Sterling, Cancelo and Foden benched as Burnley visit Man City without Pope

Pep Guardiola has had the last laugh on Fantasy Premier League managers once again with a textbook rotated line-up for a favourable home fixture.

With the division’s lowest scorers in Burnley coming to the Etihad Stadium, he has taken the opportunity to leave Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), João Cancelo (£5.6m) and Phil Foden (£6.5m) out of the starting line-up, leaving all three of them on the bench.

Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) is handed the left-back berth in Gameweek 10 while Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) staff the flanks of the front-three ahead of Sterling.

Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) and Rodrigo (£5.4m) are trusted with the central midfield slots alongside Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m), which means there is no room for Foden.

Those who opted for Rúben Dias (£5.5m) as a way of covering the Manchester City defence for a favourable fixture will be more pleased than Cancelo owners, as the centre-back starts once again.

Meanwhile, Burnley have moved away from 4-4-2 for this trip, lining Chris Wood (£6.2m), Jay Rodriguez (£5.8m) and Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) in a 4-3-3 formation.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Mendy, Stones, Dias, Walker; Gundogan, Rodrigo, De Bruyne; Torres, Jesus, Mahrez.

Burnley XI (4-3-3): Peacock-Farrell; C Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Benson, Westwood; Rodriguez, Wood, A Barnes.

Sterling in horrible form and has been benched 3 of the last 5 games against Burnley.

Foden completely out of favor and not trusted in the physical PL.

Cancelo played tons of minutes and Pep literally told us to expect rotation in this gameweek.

None of these players were particularly surprising benchings.

Historically KDB had missed quite a few games vs. Burnley too (or limited minutes, lower scores).

Midweek rest gave a big hint though, as did those who played.

Anyone know the VAR guidelines inside-out wanna tell me if this is all true or where it's going wrong?

For VAR to recommend a ref's decision is amended, the error that the ref has made needs to be clear and obvious. These calls are a bit more objective in that, although the VAR might need to make a somewhat subjective call about whether something has occurred and is a foul, the error is regarding what the referee has sees (or thought he's seen). If he is wrong, or has missed something, the VAR can recommend an amendment as the video systems has essentially filled in the information that the referee has missed.

Applying the phrase 'clear and obvious' to anything but this particular circumstance is misleading.

To amend the decision, a foul itself doesn't have to be clear and obvious. The error needs to be clear and obvious.

If a ref gives a foul for somthing he felt was 60% a foul (ie not clear and obvious), that is fine, but VAR can recommend amendment to the decision if the ref saw contact that, based on video evidence, clearly didn't happen. It's in that sense, that this is more 'objective'.

To recommend a ref goes to a monitor, a potential foul does not need to be clear and obvious. It is only a potential foul. This is done because VAR shouldn't be making more subjective calls like this to 're-ref' the game. The ref is under no obligation to amend anything.

For a ref to overturn his own decision, the foul doesn't have to be clear and obvious. He can make a decision again from scratch (as he is the ref, not the VAR).

For a ref to overturn his own decision, his error does not have to be clear and obvious. Again, he is the ref, not the VAR.

People will always complain about VAR. People always complained before VAR too.

At least now people are abusing the ruling of var rather than abusing referees for making human errors

I don't understand. To respind to your point. I agree that it was a foul. Maybe even a clear and obvious foul. But I'm interested in whether it matters that it is or isn't a clear and obvious foul.

                • 14 Years
                3 years, 4 months ago

Of course it matters! It has to be a clear and obvious error, that's the current rule.
If its not a foul in the first place, then there is no error so clear and obvious doesn't come into it.

                  3 years, 4 months ago

Maybe the ref saw contact but thought it wasn't a foul. This is where the distinction between a clear and obvious foul versus a clear and obvious error comes into play. Conflating the two leads, as you are doing, leads to confusion, which is which I posted this.

                  1. Shteve

But it's nothing to do with the ref on the pitch, or what he or she did or didn't see or think. It's all to do with the VAR, if VAR sees the ref has made a clear and obvious error, they will then intervene..

        https://www.premierleague.com/news/1293321

It says here that "VAR is used only for "clear and obvious errors" or "serious missed incidents"".

If a penalty is considered a 'serious incident' and the referee wasn't looking at Welbeck and Robertson when the incident happens, then it seems that the 'clear and obvious' bit is disapplied.

A friend wrote this and think it’s a great point of view.
I reckon that even if VAR should look at that, if you determining whether is a clear and obvious then you should not show slow motion - should only be different angles at full speed as if they had a better view of the event

        1. Deulofail

I agree and disagree, although it's a seperate point from what I'm trying to understand with this thread.

Slo-mo can be useful. I think it should be used. But used sparingly and intentionally. It's absolutely absurd to see one single slo-mo shot played over and over, expecting the ref or VAR to make the correct decision based on that. It's like cherry-picking evidence and shoving it in someone's face, forcing them in a certain direction due to the dearth of evidence.

      After 3 seasons in the PL, we need by now to know quite well that Pep is not going to keep his 11 every other week. The only players I would say are generally nailed on are;

      Ederson
      Laporte
      Dias
      Walker
      KDB

Sterling starts most games, but now faces competition from.both Mahrez and the new boy. Foden is simply not nailed on at this point.

Jota was on zero baps. Soo u gained a point from him and u lost 7 with robbo. So u lost 6.

They add winning goal bonus during match now so he wouldn't have gotten more

Did Bruno to Salah this week(Yes I really sold Bruno)

Would you be regretting that right now?

I think Bruno will outscore Salah only cause Salah got taken off early.

But at least now you have him for wolves and Fulham

Not really mate. One doesn’t become an FPL Champion or a Loser based on one gameweek.

          Heads up fella. 🙂

Be content with the assist Salah’s got as Bruno will probably get the same or less. Southampton’s defence is solid.

The joy of Jota scoring having brought him in this week overshadows the sadness of Pool losing their clean sheet as a Robbo owner.

Time for a cup of tea

Could have been worse with almost an OG, but Robbo is a machine, amazing player and could have as well had that Assist. Fine margins.

Exactly, he is a fine FPL asset.

Got to hope it's a tight game and Foden gets subbed on for at least 30 minutes. Can see Cancelo coming on for a similar amount of time for Mendy.

Who do you have coming on if Cancelo has a no-show?

Bloody Riedewald for me with a 1-pointer...

Sterling is probably one of the most likely players to haul coming off the bench.

Let’s not panic yet fellow owners 🙂
