Fantasy Premier League managers will already have one eye on the end of Gameweek 13 when Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) visits Sheffield United.

Manchester United are not in action until Thursday evening when their midfield maestro shoulders the responsibility of 1.2 million captain armbands.

No asset comes into Gameweek 13 backed by that many, although among the top 10,000 managers, he plays a secondary, yet not insignificant, role.

As you can see, Fernandes was seen as the best alternative to Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) for the Gameweek 13 captaincy, backed by 28.1% at this level.

The strength of the Portuguese international’s following makes for a gap of just 4.2 percentage points compared to Manchester City’s number 17, who was chosen as skipper by 32.3% of the top 10k – and blanked in a favourable home matching against West Bromwich Albion.

Meanwhile, at least 20% of the top 10k are expecting goals at Anfield on Sunday, despite predictions of Jose Mourinho spoiling the occasion with his big-game conservative approach.

That’s because 11.0% of these managers have captained Harry Kane (£10.9m), FPL’s highest-scoring asset with just one blank since Gameweek 2.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) has blanked just once at Anfield this season, convincing 9.1% of the top 10k to captain the Egyptian for Gameweek 13.

Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) completes the top-five continuing as a niche captain at this level with 5.4% backing for the armband ahead of facing Everton.

Incredibly, De Bruyne is still something of a differential among the top 10k.

Despite coming into Gameweek 13 as the most popular captain in this rank bracket, three more players can boast higher effective ownership.

As already alluded to, Fernandes is the most significant of these, sitting in 61.1% of top 10k squads and his captaincy backing taking him to effective ownership of 89.2%

Kane (81.2%) and Son Heung-min (78.5%) remain powerful effective ownership weapons, each one at least six percentage points better off than De Bruyne in this department.

This season best-performing Fantasy managers are slowly losing patience with the Chelsea defence.

Ben Chilwell (£6.2m) came into Gameweek 12 as the top 10k’s most-fashionable defender – sat in 56% of their squads at the last deadline.

However, James Justin (£4.9m) has overtaken him for Gameweek 13, edging past by 0.01 percentage points, although Chilwell has still suffered a decrease of 5.6 percentage points of his own.

Kurt Zouma (£5.7m) and Reece James (£5.3m) also suffered mild decreases in popularity at this level, owned by 30.1% and 24.3% respectively for Gameweek 12 and just 29.7% and 23.5% after Tuesday afternoon’s deadline.

For the second Gameweek in a row, the midfield is the area of biggest fluctuation, although the top-four players in this position have held onto their places in the template.

Diogo Jota‘s (£6.9m) injury sees him drop out of the top five while De Bruyne finally creeps in with 39.6% ownership.

Assessing how the top 10k made room for him in their squads is difficult considering that Salah’s ownership has stayed the same between Gameweeks 12 and 13, Son dipped from 79.9% to 77.3%, while Fernandes and Jack Grealish (£7.8m) have all increased their popularity at this level.

There has not been any sign of sacrificing funds up-front to facilitate changes in midfield either.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) suffered only a minor ownership decrease (from 72.2% to 71.1%), Kane’s has remained virtually stable and Patrick Bamford (£6.3m) became more popular, rising from 54.4% top 10k ownership to 57.6%.

Wildcards continue to fall slowly among the top 10k as another 1.2% of them pulled the trigger on a new squad for Gameweek 13.

Unsurprisingly, interest in the Triple Captain and Free Hit chips was low indeed, although there was a smattering of Bench Boost deployments.

In fact, roughly as many made use of the enhanced bench as did Wildcards this time out – an interesting decision considering recent announcements about Double Gameweek 19.

Continuing the trend of top 10k managers finally taking notice of De Bruyne, we can see that he is the most popular midfielder on Wildcarders at this level for Gameweek 13.

Only Kane was chosen more often by such managers for the midweek deadline, the general theme of these Wildcard selections clearly involving templating-up among the forwards and securing the key premium midfielders plus Grealish.

What’s the best strategy for people with WC for gw18/19?

