subbed off after 60-70 minutes?

Hi mate and thanks for that. Been a bit shy on here this season but purely down to work taking a lot of my time up.
I removed Salah with a heavy heart but I strongly believe Sterling is on for a very good week.
Yes it's Pep... .and yet again he's come out and said Sterling's recovery is exceptional and he can play every 72 hours no problem.
My feeling is he starts and could start well. He could easily brace in the first half which would increase his chances of being on the pitch long enough to complete his hatty. Yes it seems wishful thinking but it's what my gut feeling is yelling at me 🙂

I can't have them both currently but I've no doubts at some point I will

He has as good a chance as anybody. He is on form and City are starting to be found out defensively. Not having a proper centre forward is hurting them as the chances they normally create are not being finished. Hence pressure on the defence to hold out.

When will the Werner price fall come? He is being offloaded zealously. I still hold him. For this week anyway.

Morning all. In my draft league and Greenwood is available. Would you transfer him in for one of the below:

    A) Klich
    B) Podence
    C) Trossard
    D) Soucek

I also want to get rid of Stevens and which would be your priority to get in his place out of the below:

    A) Lamperty (have dunk)
    B) Semedo
    C) Saiss
    D) Dias

    A) Werner -> Jim
    B) Werner & ASM -> DCL & Foden/Zaha/Barnes (-4)

Is it worth to take the hit?

Selection dilemma! My own fault for wild carding in too many starters last week.... which three defenders would you start?

    1. Justin
    2. James
    3. Saiss
    4. TAA
    5. Lamptey

Thanks both. I could start four and leave Lamptey on the bench but I have enough trouble with leaving out one of my front 8!
