The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game. 

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

      hes not a good player technically imo but gets himself into great positions and can finish. hes relatively cheap and now as great service with the likes of Rich and Jhames is a great FPL asset. all that being said I still don’t own him

      I think the addition of Rodriguez has made a massive difference in terms of creativity. If he keeps getting chances from 6 yards out, I’d wager he’ll put his fair share away. A clear buy if there ever was one.

      His positioning is much improved, physically he looks stronger with age and confidence must be high after two hat tricks in September.

      Sure he could go off the boil but seems a bit silly to bet against him at this moment.

    Captain Salah here.

    I'm not buying into the Villa defence hype at all. Per game, they've conceded the second most chances from their left flank (4, Leeds top on 5), and that's against two of the worst attacking outfits in the league at this stage

    Someone talk me out of it!?

      As long as Martinez makes 12 saves, Salah brace would be perfect.. I think Liverpool can destroy any team, Villa have not really been tested yet, and I think Salah will get a return of some sort.. I still think it’s really hard to dismiss a Man City Captaincy option this week

      Agreed. Think he and Jimi (my other option) will both return, but even with an easier fixture, I still would be more surprised by Jimi banging in a hat-trick than Salah. It would be a tougher choice if I had KDB

    AM I the only one concerned by KDB two last games? Played really deep and did not look like wanting to turn things around. Like against leicester, he seemed pis*ed off and was wandering about, mostly walking and being far from the box. Very strange.

    Can't decide what to do... already brought in Jimenez this week. 2 in the bank.

    ASM STERLING FERNANDES
    DCL JIMENEZ KANE

    I could bring in SALAH and BAMFORD for Kane and ASM for a -8
    Or MANE and CHE ADAMS for Kane and ASM for a -8

    Either of those worth it? Feel like I need some Liverpool representation. Hmmmm

    This Son to any replacement for -4 is actually annoying me. It would have been such a easy decision, if I didn't do Soucek to Podence for -4 last week -_-. It haunts me.

      Just bench him then. He is almost certain to be back after IB given that they aren't ruling him out for the Man Utd match for sure. They have a great fixture run after that. Not worth getting a -4 for.

    Really want triple Liverpool defence on wildcard, but gameweek 6 and 7 Salah is by far and away the best captain option which makes it a non-option. Team overall looks so much better without him though.

    Very indecisive this week whether to leave team as is or at least swap Auba for Salah with my 1 ft. Wildcard is tempting as struggling in my leagues and want a few players like Havertz and Doherty out ASAP. Any recommendations welcome!

    I am not going to captain salah in next 3 GWS, so it is worth to do salah > Sterling(C) as a hit so that i can double up pool defence next GW.