    A) FH in gw18, build WC for gw19, if you want bench boost it
    Or
    B) FH on gw19, build WC for gw18 with strong bench

Just asking again as I didn’t get any replies on the last page. Those of you that are good with the price change predictions, does Soucek look like rising in 15 mins? Seems borderline to me from the FPLStats site? Thanks for any opinions!

    Robertson James Dier

    Or

    Robertson James Lamptey/Lewis rotation

    Or

    Robertson James Taylor/Balbuena rotation

A and C also have Brewster as the only other sub b has no Brewster

I wouldn't buy a Villa defender now. Fine to keep, especially Martinez for those who have him, but the upcoming fixtures aren't great and they don't have a dgw while also having a poor fixture for the dgw.

True. It is a bit of a risk. I was thinking of rotating him with Vestergaard when he has a tough fixture like city away, but probably better to go for someone cheaper like Taylor.

    Martinez 4.0m
    Robbo* Chilwell* Zouma* Dallas* 4.0m
    Salah* Bruno* KDB Grealish 4.5m
    Bamford* DCL Welbeck
Currently I have 7 players for DGW19. From now to GW19 I have 5 FT, so that I can have up to 12 DGW players without hits (given no injuries covid etc...). That makes me think, is BB GW19 really worth it? With 12 DGW players, your BB give you only 5 extra matches, just one more compared to BB in normal GW (4 extra matches).

I have the exact same forward line and will be transferring Vardy out for Kane. I think it's a close one because Kane is at home and has the potential to get double figures against Leicester's dodgy defence, but then Vardy scores almost every game so he has a great chance of scoring a goal.

People angry at City and saying dump their assets are talking nonsense.

City remain the best team in the league. That's not a statement of opinion, but of objective fact. They start games as the shortest price favourites, have the highest expected goals, and even though they're no longer slight favourites for the league, as they're 5 points behind, are still considered the strongest side by the objective betting markets.

Tonight they were 1/10 against WBA with an expected goals return of over 3. The fact it didn't materialise and they only scored once and didn't win is largely irrelevant. You can't be results orientated in your conclusion. KDB was the correct captain for this gameweek objectively. Anybody who says or thinks otherwise is just wrong.

Fantasy sports is not a gut instinct shot in the dark game. It's science. If you're ranked 3 million and you want a differential pick to give you the best chance of making a miracle run then go and captain a differential. But acknowledge it's a mathematically suboptimal decision.

City remain the team with the best prospects for their players going forward.

If KDBs two assists on a plate are scored suddenly everyone talks so differently.

It's sometimes fine margins, on another day he has a good score and everyone is talking about how obvious KDB was as a pick.

This is factually a bad take. I have City assets but that doesn’t take away from the fact they are failing to fire more often than not and currently sitting 6th, potentially 8th in the league when games in hand are counted. If you watched 90 mins today they were labored and ran out of ideas against arguably one of the weakest teams in the league. Is KDB suddenly a worthless asset - no, absolutely not, to your point they COULD hit five past their next opponents - but arguing they’re the best team in the league is 2018 talk.

but what else could it be?

Science is physicalism. Everything has laws, probabilities and likely outcomes. Sport is the same. Fantasy sports is the same. Or do you think that just because unlikely things happen, (unlikely meaning they do happen but just at a lower frequency than likely things) somehow the whole thing is just random.

in that sport, like everything else in the world, has rules, laws and probabilities.

Or do you really think sport is random? That it's totally incalculable, and betting prices are just wild numbers plucked out of thin air that bookmakers put on their site.

You don't know what you're talking about but it's ok, most people in this community seem to have no fundamental idea that probabilities, odds and statistics exist objectively in the sports betting world and live in blissful ignorance so you're not alone

Your argument is flawed as it seems to be based on bookies odds being a clear measure of statistical probability - they aren't.

Of course they are strongly tied but there is much more to running a book than simple probability.

As an example if you bet on England to win the World Cup in England you would get worse odds than if you did it in a bookies in another country - the probability England will win the World Cup is obviously the same in either location just an English bookie will be taking more bets on that outcome and thus manage their liability accordingly.

Even by your own flawed logic were true then you clearly contradict it by saying they are the best team in the league yet aren't favorites to win it - you can't have it both ways ........

