Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) and João Cancelo (£5.5m) have made surprise appearances in the Manchester City starting XI for Gameweek 11.

The two players missed out on the win over Burnley last time out and featured extensively in midweek Champions League action.

That had convinced many that the pair would be benched in the following Premier League game but they both start against Fulham.

Sterling plays on the left-hand side of an attacking midfield trio, joined there by Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) while Cancelo is preferred to Kyle Walker (£6.2m) at right-back, rather than left, which sees Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) make a second Premier League start in a row.

Pep Guardiola has been previously known to favour a rotation policy where players miss the first match of a three-game week and play the second two in succession, even if they are close together.

Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and Walker had recently strung together consecutive Premier League starts but neither one features in the first XI today.

The former is on the bench, while Walker is not in the squad at all, although Guardiola has reported that he is not injured. That’s about as classic Pep as we’re ever going to get.

Gabriel Jesus (£9.4m) leads the Manchester City attacking line while De Bruyne appears to be in a number 10 role rather than a member of a central midfield trio.

Meanwhile, Fulham are unchanged from the side that won 2-1 at Leicester, which sees Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) act as a lone centre-forward, Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m) providing the width either side of Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.9m).

For the second Gameweek in a row, Tom Cairney (£5.3m) and Aleksandar Mitrović (£5.6m) are named on the bench.

Manchester City XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; B Mendy, Stones, Dias, Cancelo; Gündogan, Rodrigo; Sterling, De Bruyne, Mahrez; Jesus.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; A Robinson, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Aina; Zambo Anguissa, Reed; Lookman, Loftus-Cheek, De Cordova-Reid; Cavaleiro.

What annoys me is no pundits are going to call out Sterling for what he us. A cheat.

That penalty was not being clever, or making sure to go down to win a penalty he earned

He was hardly touched and too a massive dive to con the referee.

    Sterling is a cheat.

It’s simple, refs generally don’t go fouls unless a player goes down. So therefor players has to go down under every foul to get a foul called. That was a foul. You can’t kick people in the knees

Only stops when refs don't reward players for doing it, and I feel like that'll never happen now as refs care more about consistency.

It has become worse this year. It feels like any touch in the box is now a penalty, which is ridiculous.

There’s nothing they can overturn. As there was contact, it becomes subjective whether there was enough contact to put Sterling off his shot.

Why cant they ask the ref to look at the monitor and make a subjective decision based on more evidence?

Well if the ref told the VAR that he saw a leg-breaking level of force in the contact, then maybe they would. But I presume he also thought the contact was minimal already.

No they dont. Pickford got off scot free.

And no ones owned up to any mistake so I guess we are left with a crappy system where the truth is best left ignored.

I'm responding to "Why cant they ask the ref to look at the monitor and make a subjective decision based on more evidence?" Not sure where you're taking us, but I'm getting out of this Uber.

Let me try and be more clear then.

When there is minimal contact like in this instance the VARs hands are tied eg. Not enough evidence to overturn.

But when the ref has said no pen like last week with Robertson, VAR is entitled to ask the ref to check the monitor and overturn his decision with no clear and obvious error.

This makes no sense to me. Minimal contact can clearly overturn a no, why cant it be at least checked on a yes?

                  1. Deulofail
                    • 10 Years
                    5 years, 3 months ago

Huh? Did the ref come out and saw he saw contact by Robertson, but decided it wasn't a pen? As far as I'm aware, he missed the incident, and VAR brought it to his attention, but I'm open to evidence of the contrary. If a referee can't tell what's happening, then VAR can recommend going to the monitor (for subjective calls), but in today's case, the ref was on top of it and already made the call.

No. I am saying minimal contact in the box is not necessarily a pen. It is subjective. Why not let the ref look at the screen in both instances.

Look at chill well incident against leeds. Identical imo to robbo yet VAR is happy.

You make it sound cut and dried when week after week they make decisions contrary to the week before.

My opinion is that minimal contact should be checked every time or that the refs live decision should be taken unless there is a clear and obvious error. Minimal contact is not clear and obvious

It’s impossible to be subjective when you see it in slow motion.

The NFL has a better solution where the referee can view multiple replays then make their call. But that takes a lot longer than we’d like in football.

I think he’d turned the defender so could get the shot off but it’s got to the point where they’re looking for contact just as much as creating space for a shot. It maybe even be their primary focus in the box now.. that’s the pity.

Better options in the upcoming months. It’s not about what they did in the last 11 weeks, it’s about who’s going to score in the next 11 weeks. Everton has no wingbacks fit, creativity has dropped, and tough fixtures

Captaincy blanks don't matter, points do. My target would be at least 7 points per captain, so at least 140 off 10 GWs - preferably more. Destroying that target right now though, so perhaps move it up to 8.

Woukdnt worry too much mate. I made the same move for -4.

Gell still be a rotation risk going forward. Plus, Cancelo hasn't actually got any real points yet. Dont sweat it.

His ownership is too high to sell, I'd only consider selling him if he blanks like 2/3 games on the trot or totally loses form.
Selling now when he is still performing and with that owenrship is a recipe for disaster. Better move a week late then a week early

Evertons over-all form isnt great though nor their fixtures, still think DCL can score vs anyone at the moment though

If a guy on a goal and assist already is at risk of no bonus then it just shows how effing stupid the whole thing is. Get it in the bin and overhaul it to make sense.