Not that this means KDB was a bad captain choice who should instantly dumped.

In this I agree he wasn't although I think the fact Utd have 2 days more rest and importantly a day more than the Blades make Bruno a better one. He could of course miss a penalty and end up on 0 ........

It's your base premise I disagree with.

the vast majority of betting is now done online, with sites that offer services to people from dozens of countries including the UK. The prices are the same on England winning the World Cup on bet365 whether you're on the site in France, the UK, Russia or Japan.

Often in shop bookmakers in the Uk, will take a big cut on England, so England may be trading on the online exchanges at 10/1 to win the World Cup, but you'll only get 5/1 in William Hill.

But the online exchange price like a stock exchange is usually the most accurate indicator of probability there is

You could also objectively say that Liverpool are the best team in the league seeing as they won it by 20 points last season and are joint top this season. The bookies aren't always right and the odds they offer are influenced by how punters are betting.

there's no such thing as right. Bookies aren't a group of people. There are sports betting companies that offer odds (which they take from betting exchanges where people trade with each other).

You're right that on smaller markets, sometimes to limit their exposure bookies will move lines, however this isn't the case on a major market like the premier league outright market

"Bookies aren't a group of people. There are sports betting companies that offer odds (which they take from betting exchanges where people trade with each other)."

Actually whilst all bookies all generally usually use the same basic odds feed of vanilla odds it is exactly "a group of people" - (typically known as the sportsbook team) who then vary those odds from company to company which is why different bookies offer different odds on the same event ............

in some cases yes. Some bookies use asian pricing system so literally tie their prices to exchanges like betfair exchange or matchbook, but you're right most UK bookmakers, w.hill, b.victor etc, do have teams of traders offering individual prices, although even this is very algorithmically done and traders often only intervene to move a price if the odds on an exchange change or if they have an overlay of money on one side and can't lay it off on an exchange i believe

The face of bookmaking changed forever when the exchanges arrived on the scene. Many of the original racecourse bookmakers were effectively gamblers themselves and would stand large bets. The days of Freddie Williams facing up to McManus are long since gone.

This is certainly true along with companies like Open Bet offering white label type solutions meaning there are so many more online companies.

Certainly the days of a major bookie being able to pick a race and essentially manipulate the odds are well and truly gone.

It's also worth noting that in setting the odds bookies will assume everyone starts and not worry about concepts such as Pep roulette which makes their use flawed.

This said it's not really relevant to this specific example as I was pretty sure KDB would start.

              As I say I'm not arguing against the fact KDB was a good captain pick I think there was very little between him and Bruno. I'm just saying you can't use bookies odds to say;
"KDB was the correct captain for this gameweek objectively. Anybody who says or thinks otherwise is just wrong."

And as I say even if you could you couldn't then argue that City aren't favorites but they are the best team as this contradicts your own argument.

"there's no such thing as right."

Currently my thinking is to build to a team I'll probably bench boost in gw19 and free hit in gw18.

It won't be a 15 dgw side in gw19 though as I've failed following that strategy before going 15 dgw'ers and being outscored by sgw options - e.g. Spurs play the Blades gw19.

Just able to watch the City match recorded earlier...De Bruyne could have had 2 or 3 assists if his team mates could have finished a tad better. Keeper made some great saves...but really a matter of inches numerous times from a KDB monster haul. Beautiful crosses and passes on a plate...just no finishing today from City.

Science? That word is losing value every day. Probably game, yes, not science

City had 5 players were very high odds to score, two did not start.

The guy that did score had odds closest to the goalkeeper scoring.

City are a challenging bet because they lack a talisman player. They swarm the other team but you can’t say who will score.

KDB is on a terrible unlucky streak. He could have 90 points in the last 4 weeks. But he did not

Can't say I agree. You cannot say City are the best team in the League with their current league position. The fact they couldn't beat WBA, who have the worst defensive record in the league speaks volumes. They do create a lot of chances, but they are wasteful. Their chance conversion is terrible. I only own KDB from City. I'm not transferring him out yet, but currently I don't own Salah. I was planning on major team surgery and a -8 to bring him in for GW15, but now considering swapping him for KDB and

I have DCL, Son, Mahrez, KDB, Grealish, Lamptey, Brewster* & Mitchell* who have fixtures in BGW18. Is building on this with 5 more transfers to ride out BGW18 and FH for DGW19 the logical thing to do? Or do teams playing GW18 have poor fixtures from GW20 onwards? Any help much appreciated!

Just take note that Liverpool, Chelsea, United and Leicester have blank GW20. If you do the above, then you will be without their players in GW20.

"Do teams playing GW18 have poor fixtures from GW20 onwards?" This you have to figure out yourself. Many things can happen between now and then.

Fwiw since I no longer have FH, I will ride out bgw18 and use bb or tc in 19. Will WC in 20 if necessary, or keep it for later use for better advantage

Can one have a decent side on 18 and use the same team to BB or TC in 19? How many DGWers from your team in 19 play 18?

Maybe it won't look decent on paper but imo as long as you can field 6-7 players, all hope is not lost. I see many are already planning 3 City, 3 $purs n a few Villa n Wolves in the team for 18, but even that doesn't guarantee you can survive 18. Last night games were perfect example.

My Spurs n Villa players and even DCL who will play in 18 could also feature in 19. Probably gonna bench Mo and Bruno that week.

        Son 48, Kane 34.

    Am I crazy?

Don’t love BB on week 19 because it means using transfers (and money) to upgrade non playing keeper and last two bench spots. Means For weeks after week 19 I’d have a lot of money tied up on bench...feels short sighted

I’m leaning FH in 18, TC in 19 (salah? Bruno?) and buying assets I want long term with a DW in 19. Use BB later in season

              Meant Wilson to Joelinton obviously.

              Let the games play.
I might lose Wilson if he blanks again.

I need to burn a transfer.

    McCarthy
    Chillwell, James, Targett
    Son, Salah, Grealish, Bruno(c), KDB
    Bamford, Wilson

    Subs: Forster, Dallas, Brewster, Dunne
    0 itb, 2 FT.

    (1) I can do Grealish to Bowen (in prep for 19) but their fixture difficulties are opposite. Grealish might get an early DGW according to Ben.
    (2) McCarthy to Meslier (both have tough fixtures this week but in the coming weeks Leeds have easier fixtures) and I can get back McCarthy just before 19 by downgrading someone. to have both of them for BB.
    (3) Wilson to Che Adams (again opposite fixture difficulties)

    (4) Chillwell to Coufal but not good for this week.
    (5) any suggestion?
    (6) Just be helpless and hope the coming week is a good week.

What would be the best approach going into these blanks and doubles without the FH chip? Foolishly played it out of desperation, and still could use another 5 of them haha, but how best would you approach it all with no FH?

Thinking just to squeeze as many DGW’ers in into GW 19 and then sort everything out with the 2nd WC GW 20?

    Completely forego GW18? 🙁

Probably focus on teams that play in gw18 and have a decent sgw fixture gw19 - e.g. Spurs & City

Cool, so you mean just go into GW 19 not really having that many DGW’ers and then WC in GW 20? Sorry just a bit confused.

Well I wouldn't necessarily wc in 20 as you may well want that for the later dgw but yeah you can get a decent gw18 side - maybe accept fielding 9 or so with good fixtures gw19. A lot of the dgw are a bit meh - you'd fancy Spurs option v Sheff Utd would outscore many dgw options.

West Ham probably the main out stands out as a nice dgw with no game gw18 along with maybe Salah with 2 at home.

          This may help;

Working towards DGW 19 may mean you end up losing team value to the point you can't afford a decent team from GW20 onwards. Is this a factor to consider?

Yes- that’s why a free hit might be due.

I think 8 marquee players is enough firepower to still have an ok week

      7 is borderline

      6 is too few

    For next gw, bench one

    A lamptey
    B Bowen
    C Bamford

Home to Shu, really tempted to start lamptey

Bowen and Bamford are playing vs so-so defenses

      Why bench them?

Vardy to Kane seems reasonable - Kane has a crazy good record v Leicester

I'm moving Vardy to Kane. As mentioned, Kane's record against Leicester is good.
